A/N: Thanks for those who like this story and commented it. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions for future episodes, I need some for the following episodes: basically all the Season 3 episodes after You Posted what?! except for "Brother Battle" because I personally believe that episode takes place in between You Posted What?! and Armed and Dangerous. Just no Season 4. Thank you.
Chapter 10: Spies In High Places
Douglas picked up Janelle from her house, sitting in the back with Leo, who was looking at his uncle suspiciously. Seriously, the man insisted on driving them both on their date, so Leo was hoping he wasn't going to spy on him because of the lack of trust between the two Davenports. After finally making it to the restaurant, Leo quickly ushered Janelle out before looking back at Douglas.
"Please promise me you're not thinking of spying on us."
"Pft, no," Douglas answered while averting his eyesight from his strong-willed nephew. "I promise Leo, I'm not going to spy on you."
Leo gave him a gesture before leaving the car. When he looked the way, Douglas pretended to leave. However, in reality he just circled around so that way, Leo would not notice him there. That would be just his luck.
…..
Leo and Janelle sat by their table at 5: 30 at the restaurant, unaware of Douglas watching them. Janelle was not sure what to say to him now that they were alone. She was still angry at him for nearly trying to kill her two months ago; however, when she saw his face, Janelle's anger melted away. Meanwhile, Leo sat there, nervously, unsure what to say and Janelle thought it was kind of cute. She was just glad to be around Leo and none of his step-father's inventions. And on most of those occasions, his siblings were around. It was only an hour into the date, and the two boyfriend and girlfriend had nothing to say. Who she had to blame was his uncle, Douglas, because he was the one who gave the bionic arm to a man-child? However, she wouldn't let just one action deem the man.
Leo knows that she was trying to reconcile with him and it was working. These two have not had a nice date in a rather long time. Not since their ride in the helicopter. She would have to get to know Leo's family because she never really bonded with them before. It was mostly because she was too scared to be around them. But now that they were known bionics to the world, Janelle was actually getting interested in them. In fact, it had been her topic for the science fair if Leo hadn't, uh, accidentally destroyed his work and try to kill her. However, that would be a conversation for another time. She was too invested in her date with Leo to worry about it. However, to Leo, she just stays in silence. They are both unaware that both of them are nervous, want this date to work out, and are trying to reconcile. Finally, Janelle was the first to speak.
"What are you thinking of having?" she asked. Leo looked away from his menu and looked at Janelle, seeing the question in his eyes.
"Um, I think I'll have the lobster and flounder," Leo answered as the two stared at each other in awkwardness. Slowly, they each brought up their menus so the other would not see their reaction.
So far, this date is NOT going as I planned, Leo thought. Don't just sit there. Apologize to her for trying to kill you other than answering her question what you'll get.
So far, this is the weirdest-and-not-so interesting date I had in mind, Janelle thought. Don't just sit there, say something to him other than asking for him what he is going to order!
"Look, Janelle, I just wanted to say I was sorry for trying to kill you in the past," Leo said. Janelle was surprised he has said that.
"Well, to be fair some of it was not even my fault. Like the night of the play…"
"Your attack orbs ruined it because of your step-father?" Janelle guessed.
"Yeah, I had them locked away in the lab but he shut them down and let them escape. And that time the rogue rocket tried to kill us both was because my siblings took Perry to the lab. She let it go and Adam and Bree had to hurl a car at the rocket. Honestly, Chase should have known better and stopped her from launching it. But I will admit, I'm sorry for freezing you with …."
"Your dad's stupid freeze ray or your brothers unleashing a shark that tried to kill us," Janelle finished. Leo nodded.
"Yeah. I just wanted to say that I'm sorry, but this whole toy thing is new to me."
"I don't understand. Why did you give yourself bionics?"
"Because, my arm was damaged by a ceiling beam and broken beyond repair, so Douglas had to fix it by taking me from the hospital."
"So, you didn't know what was going on?
Leo shook his head. "No. And I'm thankful for it, reverb the training, but I have to keep my second life a secret. It's just not fair because Adam, Bree, and Chase get to show the world who they are but I can't. I mean, I'm still getting used to it but I don't know how long I can keep this a secret."
Janelle didn't know why but she felt sympathy for Leo.
"I'm really sorry, Janelle, for everything," Leo said.
She couldn't help but smile and think of other ways to get Leo's mind off of his stress so he would not let out another laser sphere and it was working. Though he and Janelle did not have the best moments, this was definitely one of them that wasn't destructive and Leo was just fine with that.
Meanwhile, Douglas was actually surprised that his nephew's date was going off without a hitch like it normally had been the past two years they have dated each other. From accounts of Chase's stories, Leo's dates with Janelle usually end up with negative results 70% of the time. Douglas will never forget the time when Chase had frozen him in suspended animation. Apparently, Leo had done the exact same thing to Janelle earlier that day, which required Adam to use his heat vision to melt her out of the Ice cube trap and Janelle didn't speak to him for a month or two. He was surprised to see the relationship they had last that long.
Janelle sometimes smiled when Leo said something funny and he would smile back. However, they would sometimes just sit in silence. Meanwhile, Leo is making jokes that sometimes makes Janelle just stare at him because she did not get the joke Leo was trying to charm her with. Actually, this date had been worrying free and Douglas has nothing to worry about because Leo was not setting off one Laser Sphere. He took that kid for granted. He wasn't mission ready like Adam, Bree or Chase but he could handle one date with his girlfriend. Speaking of which Janelle stopped eating for a second. She got up to go to the bathroom when Douglas took out his phone and called Leo. Back sat his table the teenager answered his own.
"What Douglas?" Leo said.
"Hey, is that why way to talk to your uncle?"
"No, see, this date is going really well. And no offense but whenever I hang out with Janelle around my brothers or Big D, she always calls me bad luck."
"Well, someone sure does sound like Bree. So, are you sure your date with Janelle is going fine?"
Leo rolled his eyes. "Yeah, it's going fine."
"And are you complaining about the red lobster and the flounder? "Douglas agreed.
"Well, yeah, I don't know why I'd complain about the…" Then suddenly Leo stopped. "How do you know I had the lobster and the flounder?"
Douglas suddenly realized his error when he looked back save saw Leo was looking around. "Uh, lucky guess."
Leo looked over to the bar and saw his uncle standing there. Douglas tried to turn away but it was too late. Quickly, the kid got up and marched right up to Douglas.
"Douglas, I know it's you," Leo said as Douglas desperately stayed behind the glasses and the hoodie. He was still on the phone.
"Sorry, Leo, I don't know what you mean."
"Would you get off the phone!" Leo snapped, grabbing Douglas' phone and quickly hanging up.
"Heh, uh, Leo, didn't expect to see you here," Douglas said with a smile but then he saw the kid was imitating a look his mother often gave Douglas whenever he did something wrong.
"You know I was here. You dropped is off. You promised you wouldn't spy on me. What are you doing here?" Leo snapped. Then he took a deep breath. "Look, Douglas, go home."
"Alright, I'm going," Douglas said.
"Thank you!" Leo said, before going back to his seat before Janelle returned from the bathroom. Meanwhile, Douglas just looked back one last time. He was sure Leo was glaring at him and he was right, making gestures with his eyes for Douglas to leave. The man put his hands up in surrender before leaving the restaurant. Meanwhile, Janelle came back from the bathroom, where she saw Leo was looking rather unease. She looked at her boyfriend in concern.
"Leo, is there something wrong?" Janelle asked. Leo shook his head.
"No, just kicking my uncle out of the restaurant. He was watching us the whole time because apparently spying is his thing still." Janelle nodded as Leo smiled.
"So, how about that shrimp?"
