The next morning Cailin and Maura were at the hospital bright and early, before anyone else in the house was even awake. While Hope helped Cailin get registered, Maura made her way up to the lab, where she decided to be tested to see if she was a suitable match for Cailin's stem cell transplant.

She couldn't help but laugh as the nurse swabbed her cheek with a Q tip. "I do this every day to collect DNA for crime scenes. It's a little different to be sitting on the other side, for an entirely different reason. In this case, it can actually save my sister's life."

The nurse smiles at Maura before placing the Q tip in a sealed plastic bag with Maura's name on it. "I noticed your paperwork said you are a half sibling. I guess since you are a doctor I don't have to tell you that significantly increases your chance of being a match for your sister."

Maura smiles. "That's what I am hoping."

"Well, you are free to go. We should have some results for you in a couple of days," the nurse says.

"Thank you," Maura says as she exits, making her way down to the hospital cafeteria. She gets breakfast and coffee for herself, her mom, and sister, before making her way back upstairs, attempting to juggle it all along the way. By this time, Cailin had been assigned a room and Maura stood at the door, both hands full. "Hey mom, let me in," the blonde called out to the woman inside.

Hope quickly got up and made her way over to the door, letting Maura inside.

"Where did you run off to?" Hope looks at Maura questiongly as she takes the bags from her hands, leaving her with the beverage holder holding the coffee.

Maura sits it down on the hospital tray in the room before answering her mom. "What does it look like? I went to get us some breakfast. Cailin is going to need her strength." Maura reaches into the bag and passes her sister a breakfast platter and coffee.

"Maur, if you want me to get better, the hospital coffee probably wasn't the best idea,' Cailin says with a laugh, as she crinkles her nose at the less than appealing beverage.

"Cailin! Don't be rude," Hope says, shaking her head at her daughter.

Maura laughs. "That's okay mom. I forgot Jane and Cailin are not fans of the hospital coffee." Maura pulls up the chair next to her sister's bed and takes a seat. "I guess I should tell you both I also went upstairs to the lab and had myself tested to see if I am a match for Cailin's stem cell transplant."

"Why would you do that?"

Maura was taken aback by the sudden abrupt reaction from her mother.

"Why would I do that? You can't be serious mom? As a half sibling, I am going to be the best chance she has for a match. Why would I not be tested?"

"I just mean, I don't want to get Cailin's hopes up just for her to be disappointed. I wish you would have waited to tell her. That's all."

"She knows it is not 100% certain. If I am a match, it just saves having to find a match for her. As far as I am concerned, we should all be tested. You never know who could turn up to be a match."

Cailin glanced over at her mom and sister. "You know, this thing since I got sick of people talking like I am not in the room is really annoying."

"Sorry Cailin," Maura says as she glanced over at her mother, that seemed to be fidgeting nervously."Mom, are you okay?"

"Yeah. I'm fine. I'm sorry Maura. This is a lot to take in. I think I'm going to step outside and get some fresh air."

Just then, Cailin's doctor walked in and the three ladies turned their attention to her.

"Good morning Cailin," the doctor said cheerfully, but her cheerfulness turned to a scowl when she saw the food and coffee in front of Cailin. "You're not supposed to eat anything. We were about to take you in to put your port in."

Maura's eyes went wide as her cheeks blushed in embarrassment. "Cailin! Why didn't you tell me?"

Cailin looks at Maura and grins. "You didn't ask." Cailin turns her attention back to the doctor. "It's okay. I didn't touch it."

The doctor smiles. "Good girl. Do you have any questions?"

Cailin shakes her head. "My mom and my sister are both doctors. There's not much I don't already know. I know more than I care to at this point, to be bluntly honest. Let's just go get it over with."

The doctor looks over to Maura and Hope. "Do either of you have questions?"

Maura and Hope both shake their heads.

"I may have some questions later, but for now I am pretty clear on what the plans are. Just take care of my sister," Maura says as she places her hand on Cailins shoulder.

The doctor nodded before tapping Cailin on the foot. "They'll be in for you in a few minutes. It's a really simple procedure. You'll be in and out. After that, we should get your first treatment going by lunch time."

Cailin nods.

A few minutes later the nurses came and got Cailin and Hope stepped outside, leaving Maura alone in the room. She pulled out her cell to call Jane and give her an update.

After a few rings, Jane picks up. "Hey there beautiful! How's everything?" Jane asked as soon as she heard her wife's voice.

"Hi my love, the nurses just wheeled Cailin to get her port placed." Maura made her way over to the window and looked out over the parking lot.

"How's she doing? How are you doing? I'm sorry I couldn't be there," Jane replied as she shuffled through her paperwork.

Maura sighed deeply. "Cailin is handling it well for someone who is fully aware of what's about to happen to her and her body. I think as long as she is okay, I will be too. Also Jane, Cailin and I both understand why you couldn't be here today, it's okay." Maura smiled to herself. She loved the way Jane loved her and her family and the way she was always supportive.

"I will be there as soon as we are done for the day. Jess is going to ride with me."

Maura laughed as she heard Korsac. "Hey Maura, we are drowning here without you. Also, your wife is a little irritable without you around!" The detective yelled to Maura in the background.

"Thank you for that," Jane remarked. "Don't you have your own paperwork to do old man?" Jane threw a wadded up piece of paper at the older detective.

Jane!" Maura shook her head at her wife's antics.

"What? He started it, and besides, I'm only giving him a hard time." At this, both Jane and Maura were laughing.

"How's Jess handling everything? Does she seem okay to you?" Maura took a sip of her coffee only to scrunch her face like Cailin did previously. Her sister and wife were correct. This coffee was disgusting.

"I haven't seen her much yet today but she seemed okay for the few seconds I did see her. Oh," Jane says quickly. "How's Hope?" Maura's silence concerned the brunette.

"Tell me she's still there Maur."

"She's still here Jane, she stepped out for a moment. You don't have to go hunt her down." Maura said this last bit with a chuckle. She knew her wife all too well. "She's acting a bit strange, maybe it's just everything going on, but when I told her I was tested this morning to find out if i'm a match for Cailin her response was a little off. She acted like it upset her."

"How so?"

"She says it's because she doesn't want Cailin to be disappointed but it was just something about her words. She asked me why I would do that? Why would I not? It was just strange."

"Oh, is Dr. Maura Rizzoli-Isles guessing?" Jane smirked.

"Absolutely not, I do not guess." Maura was smiling at this point.

"Sounds like guessing to me." The brunette laughed causing her wife to laugh. Just then, Korsac stepped back into the bullpen.

"Grab your gear Rizzoli, we have a case," he said.

"Ba-" Jane went to speak but was cut off by her wife.

"You have to go, you have a case. It's okay love, go to work. I will call you with any new updates." Maura turned to see Hope walking back into the room. She held up her finger with her free hand.

"I love you Maur, I'll be there as soon as I can be," Jane said, making her way towards the elevators that Korsac was holding for her.

"I love you too Jane. Be careful."

"Careful is my middle name," Jane replied.

"Jane, you and I both know that is not true." The blonde let out a chuckle.

"It was worth a shot."

"Goodbye Jane, I love you, we can talk later."

Jane laughed. "I love you too Maur, talk to you soon." Maura hung up the phone and turned to her mother.

"Are you okay mom?" Maura looked at her mom with concern as she threw away her coffee.

Hope sits in the empty chair. "I'm fine Maura. The stress of all of this has just been a lot." Maura made her way over to sit next to her mother.

"I understand how difficult this all is mom, but you have me and Jane and the whole family supporting you and Cailin. We will get through all of this as a family." Maura smiled at her mother but the smile she received in return wasn't full, causing the blonde to push a little more.

"What is it mom? I get the feeling that it's not just the stress of Cailin's diagnosis. I feel like there is more to it that you aren't telling me." Hope looked at her daughter and then away quickly.

"It's fine Maura, really," Hope insisted.

"Mom, that's bullshit and you know it." Maura sits back in her chair, crossing her arms to her chest.

"Maura, please, this isn't the time for this." Hope stands and makes her way over to the window. Her actions left Maura with more questions than answers.

"Mom," Maura says softly. The last thing she wanted to do right now was fight with her mother.

"Maura please, Cailin will be back here soon and what I have to say is not something I want her to stumble into. I promise, I will tell you soon enough, just not right now. Please." Hope turns and faces her daughter with a pleading look, grateful to see the nurses wheeling Cailin back into the room.

"She's coming down off the anesthesia, so her sentences may not make much sense right now," the nurse said, as they put Cailin's bed back into place.

"How did it go?" Maura asked absentmindedly while still looking over at her mom.

"It was great!" Cailin smiles widely. Hope gently ran her hand through her daughter's hair shushing her, only for Cailin to mock her. Maura looks at the nurse trying her best to remain serious.

"Everything went great, the anesthesia should wear off shortly," the nurse remarked, seeing Maura's struggle to remain professional.

"Thank you," Maura says with a smile. As the nurse leaves, Hope pulls a chair next to Cailin's bed and continues her previous actions. Silence fell over the room momentarily. Both women assumed Cailin had fallen asleep until she suddenly spoke.

"Maura," Cailin says giggling. "Your name sounds funny. Mmmmaura." Cailin bursts into laughter causing Maura to chuckle.

"Cailin, why don't you get some rest and let the anesthesia wear off," Maura remarks, smiling down at her sister. Cailin shakes her head and sighs.

"No, where's Jess?" The brunette asked with her eyes closed.

"Jess is at work, she and Jane will come by after," Maura says. Cailin wasn't taking this as an answer.

"Noooo, I want Jess. Can you go get her?" Cailin looks over at her sister, barely keeping her eyes open. Maura sighs, looking over at her mother who had a confused expression on her face.

"No sweetie. I can't go get her, but I tell you what. Why don't you close your eyes for a bit and by the time you wake up, Jane and Jess will be here. Okay?" Maura hoped that this would work. Thelast thing she wanted was for Cailin to blurt out anything she would regret later.

Cailin thought that over. "I'll take a small nap," she says sleepily. "Just a small one," she says as her eyes fall heavily. After a few seconds, Cailin was out completely.

Hope looked at Maura and raised an eyebrow. "What was that about?"

Maura weighed her words carefully, knowing she couldn't lie.

"Her and Jess have gotten close through all this," Maura says matter of factly. "Jess is a big source of strength for her right now." Maura left it at that. She knew her mother would eventually find out the truth. She however thought it was not her place to tell her mother.

A little while later, Cailin was awoken when they began her first chemo treatment. She started up at the medication entering her body. "Isn't it weird. Chemo is poison. They are literally putting poison into my blood right now." She looked over at Maura as a tear went down her cheek. "They are killing everything in me Maura. Even the good stuff."

Maura reaches out and takes her sister's hand in hers. "Yes, but when you are done Cailin, you will be like new. You'll get through this. I promise."

Just then there was a light knock on the door. "Come in," Cailin called.

Blaire stuck her head in. "Hey, i'm on lunch break. Are you up for some company?"

Cailin nodded.

Blaire came in and placed a plastic bag full of food in front of Cailin. "Nona sent you some food from the cafe. She thought you may starve in here," Blaire said with a grin.

Cailin smiled. "Angela's cooking sounds great right now." She pulls the container out, taking a whiff. "Oh! Spaghetti and meatballs. My favorite!"

For the next little while, Cailin enjoyed her lunch while visiting with her family. For just a little while, she forgot she was sick.
