"Let's go Lakers!" Robbie cheers, then places his fingers in his mouth to make a loud whistling sound
He and Cat sit side-by-side at the basketball game, a bucket of popcorn between the two of them to share. They're getting quite a lot of attention, which is normal for Cat but quite strange for Robbie. He's never been in public with someone as famous as her before, and he isn't sure how to handle all of the people staring.
"Wow!" Cat grins
"What?" Robbie asks, suddenly self-conscious "D-did I do something wrong?"
"No, not at all." Cat assures him "I'm just really impressed is all. I've always wanted to know how to whistle like that!"
"Oh, it's not that hard!" He tells her "Here, take these two fingers and put them on either side...clench your teeth like this and just...blow."
"Like this?"
"Just like that."
Cat tries positioning her fingers in her mouth just like Robbie had showed her, but has very little luck. When she blows air out and attempts to whistle, no noise escapes her mouth...only spit and air.
"Fuck!" She pouts
"Hey, it's okay." Robbie says "It takes a few tries before you can-"
Before he can finish his thought, the Lakers score and cause everyone around them to cheer very loudly. Startled, Robbie bumps his cup of soda with his elbow, spilling the carbonated beverage all over his lap.
"Dammit..." He sighs, reaching for napkins
"Hey..." Cat reaches over and grabs his hand in hers "It happens to everybody."
"There!" Jade nudges Andre "They're smiling at each other! Get that! Get that!"
"Got it..." Andre nods, snapping a few pictures with his camera
There had been rumblings that Cat was going to make an appearance at tonight's game. Despite having very little interest in basketball, Jade decided to take the chance and use some of Mark's resources to get tickets in hopes that Cat would not only show but bring Robbie along with her. Taking that chance paid off, and she's been able to take notes on them all night from across the court, while Andre takes pictures for them to use in the column.
"How'd things go with that Beck guy at dinner last night?" Andre asks Jade "You get anything out of him?"
"About Robbie?" Jade clarifies "No, unfortunately I think that was just a weird coincidence. It's a dead end."
"You get anything out of him that wasn't about Robbie?" Andre follows up
"Might've kissed him." Jade smirks with a shrug
"Oh, look at you...all excited about a boy." Andre teases "I can only imagine what work will be like tomorrow if the date Tori is on tonight goes well too."
"Oh, Andre." Jade rolls her eyes playfully "You know I'm not one to gossip."
"You run a gossip column."
The buzzer signaling the end of the fourth quarter sounds, and everyone in the Staples Center erupts into cheers as they realize the Lakers have won. Cat's security guard quickly escorts her and Robbie off of the floor and down one of the tunnels, then out to their waiting car.
"So, are we on to the finals now?" Cat asks Robbie as the car begins moving "I'm not going to lie, I don't really know much about basketball."
"No, we still need to win one more game first." Robbie informs her "I think we'll be able to pull it off though."
"I hope so." Cat admits "Hey, maybe if they play the last game here...we could come again."
"I would love that." Robbie smiles
He asks the driver to take Cat home first, so he can walk her to her door and say goodnight like a gentlemen. It seemed like a good idea at the time, but when they actually reach her house and the car comes to a stop...he feels his heart drop into his stomach.
"Eight out of ten women believe that the first kiss will tell them...everything...they need to know about a relationship." He hears Beck's words in his head "And believe me, she has definitely thought about it."
He has to kiss her tonight, he has to. If he doesn't, he might not get the opportunity to ever again. With shaky hand, Robbie opens Cat's door for her and offers her a hand to help her step out onto the pavement. She takes it with a smile, and holds onto it as the walk towards the front door.
"I had a really great time with you tonight, Robbie." Cat smiles as they approach the door
"I had...a really great time too!"
They reach the door and Cat reaches into her purse for her keys. Robbie watches her closely as she does so...she seems to be taking her time...almost like she's...playing with them.
"A woman that doesn't want a kiss? She takes her keys out, puts them in the door, and goes inside. A woman that wants a kiss? She plays with her keys."
Oh my god, she wants him to kiss her!
He looks up at her and they briefly make eye contact. His eyes...looking into her's...she's so beautiful...and he can't do it.
"Well, goodnight then." He says quickly, breaking eye contact and turning to walk away
"Goodnight, Robbie..." Cat sighs, a disappointed tone in her voice
Robbie feels his chest growing tight again, much like it had when Beck had suggested the kiss in the first place. Robbie reaches into his pocket, fumbling for his inhaler again. He brings it to his lips and inhales a puff of the medication, then looks down at the plastic device in his hand.
Man up. He thinks to himself You're acting like an idiot.
"Cat!" He turns around before he really has a chance to think things though
"Yes?"
Robbie takes a deep breath and tosses his inhaler to the side, and it clatters on the ground a few feet away.
"Hold on..." He tells her nervously, walking back towards her
Without any hesitation he approaches her, stopping only inches away before he leans forward and puckers his lips. At first, Cat isn't sure what's happening, but then she realizes and with a smile...takes his face in her hands and presses a kiss to his lips.
"I like your lips." She smiles as they break away
"They seem to like you too..." Robbie smirks, and kisses her again with a newfound sense of confidence "Okay...goodnight."
"Goodnight, Robbie." Cat grins, actually inserting her keys into the lock this time "Call me."
"I will."
After she opens the door and slips inside, Robbie turns around to head back to the car...and he can't help from spinning in circles a few times as he does so. He doesn't even care that her driver is still watching him.
He just kissed Cat Valentine.
And she kissed him back.
"You get anything good last night?" Tori asks as Jade walks into work the next morning
"Oh we got...a lot...of good things." Jade assures her "What about you? How'd your date go?"
"Not great..." Tori sighs
"Uh oh..." Jade frowns "Another dick?"
"No, no..." Tori shakes her head "It was the same dick...Ryder..."
"Tori...c'mon. Why did you go out with him again?"
"Everyone deserves a second chance!" Tori is quick to defend herself "I thought that he might've had an off night the last time we went out...and he was brave enough to ask again so I just thought...I dunno. Dinner did go better and then..."
"And then?"
"I might've slept with him..."
"Well, alright..." Jade nods, sitting down on the edge of Tori's desk "Probably not the choice I would have made on the second date with a mediocre guy but to each her own...how was it?"
"So good..." Tori admits with a small smile, but it quickly fades "Everything was so good. Dinner...the sex...and then I woke up around two in the morning and he was already gone."
"Did he call?"
"No."
"Text?"
"No."
"Anything to explain himself?"
"No..."
Jade can see that her friend is hurt, and while this would be a very appropriate time to drop an 'I told you so'...she doesn't want to hurt her further.
"I'm sorry, Tori..." Jade reaches out and touches her hand "Really, I am."
"S'okay..." Tori shrugs "I should've known better."
"No, he shouldn't have been such a dick." Jade assures her "Hey...wanna make him pay for it?"
"Jade..."
"C'mon, we're gossip columnists. It's what we do...we expose people." Jade reminds her "Do you know where he works?"
"A law firm near The Grove..."
"Okay." Jade smirks "Be ready to go at four-thirty."
"RYDER!"
Ryder turns over his shoulder, and is startled when he sees Jade and Tori angrily marching towards him. They had left their own office early to confront him outside of his, and hopefully embarrass him a bit too.
"Hey..." He tries his best to smile "What's up, ladies?"
"Don't you 'what's up?' me." Jade rolls her eyes before grabbing his ear and pinching "Did you go out with Tori last night?"
"Who?"
"Tori!" Jade pinches harder and turns Ryder's head so he can see who she's talking about "Did you go out with her last night?"
"Yes, ouch!"
"Did you sleep with her with the intention of never calling her again?" Jade asks him
"What? No?"
Jade pinches his ear harder "Okay, maybe!"
"Go ahead, Tori."
"Huh?"
Before Ryder can realize what's happening, Tori knees him swiftly in the crotch...causing him to collapse to the ground in pain.
"You heard it here first, ladies and gentlemen!" Jade yells so everyone passing by can hear "Ryder Daniels is a filthy scumbag who uses women for sex and then never calls them back!"
"Not so loud!" Ryder groans
"Oh, shut up."
"Oh, I should have never trusted that guy..." Ryder sighs as he rolls onto his side
"Trusted who?" Tori asks, kneeling beside of him "Don't tell me there's more of you."
"The date doctor." Ryder tells her through gritted teeth
"What?"
"What?" Jade repeats, dropping to the ground beside Ryder "Did you say...date doctor?"
"Yes..."
"He's real?" Tori gasps "See, Jade? I told you?"
"What's his name?" Jade asks Ryder
"I don't know?"
"Tell me his name." Jade pinches his ear again "Don't make Tori kick you in the balls again."
"Ouch!" Ryder exclaims "I don't know his name, honest! He doesn't tell you his name!"
"So how do you contact him?" Jade presses him for more details
"Let go of me and I'll fucking show you!" Ryder cries out
Tori nudges Jade with an expression that tells her to let go of Ryder's ear, and Jade does exactly that. Relieved, Ryder reaches into his pocket and pulls out his wallet. He grabs a small, black business card and hands it over to Jade.
"There." Ryder sighs "That's how you get ahold of him."
"You're sure?"
"Yes, I'm sure."
Jade and Tori each look at the card and before exchanging a look with each other.
"This could be big..." Tori says quietly "If we get this guy..."
"We have to send the magazine to print by tomorrow night." Jade reminds her "We'd have to act fast."
"Let's get Andre to help." Tori suggests "We might just be able to do it."
"Thanks for your help, Ryder." Jade says suddenly, looking to the man still laying on the ground "Try not to break anymore hearts this week, m'kay?"
"Whatever." Ryder scoffs
The two women begin walking away, eager to start working on the new 'date doctor' story. Tori hesitates for a moment before turning and running back to Ryder.
"What now?" He sighs
"Nothing." Tori shrugs, then kicks him again "Just needed to get that out of my system."
"Good for you." Jade smirks as Tori catches up to her "God, I can't wait to expose this idiot."
"Should we call him?" Tori asks, looking at the card Jade had taken from Ryder
"We shouldn't, no." Jade shakes her head "This guy only works with men, we'll need to get someone else to do it."
"I bet Andre would."
"I bet he would too." Jade agrees as her phone starts to ring
She smiles when she sees Beck's name lighting up the screen, and answers the call quickly.
"Hello?"
"Wow, just hearing your voice makes me smile." Beck greets her "How are you?"
"I'm great." Jade admits "How are you?"
"I'm good, I think. Actually...you know what? I-I'm good." Beck stumbles over his words "Listen, is there any context under which you would consider facial adenoma and pharmaceutical intervention a date?"
"Not at all." Jade chuckles, thinking back to the memory of the last time she saw Beck
"I was afraid of that." Beck admits "How about a do-over?"
"What do you have in mind?"
"Well, clearly I can't be trusted to take you anywhere in public..." Beck says, causing them both to laugh "So what if I cooked you dinner at my place on Friday?"
"Oh, I promised my friend I would go to a speed dating thing with her on Friday night." Jade tells him, looking to Tori who happened to be the friend in question "For moral support, of course...but I'm free tomorrow?"
"Tomorrow sounds perfect." Beck admits "I'll text you my address. See you at seven?"
"Seven it is." Jade smiles "I'll see you then."
