Chapter 10:

5 months later

Lena turned to face the large mirror in front of her. She blew out a breath, running her hands over her dress, smoothing out its nonexistent wrinkles. She couldn't recall ever being this nervous.

Breathe, she told herself, but it did nothing to abate her nerves.

A gentle knock on the door disturbed her reverie.

"Come in," she called. In the reflection, she saw the door open to reveal Mon-el. He looked regal in his gray and red tunic.

"Lena," he said with a smile. "You look radiant." His warmth was so genuine that, not for the first time, Lena was thankful for his continued presence in her life. She was grateful that her brother's actions hadn't driven him away. Instead, over the past few months he had become a solid and reliable friend. One of only a few in her life.

"Thank you," she said shyly, running her hands over her dress again. He walked over to her and grasped both of her hands in his.

"How are you feeling?" he asked. "Nervous?"

"Is it that obvious?" she asked.

"Only a little," he chuckled.

"I don't know why I am," she admitted. "This is the best decision I've ever made."

He shrugged easily. "I think everyone gets nervous on their day," he said. "Speaking of, are you ready? It's almost time."

She took one last look in the mirror and nodded. He held out his arm and she looped her arm through his.

"Let's do this," she said and he gave her arm a gentle squeeze. They walked out of the room into a hallway and stopped at a pair of large oak doors.

"Here goes nothing," Mon-el grinned and he knocked once on the doors. They swung open and the pair surged forward as music began to play.

Don't trip, don't trip, Lena practically chanted in her head. She passed the first few rows of guests, now standing at attention. Then, at last, she looked down the aisle, to the woman she was slowly walking towards.

Lena felt her breath catch in her throat. Kara was absolutely breathtaking in her floor length white gown. Her hair had been done up in braids and she was standing there, smiling with a bouquet in hand. Lena felt her smile grow wider at the most beautiful sight in the world.

Her procession seemed to take forever. All she wanted to do was run the rest of the way down the aisle and into Kara's arms. But she followed Mon-el's lead and took it slowly, one step at a time. She had a brief pang of sorrow at the knowledge that neither her father, nor Lex were here to make this walk with her. Seeming to sense her momentary sadness, Mon-el gave her arm another squeeze and smiled over at her.

Drawing level with Kara at last, she turned to hug Mon-el briefly before facing her bride. Kara's smile was the widest Lena had ever seen it, and that was saying something. She was practically glowing, her warmth and happiness radiating out of her like sunshine.

"Please be seated," the minister said.

The ceremony began and Lena did her best to pay attention to the minister's words on love. But as she stood there, holding hands with Kara, she found that no spoken words could describe the feeling in her chest. Her heart felt impossibly light and open, as if it had expanded beyond its limits just to let in the woman standing in front of her. Though she did her best to maintain a more somber demeanor as he rambled on about the sanctity of love and this lifetime bond, she couldn't help the goofy grin that kept breaking out over her face.

Finally, the minister came to the vows and Lena was so antsy she was nearly jumping out of her own skin.

"Repeat after me," the minister said, turning to face Lena. "I, Lena Kieran Luthor, take you, Kara Danvers, to be my wife, partner in life, and best friend.

Lena repeated his words, her voice shaking slightly.

"I accept you with your faults and your strengths, as I offer myself to you with my faults and my strengths."

Her smile began to grow wider as she spoke.

"I will love you faithfully though the good times and the bad, regardless of the obstacles we may face together," the minister said solemnly.

Lena's voice was light, on the verge of giddiness.

"I give you my hand and my heart, now and always, and vow to choose you every day to be my person."

As the last words left her lips, she slipped a gold ring onto Kara's left hand.

Then came Kara's turn. Lena looked into those beautiful blue eyes as the love of her life repeated her vows. There was a brief moment before the minister turned to face the pair.

"I now pronounce you wed," he said with a smile.

Lena let out an exhilarated laugh just as Kara wrapped her arms around her waist and pulled her in.
