Chapter 10
Axe
After having to get out of the land cruiser, they (Blade, Star, Ringo, Maggie, Balzac, and Kurumu) ride in the specialized jeep with 2 trailers of tekno-suits behind it. Pegas also follows behind using light thrusters while in robot mode. Ringo is driving. Blade keeps a serious look the entire ride and seems to be reflecting on fighting with his previous mentor.
Kurumu crosses her arms and glares at Blade.
"Are you sure about this, Blade?"
"Of course, I'm serious. What do you think we've been trying to track Axe down for?"
"It feels more like he's been toying with us, in my honest opinion." Star says with a hint of sorrow.
Kurumu points to Star. "Exactly. He could be leading you right into a trap."
"Do you think I don't understand that? Do you really think I'm going into this without thinking that this could be a trap? What other choice do I have, Kurumu. I need his crystal."
"I just don't want you losing your head over this obsession over that!" She shouts at him.
"You know all too well that is my best hope of getting to Darkon."
"But you will be facing your teacher. Are you sure you can even beat him?"
"It's not a question of if I can, it's a matter of I have to."
"Not to butt in, but he has kicked our tails at every turn. Trying to go at him alone won't be easy. We should stick with numbers." Ringo chimes in.
"Ringo, I'm kind of with you on this, but at the same time I'm not. Having us around is like having a couple extra flies around. We haven't been able to do shit to a Teknoman." Balzac says.
"At least take me, Blade. You know I can help." Demands the succubus.
"I'm still not sure if you can actually do any real damage to a Teknoman."
"We're a team, aren't we?" she adds.
"Yes, Blade, we are a team." Star also says.
"This is between me and him." Blade announces in an irritated tone.
"I'm going to say this now, and I am sure I can speak for pretty much everyone, we aren't going to just stand back and watch you carry everything on your shoulders alone. Our asses are on the line just as much as yours. We are a team. We are friends. This is what we've got." Kurumu pleads.
Blade just sits there and doesn't say another word to retort he just closes his eyes with his arms crossed.
"Are we even still going the right way?" Ringo asks.
"Yes. I feel him calling to me."
As he says that, the right side of the vehicle they were riding in slips into some watery and mushy ground. The slip jerks everyone around slightly, but no one falls out.
"Ugh, Ringo!" Maggie shouts in an annoyed tone.
"Guys. I think we've got a problem here." Announces Kurumu.
"Well that's just great." Balzac retorts.
"Great. If you broke it, then I'm going to have to fix it." Maggie adds.
"Let's move it." Star orders.
Ringo shifts gears and starts trying to get the vehicle out to no avail with all of the weight holding it down.
"Man, we are really stuck. Even our 4-wheel drive isn't going to get us out of this muck. It looks like we are at the end of the line." Says Ringo.
Blade instantly climbs over the vehicle and begins walking forward.
Star reaches out and calls to him. "Blade, wait!"
"Stay here." He retorts without looking back.
'Sorry Star. I can't let you or anyone else get involved.' He thinks to himself.
"Where are ya going?" Asks Ringo.
"Where do you think?" Kurumu thinks as she looks out to her mate of fate.
"Hey, Wait up!" Ringo and a couple of the others shout as they start to go after him.
"I'll be back!" Blade shouts back as he runs off.
"Don't go alone!" Shouts Star.
The distance between them grows longer and a thick smog starts to fill the area.
"You're not getting away that easily." Kurumu mutters and she sprouts her wings and tail. She quickly fries off after him.
"I'll keep an eye on him, Star. You guys get your shit together and meet up with us." She tells her friend and comrade as she flies by.
'Be safe. Both of you.' Thinks Star as she clenches her fist in front of her heart.
"Come on guys. We need to catch up to them!"

Blade finally stops running when he gets right in front of a cathedral. The cathedral no longer has a beautiful glow to it. Instead, it is shrouded in the vapors that the plants give off and it is also surrounded by them. The front of the cathedral has two doors. There are also two towers at either side of the main entrance. Some of the glass windows are completely shattered while many have cracks in them. Also, in front of the tower to the right of the entrance is a large green stem that leads to something that resembles an eye. The stem travels up to about 30 feet.
"Alright, Axe. I'm here."
"Welcome, Blade." Axe replies back.
Kurumu watches from a small distance back, within the plants.
The doors of the cathedral slowly open and Axe comes walking out in his human form. He is tanned. He is wearing dress shoes with white pants, a navy over coat, a dark purple shirt with no buttons and had a V near the neck, and a white under shirt. His dark hair is cut short and had a peak in a front.
I am so glad you were able to come. You have no idea how long I have been lorking forward to this little get together."
"I didn't come here for games, Axe. Why did you call me here? What do you want?"
"Oh, nothing much. I know you are a busy man. So, I'll get right to the point. It's really quite simple in fact. You probably already know the answer. I called you here to either get you to come to our side, or destroy you. Come now, let's talk." After saying that, he turns and walks back inside.
Blade follows behind.
"You knew I was coming, and I knew you were here. So, now what?" Asks Blade.
They walk into the dreary cathedral. Dust and debris is everywhere. The sounds of their feet and their voices echo in what was once a beautiful place where people got together peacefully, sang, and worshipped God.
'Looking at this place is just a reminder of the destruction they have caused. If he thinks for one moment that I will turn back, then he has another thing coming to him.'
"It's really strange how things turn out. I trained your whole family to fight, but I never expected you to use it on each other. Your father is gone. Your sister is gone. Your brother . . . well . . . is not in good shape. And you, what about you, Blade? What kind of shape are you in? You've got no family. You've got no crystal. What you really need, is a good friend. Don't you think?" His old friend Goddard says to him.
As he finished his last sentence, he sits on the large stage that leads to the altar. Damaged pews and cracked arches and pillars line either side of them. Goddard crosses one leg over the other. He also gives Blade a slightly maniacal smile that could give a person a chill down their spine. He continues.
"Darkon is willing to take you back." He says to Nick, which causes him to flinch just from hearing Darkon's name.
Blade grits his teeth.
"Honestly, aren't you tired of fighting against your own future?" Goddard asks.
'Of course I am tired of all of this fighting. I want nothing more than for this nightmare to be all over. But, I will not give up my fight against Darkon and his forces. Not when I have people like Star and Kurumu to protect.'
"Listen, it will be just like before. Only better. Believe me."
"Hmph. No thank you."
"Don't be hasty. Give it some thought."
Blade grits his teeth.
"Never." He replies to Goddard.
"Never is an awfully long time."

"He's meeting Axe in a cathedral?" Ringo asks.
The group stands in front of the cathedral. Ringo and Balzac are in their Tekno-suits.
"It used to be beautiful." Star says in a sorrowful tone.
"Blade and Kurumu must be in there." Maggie announces after a quick glance around.
"I'm glad it's still standing. There aren't many left." Replies Ringo.
"Let's go." Balzac says abruptly and starts walking for the doors.
The large eye instantly moves to look at the two of them.
"Huh?" Comes from Ringo.
"What is that?" Maggie shouts.
The eye glows and purple goo shoots out at the two Tekno-suits. But, it doesn't even touch them and it flows to Pegas.
"It's after Pegas!" Balzac shouts.
Kurumu darts out from the forest of spore plants and slices at the stem that the eye is attached to with her extended nails like a sword. A shriek is heard as the eye falls to the ground and the entire plant wilts away. She hovers in the air and looks down to see Pegas covered with the goo.
"Hey, a little sooner would have been nice." Ringo says to her.
"I didn't realize it was going to do that." She replies with a huff.
"Were you hiding this entire time?" Maggie asks.
"I saw that monstrosity and figured it was going to do something. I was hoping to get it before it could really do anything while it was distracted. Things with big eyes see a lot."
"So, you used us as bait?" Adds the mechanic.
Star puts her hand to her face while Kurumu shrugs.
"Are you kidding me!?" Balzac shouts aloud.
Ringo gives a shrug and a sigh." Hey, at least nobody is hurt. So, what's the big deal? Would you rather that thing keep shooting goo at all of us?"
"You're really okay with that?" Balzac asks Ringo.
"Just get him out of that stuff." Star barks.
"Alright. Balzac, let's see if we could get the indomitable snowman out of that stuff."
"Right." Balzac replies.
Kurumu flies off to an upper window to see if she could see what's going on inside.

"Blade I'm afraid that you're every bit as hard-headed as you were when I was training you. I can respect that. I admire you, and I admire your brother as well. The difference is that you're a traitor!" While shouting that last sentence, Goddard gets from his spot and begins attacking Nick.
He sends a flurry of kicks and punches at Nick as he defends himself.
"T protect your brother Saber I will destroy you!"
Nick quicksteps backwards to dodge and defend himself.
"Just like the old days, you would rather defend yourself than fight!" He shouts at Nick.
"I wouldn't count on that If I were you." Nick replies as he throws a punch at his old mentor.
Goddard grabs the wrist of the punch that Nick sent at him and throws him. Nick recovers from the throw and flips a few times to get back on his feet. He huffs a few times from the ordeal.
"Well, what's the matter? Slowing down?" Goddard asks.
They run at each other and Nick gives a low kick, Goddard jumps up and tries to return with an aerial kick, but it gets dodged as well. Goddard fakes with a punch that Nick falls for and sends him flying to the floor with a kick.
"Don't you remember, Blade? If you keep making the same moves, you'll always be beaten."
From the prone position, with his back turned to Axe, Blade leans forward onto his arms. He then pushes off with his right foot and sends his left foot into the air and manages to kick Goddard in the face. Goddard wipes the cut on his left cheek with the sleeve of his coat. He smiles at Blade.
"Well, my friend, it appears that you've learned something after all. But, then again, you always were a good student." As Goddard says that, he gets out his Tekno-crystal.
While Goddard is transforming, Blade looks to the nearby window. "Pegas!" He shouts.
He stands there and pauses while nothing happens. Nick couldn't see it, but Axe was smiling on the inside of his suit.
"I gave you every chance, Blade." He says to Nick as he swirls around his axe. "You've sowed disrespect. Now you're going to reap the whirlwind."
"Pegas!" Nick shouts again to no avail.
Kurumu smashes through a window with her arms crossed in front of her face. Pieces of glass fall over and shatter even more on the floor below.
"Blade!"
"Kurumu! What's going on?"
"There was a trap out there set up by some weird huge-eyed plant thingy. I took care of it, but not before it got some goo on Pegas. We've got to get you outta here and to him before that chicken shit of a Teknoman gets his axe on you."
"What? You took it out already? I take offence to be called a 'chicken shit.'"
She shrugs. "You are what you are." She tells Axe while swooping down to Nick.
"Even so, I won't let you get him out there." He does a very minor power up of his axe and slices in her direction.
'Oh, shit!' The succubus worries.
While he does that, Kurumu repositions her wings so that she speeds up into a dive. Blade raises his arms up and they link. She continues flying towards the doors to get out.
"You are not allowed to leave." Axe says to them. He gives a small charge to his axe.
"Watch us." Kurumu retorts.
Axe makes a swipe with his axe and a slice of energy comes from it. Since Nick is facing backwards, he sees Axe do this.
"Dodge left!" He shouts to Kurumu. She quickly veers left and barely manages to dodge the attack. However, the attack destroys the doors that they were going for. The door shatters apart and shards of it fall all over.
"Thanks for the exit, Axe." Nick says to him with a smirk. Axe growls inside of his suit.
'It matters not. I will still defeat him. I am the one who trained him after all.' Axe tells himself.

Ringo and Balzac finish blasting the last of the purple goo with their z-tron weaponry. They hear an explosion and turn quickly enough to see the shards of the cathedral doors falling everywhere. Kurumu flies out with Nick dangling below.
"Whew. I am sure glad it's you and not that other bozo." Ringo says.
As if on cue, Axe flies through the doorway with his thrusters going.
"There you go again, Ringo. You just had to open that big mouth of your." Balzac to Ringo from his Tekno-suit.
"Well, damn." Adds the pilot.
Star takes a shouting stance and cups her hands around her mouth. "Cover Blade til he transforms!"
"Don't gotta tell us twice." Ringo replies.
Maggie grabs Star's arm and begins retreating with her to a safer distance.
"But-"
"No buts, Star. Do you want to be in the way or die?" Maggie retorts.
Blade starts swinging while Kurumu is still holding onto him.
"Pegas, open interlock chamber."
Pegas turns around and the chamber opens. "Now, Kurumu!" Nick swings and they let go of each others hands. He jumps into Pegas to transform.
While he is transforming Ringo and Balzac attack and attempt to flank Axe from either side.
"Haven't you learned anything from our previous battles?" Axe asks the two of them.
"Sure, we have. We learned that you're a big pain in the ass." Ringo replies with a very sarcastic tone to his voice.
Their opponent begins charging his axe. Red sparks occur all over the axe while he charges it. Both Balzac and Ringo begin firing their z-tron weapons while charging at him. He boosts up into the air and flings his axe to the ground below. A strong explosion occurs when it hits the ground and it sends both tekno-suits flying. Both of the men inside shout out as the blast sends them to the ground.
The top of Pegas opens up and Blade flies out.
"Ringo! Balzac!"
"Ugh." Utters Balzac.
"I hate it when this happens." Adds Ringo.
"Your friends should have minded their own business. This is between me and you, Blade."
Kurumu flies over to Balzac and begins pulling him out of the battlefield. "Hey, are you alright in there?"
"Yeah . . . sure. . . . Never been better."
"Good. Now hurry up and get your ass back together so we can help Blade."
"Didn't you just see what happened a second ago? We are like tinker toys to that guy."
She also flies off to help Ringo.
"Now we can settle this once and for all, without the annoyance of your little friends."
"I don't need them to take care of the likes of you."
'I said that to him, but it's not going to be that easy. How the hell am I going to defeat the man that trained me? I wish it didn't have to be like this. Darkon turned my friends and family into my enemy, and I am the only one that defend the planet against them. How ironic is that?' Blade reflects.
'Blade, please be careful. I wish there was so more that I could do for you. I feel so helpless just watching you. Is support really enough?' Thinks Star.
"You overestimate yourself, young Student. You really think you can take me on?" He laughs a little in amusement. "I think you've forgotten exactly who you're dealing with."
"I know who you were, and I know what you've become."
Axe laughs again. "Perhaps you remember when we were on the spaceship Argos. We had just gotten into orbit when you asked me to look after your brother Cain. You recall that day you asked me to protect him?"
The memory of him talking with his former teacher comes to his memory. Blade charges at him and they clash weapons.
"Things were different back then." Blade tells him.
"Only the names have changed. I am Axe, and your brother is Saber."
"Not anymore he's not."
"Like it or not, Saber is your brother. And I have sworn to defend him. And anyone who stands in our way will be destroyed!"
His axe and Blade's lance clash over and over again.
"Including you." Axe adds.
A tear begins to come to Kurumu's eye. "Isn't there something I can do? This isn't right. It's not right that Blade has to fight and kill so many people that he holds dear to him." She reflects for a moment to the time when she bloke Tsukune out from his rage when he had become a ghoul.
'What if my powers can work on them? It's worth a try for Blade's sake. I safe my kiss for him, but I will do almost anything for him. I have chosen him as my life mate.'
While lost in her thoughts, Blade and Axe continue with their battle. Their battle rages not only on the ground, but also in the air as they both take short bursts of their thrusters and clash in passing.
While readying to charge at each other again, Blade taunts his opponent.
"Losing your touch, oh great one?"
"Didn't I teach you not to be so cocky in the middle of battle? You still have a whole lot to learn about respect."
They dash and their weapons clash once again with a small shockwave from their collision. Dust rustles up.
"Well, I won't be learning it from you."
"You have to realize we are too powerful. This is your last chance. Join us or perish."
With his last sentence, Axe hooks Blade with his axe and tosses him into the air.
"Ahhhhhh!" Blade shouts as he flies through the air.
Axe also launches his weapon at Blade, but Blade activates his thrusters with just enough time to maneuver out of the way. The axe slams into the ground. Blade goes to counterattack by doing a short burst charge, but Axe dodges his attack as well. He thrusts forward toward his axe and pulls it out of the ground.
"I hope that's not your final decision, because that would be a shame. Such a waste of good training. We could use someone of your ability."
"If I was the last human on Earth, I wouldn't join you."
"Pretty soon there won't be any humans left on earth. All that will remain will be Darkon's soldiers."
"I don't think so."
"You are trying to go against the natural order of things. It is inevitable that we will take over. This is meant to be. You cannot stop evolution."
"No, but I can stop you."
Axe laughs at him.
"You cannot win. You are out-powered and out-manned. Only a hot-headed fool would continue to fight us."
"Save the sales pitch, Axe. I'm not buying. This hot-headed fool is going to take all of you down."
"The Earth belongs to Darkon."
"Sorry, but he can't have it. It already belongs to someone else."
Axe leaps and goes to bring his weapon down upon Blade's head, but Blade lifts his lance up just in time. The power behind Axe's attack impacts the ground below Them. Blade kicks him away. He also backs up a little. He separates his lance and charges them. After charging them, he hurls them at Axe. Chey light on fire. Cables eject from Blade's wrists and attach the two halves. He blasts into the air and each half slices at the ground around Axe and fire explodes all around him. His opponent shields his face.
"Blade, you can't win against me."
"And why not?"
"Because you don't have the resolve to do what needs to be done. You want my crystal."
'Fuck!' Kurumu thinks as she realizes the truth behind his words.
Blade grits his teeth. 'I have to.'
Axe could see Blade seethe in anger, and he charges his Axe. 'That's right. Come on, Blade.' He watches as Blade comes right for him. He puts his thrusters on full blast. While making an upward attack. A large beam slices through the air and smashes into Blade. It sends him flying backwards and he crashes into the cathedral. Some bricks from the surrounding wall fall onto him.
"Blade!" Star shouts out in worry.
"Don't worry, Star. He's made of sterner stuff than that." Kurumu tells her.
Axe looks at though he was about to go towards Blade, but Kurumu flies out onto the battlefield behind him. He turns around.
"Well, if it isn't the fly. You should stay out of this little girl if you want to live."
"Shut the hell up. It's not like you'd seriously let us live long anyways even if you take out Blade."
He laughs a little. "Well. I suppose you might have a point there, but it sounded good."
Kurumu stares directly him and starts trying to make a cute pose. She even undoes the top button of her shirt to show off some of her cleavage.
As he stares at her, a thump goes through his mind. As her powers begin to kick in. He becomes more attracted to her with every passing second. He seems to start letting his guard down as well.
"You wouldn't want to hurt a beautiful girl like me, now would you?" She asks, and then she starts walking a little closer to him.
"What the hell is she doing? Seduce him." Maggie asks aloud for Star to hear.
'If she is a succubus, then . .' Star looks to Maggie. "She might very well be trying to do that."
"I was kind of joking, but you sound serious." The mechanic replies back.
A pain surges through Axe's head and he grabs it with a free hand. His other hand uses his axe like a cane to hold himself up. Darkon's voice and pre-existing mind control rings through his head.
"I don't know what you're doing, but we live for Darkon."
'Shit.' Kurumu thinks.
She goes to leap at him to get close enough to kiss him, but Axe swings his weapon at her. The spear-like tip of his axe gets impaled into her shoulder and he slams it onto the ground with her still impaled with it. She cries out it pain and struggles against the weapon, but Axe holds it tight. Despite her monster strength (along with failing strength in her left arm), she barely manages to keep him from jamming it even more through. Blood starts pouring out from the wound.
Blade gets up from the hole he had created in the cathedral. He gets up just in time to hear her cry out again in agony as Axe scrapes his weapon (and her) a few feet across the ground.
'Damnit. She must have been trying buy me time.'
"I give you credit for trying to stand up against me, but it was all for nothing. I will not take mercy on you, and you will die like the rest of your friends."
Through tears of pain, she still manages to look up at him and retort.
"Like hell you will, you piece of shit!"
Blade fully blasts his thrusters and charges at Axe with his lance. Axe looks over his shoulder.
"Sly girl." He mumbles just before he gets impaled with Blade's lance.
The lance goes completely through the back of Axe's side and through the front. He looks down at the lance and sees he blood dripping from it. He grips onto it.
"I taught you well, kid. Looks like a little too well. But, you're not going to get my crystal. If I can't have it, nobody is going to have it." While saying this, Axe begins to self-destruct.
A red glow emanates from Axe. Realizing what Axe was doing, Blade looks all around him at him at his friends.
'If he self-destruct with everyone so close, they'll all die.' He puts his thrusters on full blast and flies strait up. 'I have to make it. I can't lose anyone else.'
"Pegas, protect Kurumu and the others."
"Affirmative." The Tekno-bot replies.
Ringo and Balzac manage to barely get their Tekno-suits to move.
"Pegas, just take care of Kurumu. Balzac and I got the others." Ringo tells Pegas.
Axe and Blade tangle in the air. Axe manages to grab a hold of Blade.
A blue laser blast flies through the air and hits the two of them, but mostly hits Axe. Axe loosens his grip on Blade, and Blade thrusts him up. He then breaks away from Axe as he explodes. The shockwave sends Blade crashing to the ground.
After the debris finishes falling from the explosion, Star takes off to check on Blade and Kurumu. Blade is unconscious. Kurumu is barely conscious herself. She is also very pale and covered in her own blood.
"Let's get Blade back into Pegas before his time limit!" Star says to the others while rushing over to Kurumu.
Kurumu tiredly looks up at Star. "I'm sorry. I tried."
"There's nothing to be sorry about, Kurumu. You did good."
"Did we at least get the crystal?"
"Don't worry about that right now. We need to get you taken care of."
A jeep similar to their jeep drives over that has a trailer that has a large black laser cannon on it pulls up with some familiar men on it to the group. One man in particular is wearing an orange combat suit with some mild armor over his shoulders and chest that almost resembles football gear. His left eye is closed from a previous injury.
"O'Rourke! Is that you?" Star asks.
"It sure it, lass." He says with an Irish accent. "Sorry we didn't get here sooner. "We heard you lads needed a wee bit of help from commander Jamison."

A/N: Thank you for reading another chapter of my fanfiction.
In the anime, Axe also exploded himself. I thought about it after re-watching the episode. That explosion could have killed everyone in the area. The results of when his sister (Shara) did was pretty disastrous. I figured this was a better way of handling the explosion.
