Well, I had plenty of time this weekend to write, thanks to the Superbowl, I am not a fan so I was able to write. In the interest of posting this sooner rather than later there is a bit of perspective changes in here from 3rd to 1st person. Hopefully this is not too jarring. I knew exactly what I wanted to say, but it was a lot and rather complex. For those of you wanting more Finn - hope this doesn't disappoint.
For the record, I don't own Gilmore Girls, but I do love the characters. There is one more perspective to share, but for now, here is what Logan was able to get out ...
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Logan thought carefully about answering this question. He knew that they didn't talk about his mother much, there was still so much anger in him over the wedding. He still struggled with his mixed emotions of sadness and relief when she got COVID and didn't make it, after insisting that it couldn't affect her - such a selfish woman. But her stunt had cemented the bringing of he and his Dad closer together, and that was so important to Logan as his kids ended up having three grandfathers who were engaged, not all at the same level, but they knew that they were loved and accepted. Logan continued to make small talk about the day in a very distracted manner and Rory kept redirecting the conversation back to school with the kids while she watched Logan mulling over this question.
Dinner dragged on and Lia was anxious to hear the story, the longer her Dad procrastinated, with her mother's help, the more she kept thinking that there was something more sinister than she had bargained for.
Alice started to the clear the table when Richard stood up, "Um, where you going young man?" asked Rory.
"Sorry Mom, homework – may I be excused?"
"Yup, me too?" interjected Mia, "homework, of course."
Rory looked at the two and knew they were more likely to be going upstairs to talk with friends than do homework in reality but she waved them away, "Absolutely, and say hi to your friends while you chat with them getting that homework done." They were both excellent students and had figured out how to get their homework done during school hours for the most part.
Logan pushed back in his chair, "So, Lia, want to retire to the living room, I'll pour myself a little scotch and we will see what this old brain can remember? Ace, care to join us?"
Rory was uncertain how this was going to progress, but she reached over to Logan took his hand, gave it a squeeze and chewed on her lip. Logan smiled and knew she was just as nervous to hear him talk about this as he was to bring it up.
Logan, ever the gentleman, rose and pulled out Rory's chair, they held hands as they made their way into the old playroom now the game room, theatre – in other words the room with the comfiest chairs. Logan poured himself a McKellen neat and handed Lia a club soda. Rory indicated she would make her own Martini. This was all done without words and Lia was getting more and more anxious about exactly what was going to issue forth.
"Our wedding, wow, Ace, you know the short answer Lia is that it was a magical ceremony and reception that I wanted to run from. Leading up the wedding was incredible. Colin and Finn were with me every step of the way. Once I told them that your Mom had proposed and was pregnant, they started planning my life. Colin was the one who proposed a double wedding."
"Logan, man, you know Steph has already booked the Dragonfly for our reception – that is the Inn that Lorelai owns in Stars Hallow. It would be perfect, we know all the same people so our side is done and it would just be the ladies who would be adding to the numbers and it outside with 3 tents already, what is another one?" proposed Colin.
Logan was hesitant, "well, first Colin, I am not sure that the men are supposed to plan the wedding."
Finn interjected looking at Colin, "he has you there man," turning to Logan, "but let's face it there has been nothing conventional about the two of you and she proposed, so why don't you do the planning? Take the stress off of her and imagine Report Girl's face when you tell her you picked her Mom's place. She will be ecstatic, actually, I want to be the one to tell her." Finn practically was out the door.
"Woah, woah, there buddy, getting a little ahead of yourself there aren't you?" Logan grabbed his shirt pulling him back into the room.
Finn grinned he was so excited that these two were getting hitched and had decided to do it sooner rather than later. "Ok, so maybe that is your job, or we could tell her together, I'll set you up with a good opening."
Logan grinned at his friends, they had never been happier for him and were trying to make it all perfect. "Colin, you talk to Steph and make sure she is ok with sharing the venue, you know we have an in at the Inn and well, I am sure that the owner will help us out."
Colin quickly called Steph, "hey beautiful, we had a brainstorm, we do a double wedding with Logan and Rory, what do you think?"
He watched Steph's face contort and then break into a smile, "hmm"
"What? Why not?"
"It isn't a no Colin, I like the idea and well, I am cool with the reception location, but I think my parents would revolt on the ceremony part and I just asked Rory to be a bridesmaid now that she and Logan are back together and I said yes to being in her party and well, how do you think you could be marrying me at the same time as ushering? Can we be a bit more practical?"
Finn jumped in, "Perfect solution, you have your ceremony on Saturday and Logan and Rory get married on Friday night, use the same place for the reception neither of you change any plans for the ceremony and I can be best man 2 days in a row."
Steph lit up, "for once Finn I agree with you 100%."
Colin sat up, "um, best man 2 days in a row, but I already asked Logan to be my best man."
Finn looked at Colin very seriously, "Dude, seriously, how can Logan be your best man when you know that he will be very, very busy right up until minutes before the ceremony, I mean he will have been married for less than 24 hours and it is Reporter Girl."
Colin shot him a look and then turned to look at Logan, "it is your call man, I asked you first, are willing to let this one plan both of our bachelor parties and take responsibility for the rings?"
Logan coughed, "you know, Finn plans one helluva party and we can sew the rings into his pockets so they don't get lost."
Finn looked like it was Christmas and he had just taken the mother-load, "hot damn fellas, be ready to party like it's 1999."
While Colin continued to chat with Steph, Finn pulled out his phone and called Rory, "Hello Love,"
Logan grabbed the phone, "Finn, I told you that I will tell her."
Finn stuck his head between the phone and Logan's face, "we are planning your wedding, hold onto your veil love, you are going to be blown away."
-Lia was entranced with her Dad's telling of the pre-wedding story, she had no idea how many people had been rooting for them. She also watched her mother's face as it was glowing at the memory of Finn telling her about the wedding plans. -
Finn continued, "so, it is going to be a double reception with Steph and Colin." Logan tried to move Finn over, but there was no interfering with a happy Aussie so he made hand gestures of I give up and then we can cancel this or change it, "you guys will be married on Friday night, I'll be best man, then Colin and Steph on Saturday, and again, I will be the Best Man; of course, you will both be in the other person's wedding, but the important part is that I will be the Best Man times 2. Isn't that the best plan ever?"
Rory grinned at Finn's enthusiasm and Logan's gesticulating. "You know what Finn, given that I know that this reception is planned for a very nice location I think I can get on board. Now, you being the Best Man times two, does that mean you think you are giving two bachelor parties or are you planning one big blow out?"
Finn looked thoughtfully, "you know, I think I will need to consult with the two maids of honor to see what will work best, I mean I have to out-do them, but not make it so they aren't smiling because an unhappy Maid of Honor is not one that will hook up with the Best Man."
Rory about lost it and Steph stopped talking to Colin to eavesdrop on the conversation happening on the other end. "Finn," said Rory, "you do know that my Maid of Honor is actually a Matron of Honor?"
"So, once she sees this? Wait Matron? Your Mom?"
Everyone started laughing, "no you goof, my friend Lane, she has twin boys, so I think she is not going to be seeing too much of you."
Finn looked very disappointed. Steph interjected, "well, you might have more luck with my Maid of Honor, but I thought you would be more interested in Rosemary."
Finn brightened up at the mention of Rosemary, "seriously, I haven't seen her since graduation, oh, that could be fun."
Colin started to say something, but he noticed that Steph was texting him 'Rosemary is recently divorced, I don't think a hook-up would be bad for her.' Colin stopped short and just patted Finn on the shoulder. "And I hear that Paris is getting a divorce and she is in Rory's bridal party, so you know buddy – that could be two very interesting nights."
That brought another roar of laughter as the group pictured Finn being bossed around by Paris and saw his face blanch with the thought of her.
"Seriously, love, you are still friends with her?"
"Absolutely Finn, absolutely. Her kids are really kinda cute and well behaved despite her being their mother."
That was it for Finn he was pouting, "I am a confirmed bachelor."
- Logan took a breath and smiled recalling the memories of the planning. "So, Lia, our wedding was being planned by the men. Honor was in shock when I told her, but when she heard the actual plans she was pleasantly surprised and your Mom here was a bit relieved, she was in charge of getting the dresses for the ladies and herself, her Mom, Grandma, she said she would work with Sookie to make it perfect at the Inn for the reception and your Great Grandma she took on the flowers for the ceremony itself. I couldn't believe how people complained about wedding planning, I thought it was easy – just delegate and your Mom could keep working on her book and growing you. The wedding was officially planned and we had four weeks, the hardest part was going to be getting the invitations out to the guests and having Taylor move the fall festival by a week. The hard part was telling my parents and getting the "essential" Huntzberger family members on board without any extraneous invitations. I was counting on the conversation I had with Honor that four weeks was not enough time for a society wedding."
"Oh, come on Little Brother" said Honor, "you know that Steph and Colin have been planning for more than a year to pull theirs's off and Josh and I were 18 months – the save the date cards my wedding. Let's face it – we had the big society wedding and satisfied Mom and Dad's desire for a show"
"Yeah, but I am the heir and was supposed to be creating a new match between the European and American news outlets." Logan's shoulders were slumping thinking about the conversation he was about to have with his parents and wondering if they would even show up.
"Logan, think of it this way, maybe they will be glad it is small and fast, it might be better to not draw attention to the dissolution of the newspaper empire Dad had planned. I know that he seems relieved now that he knows that Odette wasn't even playing on the same team and didn't really want kids, but was just doing what she was told knowing she could keep her relationship on the side as there was no chance of any illegitimate offspring arising on her part."
Logan nodded, "thanks Sis, really don't know what I would do without you. Um, will you come with me to the lion's den." Honor nodded and grabbed her purse.
"Come on, I'll drive, you fortify." Logan finished his drink and gave his sister a smile.
"Ok, time to knock." Said Honor
Logan looked at her, "you know, now that I am with Rory, I found out the most kids can just walk into their old house even after moving out, why does it feel like we are intruders?"
Honor let out a sigh, "we were born intruders, Mom only needed us to get in the door, she made it clear from the beginning we were not wanted."
Logan squared his shoulders, "yeah, well, our kids know they are wanted and I'm going to tell them every day – this is always your home, you will never knock."
"I'm with you there Little Brother." She replied as she rang the bell.
Every time Logan walked into the house, it felt more and more like a mausoleum, they followed the maid, whom neither knew, to the back patio. "Please let my father know we are here and I need to talk to him too."
"Certainly sir, but I do believe he is already on the patio as he has the camera feeds in the office."
Logan nodded in understanding, took a deep breath and looked at Honor, they both put their best society faces on.
-Rory had been curled up in the corner, but she shifted knowing that this was territory that Logan didn't venture into. She had not heard any of the conversation with Honor leading up to the meeting and only knew that Mitchum had said they would be there. Logan glanced over at his Ace, she had been worth every minute of torture on that patio and she would be the reason that he now could be in the same room with Mitchum without being belittled, he truly owed her everything. –
Logan and Honor approached their parents, giving them air kisses, "Mom, Dad"
"Oh, Logan, Honor, to what do we owe the pleasure of both of you this afternoon?" Shira's inquiry was laced with something that felt evil in Logan's bones.
"Logan, Honor, what may I get you to drink?" Mitchum ever on ready to set his son straight was already pouring the McKellen, it was ironic that both men drank the same scotch in the same manner; sometimes Mitchum thought there was hope on the horizon. He was brought out of his musings with the sound of Logan's voice saying something about a wedding. "Excuse me, please repeat that last sentence."
Shira was looking for an escape route and realized her strategic error in being on the patio, her smoking spot was no longer available. "I'll take one of those Mitchum, darling." She said walking over to Mitchum and grabbing the drink cart in a rather dramatic fashion.
Logan watched all of these theatrics from his mother with a wry smirk, "I said that you are cordially invited to my wedding to Rory Gilmore in 4 weeks Friday, October 14th. I will of course get you an evite out as soon as possible, but I thought you might want to know from me directly. You already know,"
Mitchum interrupted Logan immediately, "of course, we will be thrilled to be there for you and Rory, just tell us the time and location and we will be there in our finest."
Logan, was annoyed his father had cut him off, "Dad, you didn't let me finish."
"Why Logan there is nothing else to say, you are marrying the woman you love. It seems only appropriate that we shift gears given what we have learned about Odette and now that you and Rory have reconnected and it is clear that she is more than a suitable match given the Gilmore and Hayden name, there is nothing more to discuss. Of course, there will be the prenup, but I am assuming that her father will be drawing that up given his position and the messy situation that happened with the divorce he went through with her mother, just have it sent to our lawyers to review."
Logan tried one more time to continue with his original sentence, "and with the" Mitchum once again cut him off, "Logan, I think we need to talk in my office, why don't we let the women discuss the impending nuptials and do the planning."
Logan actually laughed out loud, "Actually Dad, the guys are planning it, Rory is"
Mitchum once again cut him off.
"Logan, my office, now." That was the voice that Logan dreaded but his Dad had said they would be there and he was cutting him off at the oddest times, "actually, Honor, will you please join us for a minute, excuse us Shira, I am sure you could use a minute to digest the information and sort out the appropriate family close family members guest list for Logan so he can do the invite,"
Honor interrupted, "evite"
"yes, evite – whatever. Thank you, Shira, for taking care of this."
Mitchum gestured to his two children to go inside without another word and when Dad spoke like that somehow Logan and Honor followed like they were still 6 years old.
"Ok, Logan, Honor, I suppose I need to come clean, so, your mother doesn't know that Rory is pregnant, I didn't tell her." He put his hand up to stop Logan from interrupting him, "I am aware that Rory had proposed, yes, you told me I know and it has been a while, but there was never a great time to tell your mother without listening to her rant. Your Grandfather knows and had a talk with Emily and Francine, they made some sort of agreement about inheritances and that I have as of yet to be fully briefed on and he has removed his objections to the match. Your mother, well, she is greedy and" Mitchum was looking resigned and a bit nervous, "well, son, there is something I need to tell you and, Honor, you should know too." He ran his fingers through his hair and Honor realized that was another habit that Logan had gotten from her Dad when he was uneasy. "So, the prenup I had your mother sign, remember she didn't come from a family of standing and she was pregnant with Honor." Logan was shocked that this was all coming out, I mean they all knew – they visited her parents, his grandparents once a year and he knew that his father had paid for their house so at least they were living in a real house and he gave them a yearly stipend to keep up appearances, but this was the first time he was hearing the truth. "Like I was saying, well, they didn't have a lawyer and your Grandfather was angry with me, but I thought I was in love – I was rebelling against the dynastic plan and the girl who had been picked out for me, and then years later your Grandfather told me that they had found out that she had a baby out of wedlock and well, she didn't know that the families had talked and she just took off and had disappeared, so he reluctantly agreed to let me marry Shira because at least there would be an heir, but he had her sign a prenup; I was angry, the girl I was marrying was not a gold digger, but he was right and I was wrong … ah, geez, this is harder than I thought. Ok, bottom line, when you are both married you get the bulk of the family fortune turned over to you, and your mother knows that, what she doesn't know is that if anything happens to me, well, Logan, you control her allowance, she inherits nothing. Right now, she thinks she gets the houses and keeps control over the money that doesn't transfer to you both, but she doesn't. She is a gold digger, a semi-successful gold digger at that. Look Logan, I know that Odette came with her own fortune and now Rory will too, and that neither of them were interested in you for the money. Odette, ironically, was interested in you at all and well, we know Rory, she has no need for your money and she doesn't even want the connections for the journalism. We would have hired her, but she always avoided any publication owned by HPG and that hurt her. She never figured out that it isn't what you know but who you know. I hope son, that you help her with whatever endeavors she undertakes, she is a good writer, not the best journalist, she doesn't go after that elusive story, but damn can she write." Mitchum sat down at his desk.
Logan and Honor both sat down, there was a lot to take in and Logan was feeling overwhelmed and yet oddly ok.
"So, let me get this straight, when I get married, Honor and I take control of more than ½ of the family fortune so, basically a quarter each? If something happens to you Mom gets whatever I deem is appropriate for her? And Rory has been running up against roadblocks in her career because people questioned why she didn't take advantage of her connections with HPG?"
Logan, you make that last one sound like I blackballed her, and I didn't son, I really didn't, but her resume listed the internship and people thought it was strange that she didn't get a job with HPG, places would call me and I would tell them she was a good writer, I wasn't her official reference, but again, it is who you know. I was asked often, why didn't you hire her Mitchum? I told them she never applied. I was honest. I never said anything else, I promise Logan, I didn't stop her from getting hired, I actually supported her, put in a good word for that first job working on the Obama campaign, but, well, you need to ask her."
Logan sat back again and he thought about how many times Rory had avoided anything with HPG, he had offered to get her a job, but she said no. He felt badly, it was one thing to do it on your own in school, but he knew better, in the shrining world of journalism it was all about the connections. Well, now she was writing her book and he was going to make sure she got the best damn publisher, even if he had to start a publishing house to make it happen. "Dad, I know you didn't blackball her, I would have heart about it, as you said the journalism world is small. Plus, she had some great articles, but they were never the hard-hitting investigative journalism she had always thought about. She is writing a book now Dad, and I think she has finally found her calling. I am going to support her 100% through this and hook her up with the best publisher. Ok, so, thanks for the honesty.
"Oh, and, Logan you are the heir to HPG, you get two-thirds and Honor you get one-third. Before you jump on me, this was written by my father and since he will be alive when you get married, unless something goes wrong in the next four weeks, then you can expect a call from the lawyers when you get back from your honeymoon. Logan, technically, I don't own any of this, your Grandfather does. I just manage it."
Logan looked at Honor, both were shocked to learn that their Grandfather didn't trust their Dad with the fortune and it was jumping the generation.
- Logan looked at Rory as he was telling this story, "Ace, I hope you aren't mad at me – I didn't know how to tell you. I did ask about life after the Obama trail, but you just said you didn't find the right fit and I dropped it."
Rory sighed, "Logan, it doesn't matter now. You were probably smart not to tell me then, but you did exactly what I needed, you supported me every step of the way into my book writing venture and I couldn't be happier. It allowed me to be at home with the children, it kept me busy during COVID and I truly found my calling. Plus, I still held strong and didn't let HPG publish me, but I do know that you made phone calls on my behalf – thank you!" She put her legs up on the sofa and her feet landed in his lap.
"Dad, this is quite a story, and I can see the tie in to the wedding day, but.."
Logan cut off Lia, "sometimes the history is more important than the event." And with that Logan looked lovingly at Rory and started back in again. -
"So, Logan, are you mad at me?" asked Mitchum. He realized that at that moment, telling Logan the dynamics had shifted. They were both men who had a responsibility and in the long run Logan had chosen far more wisely. He continued, "you know son, I am glad Rory said no, now wait, hear me out, if you had married then I think you two would have made it work, but we would still be at odds, but now, now I know you are really in love, there is no chance she is after you for the wrong reasons and I trust you to make good choices son, I really do."
Honor had tears welling up in her eyes, she looked at Logan who was still in shock, "wow Dad, thanks for that and when we should we tell Mom about her grandbaby?"
"After the wedding." Said Mitchum and Logan in unison.
The three of them exited the office in search of Shira. "Mom, do you have that list for Logan?" asked Honor.
"I have not finished it yet; I will email it to you tomorrow." Replied Shira. "Mitchum, why are they asking for the list, I thought you were going to talk to sense into him, them, this wedding can't happen. He is supposed to marry Odette." Shira started in.
Mitchum just held up his hand, "Shira, stop now! We are not discussing this any further. Logan is marrying Rory. Dad and I are behind this union and you have no say. Your only job is to get him the list of family names who must be invited as he said it is a family and close friend's only wedding. None of our friends are invited, only theirs."
Logan just stood there, he hadn't even said that and here was his father making it clear about the status of the wedding. He looked at Honor with eyebrows knitted, "I feel like Col Gaines in the Parallel"
Honor nods, "hmm, do you really want to be Maj Gaines again?"
"Thanks Dad." Says Logan and he contemplates for just one moment giving the man in front of him a hug, it was the first time he felt like his father was on his side, but Mitchum turned around and walked back to his office.
- Rory heard the front door opening, hmm, only one person walks in the front door, "Hi Finn!" Lia jumped off the sofa and ran into the foyer leaping into her Uncle Finn's arms, "Uncle Finn! What are you doing here?"
Well, aren't I allowed to come visit my favorite family? I am your God Father, self-appointed, after all and I am here to make sure that you hear all about that day."
"Huh? Uncle Finn, what are you talking about?"
Logan stood up and walked out to the foyer, "Hey Finn, how are you? Ace, seriously, you thought I wouldn't tell her the story? How long ago did she text you?"
Finn grinned and wiggled his eyebrows, "Love? She told me to give you at least 45 minutes, she texted at dinner. I was busy, so it took me a bit longer. So, where are we? Did you tell her about the fact that I planned your wedding? With a little help from your Aunt Steph of course, but I did most of the work. And then the evil witch, god rest her soul,"
Logan interrupted Finn, "yes she knows you helped to plan the wedding."
"I got the flowers." Finn was so proud of himself. The three of them walked back into the room to find Rory sitting on the couch smiling as she listened to their banter. She patted the sofa and invited everyone to sit down.
Rory figured it was a good idea to let Finn know where they were in the story - "Finn, Logan just told us the story of what happened the month before the wedding when he told his parents."
Finn nodded, "oh, so you are really doing a tell all. This should be good." He grabbed a pillow and accepted the drink that Logan poured for him and settled in, ready to jump in any place where Logan tried to gloss over any details.
Logan, settled back onto the sofa, picking up his refreshed drink and taking Rory's feet into his lap and putting a blanket over them. Lia snuggled up next to her Uncle Finn and knew that the night was going to be a really good one. "Ok, Dad, so you left Grandfather and Grandmother's – he was behind you and she was supposed to email you a list of family." Lia thought about it for a moment and realized that she really didn't know many people in her Dad's family outside of her Aunt Honor and Uncle Josh and Sophia and Mason. -
Honor drove Logan back to her place; they were both still in shock from the meeting. "Well, Logan, I think that was the most shocking thing. I can honestly say I was not expecting that response from Dad."
"Yeah, I am not sure what to do with it. I guess for now I need to trust him. Really thought he had told Mom about the baby. Hey, Sis, thanks for driving and coming with me. I think I need to head back to Rory's and tell her that my parents are coming to the wedding and we will have a short list of family to e-vite to the wedding." They hugged and Logan got in his car.
The next couple of weeks were pretty smooth sailing. Mitchum was right, Grandpa Chris did want a prenup and it was very standard. We sent them to the lawyers and all agreed. Then your Mom and I wrote our own little clause at the end, know what it says?"
Lia shook her head no. Her Dad grinned, "it says that if we ever divorce our children get everything and they decide how much of an allowance we are to get each month. We did that because we knew that we would have lost our minds if we ever divorced." Logan grinned at Rory and she nodded in confirmation. Finn looked disappointed, "you mean I am not in charge?"
Lia patted Finn on the shoulder, "don't worry if Mom and Dad divorce, I am moving in with you." Finn seemed satisfied.
"Ok, Logan you can continue and don't tell her about the bachelor party, she isn't old enough." Finn interjected.
Logan nodded in agreement, "Finn, no one is old enough to hear about that party and honestly, I don't remember much".
"huh, oddly, neither do I"
Rory just rolled her eyes, "Logan, lucky for you we had the bachelor and bachelorette parties at the same hotel and the women remained sober enough – one in particular here – to make sure that you didn't actual do anything you would ever actually regret."
"Wait, Ace, are you saying we were just drunk?"
"Yeah, pretty much."
"oh, ok." Logan looked resigned as he realized that his final hurrah was not that much different than most of his college days. "Ok, so, the wedding was planned, the flowers ordered, thank you Finn, the music set up with Hep Alien playing, the evites had gone out and your Grandma was thrilled it was being held at Stars Hallow and at the Dragonfly. It was about 50 people in reality and that included the locals. Your Mom kept writing her book and grinning at me and saying I hope you like it as much as I do. I wasn't sure if she was referring to the dress or the book, but I was hoping it was the dress.
I met with Sookie about the food about a week before, Lorelai, Grandma, had told me she would let Sookie know, but I wanted to tell her that we had hired an extra set of servers so her people would not be overworked and just thank her for all her hard work I knew she was putting in, plus I needed to pay her. She kept insisting that the food was her gift to us, so we finally agreed that I would pay for the food and the servers, but graciously accepted her cooking as her gift. I didn't know at the time that my mother had gotten to her.
After all of the planning and work, Friday, Oct. 14 arrived and I was beyond excited. Luke had agreed to let your Mom get dressed at his place and the boys and I were told that morning that we were changing at Grandma's. Grandma explained that Michel had called her to say that he had overbooked the Inn and that our room would not be ready until after the ceremony, and since it was his mistake, he would arrange to move our luggage from her place to the Inn. I didn't care, I just wanted to get married.
Uncles Finn, Josh, Colin, and Robert were all there, we changed into our tuxes and walked to the gazebo. I saw the carriage parked around the corner. I kept repeating the vows in my head. We had found these vows that are said by Quakers and really liked them. Originally your Mom wanted us to write our own, but I knew that it would take too long to say everything I wanted to say and after a long conversation we realized that adapting these vows would work and they were easier to memorize anyway. The day was perfect, the ceremony was planned for 3pm and the afternoon was still a little warm. Uncle Finn and I hung back at Miss. Patty's dance studio while the others were ushers seating the guests. I saw Honor heading into Luke's late and she looked upset. Finn went to grab his phone and call her. I said, 'Finn, I don't want to know. Something tells me it has to do with my mother.' I gestured toward the guests and we noticed that she and Grandfather were not there yet.
Finally, we saw my parents show up, and oddly, they were in separate cars. "Hey, look, Logan – they arrived, but not together. Is there something I should know?"
"Finn, I know everything you do. I am not going to pay them any mind. I am marrying my Ace today and that is all that matters."
Finn nodded, "yeah, you got your Reporter Girl. It is all good."
We walked out toward the gazebo and lined up. The string quartet started to play and I could see the bridesmaids walking toward us. I don't know how they did it but they all looked beautiful in these gowns of blue that matched your Mom's eyes. First in line was Aunt Honor and she looked at me, then I saw her look at my parents, she was glaring at them. My father looked back with a look of confusion as to why she was so angry, but my mother just straightened her back and smirked. Honor straightened her shoulders and gave me a look of 'I am so, so sorry.' Honor was up on the gazebo and the rest of the bridesmaids were ascending the step, but just as I started to respond I saw your Mom, and that was it – I was caught in those blue eyes. I was no longer standing on the ground, but floating in space. I had finally come home and my heart was complete. I whispered, 'Ace, my Ace.' To her and just wanted to take her hand. I listened for the minister to ask the question of who gave this woman and then your Grandma and Grandpa said 'We do' and finally I had her hand in mine. I had my north star and knew exactly where we were going to go and I heard your Mom say those vows. I think the minister expected me to go first, but it felt right that she said them first. I watched her lips, her eyes and then she broke into a smile of radiating so much joy and I knew then it was my turn, "Ace, in the presence of God and these our friends, I take you Lorelai Leigh Gilmore Rory to be my wife, promising with divine assistance to be unto you a loving and faithful husband. I also promise to share my feelings, my thoughts, my pain, my joys and my love from this day forward for as long as we both shall live."
The minister then cleared his throat, 'um, you need to exchange rings, Rory, Logan, you need to take the rings and put them on each other's fingers.' I felt Finn poking me in the back and suddenly I realized that I had been so lost in her eyes that we hadn't put the rings on each other's fingers. "Ace, I promise I won't let go again if you just let me put this ring on your finger."
She finally let go of my hand and Finn slipped the ring into my hand and I put it on her finger – then Lane handed the ring to your Mom and she put it on my finger and started chewing on her lip. I so desperately wanted to kiss those lips and finally the minister nodded his head, 'with the power vested in me, I now pronounced you husband and wife. Logan, you may kiss your bride."
We walked down the steps and I saw the carriage pulling around. Then I saw Honor talking to Colin and the photographer and Colin walked over to me and told me we should take the photos at the gazebo. I went to object, but suddenly the guys picked me and held me over their heads – we started laughing and the photographer started taking pictures and that was it – we spent the next hour enjoying ourselves. I was kind of glad my mother had disappeared, I just assumed she had gone off to smoke. My Dad and Grandfather were there with me and we had started to bond. My Dad said 'we can take a photo at the Inn, Son.'"
Finn interrupted, "It was my idea to pick him up, Love."
"I know Finn, every good idea is your idea." Retorted Rory.
"ok, that is enough stroking Finn's ego there, Ace." Interjected Logan, "now, can I finish?" Rory swept her arm as if to say, go ahead, you have center stage.
After the photos we took the carriage to the Dragonfly, your Mom and I were just enjoying each other and looking forward to eating Sookie's cooking. Then I noticed the cars and I started to recognize the driver's I had seen so many of them before at functions, HPG functions. It started to dawn on me why my mother was late, why Honor was so upset, why it had taken more than a day for my mother to put together the list of family, she had been busy inviting all of my Dad's associates. I felt so betrayed and I was sure your Mom was going to divorce me before we spent 24 hours married. 'I had no idea Ace; I promise I didn't know.' It felt like my heart was going to burst out of my chest it was beating so hard. I heard her talking about a mix-up. Oh, god, she thought this was a mix up with Colin and Steph's wedding. 'This is not a mix-up with Colin and Steph's wedding, these are my father's associates – this is the publishing and newspaper world that is here.' I was tasting bile and felt like I was going to throw up. I saw my Dad approaching the carriage, he looked like I felt. His hands were raised in the air, he had the most helpless look on his face and yet there was so much anger in his eyes, but I knew that the anger was not for me, 'didn't do this Logan, honest Rory, I wouldn't do this to you.' I saw the realization dawn on your Mom's face and my stomach dropped even further it was no longer in my body. How could she do this? I scanned the crowd for friendly faces, anyone, anywhere to help me know what to do. It was Emily who kept her wits about her, she was so calm and loving. She was not going to let my mother ruin my day.
Through the anger and hurt I heard her kind voice, "Logan, bring your bride to the party, your guests, your real guests are waiting and they need to know what to do."
It hit me that all of the people we had invited were also feeling betrayed. I heard Finn talking to Rory and I knew I needed to move, so I climbed down and went to your Mom's side. Colin and I helper her alight. Then I made eye contact with Lane and she smiled at me and picked up her drum sticks and I gave her the thumbs up sign. She and Gil kicked my Mom's band off the stage and took her place, Gil grabbed the microphone from their singer and handed it to Lane, "Ladies and Gentleman, Rock 'n' Roll lovers of all ages, I give you the most Rock 'n' Roll couple Mr. and Mrs. Logan and Rory Gilmore-Huntzberger." I heard cheering and carried your Mom to the dance floor and after the most rock'n'roll introduction they started playing Moon River. I grinned at Lane never more grateful for our friends than at that moment. I remember taking your Mom in my arms, "It is just you and me Ace, that is it – just you and me." We kissed and I heard her say, "Live in the moment, Huntzberger."
"Ok, my turn" interjected Finn.
