Chapter 10
Lorelai glanced across at her mother as they stood outside the Gilmore Mansion. "You ready, mom?" She said softly.
Emily took a deep breath before nodding. "Ready." She said quietly. She got her key out and unlocked the door. She went to open the door but had to push it quite a bit as it wouldn't open. "What is going on?" She frowned as she pushed the door with all her might. "Oh..." She said quietly as she saw many different pots of flowers on the floor by the door, which were the reason for not being able to open the door easily.
"Wow..." Lorelai said quietly.
"I didn't realise people would hear about your father so soon." She said.
"He meant a lot to so many people." Lorelai smiled tremulously looking at all the flowers.
"Yes he did." Emily said.
"Would you like some coffee, mom?" She said softly.
Emily gave her a small smile. "That would be nice. Thank you, Lorelai."
"Coffee it is then." Lorelai smiled heading to the kitchen.
Meanwhile, Rory entered the diner and went to sit at the counter. "Hey." She smiled at Jess as he poured her some coffee.
"Hey." He smiled at her. "How are you doing?" He asked.
"I'm doing ok." She said. "Well, as ok as I can be. Mom's gone with my Grandma to Grandma's house this morning."
"Ah." Jess said.
"I just hope she's ok. I hate to think of her all alone there in that big house." Rory sighed.
"Yeah it must be hard." He nodded. "Hey, what are your plans? When are you planning to go back to New York?" He asked.
"I don't know." She admitted. "I know my mom's worried that I'm not giving a great impression to them..." She sighed.
"I'm sure they will understand." Jess said.
"That's what I told her. Anyway, I want to obviously stay for the funeral but then I guess I should head back after that." Rory said.
Jess nodded. "Makes sense."
Rory glanced up at him. "What are your plans?" She asked casually.
"What do you mean?" He asked.
"I mean, well, you were in New York to meet with an editor and you were on your way back to Philadelphia before everything happened with my Grandpa and you, well, ended up here. I'm guessing you're being missed at Truncheon..." She said.
"Matt and Chris understand why I'm here." Jess said.
"I'm sure but surely you'll be needed back there at some point?" Rory said.
"What, trying to get rid of me?" He raised his eyebrows.
"What? No! No, I didn't mean..." She was saying when she saw Jess smirking. "You're teasing me." She pouted.
"Only slightly." He chuckled.
"I'm serious though, Jess. You know how much I appreciate you being here. I really do. I don't want to be the reason why Matt and Chris get annoyed with you..." Rory said.
"Well, I spoke to them last night actually and mentioned that I might stick around for the funeral and then I'll head back and they were cool with that. I've got my laptop here so I can still do some work from here." He shrugged.
"You're staying for the funeral?" Rory said, trying not to show her relief.
"If that's ok?" Jess said glancing at her.
Rory smiled softly. "Yeah. That's ok. That would actually be really nice." She admitted.
"It's decided then." He nodded. "And then afterwards, you can head back to New York and I can head back to Philadelphia." He said.
"Right..." Rory said quietly. "Going our separate ways..."
"I guess so." Jess said.
Rory sipped her coffee for a moment before glancing up at him. "Hey, did you know that New York and Philadelphia are only 97.5 miles apart?" She said casually.
"Huh." Jess said. "I didn't know that."
"1 hour 40 minutes by car." She nodded.
"Huh." He said again. "How do you know that?"
"Well...I seem to remember you know how to yahoo." Rory said.
Jess smirked slightly. "You looked it up."
Rory smirked, remembering back to the conversation they had when Jess had looked up how far Yale was from Stars Hollow. "It's not a big deal." She said.
"Uh huh." He said.
"It was only a few clicks on the computer." She said.
"You looked it up." Jess smiled.
Rory ducked her head and smiled slightly. "Ok fine, I looked it up." She laughed.
"Huh." He said.
"Is it a problem that I looked it up?" She said.
"No. No problem." Jess smirked.
Rory rolled her eyes. "Ok then." She said.
Jess brought her some pancakes a few moments later. "So an hour and forty minutes by car huh?" He said.
Rory smiled at him. "Yeah." She said softly.
"Good to know." He smiled softly, glancing at her for a moment before heading off to serve some other customers.
"Ok, so I know I'm not the best cook but I can just about manage some cheese on toast..." Lorelai said later that day as she walked in to the Gilmore Mansion sitting room to find her mom sat on the couch. "Here mom..." She said handing her a plate.
"Thank you." Emily said. "Sorry you had to do this. I just didn't see the need to have a maid today..."
"It's ok. I'm happy to do it." Lorelai smiled softly. She glanced at her mom for a moment. "What are you thinking?" She said.
"What?"
"You've been quiet since we've been here. I mean, I understand why but...what are you thinking?" Lorelai said.
"Honestly?" Emily said.
"Yeah."
"I'm thinking I don't really see this as home anymore." She admitted.
"Aw mom, if you think this was too soon, you know you're welcome at ours." Lorelai said.
"No, that's not what I meant. I...I think it might be time to sell this place." Emily said quietly.
"What?" Lorelai said stunned.
"I know it was your home as well and that's why I'm talking to you about it now but...it's too big, Lorelai. It's too quiet." She said quietly.
"Oh mom..." She said softly.
"If you really don't want me to sell, I won't. I just...this isn't home without your father." Emily admitted. She glanced at her daughter who was silent. "Lorelai?" She said nervously. "Say something...please..."
"Well..." She said slowly. "I guess I can understand why you would want to sell it. If this is what you really want, then you should do it."
"Really?" Emily said relieved.
"Really. Mom, I don't want you to be here by yourself and hate it." Lorelai said softly. "Where were you thinking you might move to?" She asked.
"Well...that's another thing..." She said. "I was hoping maybe you would be ok if I moved a bit closer to you."
"To Stars Hollow?" Lorelai said surprised.
"Before you protest, I promise I won't ever drop by unannounced. I just...well, you and Luke are back together and I'm assuming there might be talk of more kids in the future..." She said.
"Mom!" Lorelai said embarrassed.
"I know. It's none of my business but if that were to be the case, it would be nice to be closer so that I could see my grandchildren more regularly." Emily said.
"Wow, you've really thought about this." She couldn't help but laugh.
Emily smiled slightly. "I just feel like it would be nice to be closer to family. I mean, I know Rory will be in New York but you know what I mean." She said.
"You know what, that would be nice." Lorelai smiled.
"Really?" Emily said surprised.
"And you know what, mom?" She said. "Kids would be nice in the future." She said softly.
Emily smiled. "Yes?"
"Yeah." Lorelai smiled. "I mean, obviously Luke and I haven't had that conversation yet and we've only just got back together but I'd be lying if I say I've never thought about having kids with him." She admitted.
"Ok then." She said.
"And mom?" Lorelai said.
"Yes?"
"It would be nice for you to be closer so that you could be involved from the start." She said softly.
Emily smiled. "Thank you, Lorelai." She said softly.
"So she's really selling the house?" Luke asked as he handed Lorelai a beer and sat down on the couch next to her in the living room of the Crap Shack.
"Yeah, it seems pretty likely." Lorelai nodded.
"And how do you feel about that?" He said.
"I mean, it does feel weird. I know I didn't exactly have the perfect childhood there but it was still my home for so many years." She said. "But I do understand why she wants to do it. It must feel really odd being there without dad." She sighed.
"Yeah." Luke said. "Was she ok you leaving her there?" He asked.
"I offered to stay but she insisted I come home and invite you over." Lorelai smirked slightly.
"Ok, that's just weird." He chuckled.
"Well, get used to it because I feel like you have a new number one fan." She teased.
"That will never feel normal." Luke smirked.
"It was actually nice, you know. We had a nice chat. These past few days, we've opened up to each other more than we have in my whole life." She admitted. "I miss dad so much and I know mom does as well but as much as his passing hurts us all, I feel like it's made me and my mom closer, you know."
Luke smiled and put his arm round her, pulling her gently into his side and kissing the side of her head. "I get it." He said. "I'm glad." He said softly.
Lorelai smiled at him. "So, do you want to stay over tonight?" She asked.
"What about Rory?" He said.
"She's hanging out with Jess and Lane this evening at the diner apartment and then she's bunking at Lane's. I think she wants to make the most of her time with her before she has to head back to New York." Lorelai said.
Luke nodded. "Ok."
"So, you'll stay over?" She smiled.
"Try and stop me." He smiled, leaning in to give her a kiss.
