Chapter 11
John took Marjorie by the hands. "Are you okay?" Marjorie nodded and the two of them walked off through the crowd, which included original Nita, towards the cafeteria, hand in hand. Nita number two went over to Susan once her parents and original Nita had left.
"Ok everybody, let's back up now, huh, let's back up, just everybody back up. Give her a little bit of room, ok, a little bit of air. It's ok. I know CPR, I know CPR."
Susan was beginning to wake up. "Hey…"
"What's CPR?" asked someone in the crowd.
Susan work up and looked at Nita. "You!"
Nita punched her again – she fell unconscious. Nita took the Almanac out of Susan's handbag. "She's fine." She ran off.
"Hey, did you just take her purse?" someone called after her. "She just took that girl's purse!"
Nita called the Doctor. "Doctor, success, I got it!"
"Thank goodness. Great Nita, I'll meet you on the roof of the cafeteria."
"On the roof, gotcha."
Nita turned the corner to meet up with Susan's gang. "Hey, it's her! And she's in disguise!"
"Girls, what's that?" She pointed in the other direction, they turned and looked, and she pushed past them like she did with the gang in 2018. Nita ran off. The gang got up.
"Come on, let's get her!'
Meanwhile the TARDIS dematerialised from where it had been hiding. As it did so, an alert started flashing on the console.
"Damn! What's that?" wondered the Doctor.
Nita walked over to the dance floor. Barry Gibb was on the stage singing. Original Nita is also there, playing the guitar, and Marjorie and John are there dancing. Marjorie waved to Original Nita up on the stage. Original Nita waved back.
"The way I love you," sang Barry.
Marjorie and John kissed. Susan's gang entered the dance and Nita hid underneath a table.
"Let's do another one," suggested Barry.
"Where'd she go? She just came in here?" wondered the gang.
"Something that really stirs the possum," said the Nita on the stage.
The gang spotted Original Nita on the stage about to play Shadow Dancing.
"Look. How'd she get up on stage?"
"I dunno, but when she gets down we're gonna have a blue with her."
"How the hell'd she change her clothes so fast?"
"an oldie where I come from. Alright guys, watch me for the changes, and um, try and keep up, okay?"
Susan's gang went up to the side of the stage as Original Nita started to play. They're there waiting for her to finish the song before they start a blue with her. Only Nita number two saw them. She got out her mobile phone and called the Doctor.
"Yes Nita?"
"Listen Doctor, Susan's gang chased me to the dance floor and they're gonna jump…me!"
"Then get out of there!"
"No Doctor, not me, the other me, the one that's up on stage playing Shadow Dancing!"
"Oh my giddy aunt! Your other self will miss her rendezvous with other me, you won't get back to the future and we'll have a major paradox!"
"Wait, wait, a paradox? You mean one of those things that could destroy the universe?"
"Precisely! Nita, you have to stop those girls at all cost but without being seen by your other self – or your parents!"
"Gotcha!"
Out in the parking lot, Susan woke up again. "Where is she?"
"Who?" asked a bystander.
"Doctor Marten."
"Who?"
"The girl with the sunglasses. Where is she?"
"Oh." He pointed towards the dance floor. "She went that way." Susan ran to the dance floor. "I think she took your purse!" He turned to the crowd. "I think she took her purse."
At the dance floor, Original Nita was singing "Shadow dancing, all this and nothing more."
Nita number two hummed along for a few moments, realizing that she wasn't half bad, then saw Susan's gang again. They were on the side platform, with weapons, waiting for Original Nita to finish so that they could beat her up. Nita number two spotted sandbags above Susan's gang. She climbed the rigging above the stage and slowly crawled across it. She looked down and saw her other self playing her guitar solo. Nobody saw Nita number two climbing along the top. She saw Barry making his phone call to his brother Andy. She tried to untie the rope holding up the sandbags.
"Come on…"
She managed it, and the sandbags fell on Susan's gang. They fell unconscious. Original Nita went a bit overboard, and by the time she'd finished playing some rock music, everyone on the dancefloor was disco dancing even though they'd never heard of disco yet. Nita number two climbed down. Original Nita looked at the crowd. The policeman was covering his ears.
Nita number two left the stage and got out the mobile phone.
"Hey Doctor, success, everything's cool."
"Great, I'll be materialising on the cafeteria roof in a minute."
"I'll be there."
Nita number two walked into the café. Original Nia was about to enter, but saw John before she got to the door.
"John!"
"Nita, that was very interesting music." Nita number two was watching this through the door. "I hope you don't mind but I've asked Marjorie if I could take her home."
"Great, good, good, John, I had a feeling about you two."
"I have a feeling too."
Inside the café, Susan appeared at the door next to Nita number two, who was still watching them.
"Hey boofhead! You think that stupid disguise will get by me? Let's have it out. You and me, right now."
"No thanks." She started to walk away.
"What's the matter, where are you going?"
Outside, Original Nita headed for the door, and then turned back to the couple.
"Oh, one other thing…"
"Are you, stupid?" mocked Susan inside. "That's it, isn't it? Too stupid to know how to fight."
Nita turned around.
"Nobody calls me stu…"
Original Nita entered the café, slamming the door on her future self's head and causing Nita number two to fall over. Neither Nita sees the other, and Susan luckily didn't see that there was two of them. Susan turned to Nita number two. She can see that Nita has the almanac.
"What the hell?" She took the almanac. "You steal my stuff?" She kicked Nita in the stomach.
"Whoa!"
"And this one's for my car!"
She kicked Nita again. Nita watched Susan get into her car. Nita got up, minus her sunglasses, she just left them there, and tried to follow Susan, but Susan drove off.
