Chapter 10
December 19, 2015
Oswald dropped down on the sofa and wrapped his arm around Ortensia before laying his head back against the back of the headrest. "Can we just forget about decorating?" Oswald asked. "It's gonna take forever to just put the house back together."
"At least Minnie was able to put the house back on the plot," Ortensia pointed out, closing her eyes as she leaned her head against his shoulder. "And they did a good job of starting to get everything back together. Though, you're half right. Tomorrow I'll look into getting our decorations in a Presto-Box." She let out a yawn, not bothering to cover her mouth as the two sat in the quiet living room after all their friends had gone home and bunny children had gone to bed. "When is it for you?"
Oswald paused for a moment, leaving Ortensia to open her eyes and look up at him. "Oswald?" she asked, wondering if he had fallen asleep.
"We had just gotten news about Walt passing away," Oswald admitted in a quiet voice.
Ortensia rested his head against her rabbit's shoulder once more, unsure how to comfort her husband. "I'm sorry I wasn't around the first time," she offered.
Oswald started rubbing her shoulder as he mumbled, "I miss him."
Ortensia snuggled closer, resting her head on his chest so she could hear his heart beat through his fur.
"I know I hated him for a while, but…" Oswald's voice drifted off a moment. "The last time we talked wasn't pleasant. I wish he knew I was sorry."
Ortensia let out an involuntary laugh, raising her hand to cover her mouth as the sound escaped her. Oswald sat up, getting her to raise her head as see his confused look. "Sorry, you haven't gotten that far yet," Ortensia admitted with a smile. "Wait till your memory gets back to the beginning of this year. Then you'll understand."
Oswald gave her a look before resting against the back of the sofa again. "I just wish all my memory was back. I'm still missing, what? Fifty years?"
"You're more than half way here," Ortensia said as she snuggled back into his chest. She paused as her mind reminded her of something. "Shoot, tomorrow's Sunday."
"Hum?"
"Just realizing what day of the week it was," Ortensia admitted. "Hopefully by tomorrow you'll have your memories back. At your pace, you should be caught up by at least Monday."
"I hope so."
"And I'll be by your side, I promise," Ortensia said, reaching up to give Oswald a kiss on the cheek.
Oswald smiled down at her, leaning his head down to rest against her forehead. "Thank you."
