Chapter 10: Meh, Cat's Out of Bag.
"-veral witnesses have reportedly witnessed a white van parked in front of three different Dust stores with two of them unfortunately erupted in explosion during Dust robbery. As of now, five citizens have died and fourteen injured with property damage being estimated at twenty million Liens as major portions of connected buildings have been destroyed. The police is continuing the investigation and has publicly asked citizens to report any suspicious White Fan-"
Roman's finger pressed 'Off' button as a ginger head man made 'tsk' noise, "What a bunch of amateurs. Silly mongrels. Only they would make that much mess, they're those silly terrorist brutes. Not professional and stylish thieves like us, right?"
Neo's agreement came in form of nodding and signed through her hands which Roman translated, "If only they hired us-Ha! You got that right! But-" Roman shook his head, seemingly pity, "you know they will not, right? They'll only hire their people, heh. So much for...what is it again?"
"Equal Opportunities Non-Restrictive By Race?" Neo hand-signed helpfully.
"Yeah. That." Roman nodded before pretending to examine Neo as if she has just sprouted newly found wisdom, "You sure you don't want to attend college for law degree?" Neo shot him a disgusted look with Roman holding his hands up, "Just jesting, just jesting. No need to bring out your umbrella. It's just that you, for whatever reason, seems to have good knowledge of laws and it got me thinking-Just hear me out, Neo. Anyway, it got me thinking...Why don't we try to steal-" Roman made agonizing face, "legally by using those silly legal loopholes? Wouldn't that be-Okay, no. I get it. Not funny. We'll stick with our style."
"Was thinking we could try scamming clients-Hmm...what do people sue for these days, anyway. No matter, I need to get brand new couch. This one is killing my back."
Roman stretched before getting up to grab himself a bottle of water and toss a strawberry milk bottle at Neo who caught it at ease. Unfortunately with all the Dust robberies and senseless violence going on, the price of alcohol and some consumable goods has gone up by almost 150 percent. Since Roman and Neo haven't score a decent robbery, they simply bought cheap grocery. And they didn't feel like robbing a grocery store to save money.
"We should just move out." Roman remarked after taking a sip, "To Mistral or Mantle. Or even Atlas. This place is getting too….hectic for me. Even the underworld here getting little too antsy. Stupid mongrels, why they're still stealing Dust? Even with their too many counts of screw-up, they should have enough Dust for a small army by now! Oh, I'm telling you Neo. We should-" Roman paused as a light bulb lit up in his head while Neo drinking her strawberry milk as she browsed on her Scroll.
"You know..." Roman started, drawing Neo's attention, "I find it curious that those mongrels are still stealing Dusts." He rolled his eyes when Neo gave him a bored look as if saying "Uh huh, and?".
"And I just happened to gain a...Oh, alright. I'll just say it. I have it on good source that there's a rather hefty shipment of Dusts scheduled to arrive soon. And since you've been suffering boredom lately..." Roman suppressed his shudder as he learned early in his life, bored Neo is generally bad for anyone's health. Seeing Neo has interested glint in her eyes, Roman proceed to explain what they'll be doing before ending with, "Glad to see your enthusiasm. Just make sure you pack your bag before we do this."
Vale City...Harbor...
Lie Ren, at first impression, is levelheaded individual dressed in simple outfit while utilizing dual SMGs armed with blades for fire support and melee combat. A said individual who has been friend with Nora Valkyrie since childhood in now-ruined Kuroyuri. After years and years of traveling and training together, Ren and Nora got accepted by Beacon Academy. As a result, Ren's life got more complicated due to becoming the leader of Team LNPS.
While Ren isn't against becoming the leader, he personally thought Pyrrha Nikos has high chance of being one with her combat skills and somewhat likable personality. Likable as in socially amiable compared to Weiss Schnee who made poor impression to him and Nora during the initiation test. Not to say Weiss didn't improve her attitude and she doesn't have any choice of not to, thanks to Nora's supposedly 'girl talk'. And that pancake-loving girl continuously refused to answer Ren's question, only to make a zipping motion with "It was a girl talk" followed by "Where's my pancakes?".
Anyway, being a male leader of three girls is complicated. More complicated than Ren's comfort, but he managed to cope with it since the whole team laid down several rules on first night in team dorm. Mostly dominated by Weiss who strangely thought Ren would be a closet pervert placed in charge of three beautiful girls, planning deviant activities. Ren had blankly stared at her at Weiss's words with Nora verbally defending his honor. This coming from a girl who just described her 'imagination'. Funny thing is that Weiss has a rotten luck when it comes to few accidents that would've give media a field trip and her father whose image not painted in positive light (by judging small talk with Weiss) and is more likely to be labelled as pervert than Ren. Not that he'll tell her that at any time as that would be inviting more trouble.
Blurted out by Janna in usual 'argument' (Weiss's word, because that's what civilized people do), the first instance was when Weiss groped Pyrrha's chest. Fortunately, only Team LNPS and RABY know, though it didn't stop Janna and Yang from teasing Weiss. For a girl supposedly claimed to be proper and 'above petty insults', Weiss seem to be willing to engage in trash talk-ahem-argument against Janna over chest which Ren will not bother to listen. Which is pretty difficult for the only guy among seven girls with Nora having tendency to figuratively and literally drag him around.
"I need new friend, preferably a guy or two like me." Ren privately mused while continuing his thoughts on Weiss's rotten luck.
Second instance took place in Combat course during first week of classes when Weiss and Nora were selected to spar against Ruby and Yang to practice teamwork in combat. Weiss unintentionally jabbed her rapier against Ruby's chest and unfortunately, Yang saw it and the match ended right there with a trip to infirmary. Yang received scolding from Professor Goodwitch while Weiss received free one night stay in infirmary.
Third instance was in cafeteria after Janna 'rescued' a rabbit ears girl, Velvet as Ren remembered. Long story short, someone spilled a pudding on the floor and Weiss slipped over before falling with her hand catching onto nearby seat and other hand caught on poor rabbit ears girl's chest. Just briefly before Weiss quickly realized it and let go before falling flat on the floor. Luckily, not many people saw it (so much for environmental awareness training) and Weiss quickly excused herself before walking out of cafeteria, followed by Pyrrha. Leaving Velvet bearing petrified look and Janna muttering something. Ren wasn't sure, but read her lips saying "Her luck is not on her side" or something similar. One would think as well-known as Weiss's family name, people would pay attention and catch her falling ungracefully.
Not important, at least in Ren's view. What's important is that right now, he and Pyrrha have just helped Weiss to get off a strange ginger head girl who came out of nowhere while pursuing a blond monkey faunus who has just stowed away on a ship from different Kingdom and escaped from two men by using banana peels. And the first thing came out of ginger head girl's mouth while helping her to stand up was "Salutation, I'm Penny! Is groping chest the local greeting here?"
Ren sighed and calmly answered before Weiss could, "No, it's not. It was an accident, you have our apology for crashing into you. We were chasing someone. Are you alright?"
A ginger hair girl blinked with innocent face before beaming, "I see! I see! Yes, I'm 100 percent combat ready! Thanks for asking! I'm Penny!" Her words struck Ren as strange. Unusual. Not necessarily a bad thing in Ren's mind. But Penny's eyes look...fake. As someone attempting to make eyeballs realistic as possible. That's kind of impression Ren got from looking at strange girl's eyes.
Penny held her hand out for handshake with her teeth whose appearance cleaner than top rated hospital.
Team LNPS members look at each other briefly and ignoring "You already said that" from Weiss, Nora was the first to grasp Penny's hand, shaking, "I'm Nora! Strong grip you have there!"
"So it is! Pleasure to meet you!" Penny shook Nora's hand for a while before letting go in response to grab Ren's hand, "Call me Ren."
"A pleasure! I detect your hand softer than Nora's!" Penny happily informed Ren whose mind said "What?" A stoic boy raised his eyebrow questionably at Penny's statement. As if sensing a need of rescue, Pyrrha stood next to Ren with her hand out, "Pyrrha." A champion from Mistral has usual polite smile on her face that would send many fans into frenzy.
Penny formed a realization on her face as soon as her eyes discreetly scanned Pyrrha's face before beaming again, "Oh! Such a pleasure! I look forward to our possible engagement in combat for the tournament!" A secretly android with soul shook Pyrrha's hand enthusiastically with both hands.
Pyrrha merely maintained her polite smile while wondering if Penny has suffered a terrible accident that took her hands away and replaced by artificial ones. Looking at her rather bubbly personality, it seems Penny has accepted her artificial hands and possibly made weapon of them. Although Pyrrha wasn't sure if her team LNPS will participate in the Vytal Tournament as Beacon Academy has yet to make announcement, it would be interesting to fight against Penny.
Weiss barely prevented herself from rolling her eyes and with skepticism in her voice, asking, "The tournament? You mean you're here for the Vytal Tournament?" She studied Penny from head to bottom and back up to head. Penny doesn't look as if she's capable of fighting.
Much to Pyrrha's relief, Penny let go of her hands to answer, "Why off course! I'm a fleshy girl-" A hiccup escaped before continuing, "100% combat ready for the tournament!"
"What academy are you from? Where's your team?" Weiss interrogate-correction-asked which Penny doesn't seem to mind. Or lack social knowledge that she is being interrogated.
"Atlas Academy!" Penny chipped, "My team won't be here until next week!"
"And why you're here this early?" Weiss pressed on.
"To explore Vale City, off course!" Penny answered happily, "To experience the world! Cultures! And such-" Another hiccup. Actually, Penny came to Vale City to carry out a mission given by her 'uncle' for testing. To see how well Penny performs and behaves in different location outside of Atlas Kingdom, though she was supposed to be with two men escorting her instead of wandering around by herself. But humans before her don't need to know that since they're of Vale, not Atlas.
"How funny, Weiss said similar thing when I asked her why we came to the dock early." Ren thought with amusement, "Except Penny made it sound exciting." Though it was just Weiss's 'subtle' way of scouting out any team coming early from different academies to get any advantage for Team LNPS to obtain. Just in case. Which is rather strange, now Ren thought about it. Strange that Beacon Academy has to announce anything about the Vytal Tournament. From what he overheard from older students, Beacon would normally announced a month before arrival of other academy students' arrival whenever the Vytal Tournament taking place in Vale.
"Hmmp," Weiss doesn't seem to be convinced, "And why you're here in this shady alley? Do you happen to know where did that blond vagrant went? Are you his accomplice?"
"Weiss," A pair of light blue eyes moved onto Ren's calm display of disapproval, "No need to question her like that." Addressing Penny, Ren goes, "Sorry, this is Weiss-Weiss? Where are you going?"
Weiss could be seen marching off, "To find that blond vagrant!" in her aggravated tone.
"...Why am I the leader of this team?" Ren wondered, "So much for 'welcoming' people from different Kingdom matter." Yeah right, though what happen to scouting out potential opponent teams? For strengths and weaknesses? Weiss seem to forgotten her scouting idea after seeing a blond monkey faunus defeated two men with banana peels. Wait a minute, isn't this supposed to be done by police or custom officers? Speaking of which, where are they, anyway? Did those two detectives just decided to go home or something? But again, they didn't look...well-suited for catching a faunus who managed to jump high enough to reach top of buildings when Penny walked out of nowhere and Weiss ran straight into her. Hmm, this make...21st instance of Weiss's rotten luck. Weiss might well buy herself some lucks.
Ten Minutes Later…Random Street...
"Just like that, huh?" Janna spoke.
"Correct!" Penny cheerfully nodded, "After Weiss took off, her team said good bye to catch up with her in pursuit of blond hair faunus! And approximately ten minutes later in local time, you four showed up and here we are!"
"Yeah..." Ruby glanced at Blake's tired but passive expression, "That's cool. Umm, seeing you're new here and want to explore Vale City...Do you want to hang out with us?"
Not paying attention to Yang's look at Ruby, Penny gasped as if she has just made discovery of century and instantly have Ruby's hands in hers, "Hang out with you four locals? It'll be a sensational!"
Feeling slightly weird by over-excited girl, Ruby smiled, "Cool! That's alright with you, team?"
"Eh, sure." Janna shrugged, "The more the merrier I guess."
"I'm fine with that." Blake's short answer.
"...Uh yeah, why not." Yang answered before forming a grin, "Might well show you the shopping center and the good stuffs there."
"Sensational! I can't wait! What will we be doing at the shopping center?"
"Err...to shop around? Window browsing?" Yang studied Penny for short while before feeling pity as she came up with conclusion. Poor girl, it doesn't sound like she has ever shop-
Penny gasped out of excitement, "Shopping! Window browsing! This is splendid! New experience-"
"Oi, not to burst your bubble but can we get moving now? The store Weap of Harvest selling the mod I want is about to open!" Janna interrupted, "And stick with us, you'll experience the joy of shopping! Well, more as window browsing. Since we're not rich and all." The last part was spoken in form of muttering.
"And don't forget, we're heading to the book store afterward." Blake input calmly, "Heard new books came in." And one of them is supposedly hot to read.
"And the weapons! Can't wait to see what-" Ruby got interrupted by Yang, "Can't you do that once we get to the Weap of Harvest-"
"Not that store, they're not getting new weapons until next month! I'm talking about Metal Rack store! They have more selection than Weap of Harvest right now! Read it online article that they have some sort of mini-gun capable of shooting mini-buzz saws and I want to check that one out!"
Yang groaned, "Does that really exist-Oh whatever, fine but we're still going to Hot Ride shop, okay? I need to buy new cleaning stuff for my baby." At this, Blake made soft 'pfft' sound that Yang caught, "What?"
"Nothing." said Blake before forming a faint smile, "It's just that you called your...motorcycle a 'baby'."
"I'll have you know that it's normal for gals to call their motorcycle-"
"Yeah, yeah, let's go girls!" Janna butted in before urging her team and Penny to walk, "I want to be first in line there!" Absently, a blond girl added, "I still can't believed you bought your bike with you to Beacon Academy!"
"Heh yeah, me too." Yang nodded before saying in deadpanned tone, "The answer's still no."
"Shoot...Was going to ask you that."
"Nope! Not on my baby! Unless you want to be passenger, but riding? Get your own, Jan!"
Blake rolled her eyes as she followed Yang and Janna bickering over Bumblebee, a sport motorcycle own by Yang while Ruby and Penny walked together, chatting.
From there, Team RABY and Penny proceed to spend time together, shopping and browsing the windows as they walked around in shopping center. It was truly new experience for Penny whom Team RABY assumed to be extremely sheltered girl who just step out into the new world, based on Penny's rather vague explanation that for some unknown reason, filled with hiccups. Weird to hear so many hiccups.
Despite her hiccups, Penny is rather "cool, strong gal" as Janna said after she and her team witnessed Penny's unintentional manhandling of a purse thief who ended up flying in air before landing in a trash can with his legs twitching. Small crowd gave Penny a short applause while other civilians have wary look. Keeping their distance from Penny and Team RABY. Possibly wondering which one of five girls will snap and go on rampage. Becoming another rogue Hunter, another number added to statistic. A solemn reminder to Team RABY that the Huntsmen and Huntresses don't have positive public image.
Despite seemly negative reaction from civilians and police who later came to comprehend a purse snatcher, it was a fun day for Team RABY. Except out of seemly random, Blake who got shocked by Penny's innocent question about her bow and cat ears, "Wouldn't your bow cause an irritation against your feline ears? Not much freedom under your bow." What? How's in Remnant did Penny see through her disguise? Ruby had to remind Blake of team reaction to her reveal of faunus heritage back in team dorm yesterday.
Blake paused to go through her memory of yesterday before shaking her head. Her teammates didn't exactly react as she thought, but not in negative manner as she privately feared. Rather than being shocked or stunned, three girls have started bickering over who was the first to notice.
Flashback…Team RABY dorm...Yesterday...
"Ah ha! I knew it!" Ruby cried triumphantly, "It make sense! I mean, I literally pointed it out while we were sapping syrup out of trees!" She jumped up and down in...celebration with Blake bearing dumbfounded look on her face and a bow in her hand.
"What are you talking about?" Janna snorted, "You didn't exactly point it out, you just simply listed that one as one of possibilities along with cookie eating spaghettis outworldly whatever creature in your leader-ish speech! I mean, c'mon! If anything, I was the first to notice! I mentioned how she posed herself like a cat!"
"What?" Blake's mind shouted, slightly offended by Janna's words. She doesn't posed like a cat, right?
"Yeah right! I-" Yang emphasized word 'I', "was the first to notice to before you. Shoot, I mentioned how she arched her back in her sleep like a cat."
"Excuse m-?" Blake tried to say something, but Ruby protested, "No, you didn't! That was me who mentioned that! You actually said something about how she purr-"
"Oh yeah! She purred, "Janna agreed, "Pretty adorable."
"What are y-" Blake got interrupted. Poor Blake and why her cheeks felt little warm when Ruby and Yang voiced their concurrence. Surely she didn't purr in her sleep, right? And she definitely doesn't arch her back that much.
"Yeah, and how she devoured fish. Speaking of which, stop stealing my fish nuggets. Yang said I need to eat more! Nutrition and stuffs!" said Ruby who pouted at Blake, "Anyway, I was the firs-"
"Uh no, that was me. Remember how I compared Blake to cat ninja character from comic book? With how her bow twitched? How she landed after jumping off the tree?" Janna injected.
"You two girls need to stay up-to-date! That Catkra is done years ago! Personally, she's more as Feline Woman from the movie! Cause of Blake's weapon and fashion!" From there, the room got erupted in argument between member R, A, and Y with each of them pointing out the number of signs of Blake being cat faunus and for probably dumb reason, comparing her to number of fictional characters with feline characteristics. And wow, Blake never knew there's THAT many females with cat features in Dust-saken TV shows and movies. But again, not like she has time to watch anything when she was part of White Fang.
"...Good Dusts...Did I really dis-I thought I did-I should've thought more than just wearing a bow-" Blake attempted to think but couldn't with her teammates bickering in manner of high speed tennis ball bouncing between three girls. Oh for love of-Why are they still going over fictional cat characters five minutes later?
"GIRLS!" Blake snapped loudly, "I'm trying to think! Just! SHUT UP for two seconds!" She rubbed her temple with both hands, wondering maybe she should've waited a little longer before revealing or even bother to reveal at all. Exactly two seconds later, three girls muttered an apology which Blake shook her head tiredly, "Oh forget it, can't think! Did I really show that many obvious signs?"
Ruby, Yang, and Janna all look at each other before giving one word answer at the same time while grinning.
"Yup!"
"..." Blake stared at her teammates before sighing tiredly, "...You know what? You three are weird, but...thank you. For...you know...You know...I-" A now revealed cat faunus halted when Yang walked to her before gently set her hands on Blake's shoulders with serious expression, "Blake, you're still our teammate. That's all it mattered to me. To Rubes and Jan." Looking behind Yang, Blake could see Ruby and Janna nodding in agreement as Yang continued, "Sure, you don't talk much and not exactly uhh...shoot, not good at this, but engaging. Yeah, engaging but you're still our teammate. One of us. Team RABY."
Yang took a deep breath before going on, "Let's face it, Blake. We're pretty much beyond this point since we fought through horde of dummies, getting wrecked by those annoying tin cans armed with cheap plastic toys, crawled through mud, dirt, and filths with crazy man looming over us and don't argue, Jan. You know this is true, I mean he's your cousin." Janna was going to say something before closed her mouth, sporting sheepish look while mumbling, "I only know him for two years, told you that."
Yang went on, "We fought together in the initiation test against big bird. We just fought together to get out of...Grimm situation-" At this, Ruby facepalmed which got ignored by Yang, "Killing Grimms left and right to rescue you. And you saw me punching heck out of Cardin's face and speaking of which, remind me to punch him on Monday-"
"Yang-" Blake began but felt Yang's firm grip on her shoulders.
"Anyway, you get the gist of what I'm trying to say. And in case you don't, my point is-" Yang pulled Blake toward Ruby and Janna before holding her hand out with Yang making head gesture at two girls. Sporting an understanding, Ruby and Janna placed their hand over Blake's and Yang's with blond brawler finishing her words, "WE'RE Team RABY. Human, faunus, well...We got your back and we know you got ours. And I know you didn't forget what Professor Port said back on our first day of Grimm Studies."
"...You..." Blake couldn't think of anything to say. Granted, Yang's words didn't flow fluently but Blake understood. Yang leaned closer to Blake to whisper loud enough for the girls to hear, "Just so you know, Rubes's right. She need to eat more fish."
Just like that, the serious atmosphere disappeared.
"YAANNG!"
"I'm serious! It's not healthy to keep eating all those cookies everyday for breakfast, lunch, and dinner!"
"One must wonder whether you have bottomless pit you called stomach or not." Janna added only to smirk upon hearing "JANNA!" from Ruby. Blake merely shook her head before grabbing her team's attention, "You girls-Oh forget it, no point thinking about it. Just...do me a favor."
Seeing her teammates looking at her, Blake spoke seriously with tired but serious look, "Just don't tell anybody, only you three know. That's it. Nobody else." Actually, it's more than three but Beacon faculties and a drunken man don't count.
Seeing three girls nodding, Blake sighed in relief while privately thinking it's fortunate that neighboring teams including Team LNPS have yet to return to their dorm since they were still in cafeteria when Team RABY finished theirs and left.
Flashback ended…
"Right..." Blake deadpanned, "It was obvious. Off course, silly me." So much for keeping secret within Team RABY and definitely so much for 'Nobody else' part. Cat faunus mentally groaned, it hasn't been one day! Maybe she should've wear something else instead of bow to hide her cat ears. Seeing confused look on Penny, Blake addressed her, "Penny, hate to ask you this but could you do me a favor?"
"Yes…?" Penny tilted her head.
"Please don't tell anyone of my cat ears." requested Blake in serious tone, "I'm not ready to...show myself to the world." Oh, that sound simple to Penny. Not a problem for a secretly android, it's not as if she being asked to keep criminal activity a secret or anything, Penny figured naively. Beside, Atlas military is more concerned about White Fang terrorists than some faunus in Vale City escaping racism by disguising as human plus Penny has been observing Blake and other members of Team RABY and didn't detect anything suspicious about them. Pretty easy! As long as no one ask Penny if Blake is human or faunus and not pick up her hiccup glitch.
"Sure thing!" Penny beamed, "I will endeavor not to say of this to anybody!"
Blake sighed, "Thank you...friend." Somehow Penny's smile shine brighter. How's that possible, Blake has no idea.
"It's a pleasure! I must leave, have to meet someone-" Penny hiccupped, "It is getting la-" She froze.
"Penny?" Ruby called out, "You okay there?"
Suddenly, Penny got close to Blake who yelped out of surprise, "I just realized something!"
"What is it?" Blake warily asked.
"You just called me friend!" Penny answered excitedly.
"Off course, she did!" Ruby cheerfully spoke, "We spent almost whole afternoon together! We're all friends now!" This time, it's her turn to yelp when Penny got uncomfortably close to her, "Really?"
Behind Penny, Ruby could see her teammates making gestures and with confidence, she said, "Absolutely!"
"SENSATIONAL!" Penny cheered, "This is wonderful!" She froze again before blurting out, "Oh! I'm late! Good bye, friends!" before taking off running in random direction. Leaving Team RABY dumbfounded with Ruby slowly waving good-bye.
"Yeah, so that happens." Yang was first to break the silence thirty seconds later.
"Yup!" Ruby nodded, smiling.
"...Can we get back to the campus?" Blake sighed, wanting to start reading a new book she bought. It's about a mysterious doctor roaming around to cure people of demonic plague and it should be good read. Hopefully.
Author: Edit-Fixing minor spellings and adding missing words.
To summarize this, Weiss, like in canon, still dragged her team to dock to 'welcome' ship passengers to Vale City but with Ren, Pyrrha, and Nora.
Yup, Team RABY went on shopping trip (more as browsing) with Penny. Note that Blake has only revealed her faunus heritage and nothing about her being former White Fang member. In contrast to canon where Blake lost control of her emotions in argument against Weiss over faunus vs Schnee family and blurted out "Well maybe we were just tired of being pushed around!", indicating her White Fang involvement before running away, Blake in this story made decision to reveal her cat ears. She's taking small step at a time.
As you probably noticed, this chapter is "Black and White" episode except it's on Saturday, not Friday as in canon. Simple answer: Jaune has his own course schedule while Glynda has her own. "Field trip on Thursday!" (making up, RWBY wiki no help with what day Glynda scheduled the field trip or I'm blind) Glynda said while Jaune said, "No, field trip on Friday."
But wait a minute, Sun supposed to arrive yesterday (Friday)! Simple answer- his ship was supposed to sail but unable to until next day, Saturday. You'll learn why in next chapter. Wait, what about Penny? She arrived yesterday via different method of transportation. But why she's wandering in alley? Because she feel like it.
I'm likely to keep screwing up RWBY timeline, but will do my best to follow it. Oh, and I'm likely skip some episodes in this story. Blame Crusader and Demons.
