Short Update

*Flashback*

The light from the computer screen shined on my face as I sat in the empty room. To my right sat rows and rows of unfinished paper work. Mako updates, Soldier recruits, all the way to weather warnings were staring at me and I knew I would never get it finished in time. The clock read 8:45 pm on the other side of my screen and I sighed, rubbing my hands fiercely down my sleepy eyes.

"Working late?" I jumped 10 feet in the air and immediately grabbed my chest, looking for the source of the voice. Rufus. I wanted to roll my eyes but held back the urge and immediately straightened my back. "Mr. Shinra, how can I help you?" The smug man raised an eyebrow and casually strolled up to my desk with an air of dominance rolling off of every step. "Don't you know you are not allowed up here after working hours?"

It was true. I had stayed later than permitted in an attempt to finish the work that I had been assigned for the day. There just wasn't enough time and the President was an unforgiving man. I blinked hard and slow at Rufus with an unreadable face before facing him head on. "And aren't you supposed to be accompanied by the turks? Haven't I heard your father tell you many times you are not to be roaming around the Shinra building unprotected?"

The young Shinra narrowed his eyes at me in annoyance. "I could fire you in a matter of seconds you know." The jerk. I knew he was up to something as soon as I saw his stupid face and decided to ignore him by turning back to my computer. Rufus Shinra is not to be ignored.

My chair was suddenly spun violently around, knocking my knee on the desk. I winced in pain but Rufus didn't seem to care. "You need to learn your place." His face was inches from mine and his hand had claimed my chin in a tight grip. I tried to turn my head away, but I was locked into an awkward position that required peering into his icy glare. "My father hired you because he was impressed with something about you….but I have yet to see anything but a pretty face." I gulped deeply and tried to regain my confidence in raising my chin.

"What do you want Rufus."

At this, he stood back to his full length and let go of my chin harshly. I remained still and glaring, waiting for some smart ass response.

"Hmmm…." With that he stuck his hands in his pockets and headed for his father's office. "I won't tell if you won't." There it was. The response I was looking for. Without so much as a glance back, he began disarming the lock. I sighed into my chair and rubbed my chin. I waited for him to disappear behind the president's door. I should have known he wasn't done with the conversation when I heard another retort float down the hallway.

"I wonder…what makes you so interesting? My old man making you secretary over others much more qualified….and Sephiroth…"

I turned quickly wide eyed towards his voice. How did he know? I hadn't told anyone about the relationship…Had Sephiroth? No…He wouldn't…Then how…?

He chuckled under his breath and left the hall in complete silence once more. It didn't dawn on me until after I had already left that he had left his handprint on my chin….
