Holmes had been spending every spare moment tracking Moriarty and Moran, interviewing former accomplices, scrutinizing every piece of evidence, and puzzling over motives and methods. He spent nearly every moment on the case, barely taking time to rest or eat.
"You'll both catch your death of cold and malnourishment," Mrs Hudson said disapprovingly as she brought up our evening meal after Holmes and I had spent a long day in the cold, trudging through the snow and following leads that seemed to evaporate as soon as we followed them.
"And even more may die if Watson and I don't defeat Moriarty," Holmes said, sitting down heavily and eyeing the food.
Mrs Hudson made a noise of disapproval. "And you won't do any of those people any good dead. Not to mention the rent that's overdue."
Holmes sat up in his chair. "The rent isn't due until-"
"Yesterday," Mrs Hudson finished with a scowl that was likely for show.
"It seems to have slipped my mind," Holmes admitted. "Watson, do you have Mrs Hudson's payment ready?"
"My apologies, Holmes, I've been as busy as you," I said.
"You'll have to take time off," Mrs Hudson said. "To pay your rent, and the late fee: take Miracle for a walk."
"That sounds acceptable," I said, glancing at Holmes, and starting on my broth.
