Hey al! I'm happy to see how you've all been liking these one-shots. Here's the one-shot for day 10.
Enjoy!
Santa tell me
"You do know, that Wade is watching you," Annabeth said, coming to stand next to her friend.
"I do know," Zoe nodded. It was hard to not notice. She's been catching his eyes for the past hour, since she's shown up for the annual Christmas party at Lavon's house. "I'm avoiding all the mistletoe," Zoe told her friend, sipping at her glass of wine. "I made sure to scope the place out and find all the mistletoe that our lovely mayor hung up around his place," she confessed.
"What's wrong with being caught under the mistletoe with your boyfriend?" AB asked with a frown. She didn't get it, she'd love to get caught under the mistletoe by the guy she loves.
"Is it crazy that I want to make sure he's going to be here next year? That I am not setting myself up for heartbreak in the new year?" She asked her friend with a sigh. She loves Wade, but she's seen first hand how love doesn't last.
"Honey, I get it," AB sighed, sipping on her glass of wine. "But we all know how crazy he is about you. I think it's a bigger mistake to be pushing him away," she shared, giving her friend some food for thought.
"You think that's what I am doing?" She asked with a frown. She didn't think by not purposely standing under the mistletoe, she was pushing her boyfriend away. It's a silly tradition that few even participate in.
"I don't know what you're doing, Zoe. But to me, it looks like you're pushing him away because you're scared that you won't get your happy ending with Wade. No one can be sure of that. You have to work at the relationship, that's when you know of it will all work out. He loves you this Christmas, focus on that and not on what could happen between now and then, that's what will cause you to not have him next Christmas," AB stated, leaving her alone with her thoughts.
Zoe finished her glass of wine. She didn't think she's been pushing Wade away. They've been sharing more and more with each other lately. She's been very open about things. When she's not working she spends her time with Wade. None of that screams she's pushing her boyfriend away.
"Uh oh that look doesn't ever mean anything good," Lavon stated, refilling her glass of wine.
"Pfft it's fine," she waved it off.
"Big Z, I am your best friend for a reason. I can tell when something is eating you up on the inside," he stated, setting the bottle of wine down, handing her glass of wine over. "Now I don't need all the details of things, but I can help," he offered.
"I was informed that I might be pushing Wade away," she sighed, looking around the room to see her boyfriend, talking with George, his eyes scanning the room, his face lighting up seeing her. She smiled back. She loves him, she trusts that he loves her the way she loves him.
"Is there a reason behind pushing him away?" Lavon asked, popping a cap off a bottle of beer for himself.
"No," she told her friend, breaking the eye contact with her boyfriend. "I made the comment of wanting to make sure we'll still be together next Christmas, not wanting to mend a broken heart."
"That's something we all want Big Z," he shared, coming around the counter to stand next to her. "As nice as it would be to have that reassurance, it's not something we can have. Zoe, have a little faith, that it will work out," he gave her the advice he has a feeling she's looking for.
"Thanks for the advice, Lavon," she nodded, taking her glass of wine outside, where the Christmas carols could still be heard, but she's able to hear her thoughts. Wade would find her, he's been keeping tabs on her all night, so she's certain he's taking his time walking behind her.
"Everything okay?" Wade asked, coming to stand next to her, overlooking the pond.
"I don't know," she sighed, turning to face him. "You don't think I'm pushing you away, do you?" She asked him, chewing on the corner of her lower lip.
"No," he frowned, thinking back to all of their interactions over the past few months. "Are you?" He asked.
"No," she quickly told him. "I feel closer to you than I have ever felt with anyone in my life," she shared.
"Mind telling me where you got the idea that you were pushing me away?" He asked, reaching out with his left hand to lace his fingers with hers.
"The mistletoe," she lightly laughed with how strange and bizarre it had to sound. "Everyone noticed you were watching, waiting for the perfect moment to use the excuse of a mistletoe to kiss yours truly," she lightly smirked.
"I didn't think that was a crime, wanting to kiss my girlfriend," he chuckled.
"It's not," she frowned. "It wasn't so much the kiss as it's about my insecurities," she confessed with a sigh.
"What's that?" He questioned, reaching up to cup her cheek, his thumb gently caressing the apple of her cheek.
"That we might not last until next Christmas. I love you and I know you love me, I guess I'm just worried that it won't last," she confessed her fears to him.
"We have that in common," he confessed. "I fear that any morning I'm going to wake up, and you'll be gone, back to New York, back to a life where you have someone better by your side."
"I don't know if I could find someone better than you Wade. Running back to New York every time something bad happened here wasn't my smartest move, but that's in my past. You are my future," she said.
"That's how I feel. We've both made mistakes, things we regret, but the last thing I will ever regret is falling in love with you. I'd marry you tomorrow if I could," he confessed.
"Yeah?" She asked, shocked by his confession. "Falling in love with you has been great, and I don't want there to be a day when I don't love you."
"There won't be a day, Zoe. It's us, you have to believe that," he whispered, pressing his lips against hers, feeling at home before she could reply. Her mouth moving against his was all the words he needed.
