When she awoke a few hours later the faint hint of light was creeping into the glade. It would soon be sunrise. She was lying by the looks of things at the side of the slammer. She groaned as she moved into an upright position and opened her eyes to see a worried, frowning face with a mop of blonde hair.
"Oh gods Ames are you ok?" She nodded at Newt whose eyes travelled to her neck, the faints signs of bruises starting to appear, his face turned angry. "I'm going to bloody murder Gally." He stood making to stand up. Amelia pulled him back down to her and put both hands on his face forcing him to look at her.
"Don't Newt, he's been stung." Realisation crossed Newt's face but the anger was still fizzling beneath the surface. "What's going on?"
"Theresa's given Thomas the final vial of whatever's in those syringes, he's been unconscious for the past few hours though like you." Minho spoke from her side as she noticed him and Chuck for the first time.
"We can't let him banish them." Amelia's voice was firm.
"We have a plan for that Ames, we're going to turn on Gally at the last second and go into the maze, we're going to find the way out. Hopefully we can convince a few more shanks with us." Minho tried to sound confident in their plan but Amelia knew it would be a hard task to get a load of Gladers past the Grievers who would surely be on high alert after last night. But she nodded in agreement at the plan, it was probably the only chance they had anymore. She turned and looked into the pit and saw Thomas twitching on the floor, clearly dreaming fitfully, Theresa sat next to him stroking his hair in an attempt to soothe him. She looked up at Amelia when she peered in.
"You ok Amy?"
"As good as I can be, you?"
"Same, I think Gally might have been stung." Amelia smiled at the girl, she was smart.
"He has, I saw the marks on the back of his neck."
"Doesn't excuse him nearly bloody killing you Ames." Newt's voice still held some of its anger besides her, she found his hand and squeezed, before leaning in and giving him a quick peck on the lips. He visibly relaxed at her touch and smiled. Below them Thomas suddenly stirred. They all looked at the glader below as he opened his eyes, smiling slightly as he saw Theresa next to him before catching the the others looking from above.
"What's happening?"
"Gally's taken control, said if we didn't do as he told he'd banish us with you and Theresa at sunrise. So we've got a plan to escape." Newt filled him in on the rest of the plan. Thomas looked almost sad when Newt had finished talking, something both Amelia and Theresa picked up on.
"Tom? What's wrong?" He shook his head and Theresa tentatively turned his face to hers.
"What is it?"
"This place, its not what we thought it was. Its not a prison, its a test. It all started when we were kids, they'd give us these challenges, they were experimenting on us, and then people started disappearing. Every month one after the other like clockwork."
"They were sending them up into the maze." Newt finished for him. Thomas nodded and continued.
"Yeah. But not all of us."
"What do you mean?" Newt asked cautiously.
"Guys. I'm one of them." Thomas looked ashamed. "The people who put you here I worked for them. I watched you guys for years! The entire time you've been here I was on the other side of it." He looked at Theresa, "And so were you." She shook her head, but Amelia could tell by the look in her eyes that you girl knew it to be true. "Theresa we did this to them."
"No. It can't be true." She responded. But they all knew she knew it was.
'It is. I saw it." Thomas said his voice breaking at the words. Newt rubbed at the stubble that was starting to form around his chin.
"Why would they send us up if we were with them?" Theresa asked desperately.
"I dunno, it doesn't matter." Thomas replied touching her knee as he did so.
"He's right." Newt suddenly spoke. "It doesn't matter, any of it. Because the people we were before the maze, they don't even exist anymore, these creators took care of that. What does matter, is who we are now. And what we do right now. You went into the maze and you found the way out."
"Yeah but if I hadn't Alby would still be alive." Thomas was full of self doubt. It was clear on his face.
Newt took a deep breath, Alby's death was still so fresh in their minds. "Maybe." He spoke in a quiet voice full of pain but also a tinge of hope. "But I know that if he were here he would be telling you the exact same thing. Pick your arse up and finish what you started." His voice broke and he looked at Amelia to continue.
"Because, because if we do nothing then that means that Alby died for nothing and we can't have that." She took his hand in hers and looked at him with such a fierce determination that filled them all with hope. Thomas looked at Theresa and nodded.
"Ok. But I have to say one more thing." He looked at Amelia, "I put you here. It was me. We were friends, all of us, before any of this. And you were so close to Alby, Minho and particularly Newt, you'd come over on the same boat as him when you were kids, and you never lost the connection you had. I couldn't let you lose it. I couldn't let you lose them. I deliberately put you in the wrong elevator, by the time they realised it was too late. I got punished, bad, they beat me. But it was worth it. Because those friendships that you all had before the maze you all found them again. You all found each other again." The Gladers all looked at each other and Newts voice caught in throat as he spoke to Thomas.
"Tommy. I am eternally grateful to you." He hooked an arm around Amelia's shoulders and brought her close to him.
Thomas nodded at Newt and looked determined for the first time since he'd woken up.
"Right. We've just got to get through Gally first."
They didn't have to wait long. Sunrise came quickly and so did Gally's new followers. The Gladers moved out of the way of slammer as two builders dragged Thomas and Theresa out and over to the maze doors, they followed closely behind ready for the signal. Gally nodded as they approached and it was then that Amelia noticed the poles that had been erected by the doors.
"This is such a waste."
"Gally, look this doesn't feel right man." Winston reasoned.
"Maybe Thomas is right, maybe he can lead us home." Frypan tried as well.
"We are home." Gally's words were final. "Ok? I don't want to cross anymore names off that wall."
"You really think banishing us is going to solve anything?" Theresa spoke as Amelia, Newt and Minho moved into position.
"No. But this isn't a banishing. It's an offering." Gally's voice sounded both angry and scared.
"What? Gally what are you doing!" Amelia had to hand it to Theresa. She was a good actress.
"You really think I'm gonna let Thomas back in the maze after what he's done?" Gally's voice was raised now as his emotions got the benefit of him. "Look around you! Look at our glade. This is the only way! And when the Grievers get what they came here for everything goes back to the way it was." Out of the corner of her eye Amelia could see Chuck sneaking up behind them laden down with their supplies and weapons.
"Are you listening to this?" Theresa continued her act. "Why are you all just standing there he's crazy!" If you stay here the Grievers are going to come back, they're going to come back and they're gonna keep coming back until you're all dead!"
"Shut up!" Gally snapped. "Tie them up! Did you hear me I said tie them up!" The Gladers were starting to have second thoughts and Gally was sounding more deranged by the minute. It was then that they sprung into action, all at once taking down the loyal to Gally Gladers as Amelia charged forward to untie Theresa and Thomas. Thomas, Theresa, Amelia, Newt, Minho, Frypan, and Chuck all backed towards the maze doors.
"You're full of surprises aren't you." Gally looked between Amelia and Thomas.
"You don't have to come with us but we are leaving." Thomas stated as he pointed his staff at Gally. "Anyone else that wants to come now's your last chance."
"Don't listen to him he's just trying to scare you." Gally responded looking round at the remaining members of the glade.
"I'm not trying to scare you you're already scared alright I'm scared! But I'd rather risk my life out there than waste it in here. We don't belong here. This place isn't our home. We were put here. We were trapped here! At least out there we have a choice. We can make it out of here, I know that." Amelia had to admire is was at pretty good speech of Thomas's. And it worked. Winston, Jeff and a few others all made there way past Gally, who seemed past the point of arguing, and towards the doors with the escaping Gladers.
"Gally?" Amelia tried one last time to help him. "Its over. Come with us." She pleaded.
"Good luck against the Grievers." Gally turned around and walked into the glade. She knew he was past the point of help now. She turned away taking Newts hand in hers and together with the rest of them began to run into the maze. Just before she rounded the corner she took one final look back at the place she'd called home for that last three years. She knew that however this ended she would never see it again.
