Chapter 9: Advancements
(A week later, 3rd person pov)
"Hmmmm.." Yuuto grunted as he sat on his bed in his uniform all but his blazer and meticulously ran a benzene coated, folded piece of cloth down the blade of one of his katana's making sure to go from hilt all the way down to the tip before starting back again from the bottom. Once the cleaning had finished he lifted the blade up to the light to admire his work as the sword sparkled. "Perfect." He said with a smirk before returning the weapon to it's hilt and placing it back on his wooden display rack.
As he was returning to his bed he noticed his TV had been left on and it was showing clips from the U. A. sports festival. The particular clip in question had shown Yuuto's entire body was encased in ice before he could throw Todoroki out of the ring. The sound was off so Yuuto couldn't hear any of the fight commentary and if anything he'd prefer not to.
'The Human Popsicle, I wonder if that hero name is already taken.' Yuuto thought as he hastily clicked off the television. "HAACCHOO!" The dark haired boy let out a loud sneeze before whipping his nose with his hand. 'Just thinking about it gives me chills, that jerk. I get that it was a competition and everything but he didn't have to freeze me solid. I couldn't even watch the final match because I was busy getting thawed out in the nurse's office and stinking Todoroki didn't even win the thing so I wasn't able to get third place. The whole thing just pisses me off but it was my fault it happened. I shoulda been more patient.' "Well, live and learn." The boy said aloud with a dismissive shrug.
BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! An alarm on Yuuto's smartphone began to go off and he pulled it out to silence it. The digital clock on his screen read "8:29" and yuuto's eyes seemed to widen slightly. "Crap, I might actually be late." Yuuto quickly slipped his U.A. jacket over his shoulders and grabbed hold of his backpack and in the very next moment he was no longer in his apartment.
The boy reappeared inside the front gates at U.A. and quickly pulled his smartphone back out and the time still read "8:29" which caused a satisfied smile to form on the boy's face. "Guess I shouldn't've been too worried."
"You guess wrong!" The commanding voice of fellow classmate Tenya Iida blared from behind him, getting Yuuto to flench. Soon the class representative was right up in Yuuto's face and was ready to deliver an earful along with his classic air chops. "Being on time to class by only ONE minute is nothing for a class 1-A student to be proud of and on top of that you're not supposed to use your quirk outside of class even if you teleported straight from your bedroom to the school, that's still against the rules. On top of that you're only on time by definition, you're not in your seat yet so… huh?" In the middle of Iida's rant Yuuto decided to warp away leaving the class rep yelling at nothing. "Oh no… Don't tell me I'll be the last one seated again!"
(Later)
"Time to pick your hero names…" Mr Aizawa said in his traditional deadpanned voice.
"AWESOME!" A positive response erupted from the class prompting a glare from their homeroom teacher that quickly quieted things down.
"This is related to the pro hero draft picks I've mentioned before." Aizawa continued with his lecture. "Normally first years don't worry about the draft but this class is different, in fact by extending offers to students of your age is essentially an investment in your potential. These offers can be rescinded at any time, keep that in mind."
Toru Hagakure raised her invisible hand with a question. "So does that mean we'll have to continue to prove ourselves even after being scouted?"
"Exactly." Aizawa answered with a short nod that prompted the bubble headed Mineta to whisper something unsavory under his voice. "Now here are the numbers of offers each of you had." Aizawa pressed a small remote button and the chalkboard immediately began to read off names from highest to lowest and this particularly captured Yuuto's attention.
'588… That puts me in third.' Yuuto's eyes then scrolled up to the names listed ahead of him and then he saw the numbers listed next to their names. 'Woah! I'm not even close… I bet it's because of who my dad is.' Yuuto thought but then his eyes drifted to the two students who were ahead of him Katsuki Bakugou then Shoto Todoroki. 'No that's not it, it's because their quirks are incredible. Todoroki beat me with a single attack and Bakugou was even stronger than him. They beat me cause right now they're stronger than I am but that won't last long. By the next sports festival I'll be number one!'
"Even those who got no offers will be interning with a pro so don't worry." Aizawa continued. "You all got experience fighting real villains but working up close with actual pros will be helpful for your growth and for these internships you'll need hero names." Another wave of cheers erupted from class but Aizawa continued anyway. "These names are likely temporary but you need to take this seriously."
"Or else you may regret it for life." Ms Kayama the X-Rated hero midnight suddenly entered the 1-A homeroom getting the attention of a number of male students.
"Ms Midnight will have final say in your names. The name you give yourself is important." Aizawa continued just barely giving reference to Midnight's existence. "A name represents the type of hero you want to be, people should be able to decipher the type of hero you are on your name alone now get to work."
People began to go up in front of the class to present their hero identities, the whole while Yuuto stared down at his blank white board. 'C'mon if this is gonna be my name forever then it's gotta be something catchy but also intimidating. Something that could strike fear into the heart of any villain, even my old man…'
"Okay, so who's next?" Midnight asked, prompting a slow hand raise from Yuuto. "Alright, then step up."
Yuuto slowly marched up to the front of the class and confidently turned over his white board. "I'm the Vanishing Hero, call me Warp." Yuuto said proudly. 'It's a reference not only to my vanishing quirk but to how my DNA was warped in order to give me my quirk.'
"It's fine, that'll do." Midnight said dismissively, getting Yuuto to turn to her stunned.
'No way, I thought it was cool… I spent all that time and this was the best name I could come up with….' Yuuto hunched over in sorrow as he trudged his way back to his desk.
(Later)
"So these are the agencies who sent me requests huh." Yuuto began to work through thirty or so pieces of paper each with ten to twenty different agency names and addresses written on them. 'Those of us who received offers were given time to think our decisions over most of them went out to think by themselves but I sat around in the classroom with those who weren't given any offers.' Yuuto picked up the first page and his eyes widened as he read off some of the names. "Woah there are some big time offers in here."
"Don't rub it in!" The ever spunky Mina Ashido roared into Yuuto's ear.
"Uh, sorry…" Yuuto quickly pulled his sheet in close, not trying to show off to those who have no offers. He wouldn't even have the chance to read it when he felt the Hero enthusiast Izuku Midoriya peering over his shoulder. "Ummm, would you like to read it?" Yuuto awkwardly handed his sheet over to his green haired classmate.
"Yes please!" Izuku said politely before quickly snatching the sheet away before intensely studding it. "You weren't kidding!" Deku exclaimed enthusiastically. "Gang Orca, Kamui Woods! Mount Lady is on here too!"
"WHAT! NO WAY!" Mineta erupted in a jealous roar. "Let me see that!"
"No I wanna see!" Ochaco Uraraka called out.
"But I'm not done with it yet.." Deku muttered and soon there was a three way battle for the page.
"Well, I won't be seeing that page anytime soon." Yuuto said with a huff before pulling another page off his stack. "Let's see what page has too in store." Yuuto began reading the sheet but his eyes didn't need to go below the first name. "Woah, no way. I think I know where I'm going."
(Next day, Hosu City Tokyo)
Yuuto stood in front of a massive shinden style house wearing his blue and white hero costume with his twin Katanas strapped to his back. He pulled his phone out and checked his map. "Well this is the place." KNOCK! KNOCK! "Hello! Anyone in there!" Yuuto called out but there was no answer. "I guess I'll let myself in."
Yuuto pulled the sliding door open and quickly stepped inside, the building was totally dark. "I guess no one's home. Is today a holiday or something?" Yuuto turned to leave but was interrupted by a sudden BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! Yuuto's high tech motion sensor went off and an arrow formed on his monitor pointing left. Yuuto quickly turned that way to see a small object hurtling towards him, the lights from his costume reflecting off of whatever it was. CLANG!
In one swift movement Yuuto unsheathed one of his katanas and sliced whatever it was out of the air. Yuuto bent down to examine the strange projectile and discovered something familiar to him. "A shuriken…" He picked up the throwing star and quickly discovered that the edges were not sharp. 'A nonlethal attack, this must be some kind of test.'
"You're very lucky that your technology kicked in to warn you." An unknown voice called out from the shadows. "If that attack had hit you I would've sent you back to U.A. because frankly I'm unimpressed so far. You wield those swords as if you've had some for of training but what kind of ninja knocks on the front door?!"
BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! Yuuto's helmet went off again this time pointing him in the opposite direction CLANG! He once again knocked the flying blade out of the sky with a swing of his katana. 'Damnit, He got around me before I could even see him. It's too dark in here I can't even use my quirk.' Yuuto pushed a button and his helmet's visor changed from yellow to green. "Night vision!" He declared.
Yuuto quickly looked towards the direction of the last shuriken and saw a silhouette of a man. "Gotcha!" He warped over to the silhouette but by the time he could bring down his sword whoever was there had disappeared. "Huh?"
The silhouette reappeared deeper in the mansion. "Being able to move instantaneously is useless in a fight if you telegraph your attacks like that."
"Grrr!" Yuuto growled before unsheathing his other sword and teleporting towards the silhouette once again and once he got there he performed a crossing slice on his target who seemed to bend itself around his attack. "Huh?"
The silhouette then throughout his arms and thin rope-like tendrils wrapped themselves around Yuuto's wrists and tightened to the point where he was forced to drop his weapons. "That didn't work the last time, why would you try it again? I understand your quirk is fairly new to you but with your power and that night vision helmet the only way I should be able to land an attack is if you do exactly what I anticipate you to. This was your biggest issue in the sports festival as well you can move anywhere on the battlefield and never be out of range for an attack. In your fight against Endeavor's son you moved only to set yourself up to an attack but during the whole match your opponents eyes were trained on you and you didn't use it to your advantage."
Yuuto quickly warped himself out of the bindings as the silhouette kicked away his blades before disappearing once more. Yuuto followed after his foe but lost him through the maze of hallways until suddenly a maze of smoke began to fill the corridor. "Smoke bombs?" BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! Yuuto leapt up into the air to avoid another incoming shuriken.
"Crap!" Yuuto muttered, immediately taking off into a sprint in an attempt to escape from the smoke. 'My night vision can't see through the smoke so I can't use my quirk effectively and without my swords I can't block incoming attacks, I'll have to avoid them using my agility.' Yuuto thought as he slid underneath another incoming shuriken.
Eventually he reached the end of the long smoky corridor only to be met with a CLANG! CLANG! Two men dressed in traditional ninja gi's appeared one on each side of him and both of them throughout a chain with a clasp at the end, one grabbing hold of yuuto's left leg and the other locking on to his right arm. The chains were pulled tight to secure yuuto but he simply warped out of this hold too.
Yuuto teleported behind the Ninja to his left and delivered a swift chop to the back of his head, knocking him out cold before warping over to the other ninja and doing the same. 'I'm getting kinda sick of this fun house ninja crap.' Yuuto thought as he continued forward. Yuuto entered a massive room and immediately upon doing so most of the floor dropped out from underneath him creating a vast pit that he couldn't see the other side of. "Seriously?" Yuuto muttered as he tapped the side of his helmet and the visual feed in his helmet intensified showing the other side of the pit where he spotted a doorway to a well let room. "Looks like we're finally at the end of this whole thing." Yuuto said before warping to the other side of the pit.
"Well I made it." Yuuto said as he passed through the threshold. "So what was thaaaaa…" Immediately upon entering the well lit room yuuto's legs got caught on a thin strand and he began to fall. 'A trip wire? Don't tell me I triggered some sort of trap!' WHAM! There was no trap, yuuto simply fell face first onto the wooden floor. "Oww…."
"I think that's enough tormenting for now." The same voice from before called out to the fallen U.A. Student. Yuuto pushed himself up just enough to watch the trip wire reform itself into a man with jagged white hair wearing a blue and red mask along with matching Gi and robes and a golden shoulder piece, it was the number six ranked hero, Ninja Hero: Edgeshot!
'I should've interned with Mount Lady…' Yuuto thought as he began to push himself off he didn't get far before the Ninja Hero threw Yuuto's Katana's down in front of him.
"Your quirk is impressive, being able to instantaneously move yourself and others anywhere you can see makes you the fastest person in your line of vision but I wanted to prove with today's exercise that you're not untouchable." The season pro explained as Yuuto stood up and dusted himself off. "During the sports festival you disposed of your first to opponents with relative ease and the reason you lost to Shoto Todoroki in the fashion that you did was because you were hasty and seeked to end your fight in a single move. This tells me you are over confident in your abilities which can be a fatal flaw for even the most talented pro hero. That's something we'll look to fix during your internship. Do your best!"
"Yes sir…." Yuuto said as an awkward bead of sweat began to drip down his forehead. 'I guess telling me wouldn't've sufficed huh? Don't tell things are gonna be like this the whole week…'
