Sofia stayed hidden in Emma's room for the next hour or two, trying to stay distracted on her phone and not focus on the mass confusion she was feeling.
Thankfully, Scott didn't stay for long after she shunned him in the garden and stormed back in the house, and Sofia emerged from Emma's room not long after he left. Han was cooking dinner as she came down the stairs and it smelled amazing. Sofia's stomach started rumbling at the scent; she was starving.
Unfortunately, no matter how good the homemade spaghetti bolognese tasted, it wasn't enough to break the awkward silence that fell over the dinner table. Han and Jyn were making conversation but Sofia said nothing. She could feel their eyes glance over to her every now and again, as she silently ate her food. It was as if Jyn knew best not to mention the events that took place earlier today, so this just meant that there were more moments of elongated silence.
Sofia felt bad for being so quiet. After all she was finally with her mom! She should be anything but quiet, but a thousand thoughts preoccupied her mind that there almost wasn't room to think about anything else. Most of these thoughts were angry ones; they were mostly angry towards Scott but also Emma. Sofia couldn't help but feel slightly betrayed by her sister, that she didn't care to inform of her of her Scott's existence before she got here. Sofia knew that there would be a lot to talk about with her.
When everyone was finished with their meal, Han got up from his seat and collected everyone's plates, putting them in the sink to soak.
Emma thanked Han for dinner and excused herself from the table. As she made her way towards the hallway, she heard Jyn's voice call after her: "Are you sure you don't want anything else to eat, Em? Perhaps we can sit in the living room and watch a film together?"
Her heart ached at her mother's suggestion. She wanted more than anything to spend time with her mom, but she was so upset with everything that had gone on today she kind of just wanted to go up to Emma's bedroom and stay there by herself.
"I'm- I'm kind of tired from all the travelling so I think I'm just going to go to bed." Sofia replied quietly, looking back at her mom.
Jyn managed a smile, "Okay, darling. Well I'll see you tomorrow."
"Goodnight, kid." Han chimed in.
Sofia nodded back at both of them and made her way upstairs.
When she was gone, Han directed one his infamous 'you really nailed that one' looks towards Jyn.
Jyn shifted her gaze as Sofia disappeared from her eyesight to Han and noticed his raised eyebrows.
"Don't look at me like that! I know, it's a mess." She said with an exasperated sigh.
Han gave an inward smile, "You should've told her about him sooner." And he took a sip of his glass of whiskey, "I bet you didn't tell her about the other thing either, did you?"
Jyn put her head in her hands and let out another long sigh, "I didn't get the chance to. I don't even know how I'm going to breech that topic with her."
"You just need to talk to her, properly. Ease her into it." Han replied.
Jyn reached over the table to take the whiskey bottle and poured herself another drink, "Yeah, take her to a public place so she can't freak out." She said sardonically.
"She won't freak out," Han said with reassurance. "Hopefully." He paused for a second, "C'mon, Jyn, have a little faith in your daughter. When she realises how happy you are, she'll come around."
Jyn took a large gulp of her whiskey, "God, I hope you're right."
"Hey, have I ever been wrong before?" Han smiled, bringing his arms up by his sides.
Jyn shot Han a sarcastic look. He had been wrong about many things many times before.
Han huffed, "Okay, I see your point. But trust me, I'm right about this."
Jyn really wanted to believe him. She knew this conversation was going to be difficult, but it was one that was needed to be had, especially if Scott was going to be around for a long time.
She wondered why Emma had reacted so badly to him. Was it because she hadn't told her that she was seeing him? Or maybe he said something harsh to her whilst she was in the house? Jyn knew that sometimes Scott wasn't always the easiest person to get along with, Han could tell you about that, but he was nothing but sweet to her so she wouldn't expect him to treat her daughter any less. And Scott had been so excited to meet her. Perhaps it was Emma who was harsh out of defence, after all she had never met the man.
Jyn couldn't wrap her head around why Emma didn't seem to take interest in Scott, and she knew that she had a tough road ahead of her convincing her daughter that Scott was a good match for herself. Jyn in that moment had little faith that she could convince Emma; she knew how stubborn she could be, she was her daughter after all.
But it had to be done. Jyn knew she would have to try again in the morning when Emma had slept on things, she did seem tired from camp. It was probably just the shock of being away from home for a month coupled with the jet lag.
Emma would come around. Right?
It was early in the morning when Sofia decided to call her sister at about 5AM; It wouldn't be too late back in California so Sofia hoped Emma would answer.
She had hardly slept all night anyway so waking up in order to make the phone call wasn't difficult, despite the fact that she was exhausted herself.
She had been up all night, not just because she wasn't used to the time zone yet, but also because the events of the previous day were so emotionally draining for her. Well, meeting her mum and Han was amazing but meeting Scott was a completely different story. His smug face came into her mind that instant and she felt the anger rise up inside of her.
Sofia forced herself to push her anger to one side as she grabbed her phone from the small table-top next to the bed
Emma's room was small in width but long in shape. The walls were white, but photos, posters and tapestries covered them completely from head to toe. There was a small double bed in the corner of the room and a colourful throw was draped over it, many cushions and pillows scattered on the bed; Sofia had to remove some of them in order to actually lie down properly. The room's theme could best be described as bohemian which Sofia thought matched her sister's personality very well.
Despite the room's cosy attic feel, Sofia didn't feel calm at all and she made her way to the tiny en-suit bathroom that was on the other side of her sister's bedroom. She opened the door and put the toilet lid down, sitting on top of it. She didn't want to risk her mom or Han hearing her conversation, so she made the call from the bathroom with the door closed.
She and Emma discussed maybe swapping their phones but, in the end, they just swapped their phone cases instead, just in case, so no one got suspicious. They also agreed to save each other's phone numbers under an alias; Sofia saved Emma under the name of 'Carrie'.
She opened her phone and dialled Emma's number. It rang for a few seconds, but it felt like hours as Sofia begged in her mind for Emma to answer.
"C'mon, Em. Pick up, pick up." She muttered to herself.
Finally, the ringing stopped as someone answered on the other end.
"Hello?" It was Emma's voice, but she was still imitating Sofia's accent.
Sofia breathed a sigh of relief, "Oh thank God! Emma it's me."
"Oh hi, Felicity!" Emma continued in her fake accent. "How are you?"
"Felicity? What?" Sofia's face scrunched up into a confused expression, "No, Emma it's me, Sofia."
And then it clicked that Emma must've been calling her by her fake name which meant that she was either in the presence of her dad or Leia.
"Wait, are you with dad?" She asked.
"Yeah I am but it's okay, I can talk." Emma replied cheerfully and Sofia heard her excuse herself.
After a minute Emma's voice appeared once again on the phone, the American accent gone, speaking at a thousand miles per hour.
"Okay, now I can talk. Oh my God, Sofe I am having such a great time! Dad is amazing! I can't believe I've gone my whole life without knowing him-"
"Em." Sofia tried to interject.
Emma didn't hear her as she continued gushing, "And Leia! Sofia you did not do her justice. She's so kind and funny and smart-"
"Em." Sofia said with a little more urgency but once again it fell on deaf ears.
"Oh, and I asked dad about how he met mum and if you ask me there's still so much stuff he hasn't told me about yet and-"
Sofia nearly exploded, "Emma! Stop!"
She could hear that Emma was taken aback by her sister's tone, but she could nearly feel herself reaching her breaking point.
Emma piped up on the other end, "Why? Sofe, what's wrong?"
Sofia nearly laughed, "What's wrong? Why don't you tell me?"
There was a silence on the other end and Sofia could feel her sister's confusion.
"Uh, Sofia I don't know what you're talking about." She replied.
"Are you being serious? Emma, this isn't funny, why didn't you tell me?!"
"Tell you what?" Emma said with a hint of frustration.
"Tell me that mom's in love!" Sofia nearly snapped.
Emma scoffed loudly, "What?! Don't be stupid, mum doesn't fall in love! Not for real anyway. She hasn't a proper relationship in, well, ever!"
Sofia wasn't buying it. "Oh? Is that so? Then explain why she has a boyfriend!"
"A boyfriend?!" Emma said incredulously.
"Yeah! And they've been together for five months!" Sofia was getting more heated by the minute, "Are you seriously telling me that you had no idea? Did you keep this from me on purpose just so I would agree to your plan? Do you even care about mom and dad at all?" It all came tumbling out her mouth before Sofia could stop herself.
Emma immediately responded, trying to convince her sister that she too was clueless, "Woah! Sofia calm down! I'm telling you I had no idea that mum was even seeing anyone. I mean I don't even know his name!" She paused for a second, "How did you find out about this anyway?"
Sofia sighed, "Han told me. But mom introduced me to him today and Em, he's awful. His name's Scott and he's so stuck up and arrogant. I have no idea what mom sees in him."
There was a pause as Sofia composed herself. The silence on the other end of the line revealed that Emma was processing all of this information.
"Emma, are you sure you had no idea that this was happening?" Sofia said in a quieter voice when Emma didn't reply.
"No, I didn't." Emma responded, "Sofia if I did, I swear I would've told you. You know I would."
Sofia could hear the sincerity in her sister's voice. She had a point; Emma would've told her about this. If she really knew she would've mentioned it to Sofia long before she even voiced her idea for the plan, possibly even before they found out they were sisters. In that moment Sofia knew that Emma was telling the truth; she was just as oblivious to the revelation that Jyn was in a relationship as she was. She silently scolded herself for flying off the handle like that but continued speaking anyway.
"Okay. I believe you," And Sofia could hear Emma breathe a sigh of relief. "Sorry for losing it there but, Em, we have to do something about this." She said in a more pressing voice.
"Well, then sabotage them, do whatever you have to do. If this Scott guy is anything like the other guys I've seen mum with over the years, he shouldn't last that long anyway." Emma replied in a somewhat careless tone, as if she was trying to end the conversation quickly.
"I'm trying to come up with something but I'm at a slight disadvantage. I've only known the woman for a day. Emma, you have to come out here with dad and help me."
Emma nearly laughed at the suggestion, "Are you kidding? Sofia, I only just got here!"
"But Em, this is serious." Sofia pleaded.
"No. I can't. I won't. I want more time with dad." Emma said sternly.
"Well can't you- wait, what is that noise?"
All of a sudden, a loud crackling sound could be heard coming from Emma's side of the line. It didn't sound like real interference. More like a of wrapper of some kind…
"Sofia are you there?! I can't hear you!" Emma said loudly over the crackling.
"Yeah, I'm still here-"
"I think I'm losing you Sofe, can you hear me?!"
"Emma, I can hear you, I'm still here!"
"We're breaking up!" Emma nearly shouted.
Then the crackling suddenly stopped, and a silence came from the other end.
"Hello?" Sofia said aloud, but she was met with nothing but a slight beep signifying that the phone call had ended. Emma had hung up on her on purpose.
Sofia removed her phone from her ear and stared at the screen, "Thanks for the help, Em." She sarcastically said to herself.
Sofia let out an exasperated sigh.
What the hell am I going to do now?
Sofia figured that she should at least try to get some decent sleep before the day really started, so she crawled under the covers of Emma's bed and the exhaustion finally caught up with her; she was asleep in seconds.
A few hours later, she woke up, sunlight poking through the gap in the curtains. She checked her phone and the time read: 11:34AM; At least she managed to get a few hours of sleep.
Sofia got out of bed and decided to get dressed so she could go downstairs and see if there was anything to eat, hoping she hadn't missed breakfast. Hopefully it wouldn't be as awkward as dinner was last night.
Going downstairs into the kitchen, Sofia was met with Han who was standing at the stove cooking what looked and smelt like pancakes. He glanced up and smiled when he saw her.
"Good morning." He said, as he chucked a dish towel over his shoulder.
Sofia sat down at the breakfast bar that was stationed across from where Han was cooking, "Hey." She responded.
"You hungry? I made pancakes." Han said as he plated up the pancakes, drizzling golden syrup on top of them, and pushing the plate towards Sofia.
This was met with a hungry smile from Sofia as she took the knife and fork Han offered her and cut into one of the pancakes. They didn't look like American style pancakes, they were flatter, like crêpes, but they tasted delicious all the same.
Han leaned against the counter, eating his own plate of pancakes.
"Where's mom?" Sofia asked as she swallowed a bite of her breakfast.
"Oh, she's sitting out in the summer house doing some work. She thought it'd be best to let you sleep in. She didn't want to wake you." He replied.
Sofia nodded and there was a small pause until Han spoke up again.
"Although, I think I'd be tired too if I was up in the early hours of the morning making weird phone calls from my bathroom." He didn't even make eye contact with Sofia as he finished his sentence.
She nearly choked on a mouthful of pancake. She set her fork down and took a sip of water before her food went down the wrong way.
Han could hear me?! How much could he hear?
Sofia tried not to show him that she was panicked, "Oh. You, uh- heard that?" She asked nonchalantly.
He chuckled, "Yeah. I heard that."
Sofia looked up from her plate, "What were you doing up so early?" She asked in an attempt to direct the conversation away from her.
"You know I take Chewie for a walk at 6:30AM every morning. What's your excuse?" Han asked with a slight grin.
Sofia racked her brain trying to think of a response. It didn't seem like Han knew what she had been talking about on the phone, but she needed him to get off her case.
"I was phoning a friend. From camp. Her name is Carrie, she lives in Spain. She's Spanish." The words came out in almost a jumble she was talking so fast.
Han narrowed his eyes for a second before folding his arms across his chest and standing up straight. He seemed to find this the conversation amusing and an open smile formed on his face.
"Ohhh, I get it. So, you wanted to call your friend at a time that was convenient for her because of the time difference?"
Sofia smiled to make herself look less sketchy, "Yeah exactly! Because of the time difference."
"So, you waited until it was 6AM her time? Spain is only an hour ahead of us, Em." Han said in a matter-of fact way, his eyebrows raised.
Sofia eyes widened slightly, fearing that she'd been figured out.
Say something quick!
"She likes to wake up early too." She said quickly.
Han laughed loudly at this. "Okay, I'll bite," He answered nodding his head and immediately, to Sofia's relief, he changed the topic of conversation, "Now listen, your mom told me that she wants to speak with you in the summerhouse when you're done with breakfast."
This grabbed Sofia's attention and her head shot up, "She does?"
Sofia wondered what her mom wanted to talk to her about, so she quickly threw the rest of pancakes down her throat.
"I'm done." And she hopped up from her seat.
"Thanks for breakfast Han, it was great!" She called back as she made her way to the glass doors out into the garden. Before she made it there however, Chewie ran up to her barking like mad which made Sofia nearly jump out of her skin; Chewie still wasn't fooling for the switch.
I'm lucky that dog can't talk.
"God, that dog has gotten so weird." Sofia claimed as Han went to try and calm Chewie down.
Sofia then tried to open the back door by pushing it, but it wouldn't budge at all which made her screw her face up in confusion as she continued to try and push it open.
"Pull it, Em." Han instructed and Sofia pulled the door towards her, the door opening with ease.
Sofia looked at Han with embarrassment and again tried to play it off as if it was a mistake.
"Uh, sorry, I- I must've forgot," She laughed nervously. "See you later, Han!" Sofia said as she ran out into the garden.
Han watched her go with an almost concerned facial expression. He had never seen Emma act this way before, he'd certainly never seen her forget how to open the back door. He shrugged it off however as he stroked Chewie's ear.
"All that nature must've really cleared her head, huh pal?" He asked Chewie, as the big brown dog tilted his large head at Han as he petted it.
Han could only smile.
At the bottom of the garden was a small building built of a green wood; the summerhouse.
Sofia approached its double doors and saw her mom through the glass that was set in the doorframe. She sat in an armchair, reading glasses perched on the edge of her nose as she flipped through a paper document, marking things with a pen every now and again. Sofia didn't make herself known immediately as she looked at her mother. Jyn's face was scrunched up into a look of concentration, her hair falling loosely around her shoulders. Sofia smiled at her mom; she never thought she'd see her like this, or at all. She was only sitting and working but to Sofia it was the most interesting thing in the world.
Then Jyn looked up when she saw Sofia standing there and a huge smile graced her face and she gestured her daughter to come in. Sofia snapped out of her thoughts as she opened the door to the summerhouse.
"Morning, darling," Jyn beamed, setting down the document and pushing her glasses onto her head. "Did you sleep well?"
"Yeah. I slept great." Sofia replied taking a seat next to Jyn, which was a lie but it's not like she was going to tell her mom the truth.
However, Jyn didn't seem to notice Sofia's shaky answer and only smiled at her, "Good. Look I was thinking later today we could go out? Just the two of us. Perhaps we could take a walk in Hyde Park like we usually do. It's just you've been away for a while, so I figured it'd be nice to spend some time together."
Sofia softened up at her mother's suggestion right away; she couldn't think of anything else she'd rather do than be with Jyn. By the sounds of it, Emma had been having an amazing time with dad and Sofia had barely spent any time with mom since she'd got here. So, she decided that she could spare a few minutes of relationship sabotage to spend at least a couple of hours with her mom; she had been waiting 15 years for this after all.
"Yeah, I'd love to!" Sofia grinned.
Jyn returned her daughter's smile, "Great! Well, I'll just finish up this last little bit of work and then-"
A voice coming from the house interrupted Jyn mid-sentence. Sofia knew who the voice belonged to almost immediately and couldn't help but roll her eyes as she directed her attention to the man walking towards the bottom of the garden. It was Scott.
"Hello?" He said, announcing his presence in a sing-song voice.
Sofia only looked at him with annoyance as Jyn greeted him with a warm smile.
"Scott," She said, a hint of surprise in her voice. "I didn't know you were coming over."
Scott leaned on the open doorframe of the summerhouse. "Well if you knew it wouldn't be a surprise would it?"
Sofia let out a small scoff that she thought only she could hear, and Scott directed his attention to her. "Emma. Morning." The greeting smile he gave her could've almost been fake; Sofia thought it was.
She nodded in his direction not saying anything to him.
"So, what are you doing here?" Jyn asked.
"Well, I thought that the three of us could go out today and do something. Maybe we could all get something to eat?" He responded.
Sofia's eyes darted up at Scott, frowning. Did he just make it his goal to intrude on everything? There was no way she was having him tagging along with her and her mom.
But thankfully, Jyn stepped in, "Aw, I'm sorry Scott but me and Emma have already made plans to have a bit of girls day out."
Scott gave Jyn a smile that made Sofia feel ill, "Hey, no problem!" He said, holding up his hands, "We can do it another time. After all, a mother spending time with her daughter comes first."
Now Sofia really felt like she was going to be sick.
Emma had made a point of telling her that their mom wasn't into typical romantic gestures and that "sappy" wasn't her thing. Well, Scott was practically drenched in sappiness but Jyn didn't seem to care, in fact she seemed to be touched by his words, as sickly as they were.
Han was right; Scott really did have her mom eating out of the palm of his hand. Breaking them up might be harder than Sofia initially thought.
Scott carried on talking, breaking Sofia out of her thoughts.
"No, I'll leave you to it and perhaps I'll stop by later. Maybe we can all talk. About things." Scott finished, giving Jyn a rather intense look and dragging out the word "things".
Jyn gave him an inwards smile and waved as he left. His goodbye left Sofia confused.
"What was that about?" Sofia laughed, hoping maybe her mom would explain why he acted so strange as he went.
But Jyn only gave her daughter another smile, "Don't worry about it, Em. He's just a bit funny like that."
"If you say so." Sofia replied; Funny isn't the word she'd use to describe Scott.
"So!' Jyn piped, up breaking the silence, "Besides Hyde Park, is there anything in particular you want to do today? We can do anything you like, your choice."
Sofia looked at Jyn and silently decided to forget about Scott immediately and focus on having a nice time with her mom. She was not going to let Scott ruin this time with her more than he already had. Her face softened up and she smiled at Jyn, "I'd honestly be okay with anything." Sofia said.
Jyn grinned at her daughter, "I think I can come up with a few ideas on what to do."
Sofia could hardly contain her excitement at hearing those words.
"I can't wait." She said, her huge smile reaching from ear to ear.
