Hak had been given a rare day off, and wasn't entirely sure what to do with himself. He had completed his morning training as usual, and had to stop his feet from tracing their path to Yona's chambers. He meandered around the castle for a little while before deciding that he should head outside for the day. Otherwise, he would just keep wandering back towards Yona.
He deposited his glaive in his room, grabbed some money, and resolutely set his path outside the palace, into Kuuto. Since he had come to Hiryuu Castle to serve as Yona's bodyguard, Hak hadn't been given very many opportunities to leave the palace, unless it was a task that required his attention as general of the Wind Tribe. Nevertheless, he had made it his duty to know the layout of the capital city, and it wasn't long before he was walking through the main shopping district of Kuuto.
It was a beautiful day, and several vendors had set up stalls outside to sell their wares. Hak didn't have anything that he needed to buy in particular, so he sauntered between the aisles, idly looking at the different items for sale. He thought vaguely of buying something to send back to Mundok. The old man was always sending him letters asking how he was doing, and if he was fulfilling his duty to the princess adequately. Maybe sending him a present would shut him up for a while.
However, the thing that caught his eye wasn't the type of present he would send to his grandfather. He was walking past a stall stuffed with trinkets when a gleam of sunlight made him turn his head. He saw that the light was catching on mother-of-pearl. Stepping closer, he saw that it was attached to the back of a hand mirror. He picked it up and examined it. The frame of the mirror was painted a dark, muted red, and accented with the mother-of-pearl set into a flower and butterfly motif. He stared down at the mirror, and unbidden, Yona's fiery red hair popped into his head.
The owner of the stall approached him, saying in a syrupy voice, "Ah, that's a very nice item, sir. Just got that in. It would make a lovely present for your woman. Just the thing for a young lady to make her feel special."
Hak felt his face flush red, but decided there was no need to correct the man. Instead he grunted and said, "I'll take it. How much?"
He spent the next several minutes haggling with the stall owner until they reached an agreement on the mirror's price. Hak handed over the correct amount of coins as the man wrapped up the mirror in a red cloth and exchanged it for the money. He gave Hak a wink and said, "Good luck, sir. Although I suspect that any young lady would be happy to receive anything from you."
This time Hak's face heated considerably, and he turned and strode away quickly. He decided that he'd had enough shopping for one day, but that it would be nice to have something to eat before heading back to the palace. He picked up some food at a few different stalls along the way, and made his way slowly back towards Hiryuu castle, munching on his treats as he strolled leisurely along.
As he ate, he pondered what he was going to do with the mirror. He hadn't really thought about it too much when he was buying it. It simply was something that suited Yona, and so he thought that she should have it. Would it be awkward to give it to her, though? He didn't want her to think that he was trying to convey anything through the gift. Although he supposed she wouldn't be wrong if she thought that he had purchased it because of his feelings for her.
Lost in his musings, he found himself standing in front of her chambers before he realized it, having long since finished off his food. He stared at the door and sighed. He supposed that as long as his feet insisted on taking him here, he might as well enter. It wasn't like he had anything else to do today, anyway. He raised his hand and knocked resolutely.
"Yes, who is it?" Yona's voice held the proper dignity of a princess as she called out.
"It's me, Princess."
Feet shuffled to the door and it was thrown open. Yona looked up at him in some confusion. "Hak? What are you doing here? Isn't it your day off?"
"Yes, it is. I came here because I was out shopping and I picked up something for you." He fished the package out of his pocket and handed it to her.
She looked at it curiously, but didn't say anything as she unwrapped it. When the cloth fell away and revealed the mirror, her eyes widened. "Oh, Hak, it's beautiful. But what is this for?"
"Well, Princess, it's a mirror. Mirrors are objects that you use to look at your reflection so you can check your appearance."
She glared at him. "I know that, Hak! I meant why did you buy it for me?"
He managed to quickly come up with an answer. "I just thought after that fiasco at your father's birthday party that you could use something like this. You know, since you seem to like walking into trees."
"Th-that was your fault! You're the one who pulled me into that alcove!"
"Yes, but you're the one who walked into a branch. I understand, it's hard to see trees. They like to jump out at people. You never can predict when they'll attack." She sputtered, and he grinned and continued, "So now you'll have a mirror to fix your hair after the next tree attack."
His words stopped her mid-rage. She tentatively stroked the mirror's edge. "Well, it is beautiful. Thank you for buying it for me." She looked up at him. "If you don't have anything else to do today, would you like to play a game with me?"
He gave her a lopsided smile. "Sure, as long as I get to pick."
With a triumphant smile of her own, Yona turned around and walked back into her chambers. "Nope, if you stay we're playing baduk."
He groaned, but stepped inside the room after her anyway. There were very few things he wouldn't do for his princess.
