The moon broke through the clouds, and the four of them stood there, frozen, waiting for something to happen. They were in the middle of an open field, and it was as if a spotlight had been trained on them. Suddenly, without warning, they heard the howl.
"That sounded pretty far away," Evelyn said, trying to remain hopeful.
Warren, however, was far more seasoned at this. He had been traveling with his parents' cart since he could walk. "About a mile off, but no more, and them beasts can cover that distance before you know what hit ya. Make sure your crossbows are loaded."
Everyone checked for probably what was the hundredth time. Still, they knew what kind of danger they faced. It was better to be safe than sorry. With no cover and being completely visible in the moonlight, they were sitting ducks.
That was when they heard the rustling in the bushes. "Th-that can't be it already," Thomas whispered. "They're not that fast, right?"
"Aye, but they never hunt alone," Warren said. "Only question is which pack? That would tell us how many."
"Which one's better to face?" Thomas asked.
Warren shook his head. "None of 'em. Krallenhorde are many, but they at least kill you quickly. Leeraug are fewer, but they like to watch you suffer."
The four of them grew even quieter. Then the first hairy paws emerged from the cover of the trees. To the three younger merchants, they had never seen werewolves before, never knew how big they were. It was about half as tall as the enormous trees of the forest. Warren counted as more emerged.
"Ah, looks like the Leeraug pack. Not good. Alright, they may get us, but we're taking a few of them with us. Which of you wants a taste of this thing first?" he shouted, aiming his crossbow.
The biggest of the group roared and the pack began to swarm. Feyla, who was the one driving the cart screamed, sending the horses into a frenzy. The others let a few bolts fly, but the beasts moved so fast, they did not stand a chance.
But everything stopped when they heard the beat of wings. She descended from the sky gracefully, her crooked staff emitting a blinding light, and the werewolves cowered before it. When her feet touched, the four travelers immediately recognized her.
At long last, Avacyn had returned.
