15 weeks pregnant

"Hey," Kathleen says as she enters Fran's Diner and notices Sam at one of the booths.

"Wow, look at you," he says jokingly as she gives her a hug. "You actually looked knocked up."

She just sticks her tongue out at him as they sit down in the booth. "You are not supposed to make fun of pregnant women," she says. "Didn't Zoe teach you anything?"

"That was so long ago, plus I got to get in my jokes while I can," he says as a waitress hands them each a menu. "Who knows what is going to happen in the coming months."

"You are going to miss everything," she says as turns to the waitress. "He'll have a coffee, lots of sugar and cream and I'll have a very berry smoothie."

"Coming right up," the waitress says before leaving the two.

"Are you working today," he asks as he looks over the menu.

"Nightshift, week three of eight," she says as she looks through the options. "You talk to your sister about being under?"

"For a few minutes, she is still not pleased," he says as he puts the menu down. "She thinks I need to settle down and work more normal hours."

"It's not for everybody," she says as the waitress brings their drinks over.

"You ready to order," the waitress asks as her eyes roam over Sam.

"She'll have the vegetarian stir fry and I'll have the shepherd's pie," Sam starts as he ignores her. "We'll take an order of mozzarella cheese sticks and deep-fried pickles to start."

"Coming up," the waitress says before disappearing.

"Not hitting on anyone," she asks as she looks at him.

"What's the point," he asks as he looks at her. "Enough about me, what are the newest developments in your life?"

"The wedding details are all complete," she says as she sips her smoothie. "We are looking at December 5. I've already ordered my dress but am going in the week before to make any alterations. Melanie is already on my case about when I am planning on taking maternity leave."

"As late as possible knowing you," he says as he smiles at her. "You are that stubborn."

"I am thinking for around 37 weeks. Then I'll stay off till the New Year and start back up and consider either daycare and seeing if I can sweet talk my dad into retiring early."

"Good luck with that one," he says as their starters arrive. "Is Callaghan going to take anytime off?"

"He's talking about taking six weeks or so. Taking the week off before my due date and then staying off till the new rookies startup. Which would be the start of a new rotation."

"That makes the most sense. How is the whole night rotation going for you?"

"Not too bad, a little bit easier as I have more energy. Oh, Luke and I did decide on one thing that we wanted you to know before you go under."

"Should I even ask?"

"That you would be the godfather. We need someone who will balance out the wackiness of Gail's ploys."

"Really me," he asks as he looks genuinely shocked.

"Come on, who else do I count on more than almost anybody else in my life," she asks as she snacks on a pickle. "How many times have you come to my rescue?"

"Not all the time," he says as he frowns.

"For the hundredth or whatever time, it was not your fault," she says as she looks at him. "It was a freaky coincidence is all. It could have been Luke or Steve that dropped us off and it still went down that way."

"Still," he says as their food is delivered. "What if we weren't able to get there in time?"

"Sam, stop beating yourself up for it," she says as she looks at him. "Do you remember the first time we met?"

"I was a week fresh from being cut loose," he says as he begins to reflect on it.

Sam and Jerry had just pulled up to a house party on High Park Ave. The division had gotten multiple noise complaints regarding the party. It was one of their first night shifts after being cut loose and they were assigned to either break the party up or have them keep the noise down. From the street they could a ranch-style house with what looked like a hundred high school students around the property, there were cars everywhere along the street.

"Great," Jerry curses as they get out of the car. "Just what we need some stupid high school party with idiotic teenagers."

"Hey, let's just get in and get out," Sam says as they start towards the house. "If we see any alcohol, we threaten to bring them all in, if the party doesn't break up."

"If we see drugs," Jerry asks as they reach the front door.

"We arrest," Sam says as they make their way towards the living room. He lets out a loud whistle. "Who is in charge here?"

The teens all look at each other before a teenage male appears. "It's my house," he says as he looks at the two of them. "What's the problem officers?"

"We have been getting noise complaints all evening," Sam starts as he looks around. "Now we can handle this one of two ways?"

"Which are," the teen asks in a bored tone.

"You can bring the noise down or my partner and I can look through this place and start arresting anyone we see drinking," Sam replies as he looks around.

"I am going to say those red solo cups are not filled with soda pop," Jerry casually mentions.

"That's going to get you and your parents in a whole lot of trouble," Sam finishes. "So what option are we going with?"

"I'll turn down the music," he says as he motions to a buddy of his near the sound system. "Sorry for any inconvenience."

"Good, we don't want to come out here again," Jerry mentions as the two of them leave. "That wasn't too bad."

Sam shakes his head as they walk back to their cruiser, that's when they notice two teenage girls standing near the edge of the sidewalk. One was rubbing the other one's back as she was hurling. "Maybe not," Sam says as he points to the teenagers. "It would be wrong for us, not to make sure they were okay."

"True," Jerry says as the two being to walk over to them.

"Definitely, not your smartest idea," a sixteen-year-old Kathleen says as she looks at her cousin. "How the hell are we supposed to get back to my house without calling someone."

"Don't you dare," Gail says between hurls?

"Let me call Steve," Kathleen pleads as she looks at her. "He did way worse when he was our age."

"He'll call my parents and you know it," she says as she starts hurling again.

"Are you two okay," Sam asks as he and Jerry approach them. "It seems like your night isn't going as planned."

"We're fine," Kathleen begins. "She just ate something that isn't agreeing with her."

"What she," Gail starts before vomiting all over Sam and Jerry's shoes.

"Crap," Kathleen mutters as the scent of alcohol can be detected.

"IDs please," Jerry says sternly as Sam begins to mutter under his breath.

"Look officers, can't we chuck this up to a bad night," Kathleen tries as she looks at them. "I mean it's got to be a slow night if they are sending you out to a house party."

"IDs," Sam says as he looks at them. "Or we can take a trip to the division."

"You don't want to do this," she says before bowing her head as she reaches in her purse and produces her ID, before grabbing Gail's and handing them to him.

"We'll see about that," Jerry says as he looks at the two IDs. "Crap. Sam, we may have an issue."

"Underage consumption," Sam says before turning to Jerry. "Public intoxication."

"We have Kathleen Boyd and Gail Peck," Jerry reads off the IDs.

"Did you say, Boyd and Peck," Sam stops and turns to look at him? He then turns and looks at the girls. "As in Donovan Boyd and Steve Peck?"

"My dad and cousin," Kathleen says as she looks at them. "I told you didn't want to do this? Look, how about we chuck this up to a misunderstanding and we all forget about it."

"Keep dreaming," Sam says before looking at them. "Let's go."

"Sam," Jerry starts.

"No one gets special privileges," Sam says grabbing their girls by the arms and leading them towards the cruiser. "Remember."

"Okay," Jerry says as he opens the back of the cruiser.

"Uh, what did I do wrong," Kathleen asks after Gail is placed in the cruiser with a bag. "I'm not drunk. Test, I am stone-cold sober."

"We'll see about that when we get down to the station," Sam says as he gestures to the car. "Get in."

"Fine, but don't blame me when you are on desk duty for the rest of the month," Kathleen says as she slides into the vehicle.

"I hope she's wrong," Jerry says before they both get in and drive back towards the division.

It's about a ten-minute ride when they pull in. They quickly get the girls out of the car before walking them into the booking area.

"Hey, Ollie got a couple of minors here," Jerry says as he looks at their friend. "We have Gail Peck and Kathleen Boyd."

"Okay," Oliver says as he begins the paperwork.

"Is Staff Sergeant Boyko around," Kathleen asks as she looks at the three of them.

"He is, " Oliver says as he fills in the paperwork. "Why do you ask?"

"I'm sure, he would love to know why his goddaughter is being put into a holding cell," Kathleen mentions as she looks sweetly at them.

"Uh," Oliver says as he looks over at the other two.

"She was found at a party with alcohol," Sam says as he gestures to the other girl. "She is obviously drunk and therefore broke the law."

"I'm going to go get him," Jerry says as he looks at Oliver. "Try not to let Sammy kill her."

"Deal," Oliver says as he leads Gail over to the bench as Kathleen and Sam are having a staredown.

"Look I don't care who you have connections to, you broke the law," Sam says as he looks at her.

"Being at that party wasn't breaking the law," Kathleen retorts as they notice the door opening again. "Daddy, a little help."

"Officer Swarek, should I ask why my niece and daughter are here," Donovan says as he hands a prisoner over to Oliver. "Book him on multiple charges of possession and intent to distribute."

"Yes sir," Oliver says as he leads the male prisoner into a holding cell.

"Officer Barber and I found them at a house party on High Park," Sam starts. "We were called in due to multiple noise complaints and talked to the host and on our way back to our cruiser noticed your niece puking her brains out. She reeked of alcohol, so we brought them in."

"At what point did it not occur to you to take her to a hospital," Donovan asks as he looks at Gail. "She could have alcohol poisoning or had her drink tampered with. Did you call it in to dispatch, that there was alcohol at an underage party?"

"No sir, we did notice any alcohol when we were in the residence," Sam says as he looks at the girls. "We didn't even consider the possibility that she hadn't consumed it voluntarily."

Just then the door opens, Jerry and Boyko walk into the room as Oliver is returning.

"Ah, Donovan I see you have this under control," Boyko says as he glares at Sam.

"Dispatch units to that party and have them contain all occupants," Donovan begins as he looks at Boyko. "Have the officers test for date rape drugs and to keep their eyes open for anyone who may seem intoxicated and have them checked out."

"Right away," Boyko says before disappearing back into the main part of the station.

"Do you two even know what the difference is between intoxication, alcohol poisoning or someone who has been slipped a date rape drug," Donovan asks as he looks at them.

"No sir," the two both say.

"Exactly, rule one of breaking up parties," he starts as he looks at them. "Always have the victims checked out, no matter if you haven't seen any alcohol or drugs."

"Yes sir," the three of them say.

"Was Gail drinking," Donovan says as he turns to his daughter. "She won't be in trouble if she was."

"I don't know," Kathleen says as she looks at him. "She went one way, I went to find Andrew. I was ready to leave about 30 minutes later and I found her like this, with a group of jocks from school."

"I want you two back at that scene," Donovan says as he turns to them. "I want to know every possible substance on that property. All prescription, all illegal and every type of alcohol."

"Yes sir," they say as they look at each other.

"Who's party," Donovan says as he looks at his daughter.

"Richie Warren," Kathleen says as she bows her head.

"Any relation to Bobby Warren," Sam asks as he looks at her.

"Who's Bobby Warren," Jerry asks as both Sam and Donovan share a look.

"What were you doing there," Donovan asks as he looks at his daughter. "I've told you a hundred times to stay away from the Warren brothers."

"I didn't know it was their house," Kathleen starts. "Andrew invited me and Gail got an invite from a group of girls from the cheerleading team. When I figured it out, I told Andrew that I had to go."

"Bobby Warren is a known dealer for Village Crew," Sam says as he looks at Jerry. "They are known for supplying the city with everything from uppers to steroids. Mainly into selling to high school and college students."

"You know your gangs and narcotics," Donovan casually mentions. "What was Andrew doing there in the first place?"

"He tutors Richie sometimes," Kathleen replies.

"You are grounded and I don't want you seeing him anymore," Donovan says before turning to Oliver. "Tell Boyko to send them to the hospital and call my sister-in-law. Explain to him that the party may have a connection to the Village Crew."

"Yes sir," Oliver says as he picks up the phone.

"Daddy," Kathleen starts.

"Not now, we will talk about this when I get off shift," he says before turning to Jerry and Sam. "Let's get going?"
