Thanks for all the love on the last chapter! Truly means a lot.
Disclaimer: I don't own Divergent
February 27th: Tris
Today is the second game of the lacrosse season. Tobias played phenomenally last weekend. It was an away game, about a half an hour drive, so me and my parents headed over to watch him and Nate. The rest of our siblings stayed home, they had work to do and the other school was kind of far… It was also my first time leaving Milo in the care of someone other than me, my parents, or Tobias.
Caleb did a good job at watching him, he's already potty trained from his time at the shelter, so we don't have to worry about that. He stayed at my house for the first week, acclimating to being away from the only home he knew. He really likes all of my family, and they like him too. Even my mom, who was very angry with us in the beginning for getting him, has warmed up to him. She's his main companion when Tobias and I are away at school, after all, and she's just begun to be able to walk again without her crutches so her and Milo often do a circle of the neighborhood together in the morning.
After their first victory last Saturday, the team went out for sandwiches, which is sort of a post-game ritual I guess. I could tell Nathan was really happy… getting to be a part of a good team and experiencing comradery and all that. He really looks up to Tobias as well.
When Tobias arrived back at home, I was there waiting for him with Milo. It was going to be Milo's first weekend at his house, and I could tell how excited Tobias was. He had Milo's bed set up in his room, and his food and water all ready to go.
I warned him that Milo probably won't sleep on his doggy bed, he never does at our house. Instead he chooses someone to cuddle up to for the night. It's usually me, but he's also taking a liking to Oliver and surprisingly, Owen. Tobias seemed more than happy with this, though.
Milo loved Tobias's house. Marcus was away on business and Tiffany was at her own house, so it was just the three of us. We played in Tobias's backyard, before feeding him dinner. After dinner he was already quite tired so we took him upstairs and he curled up on Tobias's bed. Tobias and I went back downstairs and watched a movie on the couch… where I also properly congratulated him on the team's win. It was our first time doing something like that on a couch…
I went home for the night, leaving him with Milo, but I came back the next Sunday. We played some more, took him to the park, and then I brought Milo back home. Tobias is sad that he can only get Milo for weekends, but there'd be no one at the Eaton home to watch him on weekdays. Hopefully once Summer starts we can come up with a better system for Milo.
Today's game is a home game, and pets are permitted in the bleachers, so I decided to bring Milo. There'd be no one to watch him if we left him at home since everyone is coming to this game. My entire family, as well as Tobias's. Even Zeke and Shauna have showed up to give their support.
We all sit together in the front corner. I sit next to Caleb with Milo wriggling in my lap, on Caleb's left is Susan, and to my right sit my parents. My mother has Anna in her lap, and in front of us are Oliver, the twins, and Owen. Ezra claimed he was coming, but as always, is late. I hope Nathan doesn't get too embarrassed by all of us here… but if he does then he can get over it. Marcus and Tiffany sit a couple rows behind us, talking quietly amongst themselves.
The boys are already on the field, getting ready to start, and I spot Zeke and Shauna in the next section of bleachers. Shauna wears a large hoodie that conceals her baby bump, and Zeke has a protective arm wrapped around her. They are both chatting animatedly, and I see Zeke reach behind them to grab a neon sign. I let out a large laugh when I see that Tobias's picture is plastered across it. It reads "Number 4 on the field, Number one in my heart". I shake my head. Tobias begged me not to do anything like that, so I complied, not wanting to embarrass him… though, I am wearing his sweatshirt. Hopefully he doesn't mind, I just wanted to show my support.
The face off is about to begin. Tobias vs. whoever is the other team's captain. It's easy to spot him on the field, approaching the center with the number 4 on his jersey and the bright red stick that I gave him. I'll be honest- I knew nothing about lacrosse before Tobias. As the season approached, I begged him to teach me some of the basic rules. Turns out, it's not too hard of a game to follow. It's a little boring, not gonna lie, but watching Tobias play is not boring at all. I did some research on my own last week before the first game, but I still had a little difficulty following it at times. There are lots of weird timing rules that just don't make sense.
Hopefully by now, though, I have a better grasp on the rules. The scoreboard is also a big help, letting me know who's ahead. The ref blows his whistle and drops the ball. Tobias and the other dude scramble for it with their sticks, butting into each other, but eventually Tobias becomes victorious and rushes down the field.
Tobias is an attackman, which means he's on offense. The other two attackmen follow him, as do the midfielders. Nathan's a midfielder, and I see him collide into a member from the opposite team, trying to keep him back.
I bite my lip in worry. The defensemen from the opposing team have come onto Tobias so he passes the ball to another attackman. He catches it with grace, and I watch in amazement as the team members continue making their way down the field, passing the ball back and forth and carefully evading the opposing team.
Nathan is hesitant, staying in midfield, but I see Tobias beckon him to come down. They could use him, I guess. A small scuffle has started to happen, and I notice the ref make his way over there. Luckily it gets resolved, when a member of our team darts out of the group and passes the ball over to Nathan who happens to be closest to the goal.
Nathan catches it -a bit clumsily- but he ends up launching it straight toward the goal. The goalie leaps out to block it, but he's unsuccessful, because it lands. Pride surges through me as everyone in my family stands up and cheers. He did it, he scored the first goal! Milo barks a couple times, not knowing what's going on but wanting to join in on the excitement. I've never felt prouder of my brother. The game is just beginning.
It's the third quarter by now. We won the first quarter, 5-3. The other team got the second one, however, winning 3-2. We're all on edge now. Apparently the third quarter is when the momentum is gained, and you can see a clear winner based on team performance. I can tell that our team is tired, but some adrenaline has been kicked into them after their loss last time. They know they need to try harder.
Zeke obnoxiously waves the sign in the air, and Tobias's helmet and his distance from me block my ability to see his reaction. Milo had to go to the bathroom, so my dad took him for a small walk around the school. Ezra has now arrived, and when we questioned what took him so long he waved a large bag of fast food in the air. We all shut up after that, since we were quite hungry.
The face off is starting again, and I text my father to come back. I know he wouldn't like to miss any of this. As soon as the ball is dropped, I can tell the other team's captain is feeling a little bit more violent. He instantly clashes into Tobias roughly, which earns him a foul. The ref restarts the quarter then, dropping the ball and warning the player this time.
They wrestle over it for a few seconds, and Tobias comes out victorious again, darting down the field. It seems that the opposing team has come up with a new plan, now, because they all circle him. I can see Tobias straining to pass the ball to any of his teammates, but he's blocked off from them. This can't be good.
I grab Caleb's hand, feeling a bit nervous now as Tobias attempts to fake left and get away from the circle. He's unsuccessful, though, because another player just butts into him. This sends him crashing back into another member of the opposing team, and then it's a full blown scuffle. Oh God. My mother clasps my shoulder in worry, but relief floods through me when Tobias makes it out of the huddle. He still has the ball too. The ref has given the team another foul, and Tobias is attempting to leap away. His leg is still caught within the group though, and he plummets backwards.
I release a shriek that I didn't know I was holding in and stand up. The ref blows his whistle loudly, and stops the game. A medic and a few sports medicine students rush up to see what has happened. This is unfair, though, because I can't see if he's okay.
I look behind to see Marcus also standing up, worry etched across his face. My family all murmur amongst themselves as the crowd surrounding Tobias parts and we get a good view of him. He's lying on the field, his leg twisted at a grotesque angle. And he's not moving.
My foot taps nervously outside the hospital waiting room. I'm trying to push back memories of the last time I was here, waiting for news about my mother. I'm not afraid like that anymore, though, I am not. Tobias is going to be okay. There are things out of your control, I remind myself. Marcus and Tiffany sit to my right. They both look worried, but they are composing themselves far better than I am.
The ambulance arrived to get Tobias during the game. They would have to play without him, I guess. I requested to ride with him, but they wouldn't let me. Marcus offered to drive me over to the hospital and the rest of my family stayed to watch Nathan. My mother told me to text her once there was news of Tobias… so did Zeke and Shauna since they said they were gonna head home. I'll probably forget to text them, though.
I really hope he's not badly injured… obviously he's not dead, but lacrosse injuries can get pretty bad sometimes. I'm wondering if encouraging my own brother to play was a bad idea as well.
"He's awake, and ready to see you," the doctor says, emerging from the door. In a rush I get up, ready to race into the room, then I realize that I should probably let Marcus go first since he's his father. To my surprise, Marcus clasps a hand on my shoulder, his other hand linked in Tiffany's, and the three of us walk into the room together.
Tobias lays on the hospital bed, a gown draped over him and his leg propped up. By now it is enveloped in a cast, and Tobias looks exhausted and miserable. I contain myself from instantly jumping on him, and instead just try to convey my relief that he's okay and love for him in a single gaze. He smiles sadly back at me… whatever news the doctor gave him, it cannot be good.
"So," the doctor says, shutting the door behind him. "Mom, dad, and little sister?" He asks, pointing at each one of us.
I instantly scowl and go to correct him, but then I realize he might not let me in here if I'm not immediate family, so I nod. Tiffany nods as well. She's definitely closer to Tobias's mother than I am to his sister anyway…
"So, Tobias here has torn his ACL," the doctor begins and Tobias gives us all a sarcastic thumbs up at this. "Obviously you know this means no more lacrosse this year." My heart clenches for Tobias. Lacrosse was the thing he was most looking forward to, and now it's wrenched away from him. He doesn't look at any of us now, he just fiddles with the blanket on the hospital bed.
"So, what is the treatment for this?" Marcus asks, concern clear on his face.
"Well, we've got him on some medication, anti-inflammatory meds and painkillers, so he'll wanna keep taking those. We decided against a surgery for now, just because it's not super severe… but we'll see how he heals. He's going to be on crutches for about 6-8 weeks… and he'll need to attend physical therapy. I have all the information here, we can go over it whenever you'd like." The doctor holds up a clipboard. "And once the cast comes off, no strenuous physical activity for another few months… and it's important that these rules are followed if you want lacrosse next year to be a possibility," the doctor warns Tobias.
6 to 8 weeks in a cast… Tobias is going to fucking hate this. Marcus asks the doctor a few more questions before the doctor leaves us. He says that Tobias is set to be discharged and we can call for a nurse whenever we're ready.
"Are you okay?" Marcus asks him hesitantly.
"I'm alive…" Tobias grumbles. "I guess I'm glad nothing is seriously broken, but it sucks not getting to play for the rest of the season."
"I know it is not ideal, we're all wishing a speedy recovery on you so that you can play next year," Tiffany says kindly. Tobias smiles and nods, but he still looks miserable.
The room grows quiet and Marcus and Tiffany must sense that Tobias and I need alone time because Marcus announces that they're going to talk to the doctor about physical therapy before slipping out of the room.
Once they're gone, I approach the hospital bed and sit next to Tobias, running my fingers through his hair. He nudges his head into my hand and lets out a little groan. "Fuck my life," he murmurs.
"Hey, I'm just really glad you're okay… it could've been a lot worse." I place a kiss on his forehead, letting my lips linger there before pulling back.
"On the field… I just felt like I was coming alive. I love this sport… and now I can't play for the rest of the season? And the guys… God, I was so dumb. I let them down. I'm the captain and I got injured."
"Hey… don't be too hard on yourself. It's not your fault. At all. They'll understand. You're an amazing captain and a wonderful player. And if you want to play next year then you really need to take this recovery process seriously," I tell him.
"Yeah, yeah… I don't know how well I can do 6-8 weeks on crutches, Tris."
"Well… the Prior's will be with you… Milo, too… your dad… Tiffany… Zeke and Shauna… you know, your support system. We all love you so much, and we have your back. I know it's not gonna be easy… but at least you're in one piece."
He grabs my hand and slides his fingers through mine. He still looks a little bit upset so I squeeze his hand. "What's bothering you?"
"This… sport was the only thing I had that was making me special. It's like I had this defining characteristic, this talent, and now I'm just… nothing."
I let out a laugh of disbelief. I can't believe he's talking this way about himself. "Tobias, you're not nothing. You'll never be nothing. I love you… so much. More than I probably should. You're fucking phenomenal, with or without this sport. You're kind, funny, smart, compassionate, loyal… you're the best friend I've ever had… and the greatest boyfriend ever. No one has cared for me as much as you do and knowing you… has been one of the greatest experiences of my life. You aren't nothing… please never say that. You're everything to me… and you just need to keep your chin up. This is a setback but you don't have to let it define you. You're gonna make it through this… with all of our support, I promise."
Tobias nods, and looks up at me with a small smile. He tugs gently on his sweatshirt that I'm wearing, and pulls me down for a deep kiss. After a minute or two I pull back, grinning, even though I'm still hurting for him a lot. I need to stay strong, though. He can get through it, I know… but he deserves better. "Number four on the field, number one in my heart," I quote Zeke and Shauna's cheesy sign.
He rolls his eyes, "Oh, shut up," he huffs, pulling me back down for another kiss. I laugh against his mouth, my heart surging with so much love for him. How we can manage to turn some of the most difficult moments into fond memories is beyond me… though, maybe that's just how it is when you're with someone who means the absolute world to you. I'm so, so certain that we belong together now. We've seen some of the worst of it with each other and we've never shied away… it only brings us closer together. I am his and he is mine and it has been that way all along.
Ahh! Let me know what you think please! Reviews are so appreciated.
Also, I published a Halloween fic today! It's going to be 2 parts… the second part should be up soon. It's called Thriller, and if you're into halloween and the fall season and fourtris you would really like it! Even if you don't celebrate Halloween, it is a nice Fourtris fic. Please check it out and leave a review. I spent a lot of time on it and it would mean a lot.
Have a good one.
