Letting Go
Chapter 12 -The Search For Kate
Jordan Shaw contacted Coleen Sorenson on the latest development in the search for Will.
"Is there any secret hiding places on your farm where Will might hide?", she had asked.
"There is just one place I know. Back in the late 50's and early 60's at the height of the Cold War my grandparents had a nuclear bomb shelter built on the farm. It however was abandoned in the 80's and I do not even know it's location", she had told Jordan.
"Do you think Will knew about it?"
"Maybe, he was close to my dad and they talked often, dad may have told him."
Jordan passes that info to the on site personnel and then directs her team to find any information on the matter. But having been built decades ago, info on the shelter may have been lost. Still they had to do the search, lives depended on it
In Captivity
Kate Castle awakens to find herself tied hands and feet to a chair. Her hands are bound behind her and her legs are tied to the legs of the chair she is sitting in. As she comes out of her unconscious state, her mind is starting to recall what happened. She was drugged and then abducted to this place, where ever it is. She looks around her surroundings. There is a bed on one side of the room, on the opposite wall to the bed is a small "kitchenette" with stove, refrigerator, sink, and pantry for food storage. Off to one side is an open door and she can see the sink there, so she knows it is a bathroom. Opposite the bathroom wall is a desk area with lap top and other electronic equipment on the desk. In the corner of that same desk wall is a ladder leading up to a hatch. Kate concludes it is the entry and exit point to her room. The overhead hatch tells her she is somewhere underground. Next to the ladder is another door. The door is closed and Kate deduces it leads to yet another room.
Nearly fully awake, she sees Will Sorenson come thru the door by the exit ladder.
"Will, what have you done, what is this all about?"
"Well, welcome back from your sleep."
"Sleep? You did that to me, Will, you drugged me unconscious and brought me here. What are you doing Will?" She knows the answer to that but wants to hear Will tell her.
He enters her personal space and looks her in the eyes. Next thing Kate knows, Will attempts to kiss her on the lips. She turns her head to avoid the kiss. He tries again, and she turns her head a second time in the other direction, avoiding the contact to her lips. When Will tries a third time, she head butts him. Will reels back his hand on his forehead where Kate hit him. She glares at him.
"What was that about?", she asks in anger.
"You know what I am doing Kate, I am taking you back from Writer Monkey."
"Taking me back, I was never yours to take back. I am married now and a mother. You and me are not together. We ended it long ago. You are not entitled to such intimacy. I have a husband who is my one and done."
"No Kate, you were seduced by writer monkey. You were tricked into marrying him after we divorced. He was the reason for the divorce. He fooled you into believing he loved you."
"We were never married Will. That is a delusion you are having caused by a PTSD incident you experienced on our current case."
"Is that a ploy you thought up with the FBI to fool me into releasing you? Are you trying to confuse me and distract me from my efforts of taking you back. It will not work, I am on to this mind game of yours, Kate."
"It is not a mind game, Will, and you can prove it to yourself if you want the truth."
"Oh and how can I do that?"
"Does that lap top work and can you get internet?"
"Yes, the lap top is connected to a wireless disk antenna I had installed just recently and gives me full internet capability."
"Good, then google yourself Will. Pull up your FBI profile and see what it says about you."
Will begrudgingly goes to the desk and starts up the laptop. After sometime on the laptop, Kate hears Will comment on the result of his web search.
"No, this can't be right, this is a trick you and the FBI set up. You changed my records as an attempt to fool me to release you."
"What did your search turn up Will?"
"It said my marital status is divorced from former spouse Coleen Henderson Sorenson. Coleen and I were never married. We were just close friends. I knew about this place thru her. This is all part of the deception that you and FBI concocted to have me surrender from my attempts to get you back."
"Still unconvinced, google me and Castle and see what the internet says about us?"
"That will prove nothing, the FBI could have planted false information there like they did for my profile. It is an elaborate con to have me surrender to them."
Kate realizes the extent of Will's delusion, he is unwilling to accept what he got from the internet. He dismisses it as a ploy. Then she gets an idea that just might work on Will.
"Okay, if you think the FBI has altered our personal data, then google the NYC newspapers just weeks before our supposed wedding and see if there are any announcements on our wedding. If that does not convince you, go back to the time of our divorce and see if there are any articles on our divorce. If any info comes up showing that we were married and divorced, I will knowingly return to you. We can restart from where we left off."
Kate smartly used the bait of returning to Will on her own accord to have him google the non existent info.
For almost two hours Will is on the laptop, searching for the info that Kate had him looking for.
"No, this can't be, it is a ruse. The FBI got to these newspapers and had them all purge the info you wanted."
"Really Will? On what basis would all the newspapers from NYC purge that information. The FBI is powerful, but not that powerful, that they would have destroyed public information. The truth is we were never married and divorced, it is a delusion you have that was fostered by your PTSD. Still unconvinced? Google Coleen and see what it says"
Upon hearing Kate's declaration, Will googles Coleen. Upon seeing this info, he lets out with a scream and then goes still and just stares at the laptop screen. Kate recognizes it as a PTSD bout.
"Will", she says, "come back to me. Come out of it and talk to me."
After some time when Will does not respond, Kate realizes she may have pushed Will over the top. It appears he has again gone into a comatose state. If he doesn't come out of it and she is still tied to the chair, she may die out of neglect for her body, like eating and drinking. She in earnest tries to free herself from her binds. They are strong, but if she continues to work them, if she can loosen them, maybe she can then get herself free.
She works the bindings for hours, trying to free herself. Finally, she is physically worn from her efforts and falls into a recovery sleep.
FBI Command Center
The search so far on finding the location of the bomb shelter on Coleen's farm has lead tonothing. Still efforts continue despite the numerous dead ends the team has experienced.
"Jordan", says one of her assistants, "the ground penetrating radar is just now being delivered to the farm house along with the tech team that operates it."
"Well, finally some good news. Let me know when it is operational and when they do the radar search. Any info yet on our online location search."
"We found a list of contractors who did bomb shelters around that time when they were a trend and are contacting each to see if they had a job on the farm house. But many are out of business now."
"What about construction permits, or any permits that might have been issued for the shelter, have we gone down that path."
"We just started that search. We are searching what kind of permits may have been issued for bomb shelter construction around the time of the event. When we find what types of permits were needed, then we can go to public records for info from the permits."
"Good, kept on it and let me know what comes of it. We need to move quickly here people", she addresses the team for encouragement.
She continues her talk, " The haste is for fear of Kate's well being if we are delayed. Will is delusional, no telling what he is capable of doing to her. So let's move on this quickly. Fast is not enough."
In The Bomb Shelter
Kate awakens from her recovery sleep to find that Will is still sitting in front of his laptop in a comatose state. She had worked for hours trying to free herself from the ropes that bind her to her chair. She is thirsty and hunger which is a good thing, because if she were full, the need for to use the bathroom might arise. If it does, Kate dreads the outcome. She could be there bathed in her own body wastes . A situation Kate hopes to avoid. Her current condition is deadly, if she is not found in time. She knows she can go without water and food for days, but if it went beyond that, she would just fade away to her death. Again she tries to get Will to come out of his current state but to no avail.
She attempts again to free herself from her bindings.
She is in a life and death situation here.
So in frustration she says a prayer to the universe to help her come thru all of this. She closes her eyes tired again from her efforts to loosen her bindings. She falls asleep from exhaustion and dreams of Rick and her new born daughter. In her dreams she is feeding Lily as Rick watches.
