Chapter 11: Their first kicks
Late March, 2009
With their boys tucked into their beds for the night, Sara and Grissom were enjoying movie night in their bedroom, and while they were in-between movies Grissom was in the bathroom and Sara was sitting up in bed, which during this time she felt something, causing her to smile as she shouted. "Griss!"
After turning off the faucet, he ran into the bedroom, looking frantic. "What is it, are you ok?"
She waved him over, so he got on the bed and moved closer to her before she took his hand and placed it on her stomach, the same spot she felt it, then a second later Grissom gasped as he looked at her in surprise. "That's a kick from one of our girls."
Sara nodded with a smile and tears in her eyes. "Yes, it is."
He smiled as he continued to feel the light kick against his palm, then he chuckled a second later, causing her to look at him with curiosity. "What is it?"
"It finally happened."
"What did?"
With a sparkle in his eyes, he replied. "I finally get to be the first person, outside of you of course, to feel the first kick of our children."
Sara shook her head. "No way, that can't be..."
He cuts her off with a raised eyebrow. "Thank about it, honey."
As Sara sat there, that's exactly what she did.
Flashback
Late January, 1988
Boston
In her dorm room, while her roommate was out studying with her study group, Sara and Grissom where on the phone talking about her latest doctor's appointment, and while he's done pretty good at the more important ones the last few months, this one he had to miss, which was understandable, considering he could only do so much being miles apart from her, but they both knew how much he wishes he was there for her.
After they talked about how each of them were doing, he asked about the baby, and with a smile, Sara placed her hand on her stomach, then just as she was about to say something, gasped, causing Grissom to go in panic mode. "Sara, what's wrong? Do you need to go to the hospital? Try and get a hold of..."
She cuts him off a second later when she chuckled. "Griss, it's ok, I'm fine."
"Sara..."
She cuts him off again. "Really." After feeling another tap against the palm of her hand, she continued. "She's kicking."
"Oh my god, really?"
Another chuckle and nod, even though he couldn't see her. "Yes, she's kicking, and I got admit it's a feeling like no other."
Before he could speak, the dorm door opened and Lea walked in, causing Sara to wave her over, and while the baby girl was kicking up a storm against the other woman's palm, all Grissom could say softly, missing a moment he should be apart of. "Man, I wish I was there right now."
Hearing the sad tone, Sara nodded with a few tears in her eyes. "I know, babe, me too."
Mid February, 2001
After going through the cupboards looking for snacks for Hailey's birthday party, who was coming in for a few days from Florida, Sara said out loud on what they needed so he wrote it all down before he walked up behind her and wrapped his arms around her waist so he could place is hand on her stomach and whisper in her ear. "And just call me for any cravings you might get."
She chuckled as she lightly elbowed him in the gut. "Get out of here, they should be here soon."
"I love you too."
She turned around and cupped his cheek with her eyes filled with love. "And I love you."
They kissed softly before pulling back and he placed his hand on her stomach again, hoping to feel the first kicks of his son, but when he didn't, he tried to hide his disappointment while kneeling down to her stomach. "Be a good boy, buddy."
Sara cups her husband's cheek again while speaking softly, knowing what he's been waiting for the last couple of days. "It will happen soon, babe." He nodded with a small smile as he stood up, and after another kiss, he turned and walked out of their beach house.
About 10 minutes later her sisters showed up earlier than expected, then 5 minutes after that Sara felt that familiar feeling, and while she could have tried to ignore it and wait for her husband to show up so he could be the first one to feel, she couldn't help it, she placed her hand on her stomach where she felt the tap and her sister was right there the next moment, which of course when Grissom walked in the house that was the scene he walked into, and when he placed his hand on her stomach it took close to five minutes before their son would do it again.
Late April, 2003
At the lab
In their shared office, Sara was at her desk since she was on desk duty more than being out in the field these days, while Grissom was out in the field, when she felt it, so she placed her hand on her stomach when Amanda walked into the office. "Sara? You ok?"
Sara nodded with a smile. "Yes, he's kicking."
Amanda placed her file on her desk and walked over to her, then filled with excitement, she placed her hand on her stomach and felt the light taps just as Grissom walked into the room.
He saw the scene, and sighed. "I missed it again, didn't I?"
Sara chuckled with a nod. "Sorry, babe."
Amanda asked. "What?"
Sara looked up at her college and replied. "He's missed the first kicks of our other children, and he was hoping he would get the first kick this time."
Amanda, knowing their past, gasped as she removed her hand from Sara's stomach. "Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry."
Grissom walked up to the desk as they both reassured her it was ok, then he smiled as he pressed the palm of his hand on her stomach, feeling the tap almost instantly.
End of Flashback
Sara came back to the present and started chuckling as she cupped her cheek. "Oh, babe, I really am sorry."
He shook it off with a smile. "It's honestly ok, they all came out safely and healthy, and at the end of the day, that's what matters the most." He then leaned down and kissed her stomach softly as he whispered. "But thank you for waiting for me little one." Right as he said that another feeling came through Sara, and she smiled while taking his hand and placing it against another spot on her stomach, feeling their other daughter's kick, Grissom smiled wider, on top of the world once again as Sara just watched the scene, her heart feeling up with love for him all over again.
Next Morning
Sara and Grissom were in the kitchen when the boys, who were still in their PJ's with their hair all over the place, came into the room, they smiled at them before Sara asked. "What would you boys like to drink with your breakfast?"
After they both asked for milk, Sara poured it in their cups before picking them up from the counter and headed for the table, but stopped midway, just as she reached the kitchen island, and placed the cups on the surface as Arthur asked in concern. "Mommy?"
Grissom, who had his back turned towards her because he was at the stove, turned around and asked. "Honey?"
Sara raised up her hand and waved off her husband before she smiled at her boys. "Hey come here, guys." Grissom smiled in understanding as he went back to his cooking while the boys rushed to their mom, then she took their hands and continued. "Now feel right, here."
She placed their small hands on her stomach, then a moment later, they felt it, but it shocked them so they removed their hands like they touched something hot with wide-eyes, and Arthur asked. "What was that mommy?"
Sara chuckled before replying. "That was a kick from one of your sisters." Another feeling, Sara asked for their hands again and they each got to feel two different spots, causing the boys to chuckle while whispering how strange, but cool it was.
A moment later there was a knock on the door, so Arthur asked. "Can I get the door?"
Sara nodded, and as he was rushing out, she said. "And don't forget..."
He cuts her off. "To ask who it is first, I know mommy."
They hear excitement from their son, then the next thing Sara sees is Arthur practically dragging his older sister in the room, causing them to chuckle.
"Good morning."
Melissa nodded with a smile as Arthur spoke with a smile towards their mother. "I told her that our sisters were kicking, can she feel too?"
Sara smiled at the excitement her oldest son was showing before she spoke. "Aw baby, it's something that just happens we can't..."
Right as she said that, she took her oldest daughter's hand and placed it in the correct spot, causing Melissa's eyes to light up. "Oh my god, that's amazing."
While this wasn't the first time she had touched a pregnant stomach when a baby was kicking, this one was a little more special because in this moment it was her sisters. (She didn't really remember touching her adoptive's mother stomach when she was pregnant with Luke since she was four.)
Sara looked at her daughter's bright eyes while she nodded. "Yeah it is."
Melissa and her shared a smile before she turned around and smiled at her husband. "Babe come here and feel this." She then looked at her mother again. "If it's alright with you."
Sara nodded with a smile. "Of course."
When Deion stopped next to his wife, which still caused his heart to race thinking of her like that, Sara took his hand and placed it on her stomach before another kick was going on.
Deion also smiled with a nod. "That is pretty cool."
Deion removed his hand and him and his wife shared a loving look before he walked up to his father-in-law to see if he needed help while Sara raised an eyebrow at her daughter, which her daughter understood the look from her, so she shook her head with a smile while she walked to the fridge to get some milk with her breakfast as Sara walked towards the table with her sons cups of milk
Her and Deion had another decision about kids and both decided they wanted to wait until he was more established here and she is more closer to being done with her schooling, which she'll be going to UCLA in the fall after taking a year off, not only so she could concentrate on her wedding plans but she really needed a break.
Eventually breakfast was done and they all ate together as a family, a tradition that started the moment Melissa and Deion officially moved here.
