Mitchum leaned back in his desk chair and took a moment to close his eyes, weariness of the last 24 hours engulfing him. Finding out he was going to be a grandfather again excited him but then he thought about Rory being in the hospital and the reason for her being in the hospital. He had known for years that Shira was a heartless bitch, but he would have never thought she stoop to this level. The thought that his own wife conspired to keep their son away from his child disgusted him. While he would admit to himself that he had done some questionable things over the years and was never the best of fathers he couldn't imagine ever inflicting this type of pain on his own children. Now he could only hope that Shira listened to his warnings and stayed away. But after being married to her for so long he knew her manipulations had no limit, so he ensured there were private investigators tailing her and her new apartment was infested with listening devices to try and keep ahead of any of her schemes.
Then there was the Odette situation. He never liked the girl and he regretted allowing Shira's set-up. When Shira first proposed it, he hoped it would force Logan to finally go public with Rory and put his playboy antics behind him. He wanted more grandchildren and thought if Logan was pushed into that corner he would fight for Rory like he did all those years ago, but he folded and went along with the dynastic plan. Now, he had to deal with the aftermath of Logan's impending fatherhood and Odette hiding the fact. Immediately after Logan had left the previous night he contacted his PR team to try and come up with a way to end the engagement and not paint either Logan or Rory in a bad light or cause scandal to surround their child.
This was a mess and the best solution that anyone could come up would paint Odette in a bad light. While he didn't care about the bad press following her, he knew her father could possibly fight back. He was brought back to the present when his secretary buzzed though.
"Mr. Huntzberger… Mr. Laurent is here…"
Before words were completely out of her mouth his door swung open and he was faced with a very pissed off Frenchman.
"Would you care to explain why I got a visit from my crying daughter telling me the engagement is off!" Henri Laurent yelled.
Mitchum looked behind him and saw his cowering secretary. "Marci its fine, please close the door and cancel my meetings for the rest of the day." She quickly nodded and closed the door as he stood up. "Henri, please have a seat."
"No! I want to know why Odette is crying about Logan being a cheating bastard and calling off the engagement," the Frenchman continued as he glared at Mitchum.
He sat back down in his chair and studied the other man for a moment before answering. "Odette has some nerve complaining about Logan and another woman when from what I can tell she has been sleeping with at least 4 different men over the last few months."
"How dare you accuse my daughter…" Henri started but Mitchum quickly silenced him with a pointed look.
"Don't tell me you actually believe that Odette was faithful," he said with a disbelieving scoff. "This was a business arrangement and nothing more. They rarely spent time together and as for the PR boon we expected to get... Well that never happened since Logan avoided ever getting photographed with her. The ending of this arrangement is best for everyone."
"Its not best for Odette," Henri countered and sat down. "He promised her things, a place in society a comfortable life. And now he has knocked up some whore that is making demands!"
Anger flashed across Mitchum's features and he took a moment to control it before responding. "He never promised her anything. Shira arranged this and Logan went along with it much to my disappointment. Yes, I wanted the papers but the relationship…" Mitchum sighed. "And this arrangement would have been over months ago if Odette hadn't conspired to keep Logan's upcoming fatherhood a secret. We could have handled this in a more civilized way and the child's mother isn't making any demands."
Henri tried to control a shocked look. "What do you mean Odette kept the child's existence from Logan?"
"The mother contacted Logan about four months ago to tell him, immediately after she found out she was pregnant. Odette got ahold of his phone and deleted the messages and blocked her number. She sent him and email which Odette also deleted, then sent your lawyers to threaten her. They even went as far as giving her a check for an abortion." Mitchum stated his voice getting progressively louder. He took a deep breath and debated on if he should say anything about Rory. "Your daughters actions caused the woman of my unborn grandchild to end up in the hospital and on bedrest almost losing the baby."
"My Odette would never…" Mitchum cut him off by pushing a folder towards him. Henri picked it up and flipped through the pages, his face becoming pale. "How did Logan find out about the child?"
"That does not matter," Mitchum firmly replied. "What matters now is how we go forward." He picked up another stack of papers and handed them to Henri. "Those pictures will start making their rounds in a few hours."
"You will not paint my daughter out to be the villain by trying to publish photos of her and another man!" Henri yelled.
"Those pictures are of her with her yoga instructor and from what I have discovered they have been together for over a year. And trust me when I say you don't want to see the other pictures we have of her with either him or other men. Tomorrow a statement will be released by Logan stating that he is happy that she has found love again after they decided to call off the engagement late last summer. A press release was not released at that time due to them not wanting to interfere with HPG's purchase of the European papers owned by Durant International. He wishes her the best in the future."
Henri internally fumed at this development. "You still expect me to sell those papers to you? The agreement we reached was that they would essentially a wedding present from my family to the happy couple."
Mitchum shrugged. "You don't want the papers, HPG is willing to buy them for a reasonable amount. If you don't want to sell…"
"And if I do not agree to the narrative you are painting? If we decide to go public that Logan had affairs and has knocked up some woman?" Henri fumed.
Mitchum opened a file on his computer and then turned to Henri, "then this clip will be made public."
Odette's voice filled the room… "You had a meeting in the home office and left your phone in the kitchen. That bitch wouldn't stop calling your phone and texting desperately asking you to call her, so I blocked her number and deleted her texts. In your phone you have her as Ace and I asked Shira about her and was told it was probably your desperate college girlfriend who was a failed journalist. Shira thought she had already gotten rid of her but Mitchum told her that he saw you two at a restaurant, so she suggested I move in with you. You are mine and you need to be faithful to me. Then she sent you an email professing her love, another desperate attempt to get you back but she said she was pregnant, so we decided to have my lawyers handle it. I did what I needed to do. I handled the situation, I gave her money for an abortion and that slut was out of the picture. Shira even went to her house and found out she was in the hospital. We will pay her more money, I'm sure my father would be fine with it and she will go away. We will get married."
Mitchum watched Henri's face as he listened to the cold-hearted voice from earlier that day. From the look on his face he had no idea what his daughter had concocted with Shira and Mitchum.
"This also implicates your wife," Henri finally stated attempting to get back some control. "You wouldn't embarrass your own family that way."
"The wife that I served with divorce papers after the meeting today?" Mitchum coolly replied. "I have no problem having the world know that she was involved with a scheme to hide her grandchild from its father. And if I release that recording… I also release this and many more like it." Mitchum picked up a picture of Odette that showed her in a very compromising position and handed it to the other man. Henri's face went white and Mitchum stood up and went to pour them both a glass of scotch. As he got back to the desk, he placed Henri's glass in front of him and took back his seat. After taking a long drink he stated, "there are more of those and some of them are a little more… graphic."
Henri picked up his drink and took a few large gulps. "We will agree to your first proposal. But I will not sell you my papers."
"I didn't think you would," Mitchum replied. "Both Logan and Odette did numerous questionable things throughout this sham. Logan just wants to put this in the past and as much as he despises Odette right now… we decided it was best to try and ensure both parties left this arrangement with as little scandal as possible and to not cause any additional stress to the child's mother while she is already suffering from a difficult pregnancy due to Odette's actions."
"I agree," Henri slowly replied. "I cannot think of a way out of this that wouldn't cause scandal. I will let Odette know of the plan. I assume that if she tires to cause any waves the other pictures will be released along with the recording?"
Mitchum nodded and Henri went to put the papers down on the desk. "Keep them," he stated. "I have plenty of additional copies."
A few minutes after Henri had left his office, Mitchum pulled out his cell phone and pulled up Logan's contact info and sent a quick message. Henri was just here. Odette should not be a problem. The pictures will be posted within the hour. He then pulled up the contact info for his private security and typed a message O should no longer be an issue. Keep tails in place for time being.
The events of the past few days were weighing heavily on him and he didn't know what he should do next. Over the past few years he often wondered what would have happened if that disastrous first meeting between Rory and his family had gone differently, or if the internship had gone differently. Richards words that he had destroyed Rory often floated through his mind as he thought of her and it was true. While he now knew he should have expressed his thoughts differently it wasn't how he was, he was blunt but she was his sons girlfriend and he should have realized that his criticism could have negative impacts on that relationship. He stood by his words that she didn't have it… but he should have worded it differently. She didn't have that fire to dive into a war zone or fight for late breaking stories, she had a more thoughtful approach and needed to break out of her shell. There were times after that disastrous internship that he should have tried to make things better, but he never did.
When Logan and Rory reconnected, he knew, Logan had suddenly had that spark again and was engaged and took work more seriously. His exploits were further apart, and he later discovered it was because of Rory he was happy and he waited for Logan to tell him they were together again, tell him that they were serious but it never happened and then he agreed to Shira's plot. Thinking about all the things he should have done differently was not going to help this situation. Right now, he needed to ensure Shira behaved and that Odette was out of the picture, he would protect his son, grandchild and Rory Gilmore as much as he could. The couple deserved the support and while he was never a great father, he hoped he could be a decent grandfather.
Knowing that he wouldn't get any work done today he called his secretary and told her to cancel and reschedule everything he had for the day.
Finn walked back into the hospital with his arms filled with bags. After speaking with a nurse he was able to get a list of foods she would be able to eat and headed to a favorite café of his and got her a variety of things that he knew tasted good and hoped she would enjoy. The nurse had let it slip that Rory would hopefully be released the following day so he didn't want to go overboard on the gifts, that could wait until she returned home. He paused at the nurses desk and dropped off a bag filled with pastries before walking to her room. Gently he knocked and when he heard a soft "come in" he opened the door.
"Hello love," he stated as he walked into the room. "I come bearing food," he stated as he lifted the bag.
"Thank you, Finn," she replied in a tired voice. "Grandma I'm not sure if you ever met Finn Morgan."
Emily smiled at Rory, "we met briefly in the hallway earlier and I remember him from throughout the years."
"It's nice to see you again Mrs. Gilmore," Finn acknowledged as he walked closer to the bed and placed the bag on a tray table next to her. "I hope you're hungry. I got extra for you as well Mrs. Gilmore."
"I am," she stated with a small smile as he pulled out a fruit salad, regular salad, chicken and vegetables and a slice of pie. She laughed when she saw the dishes and moved the tray closer to her so she could eat the chicken. "Thank you again. Hospital food sucks and I am starving."
"Thank you Finn," Emily replied, "but I ate not long ago."
He nodded to Emily, "well I have extra pie," he said with a smile then turned to Rory "are you okay?" he asked tentatively.
She let out a deep sigh, "it was an anxiety attack that caused my body to start contractions. They were able to stop me from going into labor, but I need to limit stress." She glanced up at him and gave him a sad smile. "Stress is something that I haven't been able to avoid this entire pregnancy and I doubt its going away now."
"I was surprised I haven't seen your mother here," he tentatively broached and heard Emily's sharp intake of breath.
"You won't," Rory stated plainly. Finn looked at her questioningly, but Rory shook her head. "You won't see her here and I doubt anyone would contact her to let her know I was admitted again." She closed her eyes briefly and took a few deep breaths. "So, tell me how work is?" Rory requested as she opened her eyes and tried to change the subject.
He started telling her about the changes he was looking at making changes to the hotel group operations and how he wanted to appeal to a more youthful cliental. He told her stories about some of his recent trips and was happy when Rory laughed with him. Soon she had finished eating and had fallen asleep.
"Mrs. Gilmore," Finn started as he looked at her hesitantly. "I don't know if you would tell me but, what happened with Lorelai. I remember Rory telling us stories about how close they were."
Emily sighed and studied the young man. "It is not my story to tell," she replied slowly as if thinking about her words. "Rory and Lorelai had a… difference of opinions. After Rory's first stay in the hospital Christopher and I stepped in and helped her. I signed off the Gilmore house and she moved it," Emily sighed and looked over at Rory. "Rory has not spoken with her mother since the first stay in the hospital and that it a rift I do no see mending anytime soon."
Finn nodded as he took in what Emily said and knew that he wouldn't get additional information from her.
The two lapsed into silence until his cell phone chimed with a message from Colin letting him know they were almost at the hospital. "Mrs. Gilmore, Logan and Colin should be here soon. I'm going to meet them in the waiting room."
Emily nodded. "Please let them know that Rory needs to limit her stress. I understand that Rory and Logan need to talk but some of those conversations may need to wait until she has the baby."
Finn nodded and walked out the door to wait for his friends.
