Chapter Ten

"You paged me, Chief?" Mark asked, short of breath from running up three flights of stairs as he entered the office.

Dr. Webber held his hand out and as Mark looked out the window, his eyes grew wide. Just about every news station in Seattle had a truck or van parked outside. There were cops everywhere. "I need you to take care of this Sloan, I have a hospital to run."

"Yes, uh… Absolutely."

Closing his eyes briefly, he took a breath, walked away and back down the three flights of stairs that he had just climbed. He made his way across the lobby and out into the stirring mob. A few cops came up to him to persuade him back inside then he heard a familiar voice.

"He needs to come with me," Detective Williams said. "He's the victim's boyfriend." He steered him towards the news reporters. "They want information. Do not give them anything. Make a short heartfelt statement then we'll get you out of there. Provide no information. Answer no questions. They'll be banned from here soon. We're in the middle of processing the paperwork now."

Then the reporters were on him, hounding him for information. They asked question after question. Finally he got their attention and they quieted. "Addison Montgomery is the love of my life. She is the kindest and most gentle soul. And she is missing. We have no idea where she is or what happened to her. Please help us find her."

"She is a member of our family here at the hospital," Callie's voice greeted his ears.

"And we want her back," Derek said.

Mark turned to see them behind him, offering their bid of support. A few nurses stood behind them. He smiled in appreciation and turned back to the cameras. "Please," he said, "give us Addison back."

The police whisked them away after that. They shooed the media off of the premises. That night, after the sun had set, he sat staring out the windows in the lobby into the parking lot. The police had cleared out. It was quiet, and normal, outside. Fear crept into his skin from the weight that had been sitting in his stomach all day. He had been sitting there for two hours, trying to talk himself into getting up and walking home. Derek walked up to him moments later and sat down beside his ex-friend. He said quietly, "They'll find her, Mark. I know they will."

"They have to."
