Hello again, fellow Titan lovers! Hope you enjoyed that last chapter. This chapter will take place after Memories Lost so Raven and Beastboy are living as the adult trainers in Titans Tower with the new Teen Titans and their two children. Hope you enjoy this chapter. I don't own Teen Titans.
Chapter 12: Literature-25
"I'm serious, Garfield. These kids have to have the education we were deprived of as children-don't give me that look-a GED is a valid and respectable alternative to education but we could have benefited from a more…formal education. Don't they deserve to have an actual education instead of looking at a computer screen watching YouTube vidoes?"
Raven stared imploringly at her husband across the table, willing him with her eyes…and failing miserably. Garfield's face was scrunched with uncertainty. Raven tried to keep her face blank-she had to call his bluff. "I dunno Rae." Here we go. Raven closed her eyes for a second before opening them again. "These new Titans are really busy with training just like we were-"
"We also didn't have adult guidance-like we are providing for these Titans."
"Rae, we hardly count as adults here!"
"Garfield, we are almost 30."
"Come on, they can get their GED's like we did-and we turned out fine!"
"Not great."
He stuck out his tongue at her, causing her to chuckle. "But seriously-Raven. I'm not sure we have time to teach them, train them, and take care of the twins!" Raven blinked at him, slightly narrowing her eyes. They didn't disagree very much (well-nothing compared to when they were kids) but when they did, they usually came to some compromise. Rolling his green eyes, Garfield shook his head in defeat. "Aren't you supposed to be on my side for better or worse?"
Evidently he wasn't going to budge. Before she could open her mouth to take a different approach, the door exploded inward with a blast of green energy. The couple swirled to see their two three-year old children dashing into the Common Room, shouting in excitement at the top of their lungs. "Mommy! Daddy! Play time! Play time! Play time!" Glancing at one another, Raven and Gar glanced at one another in amusement-priorities completely changed the moment kids were in the picture.
"Hi! How was daycare? Did you learn anything cool today?" Gar picked up both kids into a hug as Raven stood up and gently caressed her children's faces. It was amazing to see how much they looked like the two of them! She gently kissed Mark (who yelled gross and wiped off his cheek) and Arella (who giggled and said Mark got mommy-cooties.)
"Hi Daddy! Hi Mommy! Today the teacher told us to sit down and Mark got in trouble and had a time-out but I made a panda bear to eat the goldfish snacks so I got him out and we went to the playground and then we had a nap." Arella began to rattle on-she took after her father that way. Mark vigorously nodded along, a huge smile on his face. His quiet nature did not negate the fact he was also his father's child.
Gar narrowed his brow, putting on his stern face-something he was still working on. For once, Raven didn't have to be the bad guy. "So you got into big trouble at school?" Mark and Arella shifted in his arms to wiggle down, landing on their feet. Both put their arms behind their backs and began to swivel one foot.
"Well, umm, not big trouble, Daddy." Bashful, Mark wiggled his foot, looking down at his shoes. "Just a little trouble." Looking up at them through his eyelashes, he nudged his sister. Somehow these kids acted much older than three-years old. Arella thrust her chin up, trying to look brave as she held up a piece of paper to Raven. Raven tried to keep her face neutral-she was used to hiding her emotions-but since being free of her father and marrying Gar it became more and more difficult. Plus kids could read you like a book. "Mommy-can we have a snack?" Glancing up, she forced a small smile on her lips.
"Of course." Using her powers, she quickly got out paper plates, apple slices, and peanut butter for the children and haphazardly threw them in front of the seats. Arella and Mark called thank you but Raven and Gar were already leaning over the note from the teacher to pay much attention. Gar quietly read it out-loud as Raven followed along.
"Dear Mr. and Mrs. Logan-you'd think they'd know it was Logan-Roth, those people even read our children's names?-Sorry Rae. Dear Mr. and Mrs. Logan, I regret to inform you that Arella and Mark caused multiple disturbances in the past three weeks. Today alone they created multiple green animals from their artwork, used their powers to fly the teacher around the room, and destroyed the fish tank. The damages to the school are substantial and our insurance cannot cover all the damage to the school or the cost of the therapy sessions the twin's teacher requires from the trauma. After careful consideration (careful my ass), the children would do better in another educational facility with more one-on-one attention and care. All the children's belongings are in their backpack. We regret this decision but believe it is best for everyone. Thank you for choosing our school to educate your children and we regret the termination of services for your children. Sincerely, Sandra Thompson, Edu."
Lowering the paper, Raven looped her arm through Garfield's and looked at their children playing with their food and chattering away to one another in their special twin-language. "Gar…there is only one option." She felt him sigh as he looped his arm around her waist and squeeze. Glancing up at him, she noticed a look of acceptance come over his face.
"You're right. You have your job and I have to train the teens-but maybe if you worked remote or something for a while and taught classes as I watched the kids?" Despite herself, Raven smiled happily up at him. Groaning, Gar shook his head as Mark began to wave his hands and engulfed his sister with green energy to fly her around the room. Things began to break as the twins began to rampage around the Common Room with their powers. An exhausted look suddenly flooded his face, causing the slightest moment of doubt in Raven's heart. "Mark, put your sister down…" He looked down at Raven with a tired smiled. "You're right-I'm not sure I can watch the twins and the teenagers at the same time so homeschooling probably isn't the worst idea." BAM! BANG! POW! The twins yelled as they continued to break the furniture but Raven just leaned into Gar's arm, hoping that this isn't the worst idea yet.
The rest of the weekend was a flurry of activity (and complaining from the Teen Titans, much to Raven's annoyance. Didn't they know it was for their own good?) Raven even got permission to work remotely from the bookstore she had been working part-time during the day-despite the Titan's government funding, bills still had to be paid. Garfield was just as busy, arranging schedules and finding lesson-plans for three-year old's. (And biology lesson plans-he knew infinitely more about science than she did-and it would give him a break from the twins.) Finally, Monday rolled around and Raven was utterly exhausted.
Stepping into the training room, Raven quickly arranged it into a classroom, complete with a smartboard and projector and desks. Taking a deep sip of her English Breakfast tea, she eyed the bleary-eyed teenagers. All six kids filed in and awkwardly shuffled to sit in seats. Jaime, better known to the world as Blue Beetle, sat front and center, hands folded in front of himself. Cassie and Megan (Wondergirl and Miss Martian) sat in the back giggling and glancing at Superboy, better known as Conner. Cassie winked at him, causing the silent boy to grow red in the face. Damian, the new Robin, sat brooding with his back to the wall, assessing each of his team members with narrowed eyes, stopping his eyes to grimace at Impulse (Bart) eating over 20 scrambled eggs in under thirty seconds.
"Uhh, Raven, are we gonna get started on this or what?" Raven shook her head, flushing at Cassie's question. Awkwardly brushing her fingers through her hair, Raven gave the Amazon a curt nod.
"Of course. We're going to start with Literature. I chose a fairly simple novel to begin your English curriculum-A Tale of Two Cities. You are going to spend the next twenty minutes breaking into groups of two to discuss the symbolism and characterizations of the novel that you will focus on while reading for your first essay. You can choose your own partners."
"Of course-sounds good! Damian, you want to be my partner?" Jaime grinned widely at the youngest member of the team.
Damian blinked at Blue Beetle, then rolled his eyes as Megan and Cassie both rushed to Conner, asking him which of them he wanted to work with when Bart dashed forward and said he already read this in the future and didn't see the hype but spoke too fast for anyone to understand. Turning back to Jaime, he shrugged. "I suppose you are the sufficient choice-though I would rather work alone."
"HEY!" All the teens shouted at once, causing the room to dissolve into chaos. Raven sighed, rubbing her temples. It's worth it. It'll all be worth it. And so homeschool began.
All the Titans were extremely bored and confused the whole first week. Only Jaime seemed to be enjoying classes. He was the star student, acing every assignment and grasping every concept thrown at him. Despite this, Raven was annoyed that he wasn't even challenged when asked about symbolism of Tale of Two Cities and what characters represented in the story. Damian on the other hand was making perfect scores in everything except literacy. He didn't understand the symbolism and Cassie stated it was because he was too literal so of course he didn't get it and then the day dissolved into a fist fight from there. Raven was sure her Titans never acted that immature-well, besides her husband.
The other teenagers were just as ridiculous. Cassie and Megan were constantly flirting with Conner or making fun of the other boys. Bart was a continuous, non-stop stream of talking, and Conner never said a word-making him Raven's favorite. Damian and Jaime were constantly battling for being top of the class, continually one-uping each other in class and trying to undermine the other. Raven felt like she was a teenager again-constant noise, fighting, and angst. A pimple even popped up on the tip of her nose, much to Garfield's amusement.
At the end of the first week, Raven sat with her face in one hand, her head pounding from all the escalated emotions around her. The kids were finally quiet-the first time all day. They were working on their first history exam over Themyscira. Taking a deep breath, Raven muttered her mantra under her breath. She couldn't believe it was the weekend already-how was she going to do this next week, much less for a whole school year. Suddenly, she sensed a spike of emotion from Damian's direction. "Oh no…"
"DO NOT TRY TO TAKE CREDIT FOR MY WORK, IMPULSE!" Damian whirled around, suddenly three batarangs posed to strike. "Quit running to see my answers!"
"I'm not! You're just paranoid-I'm from the future, remember?!" Bart held up his test, pointing to his answers.
Cassie squinted at the answers and snorted. "Yeah-if your answers weren't exactly the same as Robin's, I might believe you. Didn't play Clash of Clans until 4am instead of studying?"
"See-you did steal my answers!"
"I did not, Bird Brain!"
"Can you all just shut up?! I'm trying to finish the test!"
"Oh, shut up Jaime-you're just worried about losing your perfect record!"
Suddenly, everyone stood up shouting and threatening each other. Raven was impressed-it was only the fifth one that day. She felt more than heard Gar sneak into the room, holding the hand of a twin in each of his own. Raven wordlessly looked at him-she didn't look that haggard…did she? Pulling Mark into her lap, she noticed Arella wiggle into Garfield's arms and shush the teens. "Fighting bad! You too loud!"
The teens stopped fighting for a moment, glancing at one another before Megan threw her hands up to calm things down. "She's right. Maybe we should take a breath and just get back to finishing the test."
"Oh, shut up Megan!"
"Don't tell her to shut up, Damian! You shut up!"
And the bickering continued, the test completely forgotten.
Raven wasn't sure if she wanted to cry, scream, or just crawl into a ball and sleep. Garfield glanced at her and sighed. She was surprised she couldn't sense his usual joy that radiated from him constantly. "Teaching is supposed to be rewarding, right?"
The next few weeks were a blur. Every single day was a struggle. The math was over her head. The history too biased and written by white men for her taste. The literature too hard for the teens to grasp. Evidently Garfield was having some success with biology but he still felt lost when trying to teach Arella and Mark the basics of "living and not killing themselves", according to him.
She smiled slightly at herself as fingered her communicator. Raven was so grateful for Garfield-he kept her sane through all of this. Something that would have seemed impossible in the past. He still took care of the twins when she was working and teaching and he even ran training sessions for the team. A twinge of guilt tugged at her heart. How could she feel like complaining when he was working just as hard as her-if not harder?
Snapping open her phone, she dialed the one person she trusted to give her honest advice. Dick's inquisitive face popped up onto her communicator. "Hey Raven. Wasn't expecting a call from you. Everything okay?"
"Does something have to be wrong for me to call you?"
"Well…you never really do."
Ouch. He did make a good point. "I'm sorry, Dick. I should make more of an effort."
He shrugged, not seeming offended in the slightest. "It's a two-way street, Raven. I could call you too." He raised an eyebrow. "Now I know you're not wanting vacation tips about Bludhaven. What's going on?"
Raven had forgotten how irritating Dick could be-and tactless. Sighing, she shook her head. She hated being this vulnerable but Dick was like family-and she was desperate for any advice she could receive. "Garfield and I have been teaching the new team educational curriculum-what we didn't have the opportunity to receive at their age due to our lifestyle and limited exposure to scholastic resources." A pang of irritation rang through at the amused smirk on Dick's face but she ignored it. "Keeping them engaged is extremely difficult-and Gar and I are at our limit between the twins, training, and teaching. The only time I can complete my work for the book store is to stay up then finish grading assignments after that. I do not see how we can sustain this lifestyle for much longer. Though he doesn't say it, Garfield is at his wits end trying to take care of Arella and Mark."
Dick abruptly began to laugh, holding his sides. Anger flared through her-maybe they hadn't grown up as much as she had thought. "This is serious, Dick! I'm asking for your advice!"
Waving his hand in apology (and struggling to keep his amusement out of his voice) Dick wiped a tear away. "Sorry, I just never have heard you complain this much-or ever. Couples really do start to look alike." Raven closed her eyes and muttered her mantra quietly before looking back at him. Though her overtly demonic side hadn't returned since defeating her father for the last time, she still felt like her dark form would rear its head at her former leader. "Look…when we were kids, I seriously considered education-and not Mad Mod's school." Despite herself, the corners of Raven's mouth twitched in amusement at the memory. "But with you and Kori's nonexistent education and the rest of us having informal training it didn't seem realistic so I suggested we get GEDs. But I also still wanted you guys motivated-so I just let you do your thing. Yours was reading, Kori's was learning Earth culture, Gar's was video games, and Vic's was his car." She noticed his shoulders shrug even though they weren't in the screen. "It worked out best for everyone."
"So if you really had a choice, you would have always had us training?"
"Hey-I'm not Batman! But yeah…if I had we wouldn't have been a team long…"
Raven tugged at her cloak pensively. "Electives." She thought out loud before looking up to see Dick nodding his head in agreement. "That might be a good choice. Thank you, Richard. I appreciate your advice…and we miss you."
Dick's face softened over the screen then ran a finger under his nose. "Me too. So-"
Suddenly the door slammed open to reveal Garfield, his hair disheveled and eyes bloodshot. "Robin? I mean Night-Dude-I mean Dick!" Gar rapidly rubbed his eyes then blinked, smiling haggardly at the screen. "Did you beat the Penguin Joke Guy?" He began to slowly waver, Raven quickly taking a chair and shoving under him. He gratefully sat down and closed his eyes, leaning his head back. "Raven, is someone on the phone?"
Glancing back at Dick, she grimaced. Dick's mouth was slightly agape but he quickly closed it and nodded to Raven. "Yeah, electives and study breaks might be good."
At first, everything seemed to look up. The moment Raven suggested electives online and study breaks, the teens were ecstatic. She even got a chance to catch up on work and read a whole chapter of a book in one sitting-the first time in what felt like decades. Dick was right…for about a second. At first Raven could sense the elation of mood from all the children. But soon she started to notice electives may not have been the best idea for these particular teens.
Misshapen sculptures Megan created for her online art class were appearing around the Tower, one scaring Arella so badly that she had nightmares for three days. Raven had to admire Megan for having worse artistic skills than she did.
On Wednesday of that week, a rocket built by Bart for his physics elective blasted into Wondergirl's room and destroyed all of her furniture. Raven gazed down onto the rocky shore below to see Bart, Jaime, and (she couldn't resist rolling her eyes) Garfield holding a dwindling fuse stick in their hands.
Cassie's own self-proclaimed study hall ended up turning into a glorified naptime. And Raven thanked every deity she knew that Victor had sound-proofed the garage, because she couldn't take the 'band' that was forming for music class. Conner, Damian, and Jaime were not exactly the Beatles. Evidently it wasn't enough because Garfield and Mark always had to wear earplugs when the boys were practicing their 'music'.
Each week began to become more and more burdensome. Raven couldn't decide what she hated more-the grading, the lesson planning, or falling behind on her work. She and Garfield hadn't had a moment alone together between training and teaching. She even got her first reprimand from her job for missing a shipment from Portland to the warehouse. Though she knew education was important-she wasn't sure if she could keep up with all this work.
After two months of this, Raven finally lay in bed next to Garfield, who had his own arm flung over his eyes. "I don't know how Dick did it all." She muttered to herself as she mindlessly ran her fingers through his green hair. Gar wordlessly groaned at her, his left ear twitching. "I knew teachers had a difficult time but it never occurred to me it would be this hard."
"You think you have it hard?!" Gar flung his arm off his face, hitting the side of the bed. She bit her lip to hide her smile-she was wondering when he would crack. He really was too good for her and she felt his optimism wash over her despite his negative words. "Arella and Mark are going to KILL me!" He sat up against the headboard, looking at her inquisitively. Raven noted the serious look in his eye and sat up too, gently rubbing his arm. His fang was poking out of his lower lip as his frown deepened. "I feel like a horrible dad! I mean-I love them both so much but I also kind of want to give them away."
Raven blinked twice and before she could stop herself, she burst into laughter. Huh-she stopped herself-when was the last time I laughed? It was a common enough occurrence since marrying Garfield, but the past two months had sucked all her joy. She realized that Garfield hadn't been laughing much either.
Slapping her hand off his arm, Gar turned to her (though he tried to have a stern look he was massively failing as Raven could see the usual twinkle had returned to his eye.) "I'm serious, Rae!" He ducked his head to show her the top of his head. Thrusting his thumb at a spot near the back, he grumbled, "Look, Arella ripped out some hair and left a giant red spot."
"How could you even see that?" Raven questioned, not seeing anything. Gar waved her off and turned again to face her.
"And Mark! Man, I love that kid but he is a walking disaster zone! I don't even think I was that accident prone as a kid!"
"Didn't you get bit by a green monkey?"
"RAVEN! I mean-he keeps having crazy accidents with his powers and almost killing himself or me! And Arella keeps turning things into animals to chase him around. Yesterday, she turned some couch into a jaguar and it chased them around the room. I literally had just gone to use the bathroom for the first time since before they woke up! It was 2pm!" Garfield threw his hands into the air for emphasis. Evidently Raven's amusement was written on her face as Garfield began laughing and pulled her into a tight hug. "Sorry, I guess I'm just a bit overwhelmed with being a parent to toddlers AND grumpy teenagers."
Warmth spread through Raven's chest-they hadn't spent time together like this in months. She wordlessly snuggled into his arms. As he rested his head on top of hers, he (characteristically) continued to talk. "With all the animals she has made, maybe we could open an animal sanctuary and with all the money it makes PAY someone to watch the kids."
"I thought you were opposed to zoos." Raven quipped, unable to keep the amusement out of her voice. Despite training all her life to repress and hide her emotions, Raven was not as good at it as she used to be.
"Yeah, sanctuaries are different."
"So I guess we are going to cross preschool teacher off the list of future careers." Suddenly, Raven stiffened, a thought drifting across her mind. The only person she could truly be this vulnerable with was Garfield-and if she couldn't be vulnerable with him, then she was truly lost. "Honestly, I'm not sure how much longer I can handle working from home and teaching and being a parent myself…What are you doing?"
Garfield slowly sat up, holding Raven away from himself at an arm's length. His grin grew wide, showing all of his teeth. Raven wrinkled her nose at him as his eyes began to dance. "So I was right-we shouldn't have done the homeschool thing." He stated, causing annoyance to course through her body. Oh no-not the 'I-Was-Right' Dance. She quickly sprang up, a new energy coursing through her body. She didn't want him to wake up the twins in the next room.
"No-"
Springing up out of bed, Garfield whirled around to face her, his delight washing over Raven. "We should educate the kids-we never got that opportunity!" Gar mimicked her voice, which if Raven was willing to admit to herself was eerily accurate. "I was right and everyone should bow down to my awesomeness! I think it's time for a little dance."
"Please, Garfield, don't-"
"I was right! I was right! I was right! I was right!" Garfield began to dance, spinning in a circle and doing the cabbage patch and disco points. Raven groaned, hiding her face in her hands. There was still some 'Beastboy' in Garfield, even though now they were almost 30.
Just at that moment, the door swished open to reveal two sleepy-eyed twins in pajamas, blinking at their dad. Both of their faces lit up and they dashed in, joining in on the dance. Giggling, they sang along to the tune. "Dad-dy's right! Dad-dy's right! Dad-dy's right!" Garfield laughed, picking up the two kids and tossing them into the air as a gorilla.
If only time could freeze there. Raven's heart melted in her chest as she quickly got up. One thing she had learned from Garfield over the years-never waste a moment. As Garfield caught the children, he shifted back into his human self so Raven could pull her small family into a hug. Quickly giving Gar a kiss on the cheek (Mark stuck out his tongue and Arella cupped her hands to her face and sighed), Raven smiled at her two children before turning back to her husband. "You were right-but maybe we were both right." Gar raised an eyebrow in confusion but she just smiled and took Mark into her arms. "But you both should be in bed-come on."
The next day, Raven signed the Titans up for online classes at Jump City High-with the exception of literature. Those high school teachers didn't know a good book if it hit them in the face. As all the teens settled onto a computer screen to read, each looking utterly exhausted from the amount of homework their new teacher assigned them, Garfield slipped into the room. Raven was working for her actual paying job for once-the online library for the bookstore needed to be organized sometime!
Glancing up at her husband, she gave him a small smile-well, the corners of her mouth twitched but he knew what it meant. "The twins are down for the count-and I might have found a new daycare for superkids! You can still make portals, right?"
One of Raven's eyebrows twitched but she nodded to him.
Grinning at her, Garfield exaggeratedly wiped his hand over his forehead. "Whew! Okay, one problem solved." Turning toward the silent teens, he raised an eyebrow. "Why are they all so silent?"
Raven caught his eye and held up a binder that read 'Introduction to Jump City High Online Program'. She noted the quiver of Gar's pointed ears when suddenly he smashed her into a hug. Raven tried to ignore all the chuckles and confused looks from the Titans in the room.
"Thank God-I have never loved you more!"
Hope you enjoyed this chapter! I have been wanting to write a chapter about Raven and Garfield as an established married couple. After all their years of getting to know each other's communication styles, I feel like they would be able to communicate and understand each other's needs fairly well. Also, I always wondered about the Titans' education. I am all for GEDs personally, I think it is a great way to get a degree but I also think Raven would want to a high school degree since she didn't get the chance to have one. Anyway, I hope you enjoyed this chapter. Please let me know what you think and thank you for following, favoriting, commenting, and most of all reading my series of stories. Until next time!
