Welcome back, Ultras to another exciting chapter of The Ultra 10 Chronicles! This is the most exciting chapter that I've written yet, in my opinion! Please let me know what your thoughts are, and drop a review, a like and a follow!

As you can see, I've changed the title and description of this fiction. This is due to the length of this work, and how little we've progressed through the plot so far. I am planning on ending volume 1 around two hundred thousand words, and will be working on volume 2 immediately after, uploading it the next week on the same schedule. So be prepared! I am also going to be making a few edits to the chapters past, to include the full title of this volume in the chapters.

There are a number of trigger warnings that apply to this chapter. There is a war that goes on, so there is a lot of death. There are a few descriptions of the murder scene, though it is not very graphic. (There is some descriptions of the dead.) When Ben comes upon a murder scene, it is described what he sees. You have been warned.

There is one instance of choice language in the chapter. It is in the paragraph after, "I'll make the request, the agent said."

The soundtrack for the chapter is "Take Back the Night" By TryHardNinja. You can watch it on Youtube by going to youtube watch?v=Kwwl9jiJ1A4. This one is Ben's theme in the chapter.

Gwen's soundtrack for this chapter is "It's All In Your Hands," the theme song to the 90's Animorphs tv show. (I don't know who's the artist.) You can watch it on youtube. Youtube watch?v=lHpuFckK4Hw.

Enjoy the chapter!

The Ultra 10 Chronicles: Volume 1: The Beginnings of Ultra 10

Chapter 23: A Familiar Problem

Aboard Vilgax's Ship, The Spirit-breaker

Vilgax sat on his throne, monitoring the progress of his drones through the reports of his androids. He was much too important to sift through the data himself, it was below him, the Conqueror of Worlds.

"What is the shuttle's arrival?" Vilgax demanded.

"The shuttle is en route," the android reported. "It will arrive in the ship's docking bay in under a minute."

"I am going to my throne room," Vilgax said, standing up from his pilot's chair. "Send the bounty hunter to me when he boards. And I want him alone."

"As you wish, my lord," the android said. Vilgax made his way to the throne room. He rarely had beings on his ship that weren't members of his crew. Mostly they were defeated and disgraced leaders of the planet he had just conquered. And when he had an audience with them, it was always from his throne room. He was always in the position of power, and them in the place to grovel and beg for mercy.

They always came alone, and Vilgax never had any guards with him. Just him and the prisoner. Vilgax would not allow them to feel safety in numbers. Nor would he show them his insecurity by being flanked by bodyguards. Alone and weak against an undefeated conqueror.

A bounty hunter was a little different than a defeated ruler and prisoner, but not that much different. Friend or foe, Vilgax would project his power and confidence, instilling fear and respect to all who were blessed to survive. A short time later, the door to Vilgax's throne room slid open. A creature stood in the doorway. It bowed in respect.

"Enter," Vilgax growled. The creature did as it was told, quickly entering the dim room. Six-Six made his way towards the throne and stood there in front of him. Neither approaching nor groveling, the bounty hunter stood a respectful distance away. Not close enough to be an insult, but not far enough to show weakness.

"I broke you out of the prison complex," Vilgax said after a moment of silence. "But my grace is not without price. I require something in exchange."

"And that I have," Six-Six's voice was translated through Vilgax's universal translator chip. "As I'm sure you know, I faced up against the wielder of the Omnitrix."

"What information do you possess," Vilgax growled, cutting through the formalities. "And for your sake, you had better hope that the information is relevant."

"Yes, conqueror, I believe it is. I know the face of the wearer, and his uniform. Further, I know the faces of those he works with," Six-Six informed. "My suit's recorder has logged away his height and his face. I can lead you to him." Vilgax sat in silence for a moment, wether to take this information in, or for effect, it was unclear to Six-Six.

"We will utilize this information for our next attack," Vilgax finally said. "My drones will download this information, and seek him out. And you will join me, when we track this mighty warrior down."

"There is another thing," Six-Six interjected. Although he wasn't of Vilgax's species, anyone could see his obvious rage at being cut off.

"Speak quickly, before I feed you to my vulpimancers for such insolence," Vilgax's tentacles swayed in annoyance.

"The wielder, he is not a warrior. But a youth, by Earth standards," Six-Six stated. Hearing this, Vilgax almost lost his demeanor. His tentacles spasmed and wriggled all around. Any member of his species would have been able to see it, but the sotoraggian was unable to detect it. Vilgax brought himself under control again.

"Most interesting," Vilgax said. "You, bounty hunter, have earned your right to serve me as my personal soldier, until the Omnitrix is in my possession. Now leave me!" Vilgax waived his hand, dismissing the bounty hunter. The being quickly turned and left him in peace.

The next evening, Bellwood

He walked through the crowd of people towards the platform that they had erected for him. The entire building was dimly lit with several torches, although it was entirely unnecessary. He could see through the dimness easily enough. He had chosen this rotten, crumbling building because no one came here looking for some fun. It was too old, too rotten and too dangerous. The entire building creaked and groaned in the wind and rain. But he didn't have any fear about it falling. A falling building was too slow to hurt them, they only needed protection from the elements. And they wouldn't even need to stay here after tonight. They only needed somewhere to congregate.

Reaching the platform, he made his way to the front of it, turning to face the crowd. Seeing him, a hush quickly spread through the crowd. Good, he preferred to be feared and respected than loved and adored. Folding back his hood, he addressed the crowd.

"My brothers and sisters!" Jason addressed them. "Tonight is the night we have been waiting for! Tonight is the night that we take what is ours!" A roar of applause and shouts burst out from them. Jason glanced about at the hundreds of vampires assembled there.

"Lord Dracul, the pretender has been defeated, clearing the way for us to rise! His cautious ways were the ways of scrounging by, of constant fear. They were the ways of the past! I now greet you to the ways of the future! Of domination! Tonight the age of the vampires begins!" The crowd shouted in anticipation.

"Tonight, we hunt! Together in packs, we are strong! We will overwhelm all resistance, and feast on their blood! The Dracul-slayer, Ultra 10 will join us, or he will die!" The applause and shouts were deafening. "Go, my brothers and sisters! Go and hunt! You know your targets! Show no mercy! Satisfy your hunger! For blood and vengeance!" The hundreds of vampires rushed out of the building. Many of them transformed into bats or other demonic creatures, while others simply tore out of the crumbling building, and out into the dark, rainy night.

Jason smiled a devilish smile to himself, seeing the frenzy his audience had been stirred up into. He had been planning for this night for months, years even. And now, the first domino would fall. He disappeared into a puff of smoke, emerging as a gigantic vampire bat.

Ben's house

Ben was in his room, playing Sumo-Slammers: The Game with both Sam and Lukas. It being spring break, they were taking a break from the pressures of school. Still, it was getting late, and he'd need to start his patrol soon. Suddenly, his cell phone rang. He checked the collar ID before answering it.

"Hey, Doc! What's going on?" He greeted Julie.

"Ben, you'd better get out there as soon as you can," Julie said matter-of-factly. "There are police dispatches going off all around the city. I've never seen anything like this before." Ben reached into his pocket and pulled out his suit, opening it up. The nano-mech unfolded to cover his entire frame. Lukas' communicator also unfolded on his wrist.

"What's going on?" Lukas asked, noticing his communicator. Sam also took his attention off of the video game.

"There was a murder at a diner on Fifth Street," Julie said. "Another at a jewelry store on Persia. Nothing stolen at either place, but everyone inside were found dead." Ben raised his Omnitrix and activated it.

"Accelerate!" He shouted. He took off, racing downstairs and out the front door.

"Could it be gang warfare?" Lukas asked.

"That is what I first thought," Julie said. "Whoever or whatever is doing this seems to be coordinated."

"I'm almost to the diner," Ben said. "There's cop cars shutting off the entire street."

"Hold on," Julie said. "There's a new dispatch called in for a gas station on the corner of Harmony Road and Forrest Boulevard. That's the most recent one."

"Got it!" Ben raced off. He arrived in just a few seconds, but was already too late to catch whoever killed the people. There were several dead bodies lying inside the store and around the gas station.

"Guys, it's pretty bad here," He said into his comm link. "Everyone is dead, both inside and outside. And they're not gunshots. It looks almost like a wild animal killed these people."

"What would make an animal attack people like this?" Lukas asked.

"Animo," Sam said into his friend's communicator. "He could have escaped and directed the animals to attack."

"Not his MO," Julie said. "He goes after money or technology. Not to kill people."

"Even if he did kill people," Ben added. "He'd go after the police. Not regular civilians. They are no threat to him."

"Ben, a camera just caught something happening on Ridgeway. Looks like another murder!" Julie interrupted. Ben sped off, heading towards where the camera was stationed. He arrived in just a few seconds, but like the gas station, he was just a second too slow.

"Whatever these are," Ben spoke into the communicator. "They are fast. This one is already dead."

"I'm calling in Lucky Girl," Lukas said. "Hopefully one of you get lucky."

"It sounds like the police are having the same idea as you two," Julie said. "They are calling in cops from all over the county. There's already talk of an emergency broadcast going out telling people to stay inside."

"Team, you all stay inside," Ben said. "Don't risk trying to go home, not even in a car. We still have no idea what is going on."

"It didn't even cross my mind," Lukas said. "Trust me, we're perfectly content where we're at."

"Ben, there's a bank on Holmes that is being attacked. A distress call just came from there," Julie said.

"I'm on it!" He zoomed towards the bank. He was already close, and he arrived in an instant. He zoomed up the steps and into the stone building. Inside, there were several bodies laying on the ground, several of them with throats ripped or otherwise clawed and torn up. Ben made his way through the bank towards the back, where the safe was. He palmed his badge and transformed into WildMutt.

He sniffed around, his smelling momentarily being blinded by all of the gore and blood scattered around. However, he sorted through all the scents to try to find out what had happened. The scent was odd, something that the alien had never smelt before. However, he did pick up another smell. Ben made his way over to the safe, and palmed the Omnitrix.

"FourArms!" He shouted, and took hold of the safe. "Ugh!" He grunted as he pulled hard. Slowly, the safe door started to pull away, until it finally came loose. Ben hefted the door and tossed it aside. Inside, there were three terrified people, huddled in the corner.

"It's alright," Ben said. "I'm a good guy!" He palmed the badge again, reverting to his human form. "What happened here?"

"They showed up out of nowhere," one of the terrified people stuttered. "They just appeared in a puff of smoke. And then they started killing people! Biting, clawing, it was terrible!" The other two nodded in agreement.

"Thank goodness we were already close to the safe!" A second one said. "We closed the door behind us, and waited for them to leave!"

"The police are on their way," Ben said. "You'll be safe with them!" He turned to leave. Walking out of the bank, he spoke into his headset.

"Hey, Doc, I got a bit of a description. There were a couple of survivors at the bank. They said that the attackers showed up in a puff of smoke, and that they were biting and clawing at the people," Ben informed her.

"Out of a puff of smoke," Julie repeated. "Kinda sounds like those vampires you fought a while back."

"That's our best lead," Ben confirmed. "They would go after blood instead of money or loot. But why are they so violent? And how are they attacking all over the city at once?"

"Wait, I thought that we killed their leader. Darth Vlad what's-his-name?" Lukas asked.

"Yeah, we did," Ben agreed. "But some of his vampires must have escaped."

"Whatever you do," Julie said. "Be careful. Vlad was tough, and he wasn't as aggressive as whoever these vamps are."

"Agreed," Ben said. "Any new reports? We've got to save as many people as we can."

"No, it's been quiet the last couple of minutes," Julie said.

"I don't like the sound of that," Lukas said.

"Regardless, it gives my watch some time to charge. What about Lucky Girl?"

"I contacted her. She said that she's going to try to do a locator spell to track some of the vamps," Lukas said.

"What about the heat camera?" Ben asked.

"No good," Julie said. "This rain is making it absolutely useless. It can pick up the living, but everything else is just too cold to be able to distinguish."

"Looks like we're back to patrolling the streets and hoping that we get lucky," Ben said. He activated the Omnitrix and was engulfed in a green flash. "Accelerate!" He zoomed off, flying past every alley and street.

"The police station!" Julie shouted. "There's an attack at the police station!" Ben shot off in the station's direction.

"They're trying to take out the cops!" Lukas said. "Without them, you're all alone!"

"Not if I can stop it!" Ben shouted. His reptilian lungs burned as he pushed himself harder to get to the station.

Gwen's house, thirty minutes before

Gwen ended her call with Lukas. Immediately, she dialed another number on her cell. She put it to her ear and waited for the other end to pick up.

"Hey, Gwen," Ellie answered. "What's going on?"

"There's murders happening all over the city," Gwen said. "Call Maddi and tell her to stay inside. Who knows where the next murder is going to take place!"

"Got it!" Ellie said. "Be careful out there!"

"Thanks," Gwen ended the call. "Ostendo!" She muttered, her clothes changing into the familiar black leotard and cat mask. She called the Arcamada Book of Spells and searched through its pages for a locator spell. After a couple of moments searching, she grabbed a piece of paper and placed it onto the floor in front of her.

"Invere locum suco!" For a moment, nothing happened. Gwen checked the paper, and back to the spell book. She checked the spell, and cast it again.

"Invere locum lamia suco!" This time, the paper glowed, drawing a map of the city with a number of glowing dots on it. Each dot was where a vampire was currently. They were hundreds of them, all racing through the city. Seeing this, she grabbed her cell phone and called Lukas.

"Hey, we've got a problem," She said. "A major one. I located the vampires. There's hundreds of them…"

"We've got to find their leader," Lukas said. "Somewhere where they are more densely concentrated. If we take out the leader, the rest will be more easily taken care of."

"Got it," Gwen said. She hung up and started scouring the map, looking for any patterns or pockets that were thick with vampire activity.

At the Bellwood Police Station

Ben zoomed up to the police station. With most of the cops dispatched to different parts of the city, there wasn't anyone outside to greet him. He transformed into FourArms and walked up the steps into the station. The front door was torn off its hinges.

"That's not a good sign," Ben said in this alien's nasally voice. "Looks like the vampires have already been here."

"Ben, I think that the rest of the night have been distractions," Julie said. "To lure the cops away from their main target, the police station. Whatever you see in there…"

"Be careful," Ben finished. "Already a step ahead of ya." Ben crept into the police station. Although most of the officers had been dispatched, there were still a large group that had stayed behind, from dispatchers to prisoner guards. Although there were a number of officers left there, they were all dead. The scene looked much like the other scenes Ben had witnessed throughout the night.

There were corpses laying on the ground, some of them stabbed to death, others with their throats ripped out or heads smashed in. Every officer was dead.

"They're all dead," Ben said into his comm link. All of them. I'm going deeper in." Ben cautiously made his way further into the station, back towards the prison. The scene didn't improve. Both police and prisoner had been killed. The vampires were indiscriminate in their killing. Along the way, Ben passed the armory, seeing the door torn off its hinges, just like the front door. Cautiously, he crept inside, surprised to see the entire room empty.

"I found their target," Ben said into his comm link. "They went for the armory. They took every weapon it held."

"Sounds like they're preparing for a war," Julie asked. "But against whom?"

"It's pretty obvious, isn't it?" Lukas said. "They are stronger, faster and more agile than us, but it still doesn't make up for guns and bullets. So they took them. They are going to take over the city."

"If that's true, then we had better find them as soon as possible," Julie said. "The longer we take, the harder of a fight we've got coming."

"Agreed," Ben said. He started walking out, when he passed one of the brick walls in the prison. Seeing something unusual, he walked closer to get a better view. On the wall, written in blood was a message.

"Ultra 10, Tonight is only the beginning. The police are dead, you are alone. But you can make it stop. Jason calls you for a duel. Meet him in Ross Park at midnight for a fight to the death. The victor will dictate the rule of the city."

"Guys, there's a message for me, written by the vampires." Ben read the message out loud, so that Julie and Lukas could hear. They were quiet for a moment.

"It sounds like a trap," Lukas said. "Why would they risk all that they've done so far, just for a grudge match?"

"I agree, you shouldn't go," Julie agreed.

"But if I don't go," Ben said. "Then the night's murder spree will continue."

"It's going to continue, even if you do go," Julie protested. "The only difference is that you'll be dead!"

"Not if I defeat Jason," Ben remarked.

"Even if he plays fair, and you defeat him," Lukas said. "You'll be too busy fighting him to save anyone else in the city!"

"How many new dispatches have been called in since the station was hit?" Ben asked.

"None, but the station isn't exactly sending out dispatches anymore," Julie protested.

"Cops searching the city haven't found any more murder scenes," Ben said. "So far, Jason is keeping his word."

"Ben, you can't trust that monster!" Lukas protested.

"I have to, for now at least," Ben said. "Tell Lucky Girl what we have found out. And for goodness sakes, put in a call to the PLUMMERs!"

"Ben!" Lukas shouted.

"I hope you'll forgive me when this is done," Ben said.

"Ben, don't you dare-" Julie started to say before she was cut off by Ben switching off his communicator. He looked up to the clock on the wall of the station. It read 11:50pm.

"You're mine, Jason," Ben said. "I'm coming for you." He raised his wrist and activated the Omnitrix. In a flash of light, he was Accelerate. He sped off towards Ross Park.

Gwen's house

Gwen was still pouring over her map, trying to find where the vampire leader could be. She saw a large cluster of vampires located in the old industrial part of Bellwood, where there weren't as many businesses.

"Gotcha!" Gwen said. She folded up the map and slipped it into her sash. Her sash was a lot heavier now, containing all of the Charms of Bezel. Some of them would come in handy tonight, particularly the Charm of Luck. Before leaving, Gwen ran over to her bookshelf and opened her cookie tin. Inside was the communicator that the Agent had given her and Ultra 10.

"I know you wanted to wait before trusting them," she muttered to herself. "But I guess that you'll have to forgive me later." She picked it up and pressed the button on it.

"Lucky Girl?" The agent on the other side asked. "What's the matter?"

"We've got a serious problem here in Bellwood," she said into the communicator. "We're going to need all the back up you can give us."

"I'll make the request," the agent said. "But we are being overwhelmed on all fronts, in multiple cities across the nation. We're spread really thin."

"Shit!" Gwen swore. "The one time we count on them, they've already got their hands full! Looks like it's up to luck!" She quickly slipped out her window and headed towards the old industrial part of the town.

Ross Park

Ben arrived at the park, and came to a stop. It stood as quiet as a graveyard. He sped towards the center of the park and immediately detransformed, to give the Omnitrix as long as possible to recharge. Still, he didn't see anyone.

"Jason!" Ben shouted. "Jason! Come and fight me!" He looked around, but couldn't find the vampire.

All of a sudden, a branch snapped. He spun around to see what it was, when he was hit with a heavy net. The heavy ropes threw him off of his feet, landing him on the ground a few feet away. The heavy wet netting made his movements slow and strenuous. Out of the darkness, a dozen or more vampires emerged, all rushing at him. Ben struggled to raise his wrist, eventually activating the Omnitrix. Several vampires jumped on him, just as he slammed down on the dial.

"RipJaws!" Ben shouted, as he was piled on by several vamps. He started clawing away at the netting, using his claws along with his teeth to fight not only the heavy ropes, but any vampire that got in his way. The heavy rain coming down made Ben feel like he was partially in his element, the water seemingly giving RipJaws a boost in his endurance.

Still, it was a loosing battle. He threw a vampire off of him, only to be slammed into by two more vamps. He bit one vampire's arm off, hearing the being scream in pain. But two more clawed at him with their claws. Finally, he received a blow to the head, falling into the mud with a thud. He was out cold. The Omnitrix changed him back into his human form, where he lied there, still tangled in the heavy netting.

A vampire snapped his fingers, and all the others backed away from Ben. The being walked up to him and smiled.

"Send word to Jason that we have subdued Ultra 10," the vampire said. He snapped his fingers at two vamps standing several paces away. "You two! Pick up the human, and bring him with us. We are onto the next phase." The vampires nodded and picked Ben up, dragging him through the mud, clinging to his arms.

Elsewhere in Bellwood

Gwen continued sprinting to the place indicated on her map. She hadn't run into any vampires yet, but she was saving all of her mana to fight them. She had a plan, and she hoped that it would work. If it was going to, she would need all the stamina that she could keep.

"I sure hope that I can pull this off," Gwen said to herself. "And I sure hope that it doesn't kill me!" She stopped under a canopy to a business and pulled out her map. The "nest" of vampires was only about two streets away. Gwen tucked the map back into her sash, and took off running again.

In a short time, she came upon where the map had led her. It was an old warehouse. However, it had been abandoned for a long time, it crumbling and nearly falling over. The rook was peppered with holes, and the brick was riddled with cracks. She couldn't imagine anyone in their right mind calling this place, "home, sweet home."

"This must be it," Gwen muttered. "Seems fitting to somewhere the undead would hang." She crept silent to the nearest hole in the wall. There were definitely something going on here. Inside the decaying building, she heard snippets of a conversation.

"Your excellency," a man said. "Gregory sends word that he has completed his task. Ultra 10 came, just as you predicted. He is subdued, and Gregory is now taking him to the safe house."

"No!" Gwen whispered in shock. "No, he can't be!"

"Haha!" Jason laughed. "The foolish hero! Always tied to such self-deluded ideas of honor and trust! If he weren't so valuable as one of us, I would very much enjoy seeing him suffer for his stupidity!" The entire congregation of vampires joined in on the laughter.

"Very well, I supposed that we had better get to him, to infect him, and force his turn," Jason said. "Frederich, take the weapons we have stolen and give them to our vampires fighting those accursed PLUMMERs. The artillery will be especially useful!" Frederich nodded, and headed off.

"I can't let them get away," Gwen whispered. She instinctively reached down to feel her charm of luck, rubbing it, as if to give her better luck. "Here goes nothing!" She stood up and entered the building's main room.

"Flame!" Gwen shouted, stretching both her arms out. On her hip, the Charm of Pyrokenesis glowed bright. Flames shot forth from her extended palms, like two jet streams of white-hot fire. Although the room was big, there were dozens of vamps crammed into it, and her flames made quick work of several of them. They burst into flames, some of them incinerating on the spot. There was an annoyed hiss from the remainder of the vampires, seeing their fellow vamps destroyed. Several decided to run at her.

"Ventus!" Gwen shouted. The Charm of Telekinesis lit up as a wave pushed them back away from her. She continued walking towards their leader, Jason, who was at the far end of the room, her flames burning away several more vampires. Suddenly, she looked up, just in time to see four or five vampires drop from the ceiling onto her.

"Wall!" She shouted. Her hands arced over her, projecting a dome over her head. The vampires landed on it, clawing and banging on it. The vibrations sounded like they were pounding on a thick window. However, Gwen could feel the pressure building up in her head as several cracks started to spiderweb from where the vamps were pounding. It was already starting to give her a headache. She had to finish this, and finish it soon! In front of her, several vampires charged at her, seeing her columns of flames disappear.

"Wall of flames!" Gwen shouted, spinning her arms around her, shooting flames out in a circle around her. She was quickly encircled about by a towering wall of fire. Her previous wall faded, and the vampires being suspended by it fell from the sky onto Gwen.

"Yah!" Gwen shouted as she kicked one of them into the wall of flames. Another charged her, and she side-stepped, tripping the vamp.

"Bombarda!" She shouted, hitting a third enemy with an ox-jaw hit. The vampire exploded into dust. Another two vampires clawed and snarled at her, as she did her best to avoid getting bit. One ran at her, and she used his momentum to throw him into the flames. But she was surprised by the second one.

"Ahh!" She screamed in pain, as she punched the vampire who had her neck in between his teeth. The vampire stumbled back, and Gwen fired a fireball through him. He burst into flames, quickly turning to ash.

Seeing her momentary lack of enemies, Gwen started the chant. From outside, she could hear the vampires ordering water to be brought from outside the building. It wouldn't be long at all before they put out the wall of flames.

"Inferno, pyro brisinga maximus! Inferno, pyro brisinga maximus! INFERNO, PYRO BRISINGA MAXIMUS!" Gwen shouted as several vampires made it through her dying wall of flames. From her hands, a small ball of light emerged, quickly growing in size and brightness. On her sash, the Charm of Pyrokenesis glowed bright as the ball of flame continued to grow. Finally, the wall of flames died, and dozens of more vampires dashed at her from every side. But they were just a moment too late to reach her.

The ball of fiery light expanded, not hurting Gwen, but burning away everything else that it touched. The nearest vampires were vaporized. Some saw what was coming and tried to get away, though it did them no good. The entire building caught fire, and every vampire within it, and surrounding it burst into ashes. Gwen stumbled her way out of the burning building, collapsing onto the wet grass.

That is it for today. What are your thoughts? What is going to come of Ben? How is Gwen going to be cured? Is she going to be cured before she turns? What's going to happen with the PLUMMERs? What did you think of Gwen's massive powers? Exerting that much power could very well cost her life. Any other theories about what is going to happen? Drop them in a review!
