Author's Note: it's been 84 years...no but seriously. I don't even know if people are still reading this story due to my lack of consistency and oh boy I don't blame you. To be honest, I got kind of lost as to where to go after the last chapter, as I had some sort of plan but honestly, this story is sort of on the fly. Then, Yashahime came out and all of my nostalgic feelings for all of my fave shows came back, and couldn't wait to write another chapter! I hope this kind of clears up what Kaija's item is and what it does. I have had the idea for this item since I was eleven years old, and only really figured out its true use until recently. Please let me know if you liked this chapter and leave a review! I want to continue this story.
The roar echoed throughout the throne room, all six of the Pharaoh's council looking upon the monstrous change that Kaija seemed to suffer through. The roar didn't sound as though it was one of victory, but of pain, as her body morphed and changed into something seemingly evil. The roar ended with heavy pant, looking down to her hands and seeing the changes that had been contained and only released a handful of times. Clenching her fists, her knuckles cracked as a wicked grin crawled across her face - a fang hanging over her lower lip as she did so. The outline of the millennium heart in her chest seemed to blacken, as if to shatter any doubt that it was the cause.
No! Please! Stop! Stop changing!
Shut up, wench! I'm protecting us!
No you aren't! You're going to hurt them!
The conflict began to rage within the being's mind, the soul of Kaija fighting with the monster that now had come to be and was projecting itself in reality.
Why shouldn't I? He left us to suffer then found himself in the arms of that insufferable woman. You know it to be true. Our beloved Pharaoh didn't care enough to look for us. The only reason he even shows a speck of affection is out of pity!
Kaija remained silent, doubt filling her mind and darkening her soul, feeding into the being that now stood before the court, guards and Priests at the ready.
Maybe she's right...
And what of the rest? They disrespected you, called you less than deserving. Isis only took you in because you had a millennium item. She has no use for you, otherwise. You don't belong here.
"Kaija! Stop this!" The familiar voice of Isis was muffled by the need to dominate - to burn and destroy. The rage she felt in her heart, the betrayal and jealousy, it manifested in her new seemingly demonic being, "Harness your power! You can control it! You must!"
No words had been spoken from Kaija, eyes still blood red as she scanned her surroundings. The stance she held was one of offensive, knees bent and claws lifted at the ready - she was a terrifying sight indeed.
Atem looked upon her with wide eyes and a terrified expression. The tightening in his chest almost suffocated him, seeing the woman he loved in such a vile form. This wasn't the woman he knew - not right now.
"I knew it! I knew you were a threat the moment that rejected millennium item found you as a host!" Aknadin finally spoke, pointing to Kaija with such accusation and disdain.
"Shut up, old man."
The entire room seemed to gasp, hearing Kaija finally speak. But, it was't her. The voice was lower and held much, much more grit, as if every word was a growl, "You know nothing. She knows nothing, either." There was her own sense of disdain that coated her words, "She would be dead without me," gaze then flickered towards the pharaoh, narrowing her gaze towards him as if she intended to strike.
You're holding us back. That pharaoh is keeping us from finding the highest potential of our power. All because you love him. Even though he wants nothing to do with you!
Don't hurt him. Please.
"Guards! Seize her!" Set called out, but was interrupted.
"No! You will not harm her!" Atem's voice rang true, causing the guards to immediately cease. A self-satisfied huff came from the demonic presence, followed by a soft chuckle.
"Mortals. So weak to their emotions."
"Who are you? And where is Kaija!?" Atem continued, remaining where he stood, even though it took everything in his power to not go to her.
"Who? Can't you see, Pharaoh. I am your beloved Kaija - at least, part of her, anyway," the being straightened some, head canted slightly, "I am the darkest part of her, and as you can see, she can be very, very dark. I lay dormant for quite some time, as there wasn't much darkness in her heart when you two would sneak off on your little escapades - when she was in love," the last two words were spoken mockingly, eyes almost rolling she spoke.
There was a snarl on the Pharaoh's face, infuriated at the fact that this was to be used against him.
"But when Bakura took her, it gave me ample time to collect the darkness within her. She didn't give up without a fight, though - feisty thing she is. But after two years of suffering - of being abused, tormented and violated-" the last word was a very real growl, lips curled back in remembrance, "She finally decided to give up."
"You...slaughtered them," Isis breathed, thinking back to when they had found her - how her arms were coated in blood. How she screamed that it wasn't hers.
A low chuckle left Kaija then, gaze catching Isis in confirmation, "Every last one. Or so I thought," making an obvious reference to the fact that Bakura still lived, along with a handful of his men, "This body is stronger than I gave credit, as well as the girl's mind. It was her who, even with my power put forth, lead us back to the palace steps. Back to her beloved pharaoh."
Mahad's gaze narrowed, "Then why did you not simply attack us when she awoke?"
"Because, dear priest, she was united with her pharaoh, mostly, anyway. The darkness she had held in her heart was diminished by relief and happiness. But, when we realized that her heart no longer belonged to the Pharaoh, how he had moved on and found another, that's where I lay and waited. Waited for the jealousy, anger and spite to come forth, enough that I could make my appearance," a frustrated huff left her then, gaze falling to the pharaoh once again, "But then you ended up choosing her once more and offering for her to become your queen. It was enough to have the need for revenge to be staved off, but it was still there. That doubt - that sense of betrayal, it never left."
Atem's heart stopped beating for a moment, eyes widening once again as he looked to Kaija with an immense amount of pain. Of guilt and remorse. Kaija drew in a long, deep breath through her nose, as if smelling the air. Releasing her breath with a hiss, she smirked, "I can smell it on you. The guilt you harbour in your heart for leaving her, for finding another. It's a deep wound - delicious," that smirk broadened as she licked one of her fangs, "What I would do to have a taste of your darkness, dear Pharaoh."
"Enough, you vile beast!" Aknadin hissed, lip curling back in a snarl of his own. Attention turned to Atem then, "You are a fool! You are letting this monster stay within our presence!"
Atem glared towards Aknadin, a furious look in his gaze as his fists clenched, "That is not Kaija, but that is her body. She must be in there."
"Pharaoh, we must do something," Isis stated, keeping her attention on the demon ahead of them, making sure that she made no sudden movements.
"There is nothing you can do! Attack me and you'll be attacking your precious Kaija, so powerless and meek within her own mind."
Shut up! Stop this! The fatigue she felt, the reason she remained on her knees, was fought against as she climbed to her feet.
You're a fool, Kaija. The pharaoh doesn't love you. The darkness in his heart is nothing but guilt and pity upon you. Nothing more!
I don't care! The weakened woman began to take a few steps towards her counterpart.
You will not harm him!
The beast looked stunned, looking at Kaija with wide eyes before is morphed into a scowl.
His darkness is intoxicating - it will be mine.
"Now, enough of this stalling. My need is growing and thus my thirst for power. I can see darkness within each and every one of your hearts, and it will all be mine!" With super human skills, she jumped into the air, at least 20 feet, before flexing her talons, "And pharaoh, you will be my first victim!"
"Pharaoh!" The entire council screamed before Mahad put up his hand, shooting a blast of power at Kaija, which she promptly and effortlessly dodged.
It seemed they didn't know what to expect, as Kaija's movements seemed to throw the entire council off. Each tried their millennium item, but all seemed powerless, "She has her own item! Ours are powerless against it!"
Atem grabbed a sword from one of the guards, knowing that he was her intended target, "Kaija! Stop!" The shout did nothing, as Kaija continued her path towards the Pharaoh. When she was close enough, she swiped at him, only to deflected by the sword. Her attempts continued, which the Pharaoh seemingly agile enough to dodge and counter most of her attacks.
That is, until he made one wrong steps, causing Kaija to have the upper hand and pin him to the ground.
A clawed hand gripped his throat, her index finger pointing a talon to her neck. She had him straddled, her strength enough that he could barely move. Both of his hands gripped her wrist, gasping her air he tried to please, "K-Kaija. Kaija, p-please. F-Forg-ive me," the words were a struggle to say.
The rest of the council charged her, only for the talon to dig into Atem's flesh, "Ah ah ah! Now, now. Come any closer, and I'll kill your Pharaoh right here."
Feeble steps were taken towards her opposition, only to be brought her knees by a simple gaze from her own dark spirit.
Do not be a fool, Kaija. He deserves his. He deserves to perish. Think of everything he put your through. The secrecy, the betrayal and neglect. He doesn't care about you!
You lie! The words left her forcefully, peering up at her own darkness, He did what he could! How could I possibly expect him to wait two years for me? Of him thinking I was dead? He found someone to heal him and for that I am thankful because...
She paused as she climbed to her feet, Because all I ever want is to see Atem happy!
A light surrounded her soul, emanating realization as she took a few more steps towards her darker self, Fine. If you won't see the truth, I will just need to end this.
Peering down at the Pharaoh, she released his neck, only to bring her arm up over her head. Claws were spread and extended, prepared to strike, "I will take great pleasure in pulling your throat from your neck and drinking that delicious darkness you hold!" The shout was followed by a roar, accompanied by screams and gasps from the court, prepared to see the gruesome end to their Pharaoh.
No! Kaija screamed as she reached out and gripped the dark spirit's shoulder, pushing her to the ground and enveloping her with light.
No, you fool! You fool! You will pay for this!
Before the strike could complete, it stopped mid air. The grimace and preparation for his demise that Atem held on his face relaxed slightly, opening one eye to see the transformation. The once blood red gaze that sent a chill down his spine, turned the misty pools that he remembered. Sweat clung to her forehead as she seemed to tremble, her now claw-less hand only a mere inch from his neck. Her breath was heavy and shaky, her body and mind exhausted from taking over her own body.
"Kaija?" Atem finally spoke, only to have Kaija's normal voice return.
"I'm sorry. I'm so-" her body gave out then, eyes rolling to the back of her head as she fell to the side, landing on her shoulder as she passed out.
"Kaija!" Atem immediately moved, getting to his feet and hovering over her. Cupping her cheek, he examined her face, almost peaceful as she remained unconscious.
"Pharaoh! Get away from her!" Mahada shouted, Set coming up behind Atem to grab his arm. Snapping it away, the pharaoh glared up at his friend.
"Take her to he medical wing," Atem commanded, only to be cut off by Aknadin.
"The medical wing!? This wench should be tossed in the dungeon!"
Isis glared towards the old man, "I sense no evil in her now. I would feel it, a surge of great power that coursed through her before she changed back - she controlled it by the end."
"Who knows when it could come back?!" Aknadin retorted, only to be interrupted by Atem.
"She is still your queen - "
"She is not my queen! She has not yet laid claim to that title! She is nothing but-"
"a bearer of a millennium item! Would you be so quick to turn on your friends and colleagues, should they succumb to their power?" Atem stared down the old snake, seeing his jaw clench before he finally conceded.
Turning his attention back to Kaija, Atem lifted her up with one arm behind her knees and the other holding her torso against his chest. Peering down at her, his brows furrowed, an ache in his heart building at the knowledge that she had been suffering internally and so greatly, at that, "No, Kaija, it is me who is sorry..." he murmured, pressing a kiss to her forehead before he began to take her to the medical wing.
