Chapter 11
The two weeks sped by, and Mike and Michelle's wedding day dawned. It was a simple wedding and they had only invited a few people. It was absolutely perfect. The reporter had published the article about Mike, and there had been an interview done by Mike.
They were all eating and visiting after the wedding when a waiter got Tom and whispered in his ear. Tom immediately stood up and left. Mike noticed but was talking to Wolf Taylor. Tom rushed out to the lobby area of the reception hall, and was encountered by Kaitlyn Slattery.
"Kaitlyn?" Tom asked.
"I…heard my dad might be here." Kaitlyn said. Her hair was wild, clothes were torn and tattered, and she looked dirty.
"He is. Where have you been?" Tom asked. He didn't want to grill the girl, but something was off.
"Homeless. I read the report. I didn't realize I was so close, but he probably doesn't want me." Kaitlyn said. She was looking down at her feet.
"I'm certain he will. Can you stay here? I'll get him." Tom asked and Kaitlyn nodded. He found her a seat and rubbed her shoulder. She seemed so frail. He walked into the reception hall, looking for Mike. When he didn't see him, he looked for Michelle. She was talking to Kara Greene when Tom approached and interrupted. "I hate to intrude, but where's Mike?" Tom asked.
"He went to pay the caterer. Is everything alright?" Michelle asked.
"What you and I talked about, Kaitlyn? She's in the lobby. I'm afraid she might bolt." Tom said and both women both stood up.
"I'll find Mike." Kara said.
"I'll go with you." Michelle answered. She followed Tom out and as soon as she saw Kaitlyn, she gave her a warm smile. "Hi, Kaitlyn; I'm Michelle. Your dad will be here in just a minute. Would you like something to eat? You can come in." Michelle offered.
"I'm not dressed right." Kaitlyn said.
"Oh, that doesn't matter but if you'd rather, we can stay here." Michelle answered. Kaitlyn nodded.
"I'll hurry Mike." Tom told them. Michelle nodded and sat down next to Kaitlyn on the couch. She wrapped an arm around her, not caring about how Kaitlyn looked or smelled.
"Did Tom tell you that your dad and I just got married?" Michelle asked.
"No, but I kind of figured it out. I should have waited." Kaitlyn said.
"No. I'm glad you're here now. Your dad will be thrilled. He has missed you so much." Michelle told her.
"But…I told him that I hated him. There is no way he'd want me back now." Kaitlyn said.
"Why do you think that? He told me about the argument." Michelle asked.
"I told him I hated him and I have stayed gone for so long." Kaitlyn answered.
"So, not that I'm not glad you're here now; but why come back now?" Michelle asked.
"In the article; it said he had cancer. I guess I thought he might be dying, and I…wanted to see him again." Kaitlyn admitted.
"He does have cancer, but he is doing better. They think he might be going into remission." Michelle answered.
"I'm glad." Kaitlyn said. Just then Mike burst into the lobby.
"Katie?" Mike said. He strode to them and Kaitlyn stood up. Michelle could tell she was nervous, but Mike pulled Kaitlyn into a hug. Both Michelle and Tom backed away, and back into the reception hall; leaving Mike to tend to Kaitllyn.
