Chapter 11
I pulled up in front of my childhood home in my sleek black SUV exactly at noon. I knew that lunch would be set on the table and the whole house would smell of my Mom's wonderful cooking. Grandma had the front door flung open before I could even get out of the car. Her big smile filled my heart with joy, and I ran up and gave her a big hug.
She laughed. "Careful now. You'll make me cry."
"I'm so glad to see you. I missed that smile." I held her tight.
"Well, I'm glad I remembered to put my teeth in today." We both laughed and my eyes were wet with tears of joy.
"Is that Stephanie?" I looked over my Gram's shoulders to see my mother standing by the kitchen table. She looked like she had aged in the last month and a half. I'm sure I did, too. She looked tired, and worry was apparent on her face. I stepped out of my Gram's arms and into my mother's. She immediately began to cry. "I'm sorry." She sobbed. "I can't help it. I've been so worried. " She held me tight to her for a long time, till my father broke us up.
"Alright, Helen. Girl the girl some air. Come here, Pumpkin." I moved into his arms, and it was my turn to cry. "I'm so sorry, sweetheart. "He whispered.
