Dear Mort,
Spring has come and gone and summer is upon us. The concert was well attended and my sister was pleased. She's always busy in town. Now, she's getting involved with helping women get the right to vote. She helped organize the Territorial Women's Suffrage Society. Do you remember when my friend Lavinia came to Laramie and Slim got so mad at one of her helpers? It's funny what you remember.
Mike has written that he's decided to get a job helping a farmer near the school. It will help with some of his school supplies.
I finally heard from Slim. He's doing well. He likes Caleb and they get along alright. Caleb is a lot younger but they still have things in common.
He wrote me about Marcie. He's courting her now and is planning on taking her to a dance - or maybe by the time you get this letter, he already went to it! He still misses Jess every day.
Andy and Mike are now writing more regularly. I wanted so much to go home this summer but Violet got sick and I couldn't leave her.
Is Laramie having a big 4th of July celebration? Denver's mayor is going to get dressed up like President Washington and ride around town and then the town council is going to read the Declaration of independence. There's talk of fireworks. Of course, Violet is planning a town picnic.
Have a peaceful summer, Mort
Daisy
Daisy POV:
I miss my family. I miss the picnics, making lemonade. I don't miss the sweat-soaked sheets or dusty floors or the endless fish smells from the yard but I miss the antics of two young men and the way they cared for our land, Mike and me. I want to go home. I know it'll only be Slim there and from what I read between the lines of his letter, he's spending more time with Marcie then at the ranch. One day soon, I might be planning a wedding!
