Henry was excited, but also concerned when his Mom had told him Emma would be coming by, even more so when Regina had said she would be staying for dinner. When they got home Regina sent him to his room to do his homework, while she prepared dinner. He did as he was told and went straight to him room, still concerned, he messaged Emma.
Is it true? Are you coming over?
Yeah kid. Dinner with you and your mom. Know whats shes making?
Really why? Erm probably lasagna, she puts pepper flakes in it
She wants to make things better for all of us kid.
Don't fall for it Emma. She's lying, that's what she does.
Henry. Stop. I'm coming over for dinner and I expect you to sit and listen to what you mother has to say. I'll be there in an hour. Please be nice to her! She is trying, and you need to as well.
Fine. See you soon
Putting his phone down he sighs. His Mom got to Emma first, now whats he gonna do. He can smell dinner cooking, and decided he could do without an argument about homework. Looking at his math he sighs and gets to work.
'Henry, Please can you come and set the table, Miss Swan will be here soon' as soon as the words had left her mouth the doorbell rang, moving to answer the door she could hear Henry running down the stairs.
'Hey' Emma blush's slight, feeling a little awkward.
'Hello, Thank you for coming Miss Swan' Regina states politely, noting the blonde had put a bit of effort into her clothing choice, still skinny jeans but a dark blue denim with a white long sleeve t-shirt, tucked in to show off not only her badge and gun but also her flat stomach.
'Really? Back to that?' She sighs, deflating slightly
'Sorry. Habit? Emma' She offers with a small smile 'Please come in, Henry is setting the table, dinner should be ready soon, can I get you a drink? Cider maybe?'
'Cider would be great thank you' Emma smiles widely
Dinner passes quickly with small talk about Henry's day at school and each of their days at work. Emma was stunned by how much the Mayor actually did. Meetings with contractors and builders, hospital staff, budgets, preparing for town hall meetings. It's a wonder she gets it all done! After dinner Henry takes the dishes into the kitchen and then makes a beeline for the stairs.
'Henry Wait' he hears his brunette mother's voice behind him. 'I would like to talk with you. . . and Emma'
Now he was concerned, looking at his Blonde mother, who just shrugs in return, he goes into the living room. Regina catches Emma's arm just as she turns to follow. Looking into the emerald green eyes Regina tried to commit to memory. Emma felt like Regina was staring straight into her soul, snapping out of it when Regina says 'Remember when you said you would stand by me, well now I'm going to test that, and Emma I want to be very clear. If you walk away I will understand. If you do go, I will not hold it against you, I will not think poorly of you'
Emma goes to reply but Regina has already moved past her and into the living room. What can she mean by that? Is this some kind of a test?
She follows and sits on the sofa next to Henry, as Regina had taken the single chair.
'Regina, what's going on?' Emma says with nothing but comcern, the reply comes quickly.
'I have made some mistakes in the past, and I have come to realise I will never be rid of my past, no matter where I go or how hard I try'
'Regina' Emma tries.
'Please. I need to say this and you both need to hear it' she looks pleadingly at Emma.
Emma nods. Looking at the concern etched on her son's face, that is mirrored in his brunette mothers. As they try to avoid each other's eyes.
'There are many reasons for what I have done in the past, before I got you, Henry. But no good ones for how I have treated you recently' She could see the tears in his eyes and could do nothing to stop her own from falling. 'Henry, you are right, I have been lying to you, you are right about everything'
'I KNEW IT' he screams at her as he once again runs out the room and up the stairs not even affording Regina the chance to explain.
She lets a sob escape her throat, she knew this would be hard, but it was worse than she could have ever imagined, like she could feel her heart shattering, like a mirror, but could do nothing to stop it.
'Regina' she was drawn back to the room, to the blonde that was so clearly confused and torn between finding out what the hell was going on and going to her son.
'Emma, I know Henry has told you about his theory'
Emma again just looked confused. Regina realises she needs to get this done, like pulling a band-aid.
'He is right. I am' she takes a deep breath 'I am the Evil Queen. This town is here because of me. Henry is right about the curse and well, about everything.'
The realisation dawned on Emma. This was real. This was happening. Her son was right. Regina is Evil which also meant Ruby was a werewolf and Mary. Mary Margaret was her mother, her real biological parents were right here. The whole time. They were here. She had been having an internal struggle about this information since Henry told her about the curse, but somehow hearing Regina say it outloud was confirmation enough for her to accept this was the truth, she could feel it.
Fuelled with anger and hurt she stood marching to the bottom of the stairs.
'HENRY!' She shouted. Then more quietly as he appeared at the top of the stairs 'Pack a bag'
She walked back to where Regina was sitting, 'I'm taking Henry, I don't know how to feel or what to think but I sure as hell am not leaving MY SON here with YOU' she spat.
'I knew you would leave' Regina replied coldly. Walking to the kitchen, she stayed there until she heard the front door slam. they had left. Emma, had left. Then she sent a message to Emma.
Listen to this song. When, if, you are ready. I will answer any and all questions you or Henry may have. I hope you will give me a chance.
Attached to the message was the song 'flaws' by bastille. Regina had heard it on the radio and felt such a strong connection to the words, it portrays almost exactly how she feels. Just as she sent the message, that same song came on the radio. 'There's a hole in my soul I cant fill it, I cant fill it' Regina allowed the lyrics to flow into her heart and soul, and finally she allowed all her walls to crumble down around her, slipping to the floor she wrapped her arms around herself and cried. Knowing she had lost the only two people in this world that could have cared for her.
