Chapter 13
.
Johnny broke quickly, admitted that he and Hanson had raped and murdered a number of young girls over the years, mostly runaways and transients, girls nobody would miss. He wasn't sure why Hanson chose Amy, but said he had a girl in mind and just never got round to saying who it was. Dewey and Sydney were beginning to think that Dewey's original theory was right, this killing spree might have something to do with an unknown incident from their youth. They began questioning deputy David.
.
David: I swear I didn't know anything about what those two were doing.
Dewey: When was the last time you had an alcoholic beverage?
David: October 31st 2000.
Sydney: Almost 20 years, that's impressive. But you would have been in highschool when you drank?
David: Yes, but I've been sober ever since.
Dewey: Your daughter was targeted, Hanson's daughter was murdered. I remember how you two, and Johnny, were real hell-raisers back then. Something you three did back then is coming back for your children. I honestly don't know if the killer is done with your daughter. You want to protect her, help us.
David: Okay. Maybe I deserve to rot in Hell but my daughter doesn't.
Dewey: Good. So what happenned on Halloween 2000?
David: The three of us went to a Halloween party, we had some drinks. We noticed this girl, I don't even know what her name was. Everyone called her "Virgin Mary." Her family was really religious, homeschooled her, rarely even let her outside other than church. How she even convinced them to let her attend a Halloween party, I don't know. They shouldn't have. She was uncomfortable there, we offered to drive her home. I didn't know what would happen. But then Johnny and Hanson started to touch her, even when she screamed for them to stop.
Sydney: And you didn't even have the guts to tell them to stop. What did you do?
David: After what they did, they asked if I wanted my turn. So I did.
Sydney: Yeah, you figured two guys had already raped her, what was one more? You disgust me.
Dewey: I vaguely remember that girl and her family. As I recall they dissapeared around November 2000. I can't remember if I saw her after Halloween or not.
David: After what happenned, we were all afraid of being arrested, going to prison.
Sydney: Having what you did to an innocent girl happen to you.
David: Yes. The others were seriously considering murdering her, I convinced them that I could scare her. I did, I frightened her, said if she ever went to the police we would murder her entire family. It worked, better than I planned. She and her family moved away just after Halloween. I swear I didn't kill her.
Sydney: You really think you're a good person because you didn't murder the girl you raped?
Dewey: You're under arrest.
David: The statute of limitations ran out years ago.
Dewey: On the rape charge yes, but I'm hesitant to take your word that you let her live. We can hold you up to 24 hours before filing charges. During which time we will look for evidence linking you to that murder, or to the current ones. If we don't find any, we'll have to release you. But you will not be welcome in this police department ever again.
