When Mac and Sheldon got out of the doctor's office, it was getting late. Mac got in the Avalanche and did not say a word all the way back to the office. Sheldon was worried. There was no way of knowing what Mac would do next or what these women had planned for him. They got into the elevator to go up to the lab. "Mac, how do you feel?" Sheldon asked.
"Violated," Mac replied. He looked at Sheldon. "How am I supposed to do anything about this?"
"Resist it."
"I don't know what's coming next. What if they programmed me to kill everybody at the lab?"
Mac looked at Sheldon. "If they did, shoot me," he said. "That's an order."
Sheldon hoped it would not come to anything like that. He thought this was deeper than that. He did not think this had anything to do with the lab. He thought it had something to do with Mac alone. "I think they're wanting something else, Mac," he said.
"Like what?"
"I wish I knew."
The elevator doors opened at the lab. Jo came around the corner. "Just the two I was looking for?" she said.
"What now?" Mac asked.
"Cecilia Brimmer has flown the coup. Nowhere to be found."
Mac frowned. "I guess she thinks she has already done her damage."
"That's not all, Mac." Jo gave Mac a folder.
Mac opened the folder wondering how anything else could come up in this case. "Just look at that," Jo said.
"This woman who died fifty years ago was Cecilia Brimmer's grandmother?" Mac asked and looked at Jo. "What does this have to do with me?"
"Well, that's still a mystery and so is the reason that they killed Doris."
"Who is this woman going around claiming to be Victoria Wallace?"
"Doris said that her grandmother, Julia, owned that costume shop. Well, Julia was her Paternal grandmother. Victoria was her Maternal grandmother. And she was also Cecilia's."
Mac frowned. "Well, I am thoroughly stumped now," he declared. "Anymore news?"
"Not yet," Jo said.
Sheldon was looking at the folder. "Amazing," he said. "I don't see the point in all this."
"I don't think this has anything to do with vampires or anything like that," Jo said. "I think they just picked that because Doris owned the costume shop and this is the month for Halloween." She gave Mac another folder.
Mac opened that folder. "Rachel Wallace?" He looked at Jo. "Cecilia and Doris' mother?"
"Exactly. She was a supposed psychic and a hypnotist, spiritual advisor…and taken down by none other than…"
Mac stared at the folder in disbelief. He looked at Jo. "Rachel Wallace?" he said. "I remember that case. She was hypnotizing rich men when they came to her for therapy. She was making them will their fortunes to her and then having them killed."
"I think we've figured it out, Mac," Jo said.
Sheldon was incredulous. "You mean, these women are taking vengeance for their mother?" he asked. "Unbelievable."
"But why kill Doris?" Mac asked. "Or maybe she wasn't in on this and she was going to tell the police and they killed her and just added her to the scheme."
"That's not our biggest problem right now," Jo pointed out. "Our biggest problem is you. What are they going to do to you next?"
Mac frowned. "I don't know," he said.
"You can't be alone," Sheldon said. "You're going to have to stay around someone so we can make sure you don't hurt yourself or something."
Suddenly, Mac felt like he was in a trance. "I have to go to the bathroom," he said. "We were in that doctor's office a long time."
"I'll keep working on this," Jo said.
Mac nodded and headed for the bathroom but instead of going to the bathroom, he went around to the stairwell. He had something he had to do tonight and they would not stop him…
