Elena's POV: (Opening thoughts)
I cannot believe this. First vampires... now werewolves. Well if it's true Jake can tell us himself as we are heading to his house now... if Billy will let us in.
We arrive at Billy's and Bella bangs loudly on the door. Billy opens the door and he does not seem happy to see us at the door.
"Bella, Elena," he greets us with a hint of annoyance in his voice.
"We need to see him," Bella says in a no nonsense tone.
He pauses for a second before saying. "He's not in."
I bite my tongue as I can tell he's lying.
"I'm sorry but we really need to see him," I tell him before Bella and I side step past him into the house.
"Girls!" He calls as we begin to head for Jake's room.
We hear the front door slam just before we open Jake's door to see that he is asleep. How can we wake him when he looks like he has not slept in weeks.
I glance at Bella and see that she is thinking the same. We hear some sort of noise from outside and my expression turns dark as I see Damon, Sam and the other wolves stood outside.
I storm outside to confront Damon and the rest of them. Bella is right on my heels.
"What did you do?!" I demand as I storm towards them and they all look shocked to see us both. "What did you do?"
I step towards Damon and shove him.
"HEY!" Jared yells.
"Easy," Damon and Sam both say as they hold their arms out to keep the others back.
"What did you do to him Damon?!" I yell at my ex boyfriend who seems hurt I am yelling. "FIRST YOU DUMP ME THEN YOU TURN JAKE AGAINST ME! Where's the man I loved?"
"He didn't want this," Bella points out to them.
One of the other men steps towards me but Damon keeps him back with a glare and an arm.
"What did we do?" The man snarls at me and I glare at him myself. "What did he do, hmm? What did he tell you both?"
"All of you calm down," Sam says as he stops the guy from getting too close to us both.
Nothing!" I snap at him. "He tells us nothing. Because he's scared of you."
The same guy laughs and this pisses me off. So I slap him.
Bad move! Now he's glaring at me and turning red. Sam is trying to calm him down as he begins to turn bright red and he shakes.
"Too late now," Jared says seeming amused.
"You two get back!" Damon tells us as he and Sam try to calm him down.
"Paul!" Sam begins slowly. "Calm down now!"
But he continues to shake and go red before there is a tearing sound and where Paul once stood their is now a wolf. Bella and I step back in shock. Paul keeps growling and I push my twin behind me. As he snarls Bella grabs my arm and we begin to run.
But he does not seem to be after Bella. Just me.
"ELENA! Bella!" Jake yells as he comes running out of his house and then he jumps over the bannister and begins to run towards us.
"RUN!" Bella and I yell out to him as we run forwards but he keeps running towards us and Paul. "JAKE RUN!"
But Jake suddenly jumps over us and their is a tearing sound and the second wolf staring at me in the field is there. I trip over and so does Bella. We turn to see Jake and another wolf, the other one who had stared at me, standing between Paul, Bella and I.
The orange one is by far the biggest and I look back at the other wolves. The only one besides Paul missing is Damon. He turned to protect me.
As the two wolves begin to fight Paul as a wolf they go flying across Jakes garden. Paul pins Jake down until Damon shoves him off by shoulder barging him. The three then begin to fight until they end up in the woods after falling through the boat.
Sam seems unfazed as he glances at Bella and I.
"Hey," he says to the other two, Embry and Jared I believe as I had seen them both before. "Take Bella and Elena back to Emily's place."
"Guess the wolf's out of the bag!" Jared says as he and Embry come over to us
Alice...Is it possible that everything is true. The fairy tales and horror stories. Is it possible that there isn't anything sane and normal at all.
We have now come to an unrecognizable house. I had never been here and I didn't trust the wolves enough to follow as they got out. Neither apparently did Bella.
Both boys make some sort of yipping noise, probably to let this girl Emily know that they are here.
"Hey," Bella calls rolling down the window of our truck. "I think we should go back and see if Jacob's okay."
"I hope Paul sinks some teeth in him," Jared says and I see Bella glaring at him from besides me. "Serves him right."
But Embry disagrees. "No way, Jacob's a natural. You see him phase on the fly? I got five says Paul won't touch him. Come on in you two! We won't bite!"
Embry had finally noticed we had not left the truck and I share a look with Bella.
"Speak for yourself," Jared says.
I sigh and shrug at Bella before we get out of the truck. Jared had headed inside but Embry waits for us to get near him before he speaks.
"Oh, Hey about Emily Sam's fiancee," he says and their is a sad hint to his tone. "Don't stare. It bugs Sam."
I share a look with Bella before we both say. "Why would we stare?"
But we were about to find out apparently as Embry just walks into the house. I glance at my sister and we begin to follow.
"You guys hungry," I hear a woman's voice ask. "Like I have to ask."
As we enter the door to our house the woman, Emily turns and I fight not to gasp. She is a beautiful woman but the right side of her face is disfigured by scars that look like we they were done by claws. Very big claws.
"Who's these two?" She asks with half a smile.
"Bella and Elena Swan," Jared told her.
She glances at Bella and me and raises her eyebrows. "So Jake's girl... and the vampire girl."
I nod and say to her. "So you're the wolf girl."
She smiles and nods. "I guess I am. Or at least I am engaged to one."
Bella chuckles.
Emily places a bunch of muffins on the table that both Embry and Jared are sat at. When they go to grab the food she slaps their hands like they are children.
"Save some for your brothers," she says and then she looks at Bella and I. "And ladies first! Muffin?"
"Sure," Bella says.
"Thanks," I say grateful as Bella and I skipped breakfast this morning.
We grab a muffin and stand a little bit away from the table.
"Leave it to Jacob to find a way around Damon and Sam's gag order," she points out and I sigh as I move.
"He didn't say anything to us," I tell him.
"It's a wolf thing," Embry says trying to impress me as he holds up his muffin and Jared continues to try and inhale his. "Alpha's orders get obeyed whether we want em to or not. Oh and check it out. We can hear each others thoughts!"
Jared is getting annoyed and snaps. "Would you shut up?! These are trade secrets! DAMN IT! Okay that's Jake's girl but the other chick runs with vampires."
He was pointing at me as he said the last bit.
"You can't really run with vampires," I point out and both Bella and Emily chuckle as Jared looks annoyed and Embry just keeps eating. "Cause they're fast."
"Yeah," he says contradictingly as Emily continues to laugh. "Well we're faster... Freaked out yet?"
But everything makes more sense to me about Damon now. And it doesn't scare me.
I shake my head. "You're not the first monsters I've met."
"Jake's right," Sam says as he enters and he does not seem bothered anymore that we are here. "Elena you're good with weird and Bella you adjust well."
He approaches Emily and begins to kiss her. All over her face and she laughs, I turn away not able to see two people so in love.
Jake, Damon and Paul enter. Jake immediately approaches Bella and he takes her hand. "Can we talk?"
She glances at me and I nod.
She heads off with Jake.
Paul turns to me and I am surprised to see that he is smiling. "Sorry."
I just nod as I stare at Damon as he approaches me. "I also think we need to talk."
I sigh but head out the door and I can feel his eyes boring into the back of my head as he follows.
We walk across the beach together. It is quiet for a few minutes. This reminds me of when we were together and we used to walk across the beach holding hands... until he dumped me.
"So... you're a werewolf?" I ask him as I bite my lip to fight what I really want to say.
"Yeah," He nods. "Last time I checked. A few lucky members of the tribe have the gene. If a bloodsucker moves into town, then the fever sets in."
I turn and he stops. "I have just one thing that I want to know... and I want you to be completely honest with me Damon Black?"
"Okay," he says slowly.
"Three years ago you and I were dating," I begin slowly and he sighs. Probably knows what I am going to say. "And all of a sudden you dumped me, no explanation... was this because of becoming a wolf?"
He sighs and then he nods. "It was after our anniversary. Do you remember I was running a fever?" I nod my head. "Well I got home and my mum told me..."
"Your dad had died," I say remembering Charlie telling me.
He nodded. "I began to feel my heart race and... I... I turned. My mum, luckily being a Black had been told the stories. She called Uncle Billy straight away. He came around and that was the first time you called... so she told you I weren't feeling well."
I nodded. This is beginning to make sense of the last three years. "I remember!"
"It turns out one of the Cullen's had been to town looking for a place to live," he says with a look of pure hatred on his face. "It took me two weeks to calm down and stop panicking enough to turn back into my human self. Then Uncle Billy and I had a chat. He told me... he told me the best thing to do was to avoid any relationships... so I made the phone call to you. I was on my own till Sam changed."
I felt so bad for him. "I'm so sorry. I understand a lot better now. But.. can't you find a way to just... stop? I mean it's wrong!"
He turns to me and stops walking looking a little angry. What hes happy he's been a murderer for the last three years.
"It's not a lifestyle choice Elena," he tells me and he holds his arms out. "I was born this way I can't help it. You're such a hypocrite Elena. What I'm not the right kind of monster for you."
"It's not what you are," I point out to him and he raises an eyebrow. "It's what you do. They never hurt anybody. You've killed people D."
He seems confused. "Elena we're not killing anyone."
He had stepped towards me and instinctively I step back.
"Then who is?" I ask.
"What we're trying to protect you people from," he tells me and something tells me I am not going to like the answer. "The only thing we do kill. Vampires."
I was right. I definitely do not like the answer.
"Wait Damon you can't-" he cuts me off.
"Don't worry we can't touch your precious Cullen's and your little ex boyfriend," he says glaring at the last few words. "Unless they violate the treaty."
"Okay A. that's none of your business anymore," I tell him and he sighs. "And B. that was not what I meant. You can't kill vampires. They'll kill you."
"Really?" He asks and he sounds more amused now. "We took out that leech with the dreads easy enough."
I am shocked when I realise who he means. "Laurent?"
"And his red-headed girlfriend is next," he says.
Oh no she is here. "Victoria's here."
"Was," he corrects. "We chased her all the way to the canadian border the other night. She keeps coming back. We don't know what she's after."
"I do," I say a bit shocked she has been here. So close to me. "Me."
He looks shocked as he steps towards me and takes my hands. "Well she won't get you. No matter what. I promise that."
I drop his hands. I cannot help the fact it's hard.
"D, I'm not ready for a relationship," I tell him and he steps back. "I'm sorry."
He nods and says one last parting line. "I can wait."
