Chapter 10: I would die for you.

Their honeymoon had gone by in a flash and their return to work had been felt so normal to both of them; it was a part of their lives, it was where they met and, even if they were on different shifts, they kept their promise to always say a proper goodbye to each other, just in case. It was the middle of February now, so Andy and Nick had now married for almost 2 months and Andy believed that the two of them were settling rather well into married life and they were both incredibly happy and glad that they were now husband and wife. Even though they were married, their lives continued as normal; they spend the evenings together, or at The Penny with Tracey, Dove and Chris and Chloe, or Andy spent the evening with Tracey and Chloe, because she and Nick had always been very relaxed, but they knew that, at the end of the day, they would always go home together. Nick was glad that he felt closer to Chris and Dove now and that was due to Chloe's influence. Andy always put her engagement ring in her locker at the beginning of a shift, because of its value and not wanting to make herself a target as a police officer, but her wedding ring was never going to be taken off. She and Nick were married and it was a symbol of their marriage and Nick felt the same way about his. The only thing that had changed was that Andy had changed her surname, so her nametag now read 'Collins', but most at the station still called her Andy or McNally; although the only people who really called her by her former surname were Sam and Oliver.

It was 8 in the morning and Andy had only returned home about 5 hours before and Nick was due to be at Parade at 9. Andy wished that their shifts could be closer, but, when she opened her eyes and smelt breakfast, she smiled, but stayed where she was, because without work, she was not a morning-person, not even when her husband was making the breakfast. Nick had already changed into clothes to wear to work and he carried some breakfast through to Andy and she pretended that she was asleep, but she was grinning.

After putting down the food, Nick sat down on the bed and kissed Andy's neck, until she started to laugh and opened her eyes, laughing and rolled over, and he looked down at her, laughing at her. "You never can keep a straight face, can you? How was your shift last night?"

Brushing her hair out of her face, Andy smiled and replied, "It was good, but I'm off tonight. Thank goodness because I'm exhausted. What time does your shift end?"

"It should be 6." They were both silent for a couple of seconds, before Nick smiled and rested his head against hers as he whispered, "I love you, Andy."

Looking into her husband's eyes, Andy kissed him, then replied, "I love you, too, Nick. I'll see you tonight." He kissed her again and they lay there for a couple of minutes, enjoying being together and they hugged each other and kissed again before Nick left, leaving Andy with the breakfast.

For most of the morning, Andy sat on the sofa, in front of the TV, until her mother called her, wanting to go shopping with her and Andy accepted this offer. Clare had hosted a great Traditional Tea for her and Nick's wedding and Andy had been so busy with Nick and work that she had not had the chance to thank her mum.

After enjoying a couple of hours of shopping, Clare insisted that she and Andy had some lunch together. Andy knew that she might never forgive her mother leaving her, but the older woman was making such an effort to know her now and she appreciated that and Andy was also glad that her mother liked Nick and that he liked her, because they were both important to her.

As they were eating, she was caught off guard by her mother's question: "So, are you and Nick going to start trying for a baby? He said he wanted kids the first time your father and I met him and you're past 30 now, Andy." She didn't mean her tone to sound annoying, but Andy did her best to ignore it.

Forcing a laugh to keep the conversation light-hearted, Andy replied, "Mum, Nick and I haven't even been married for 2 months yet." Her mother just looked at her, so she added, "We want kids, eventually. Just not now. We're happy with it just being the two of us."

A couple of seconds later, Andy's phone started to ring. It was Tracey and Andy froze, because she instantly knew that there was something wrong. "Tracey, what's wrong? Is Nick okay?" She didn't even wait for her best friend to speak before she asked quickly, wanting to know if her husband was alright.

Tracey sighed and replied, "Andy, Nick's been shot. He's been taken into surgery. I thought you'd want to know as soon as possible."

Without saying anything to Clare, the older woman already knew, so she drove Andy to the hospital, who was sitting in total silence, clutching her wedding ring. She had seen Nick that morning before his shift and they had told each other they loved the other, resting their heads together, they had hugged and kissed. Andy knew how much she was loved by her husband and he knew how much she loved him and she prayed that he would be alright. They never took a second together for granted, but Andy still wanted to spend the rest of her life with him and she felt as if she could hardly breathe. She and her husband had a promise, to always go home to each other and she did not want him to break it by dying today.

By the time Andy arrived at the hospital, there was a group of police officers there and Andy was glad to see Chris and Dove's faces and she stepped through the crowd to speak to the Dr. "Excuse. I'm Officer Andy Collins. My husband, Officer Nick Collins, is in surgery. Can you tell me what's happening, please?"

The Dr gave her a sympathetic smile and said, "I'm sorry, but he's still in surgery here. If you just wait here, I'll tell you if something changes."

"No. I don't think you heard me, Dr. My husband is a police officer and he is in surgery and I need to be there with him. Is there an observation room I can use whilst I wait?" In a softer tone, she added, "Please, I just want to see my husband." The Dr nodded and agreed to show her to the observation room for a couple of minutes. From there, Andy could see the surgeons operating on Nick and she closed her eyes, fighting back the tears, telling herself that Nick was going to be fine.

In an almost daze-state, Andy went back to the waiting room, where Chris and Dove sat with her and Chris passed her Nick's vest. He said that before they had married, Nick had written messages on it, for Andy. Andy remembered that day, but she didn't want to read them, because she wanted to speak to her husband in person. Both Chris and Dove hugged her and Dove assured her, "Collins'll be okay. He's a fighter and he won't ever want to leave you."

Andy gave him a small smile and looked down at Nick's vest which was still in her hands. She also looked at her wedding ring and engagement ring and inhaled a deep breath and closed her eyes, remembering talking to Nick that morning, hugging and kissing him and she wanted those happy memories in her head now.

When the Dr came back and told Andy that Nick was in recovery, she was so happy and almost ran to the room where her husband was. The bullet had not caused any major damage and Andy thanked God for that mercy.

Nick's eyes were closed, but, when Andy walked to the other side of the bed, she could see that he was smiling, just as she had been doing that morning, when he had come in to their room to give her breakfast. She sat down on the bed and kissed him until he opened his eyes and looked at her and, in that moment, Andy started to cry, so she wrapped her arms around her husband. "Oh, Nick! I was so scared. I'm so glad you're okay!"

She released Nick from her grip and he smiled and wiped away the tears on her face and whispered, "You don't think I'm going to forget our promise, do you?" He frowned and asked, "What's wrong, Andy?"

Andy was silent for a couple of seconds, before her lips captured her husband's in a passionate kiss and he returned the kiss and they stayed like that for a while, until the kiss broke and the sat there, hugging, wanting to be close to each other. It was not the right time to talk about this, but Andy had been thinking about her conversation with her mother and, after hearing that Nick had been shot, she had realised she didn't want to leave it. She loved their life and she knew that Nick did, too, but she also knew that she wanted to have children with Nick, so she decided that, when she and Nick were ready and it was right time, she wanted to start trying to have a baby, but right now, she sat with her husband, holding him close, silently thanking God that he was alright.
