Rose and Garnet sat together in Garnet's room. Garnet had closed all three of her eyes as she tried to look into every possibility of Rose's future if she chose to have a baby with Greg. There was a very, very slim chance that such a thing could occur, and when Garnet looked into this unlikely future, there were only two possible outcomes, and neither of them were good.

"Well?" Rose asked softly. She gently squeezed Garnet's hands, first the one with Sapphire's gem, because Rose really wanted to hear this future, and then the one with Ruby's gem, for courage, because from Garnet's silence, it would seem that Rose would need to be brave in order to hear what Garnet had to tell her.

Garnet squeezed Rose's hands back, and decided to give the easy part first.

"There's a one-in-two chance of a boy and a one-in-two chance of a girl."

"Yes," Rose said, "I know."

Garnet was tempted to remove her visor, but she didn't want Rose to see the tears in her eyes. She did her best to keep her voice calm and steady, and even more importantly, Garnet fought to keep herself together in every sense of the word.

"Rose, if you have a baby, you and your child will not be able to exist together. The gem would need to become a part of the child."

Rose thought this over. "So that means..." She trailed off, realizing she would never be able to see the new life she had created. She wouldn't be able to see the child grow...and she would have no more time left with her loved ones.

"Rose," Garnet said, "whatever choice you make, I won't interfere, but please think about it carefully."

Rose nodded. "Thank you, Garnet."

Rose left for her own room, and only when she was gone did Garnet break apart. Ruby and Sapphire hugged each other and pressed their foreheads together, the sort of comfort that they couldn't get when they were fused.

Sapphire cried harder than Ruby, with the tears gushing from her one eye like a little river as Ruby held her close. Sometimes Sapphire hated her clairvoyance, and she knew, even without future vision, that Pearl and Amethyst wouldn't take this well, either.
