She was back at the hospital, but not for work like she had hoped. She was back because Owen had called her after she gotten home from the park, wanting her to come in for a meeting. Dressed in her street clothes, she walked the halls of Grey-Sloan watching as everyone bustled around. Her body yearning to be running around with them as she walked off to the elevator.
She stopped in front of his office door, mustering up the courage to knock. Drawing in a breath she reached up, knocking on the wooden door.
"Come in." She heard Owen say. Slowly she walked into the room, her eyes scanning the space as she bit her lip.
"Please have a seat, Meredith." Owen whispered, drawing her out of her thoughts. She pulled the chair back, plopping herself down as her eyes shifted to Owen's. She's searching for any hint of anger, but only finding sadness and disappointment.
"How are you doing?" Owen asked, sighing gently as he came around the desk, taking a seat on the edge of it.
"I'm alright, anxious to get back to work." Meredith said softly.
"I know you are but you understand why I can't allow it." He paused for a moment before sighing. "You could have really hurt someone, Grey." He said sadly.
"I know," Meredith whispered.
There was what seemed like a long pause before Owen spoke again. "PTSD is a real thing, Meredith. After I returned from Iraq, I refused help. I couldn't stand being touched, the nightmares were brutal and then it came to a head when I hurt Cristina and...Meredith, I've never forgiven myself for that. I know if you would hurt someone or if you had hurt someone that day, you would never forgive yourself."
He was right, she knew it. She would have never forgiven herself. "So what happens now?" Meredith asked weakly.
"I've set up a couple sessions with the hospital counselor that are mandatory before your return."
Meredith nodded her head slowly. She hadn't been back to therapy since she had walked out during a session a few years ago. She was lost in her thoughts, not even noticing that Owen had written something down, ripping the piece of paper from the notepad.
"Here, this is my phone number. Please call me anytime." Owen whispered softly. "You're not alone, Meredith. We're all here for you in any way you need."
She was walking out of the office, staring at the piece of paper in her hand containing the dates of her therapy sessions. The meeting had gone as well as she could expect and she was already looking forward to when she would be cleared by the therapist.
Walking through the ER, she hoped to be able to sneak out without anyone seeing her. "Auntie Mer!" She heard someone yell. Before she could see what was happening, a pair of small arms wrapped around her.
"Sofia?" Meredith questioned. She crouched down, looking into Sofia's watering eyes. "What's wrong?" She asked.
"Mommy's hurt!" Sofia cried.
"What do you mean shes hurt?" Meredith asked. Sofia kept crying, gasping for air in between sobs. Meredith knew she wasn't going to get anything out of her so she took her hand gently and started to head back to the ER.
"Drunk driver, hit the driver's side. She's one of own," she heard Owen say.
Meredith followed Owen to a trauma room, gasping when he pulled the curtain around.
"Callie, oh my God," Meredith whispered as she turned Sofia's face into her leg, trying to shield her from seeing her mom in such a state.
"Okay, let's go wait in the waiting room." Meredith suggested, pulling Sofia with her as they walked away. Meredith got settled in a chair as Sofia climbed into her lap.
She wouldn't say this out loud to Sofia but she was scared. This is how she lost Derek. This is how her world had ended and she couldn't fathom the thought of Sofia losing her mother.
An hour later, Sofia was asleep with her head placed on Meredith's lap as the blonde brushed her fingers through the little girl's hair. Her stomach was in knots the longer they waited.
"Mer?" Alex called out as he was leaving for the day. He was surprised to see her.
"Hey, Sofia, I'm gonna be right over there with Alex, okay?" Meredith pointed to Alex and Sofia nodded. She walked over to Alex and spoke softly so Sofia wouldn't hear her. "Callie's been in a car accident."
"Is she alright?" Alex asked, worried.
"We don't know, Sofia was hysterical. I just saw them earlier, everything was fine." Meredith rambled.
"It's Callie, she'll be alright," Alex said. He watched Meredith's demeanor, knowing there was more. "What is it, Mer?"
That's when her resolve broke, tears started streaming down her cheeks as Alex pulled her against his chest.
"I can't help but think, this is how I lost Derek, Alex. If Callie dies, Sofia will have lost all of her parents. She's so young." Meredith said softly, shaking her head as tears streamed down her cheeks.
"No one said she was dying or has died, Mer. She has survived car accidents before. She's strong and she will survive." Alex said firmly.
Meredith nodded her head, reaching up to wipe her eyes. "Yeah, we just have to hope and pray." She paused for a moment. "I should try and get ahold of Arizona."
"Do you need her number?" Alex asked.
"Yeah, you have it?"
"We do talk from time to time. Here, use my phone." Alex said, fishing his phone out of his pocket.
Placing the phone against her ear, she turned to Alex. "Can you watch her for a few minutes?"
Alex nodded his head as she walked away. A few minutes later, Meredith came back clearly frustrated as she handed Alex back his phone.
"So, she answered but basically said this is my issue and she doesn't want any part of it." Meredith said bitterly.
"What are you going to do?" Alex asked.
"I guess Sofia is staying with me for now," Meredith sighed, looking over at the little girl. She just hoped Callie would be okay.
