Holding hands as they walked through San Juan, Matt laughed at the joke Gabby just made. Holding the door open for her, he couldn't stop smiling as they made their way inside the restaurant. They had spend the day at her place, mostly in bed, together. Knowing they wouldn't be together for the next four weeks, they had done their best to make up for it in advance.
It wasn't an easy evening, as Matt had to leave in the morning, his flight to Chicago leaving at nine. But tonight, it was just them together. They had walked another round around the city, a lot more pleasant than the first time. She kept telling him about the history and the culture and he eagerly listened to it.
They were lead to a table and sat down, taking the menus from the table. Sitting by the window, Matt enjoyed the sight. He was not sure if it was the fact he was here with Gabby, but he started to fall more in love with the island than when he had just arrived.
''How late do you need to be at the rental office tomorrow?''
''Eight.''
''Alright, I will be at the airport at ten past eight then,'' she said, a sad smile on her face as she wasn't looking forward to him leaving. As much as they had an amazing few days, she still didn't want to miss him now that their love was rekindling.
''Going to be tight getting to the airport before work.''
''At least you can shower at home tomorrow,'' Matt smiled, so happy he was finally able to fix it for her yesterday. Knowing he had done everything he had could to help her and make her life better here, made leaving tomorrow just a little easier.
''We should go to Loretta's when I come over, I miss their pizza.''
''Or that restaurant by the pier we went on our anniversary?'' Matt said as he thought back about that dinner.
''Wasn't that only for special occasions?''
''You coming back to Chicago is a very special occasion.'' Matt told her, his hand over hers. Knowing that he would see her in four weeks again made the fact that he had to leave tomorrow a bit more bearable.
He didn't have any illusions that she wasn't going to stay in Chicago. She was happy here and he didn't want anything else for her. But there were so many decisions to be made, it would maybe be for the best they had four weeks to think about it.
''I am excited to see everybody, see Molly's – spend more time with you.''
Enjoying their dinner, they chatted. Although things had been hard when Matt had only just arrived, it was getting better now.
Walking into the warm air of San Juan, they held hands again as they walked to the harbour. Sitting together next to each other, they looked over the water, sitting close together. She had his hand on his lap as he held it. Only now he noticed the golden wedding band around her finger, shimmering in the dim light of the street lights.
''You are wearing your wedding band again?'', Matt asked, pleasantly surprised.
''Yeah – I – we aren't divorced…''
Not knowing what to say, but so happy to see it, he kissed her, his arm around her again. Sitting together as they looked at the boats coming into and leaving the harbour, he never wanted this moment to end. Holding her so close, he was grateful for going here and the love that they stills hared between them.
Unfortunately, the next morning he did have to go back to Chicago. He was looking forward to going home. But as much as he looked forward to going to his home, the city he had missed a lot he wasn't happy about it, knowing that he would have to leave Gabby behind here. Four weeks didn't seem like a long time, but it sure felt like it.
He felt a pit in his stomach as he was making his way towards the airport. Bringing the rental car to the office, he was soon waiting for Gabby in the main hall of the airport. As he had to check out this morning, collect his stuff and bring the car away, Gabby would meet him here for their goodbye. His flight was leaving in two hours and he knew that there wasn't much time for them together.
As much as he missed Chicago and he was looking forward to coming home, he knew it wouldn't be a happy return without Gabby.
She came walking his way, looking as vibrant as ever and kissing, they sat down on one of the benches, knowing they had to say their goodbyes.
Gabby reached into her back, taking out a lunch bag.
''I picked up some snacks for you, for on the plane, I know you like these.''
''Thank you, that is really thoughtful.''
''Can you call me when you are home? Let me know how your flight was?''
''Of course, I want to know how your day was too.'', he smiled.
They knew if they were to get through the long distance for the next few weeks, they had to communicate a lot more than they had done before.
Matt laid his arm around Gabby as he knew that he had to leave for his plane soon. He was nervous, knowing that he still had to say goodbye.
''I don't want to leave, but I have to head to the gate soon.'' He said as he got up and their wrapped their bodies into a hug, neither of them wanting to say goodbye. They knew they had to though. Matt had thought about extending his furlough and staying a little longer, but knew that he would need some time off when Gabby came over in four weeks as well. Besides that, he had had no way to know that meeting up with her again was going to be this successful and full of love.
''You really have to go?'', she groaned as she had her head against his chest. She had not been sure what to feel when he had arrived and knew she had been weird the first few days. But all the feelings and love for him had come flooding back. She was not sure what they were going to do, but they had four weeks to still work that out.
Kissing her on top of her head, he caressed over her back, Gabby still pressed up against him.
''I love you all the way from here to Chicago.'', she said, her voice cracking as she pressed her body even closer against his, not wanting to leave his embrace.
''No, I love you to the moon and back.'' He whispered in her ear, still holding her. As much as he had been so nervous to come here, it had been so good. He knew he was going to miss here so much. At least they knew that they were going to see each other in 4 week again.
Holding each other for just a while longer, Matt knew he had to go to make his plane. Breaking up their hug, they shared another kiss.
''Hey, it's only for four weeks, we are going to be okay.'', Matt told her as he looked at her crying face. Wiping the tears away with his thumbs he kissed her again.
As hard as it was to see her cry, it meant a lot, knowing in what a rough shape their marriage was and that they had not been in contact for weeks. Even though it was hard to say goodbye, they would at least be in contact and they knew it was only for four weeks. Even then they still had a lot to work out. But he just hoped that in four weeks, their reunion would just be as happy as the last few days had been.
There was a lot to think about for them both in the next few weeks and they had to work out how they were going to make this work.
Letting go of her face, he kissed her once more, knowing that he had to leave and it wasn't going to be any easier.
''From here to Chicago…''
''…and to the moon and back.''
