Myles, Bobby, Jack, and Dimitrius returned to the bull pen semi-triumphant. Sue rushed to them immediately. Myles was holding Ella in his arms. She appeared completely fine and smiled at Sue.
"Is she all right?" Sue asked him, reaching to hold Ella's outstretched fingers.
"She's perfectly fine," Myles answered. He seemed to want to hold her, so Sue let him. She turned to Jack.
"Are you okay?" she asked.
"I'm just fine," he promised.
"You scared us half to death," Sue said. Lucy came over at this point and whole-heartedly whacked him on the arm as hard as she could.
"Ow!" Jack yelped.
"Don't you ever do that again!" Lucy chastised, shaking her fist at him. "You could have had the decency to tell us that you had a plan for being found after getting kidnapped!"
"I know, I know. I'm sorry," Jack apologized, wincing and rubbing the spot where she'd hit him. His arm was smarting pretty good. Tara came up to him next and smacked him in the same spot, causing him to yelp once more.
"That's for not telling me you were gonna send me a tracking notification," she said.
"Lucy already covered that," Jack pointed out.
"Well, I covered it again," Tara sniffed. She went back to her desk. Bobby was sniggering at his desk as he observed.
"Are you gonna hit me too?" Jack asked Sue.
"Maybe," she said. "I haven't decided."
"I really am sorry," he told her. She gave him a slight smile in return. Jack looked at his team, who were all watching him.
"We almost had Renner, and I know we can get him again," Jack reasoned. "He still wants Ella, so the next time he tries to get her, we'll be waiting."
"He'll be plenty pissed that there's nothing on that laptop," Bobby reasoned.
"Good. I want him to be mad," Jack nodded. "He can't mess with us and get away with it. That being said, we need to stay here for now in case he's planning on catching us by surprise at home. I don't trust the safe houses either. If he can get inside the FBI, he can find them and get inside them too."
"I did also plant a tracking device on the laptop," Tara chimed in. "I put one on Ella because I didn't know if they'd get separated. I didn't want to take that chance."
"The more the better," Jack nodded. "Have you located it?"
"It's moving for right now," she gestured at her screen. "I'll let you know when it stops."
"Okay. That's good," Jack said. "See? We got him."
"Don't get cocky," Myles pointed out. Ella was still in his arms. She was resting her head against his shoulder. He felt even more protective of her now.
"Jack? Garrett wants to see you," Lucy said now, phone in hand. "He's just got in."
"All right," Jack sighed.
"I'll go with you," D said. They headed out together. Myles left to take Ella for a walk about, and Sue offered to go with him. Lucy left to go speak with the head of security.
"You okay?" Bobby asked Tara. She looked at him, and he gestured to his face, implying he was asking about her wound on hers.
"Oh, that," she said with a small laugh. "I'm fine. I took one for the team."
"Sometimes we gotta do that," Bobby agreed. She smiled at him and ducked her head. She hadn't been alone with him since the hospital, and she wasn't sure what to say to him. She got up to get some coffee when it happened.
"Oh," she said, grabbing where the pain had struck.
"You okay?" Bobby asked from his desk, watching her. Tara did not feel right at all. She had been having cramps on and off since the night before, but she had dismissed them as nothing. Her top priority had also been Bobby's safety and finding Jack, not minor cramps. She had planned on calling her doctor about it this afternoon when she had a moment and if things had calmed down. She hadn't anticipated it being anything serious.
"I...I don't know," she answered truthfully. The pain subsided slowly, and she continued pouring her decaf coffee. She barely moved an inch when it hit her harder and faster. She doubled over this time, her coffee splashing out of her mug.
"Tara," Bobby said, getting up and going over to her now. He was concerned. "What's going on?" He took her mug from her and set it on the counter.
The pain was very strong now. Her mind fluttered with panic. This kind of cramping was not good.
"Tara?" Bobby prompted again, and that's when she felt it.
"Oh no," she whispered. She did not have to look down to know what had just happened.
"Hey, talk to me," Bobby urged, holding her shoulders now. Then he looked down.
"I...I..." she tried when he looked back at her with a startled expression. The words were lost in her throat.
"You're bleeding," he said, sounding a little panicked.
"I have to go," she whispered, but she was unable to move. She felt frozen. He removed his jacket quickly and tied it around her waist to hide the visible stain on her pants.
"Come on," he said, putting his hand on her lower back and escorting her out.
"Where are you two going?" Lucy asked, coming in as they were going out.
"Just out for a jiffy. Be back before you know it," Bobby answered, not stopping.
"But...we're supposed to stay here!" Lucy called after them.
"We'll be just fine!" Bobby called back. They got to his car without further incident, but Tara was crying now. Bobby drove quickly, shooting looks at her every so often.
Tara fumbled for her phone, but she simply stared at it once she got it in her hand.
"Why didn't you tell us?" Bobby asked.
"Because of this very reason right here," she answered numbly. She hadn't wanted anyone to know if she miscarried. So much for that being a secret now.
They pulled into the hospital parking lot, and Bobby went around to help Tara out. He guided her to the doors. It felt strange being back here in a matter of hours together.
"How far along?" he questioned as they walked.
"Just over three months," she replied quietly.
"I'm so sorry," he said right as they arrived at the front desk.
"Yes?" the lady at the desk asked.
"I'm having a miscarriage," Tara answered. "Right now. There...there's a lot of blood." She gasped with pain as it hit her again. She felt chilled suddenly as well. She could feel blood gushing now. She feared she was hemorrhaging.
"Oh, dear. Okay. Hang tight. I'll call someone," she advised. Without thinking, Tara reached for Bobby's hand and squeezed it tightly.
Bobby's mind was whirling. So, she had been pregnant when they had gone on their date. Had she known? Of course, she had known. She had to have known. Right?
"I didn't know," Tara answered as if reading his mind. "Not then. I'm never regular. I just assumed it was a long spell. I figured it out right after we..." She paused, not wanting to say it out loud. Their kiss. They had moved past it. She didn't want to bring it all up again.
"It's all right," Bobby assured her.
"I didn't even know if I wanted this baby," she whispered. "But now I know. I really did."
Bobby felt his heart break inside just looking at her tear stained face.
"I'm sorry about your jacket," she said.
"Don't even...it's fine. Did you text Stanley?" he asked, changing the subject.
"Not yet," she answered. "He doesn't even know." She had only known for barely three weeks herself. How far along she was had shocked her. She'd never expected to even be able to get pregnant with the way her cycle was. Looking back now, there were signs, but she had chalked them up to other things.
"Oh, Tara..." Bobby said.
"I was scared to tell him. I don't know his thoughts on children. I was afraid he'd leave me..." she trailed off. The fact that she felt indifferent about that now in this moment was interesting to her. Bobby reached to pull her into him, and he held her tightly as she cried some more until they came for her and took her to a room.
...
Sue watched Myles with Ella and smiled. He was quite taken with the little girl she noticed. He was making faces at her now and making her laugh.
"You've bonded with her quickly," she noted. "Like she has with you." Myles looked at her.
"I have. I know she's spent more time with Jack and you, but there's just something about her that draws me to her," Myles said. "I can't explain it."
"She reminds you of Natalie," Sue pointed out. "And you loved Natalie, so any part of Natalie you would naturally love too."
"That makes sense. Yea, that's it," Myles nodded slowly. Ella cooed and reached to playfully smack his face, promptly laughing at him right after. "Do we know what's going to happen to her after this case is over?"
"I don't know," Sue replied. Myles let it go, and they started to head back to the bull pen together when Ella's bottom started to smell.
"Oh," Myles said.
"I've got it," Sue told him, reaching for Ella. She knew Myles wasn't quite at that step yet.
"Thanks," he said, handing her over. He watched Ella wave at him as she looked over Sue's shoulder while heading away from him. He lifted his hand to wave back, feeling sad inside and empty without her in his arms.
...
"Where's Tara and Bobby?" Jack asked when he returned from Garrett's office. He'd gotten a stern lecture, one he had anticipated. D hadn't been able to take some of the heat off of him, but Jack didn't mind. He'd done it in hopes that they would get Renner. It hadn't worked, so they had to make a new plan. They could do it. He was confident.
"They went out," Lucy answered. "They wouldn't say where, but they seemed rushed."
"Odd," Myles commented from his desk.
"Very odd," Jack agreed. "I kind of need Tara."
"She left her computer open to see the tracking progress," Lucy said. She was indeed sitting in Tara's chair. Jack went to look over her shoulder.
"It's stopped," he noted.
"I guess that means you're going to go find it?" Lucy asked.
"You guessed right," Jack nodded. Myles and D were already on their feet. He wished Bobby was with them. He couldn't understand where his friend was or why he'd left with Tara in such a hurry.
...
"You have to call him."
Tara knew Bobby was right, but she still felt scared. Bobby was sitting there giving her a look that said if she didn't, he would. In the end, she called him, and he came quickly. Bobby had left before he got there so as not to make things awkward.
"Tara," Stanley said, shock on his face at seeing her in the hospital bed. "What's wrong? What happened?!"
"Stanley," she said tearfully. "I...I have something to tell you."
"What?" he asked, taking her hand in his.
"I was pregnant," she said. "And now...I'm not."
She watched his expression as he stood there looking at her in shock.
"I...I don't know what to say," he started. He sank down into the chair beside her.
"I'm sorry I didn't tell you sooner," she said.
"It's okay. Are you okay?" he asked.
"I'm fine, just sad," she answered.
"Well, we will have to be more careful," he said. She looked at him, confused.
"What do you mean?" she asked.
"Um, I guess we should have talked about this sooner," Stanley said.
"Talked about what?" Tara asked, feeling her heart sink.
"Kids."
"What about them?"
"Well...I...I'm not one of those people who want them," Stanley said slowly. Tara stared at him. How could she have not known this about him?! It floored her.
"Oh," she said.
"I'm sorry," he said now.
"I, uh, I need to process all of this," she said, taking her hand back. He gave her a pained expression.
"I hope that doesn't change anything with us," he said.
Tara knew it did, but she was not in the mood to get into it with him just yet.
"If it's all right with you, I need to be alone for a bit," she said.
"Oh...okay."
She looked at her hands while he stood up. When he was gone, she started to cry again. She missed Bobby standing in the doorway, who had heard the entire exchange.
...
Sue had Ella in a boardroom after she'd cleaned her up. She was trying to keep Ella way from the bustle of the office for a little bit. Jack found her before too long.
"Hey," he said, shutting the door behind him. "Everything okay in here?"
"Seems to be," Sue answered. Ella clapped her hands and said the word "puppy" a few times, pointing at Levi. She had slowly been getting more verbal as time went on, which was a good sign.
"We're going out," Jack told her. "Hopefully this is it."
"I hope so too," Sue agreed. He hesitated before giving in and going to hug her. She held him tightly. She knew they'd get their chance to talk when this was finished. He rested his forehead against hers for a moment, one hand on her waist and the other cupping her face. She closed her eyes, feeling his closeness and trying to soak it in before he was gone again. He tapped her side, making her open her eyes again.
"I'll be back soon," he promised.
"Okay."
Feeling his lips on hers once more caused slight weakness in her knees. She gripped his arms tightly to prevent herself from falling over. Levi snorted from where he was on the ground. Ella clapped her hands again. Sue couldn't hear any of this, of course.
It was with great reluctance that Jack pulled away and gave her one last smile before letting her go and leaving her behind. Sue hugged herself and sat on the edge of the table.
"Well," she said to Ella. "Looks like it's just you and me again."
...
Bobby saw that Jack had been trying to call him. He'd texted saying they were going to get Renner. Bobby wanted to be with them, but he also didn't want to leave Tara. He knew she was broken right now, and he wanted to do anything he could to help put her back together. Somehow, he hadn't been surprised to hear Stanley say he didn't want children. Bobby, on the other hand, had always wanted a child one day. He waited a while before going back to check in on Tara. He'd gone to get her some new clothes for when she was discharged. He'd roughly guessed her sizes. She was resting her head back and staring at the ceiling when he entered.
"Hey," he said. "How are you?"
"Not good," she confessed, looking at him. "You didn't have to stay."
"Well, there was a risk of you unhooking yourself and walking on out of here, so I had to stay and make sure that didn't happen," he commented, trying to lighten the mood. A ghost of a smile crossed her lips.
"Thank you," she said.
"I, uh, got you some clothes," he added, holding up the bag before setting it down next to the bed.
"I definitely don't want to be walking out of here in this thing they dare call a gown," she said with a slight chuckle. "Thanks." He just nodded and stood there for a moment without saying anything. Then he made up his mind.
"So," he said, sitting down beside her. "The nausea the other day?"
"Baby," she answered. "I mean, I do get car sick, but being pregnant makes me even more so."
"And when you told me you were crying cos it was 'that time of the month?'"
"Baby," she nodded again. She felt bad for lying to him. Out of anyone, she didn't ever want to lie to him. She just hadn't wanted to complicate things.
"You had cramps all night last night?" he asked. She nodded. "Why didn't you say anything?"
"I thought it was normal," she answered. "I was also very focused on you, if you remember."
"I hate to think that because of that you lost your baby," he said.
"I think I was losing her anyway," Tara said sadly.
"Her? You knew the gender?"
"No. I just felt it was a girl," Tara answered, looking at her fingers. She was playing with them absently on her chest.
"She'd have been a real looker, just like her mama," Bobby said softly. Tara gave a wobbly smile at this, and fresh tears escaped her eyes and slid down her cheeks. He reached to take her hand in his. "You can always try again someday."
"Apparently not," she choked out. "St-Stanley doesn't w-want kids."
"I see," Bobby said, pretending he didn't know. "So, what are you gonna do?"
"I don't know," she answered, reaching to wipe away more tears that were falling. "I care about him, but things haven't been feeling the same for a while now. I didn't even know this about him, that he didn't want children, so what else don't I know? I'm just rethinking everything right now."
"Can I promise you something?" Bobby asked, making her look at him.
"What's that?" she questioned.
"I will always be here for you no matter what," he told her. "Night or day. Anything. I'm here. Okay?" Tara just nodded, squeezing his hand tightly as more tears fell from her eyes. He wanted to do more for her, but this would have to suffice.
...
Jack patted his body armor and checked his rifle before the truck stopped. D and Myles were beside him along with other team members. According to the GPS, the laptop was in this apartment complex. When the back doors opened, everyone filed out one at a time, and Jack hit the ground running. They went inside and up the stairs.
"You're almost on top of it," Lucy's voice said in his ear. The approached the apartment door, and Jack nodded to Myles, who moved to kick it in. They entered the room hollering "FBI!" at the top of their lungs. Their man who had escaped before was diving for his gun. D took him out. The other men were taken out as well when they moved to fire at them.
Renner was standing alone in the bedroom, waiting for them.
"Well done," he said to Jack, slowly clapping his left hand on his right wrist. "Well done."
That's when Jack noticed Renner was pressing down on a detonator in his right hand, and he wasn't only hooked up to a vest but had the vest hooked up to the rest of the room.
"Stop!" Jack called to Myles, who tried to come in behind him. "Get out. Get everyone out right now!"
Myles wasted no time repeating this message to the others, and footsteps started pounding out the door and down the hall and stairs.
"What about you?" he asked Jack after.
"Just go," Jack ordered. His heart was racing. Renner was smiling.
"Jack..." Myles tried.
"GO!"
"Yes, Myles, listen to Jack," Renner said. "We wouldn't want anything to happen to you after Natalie spent so much time ensuring you were okay."
"Excuse me?" Myles asked, moving closer. Jack threw an arm out to stop him, but it was proving difficult.
"Myles..." he grunted.
"I always knew there was someone else," Renner commented, examining the detonator in his hand idly. "She couldn't hide that from me. I found out that PI was looking into you, and I knew she was going to leave me for you the moment she got the chance to. I couldn't let that happen."
"You...you bastard!" Myles shouted, fists clenched. Jack was using both hands now to try and stop him from launching himself onto Renner.
"It was very satisfying," Renner said softly. "She was crying for you by the end."
"Let me at him, Jack!" Myles roared. "LET ME AT HIM!"
"STEP OFF!" Jack bellowed back, giving Myles a shove in the chest now. "Step off, Myles! Get out of here. That's an order!"
Myles glared at Renner, but he knew he couldn't shoot the man because then they'd both die with him. He yanked out of Jack's grip and stepped backwards slowly.
"I'll send her your love when I see her again," Renner sneered. Jack waited until Myles was gone completely before facing Renner again.
"What do you want this time?" he asked.
"I don't want anything, Jack," Renner answered. "I've decided my legacy must end, and you're coming with me. But know this, there will be someone else to pick up where I left off. Ella's got my blood, my DNA. She'll carry on my legacy one day. Of that, I have faith."
"No, she won't," Jack shook his head hard. "I'll see to it."
"You can try," Renner smiled. Jack knew without a doubt that Renner was going to let go of the detonator because he was cornered. He had no other options; nowhere to go, and he wasn't about to do jail time. Jack started to run.
"You'll never make it, Jack! I hope you told her you love her!" Renner shouted after him.
Then the building exploded.
