Fun story for you guys!

I started this fanfiction about two years ago and then deleted the original script. In the first draft, Cana and Laxus slept together within the first five or six chapters as a way to break the "no inappropriate displays of affection rule". What first started out as something casual made them be like "huh do I like this person".

Anyway, I like this version of the story much better. Please enjoy!

Cana set down her big bag on the dresser in her room. It had gotten heavy with all the stuff she had. She didn't even have all of it. She had the skates, skateboard, and rollerblades. The skateboard had been hard to hide, but she had done it, even though she got a few glances from Erza. Laxus had the fireworks and the knife they had found.

It was a miracle they had found them all. But in summer in the south, you could find anything. Cana got out her stuff. They had agreed to get the rollerblades, skateboard, and skates out of the way tomorrow during free time and the weapon rule wouldn't count as broken until they actually brought it to a class or sermon. So Laxus had promised to bring the knife to the evening service. They obviously wouldn't show anyone or do anything with it, they just had to break the rule.

They still had yet to figure out how to break the firework rule. They had tossed around the idea of doing it soon but it wasn't something they could easily get away with. Cana had proposed having it be the last rule they broke on the last night as a sort of "farewell", so for now that was the plan.

Cana looked at the rule book. That should be it right? No. There were three more. Someone had to fight, they had to leave campus without permission, and they had to damage property in the rooms. The leaving rule was by far the easiest. They could do that tonight if they wanted. There wasn't an easy way they could stage a fight without getting caught immediately and being sent home, and she didn't count the water or the shaving cream battle. Those were their own rules.

Cana debated texting Laxus and asking him to leave campus with her tonight. But the thing was that she really didn't want to. It had been a long day and she kind of just wanted to go to bed after evening service. But she still wanted to hang out with Laxus.

Cana checked the time. Forty minutes until evening service. She was still sticky and covered with dried salt water. She needed a shower.

She ran the water until she was sure it was nice and hot. Cana loved the beach but she hated the aftermath. She was sure the van smelled like saltwater and sand. Gross. She stripped and stepped into the shower, letting the hot water run down her back. It felt great. Of course, as soon as she was in the shower she remembered another time she was in the shower. With Laxus.

"Nope! No, no, no, no! Get your mind away from that, Cana!"

"Are you okay," Laxus leaned down to whisper to Cana. They were sitting in their seats in the auditorium during the evening service. Makarov was in full swing now. Cana snapped her eyes away from him to look at Laxus.

"Hmm?"

"You're actually paying attention. You usually have your nose in a book or on your phone."

Cana hadn't realized she was actually listening to Makarov until Laxus pointed it out. It had just caught her interest. He was preaching about the story of the prodigal son. Cana had heard of it before but she never paid enough attention to actually hear the story. It was about two sons and their father. The younger son asks for his portion of the inheritance and the father gives it to him. And instead of using the inheritance on smart things he goes out and parties and gets drunk and sleeps with a bunch of women and wastes all of his money. Basically he just goes out and sins. But when he comes back to his dad after doing all of that, his father welcomes him back with open arms and throws a feast for him.

Cana could relate. Or at least she wished she could. She wished that she could come home to her mother any day and be greeted with a hug or any welcome at all instead of anger and regret. She wished she had a father to go back to. She wanted a set of parents who would love her no matter how badly she messed up. Isn't that what you're supposed to have?

"It's just...I don't have any parents like that. I wish that I-"

"You had that?"

Cana looked up at him with wide eyes. She felt bad now, looking at his scar and remembering his dad and mom.

"I'm so sorry, I forgot."

"Eh, it's okay," Laxus teased quietly, taking her hand. "We both have problems."

"Have you ever heard this story before," Cana asked. She was definitely hearing it for the first time.

"He does it every year. It's one of the easiest, most understandable, and most important stories," Laxus explained. "It's about redemption. It's supposed to represent how much God loves us no matter how much we sin."

"Sounds like a pretty cool guy."

"He is apparently."

Cana yawned and then sat up to kiss Laxus's cheek. And gosh darnnit, it shouldn't have affected him that much but it did.

"Aww someone's blush-y," Cana giggled. She took a sip of whiskey and let it sooth her. She was pretty wiped out from the day. She wanted to break a rule but she was pretty sleepy all of a sudden and didn't want to get out of bed tonight.

"Laxus, do you want to sleep with me tonight?"

He snapped his head toward her, his face instantly red and his eyes wide.

"W-what?!"

"Not like that, like actually sleep. We can damage property or something in my room, go to bed, and then wake up before everyone else to sneak you out."

Laxus forced himself to breathe normally again and calm down. His pounding heart was beginning to calm down.

"Sure," he mumbled, trying to be cool.

It didn't work.

Cana got out of bed and snuck to her door. Once she was sure that everybody was asleep she snuck to the door in the common room and cracked it open, looking for Laxus. He was waiting a little ways down the hall. She gestured for him to come and he crept down the hall toward her. She pushed the door open wider and he slipped in silently. He made a beeline for the room and she was right behind him.

"We do still have to keep it down though," Cana mumbled.

"What are you wearing?!"

Cana looked down at herself.

"Shorts and a t-shirt? What does it look like?"

It had gotten warmer in the building the last night so Cana had to resort to sleeping shorts instead of her usual sweatpants.

Laxus looked relieved.

"Your shirt is too long. It looked like you weren't wearing shorts."

"And that's of any concern because?"

"Well what if some guy had come in here?"

Cana smirked and sauntered up to him slowly.

"You mean like right now?"

"I'm allowed!"

"Oh, and why is that?" Cana feigned innocence, batting her eyes up at him. He looked stunned and confused it was kind of adorable.

"Well cause I'm your...boyfriend, right?"

He hesitated before saying it, almost like he wasn't sure. They hadn't said "boyfriend" or "girlfriend" out loud so hearing it was nice to Cana. She gave him a wide grin to show she was teasing him and then stepped forward to kiss him. It was quick and when she pulled away, she kept her huge smile.

"Of course!"

Butterflies. Fucking weird. Cana never had "butterflies". But the huge idiotic smile that spread across Laxus's face was just so adorable and kind of hot that she couldn't help it.

"So, what are we doing to damage property," Laxus asked, changing the subject. He was still kind of nervous about having a girlfriend, especially so soon. So he focused on what he knew. Breaking rules. Cana could tell but she let it slide. There was no reason to rush him.

"I don't really want to do anything that will be super expensive for Erza. The book says that the damages will be charged to the group."

"Well maybe we do something they just won't find."

Laxus turned in a circle, eyeing everything in the room carefully and thinking. His eyes landed on the desk.

"I got it!"

Cana saw him whip out the pocket knife in his pocket and crouch to get under the desk.

"What are you doing," Cana asked.

"Vandalism."

She could hear scraping and scratching sounds. She could only assume he was carving something into the wood.

"What are you writing?"

"You'll see!"

He sounded way to eager. He finished carving and then pushed himself out and up off the floor. He was pretty large so it was a tight squeeze between the two drawers on either side of the desk but he managed.

"Take a look. It's going to be on the back of the drawer on the left side."

Cana put her flask on the table to get on her hands and knees and scoot under the desk. She then pivoted to take a look at the left side. In very angular letters he had written: "C + L were here".

"Clever," Cana admitted as she crawled out.

"What are the chances they'll check behind the desk? And if someone finds it later down the line, they'll have no clue who "C" or "L" are."

"Really clever."

Cana stood up and walked over to the bed and flopped down. She slipped under the blankets and lifted them for him to come in too.

"Well, now that our rule breaking is over for the day, come to bed, "darling"," she joked.

"Of course, dear," Laxus continued. He took off his coat and tossed it onto the floor, slipping into the bed next to her.

"Imagine being married," Cana mumbled as Laxus adjusted himself and the covers next to her.

"Moving a little fast, aren't you," Laxus teased quietly as he turned onto his side to look at her.

"I don't mean us necessarily. Imagine being a working husband and supporting a household. Geez. Imagine if I was a wife! Me! A wife!"

"I can picture it now. You staying at home with the kids in a dress and apron, doing house chores!"

Cana gagged.

"Hell no!"

"Yeah. That makes sense. I could have figured you didn't like kids," Laxus admitted. Cana turned onto her side as well and scooted closer, talking into his chest now.

"It's the chores and dresses I'm opposed to. I love kids! They think I'm cool as hell."

"Really?!" Laxus was baffled. He didn't see Cana as the mom type at all!

"Mhm. If money was no object and kids weren't expensive as hell, I'd have seven."

Laxus pulled away from her to look at her face. He had to make sure that she wasn't shitting him.

"Seven?"

She nodded and chuckled a little.

"Seven."

"Any reason?"

"Well I want a lot of kids and seven is the most names I can come up with."

"Why do you want a lot of them? Aren't messed up kids supposed to want fewer?"

"How many do you want?"

"None." Laxus didn't even have to think. He knew. He'd thought about it before. "I'm too much like my dad."

Cana looked at his face. He seemed to believe it. It didn't sound like something he would fake. But she just couldn't understand it. In their time together he had never shown any signs of anger or violence towards anybody. Not even while they were having shaving cream or water fights. Laxus's dad seemed like a genuinely terrifying man. Scary looking and scary acting. But Laxus just looked tough and unapproachable. He was like a gentle giant. Hard on the outside and soft on the inside. But the look on his face told Cana not to argue. He had adopted this way of thinking and there wasn't any word of argument she could say to change his mind.

Or was there.

Cana smiled softly and then snuggled herself back into Laxus's chest.

"I used to be like you," she told him. "I hated kids. I thought I would be a terrible mom just like mine. But then in my freshman year I needed an extracurricular credit to not fall behind and everything else was full so I took teacher assisting. And one of the things they had us do was, every Friday, they bused us over to a nearby elementary school and we were all assigned a teacher to help for the day. I got Mr. Kedrick, a kindergarten teacher. I was mentally cursing out every person alive my first day. But the looks on all the little girls faces when they saw another one of them. It was something else. So every Friday I would go and help Mr. Kedrick teach or grade. I would walk around and help with their assignments or answer their questions. And if we had free time I would help them draw or I'd show them card tricks. Man, they loved my card tricks."

Laxus was keeping a close eye on Cana's face as she told him this story. Her eyes were warm and her smile was soft. If he asked her to she could probably tell him the name of every child in that class. It was clear that they meant a lot to her.

"And then one day when the kids were out on the playground, a little girl, Robyn, came up to me crying and told me a boy had pushed her. I knew exactly what my mother would do in that situation. She would have told that girl to get over it, life is hard. But that wasn't what I did. I got down on my knees and I pulled that girl into my arms. I asked her where it hurt and I put a "magic spell" on it with my cards and I promised her I would help her draw the most beautiful drawing ever that afternoon. She stopped crying and went back to playing. I talked to Mr. Kedrick and the boy got a time out. That was when I knew that I could and would never, ever hurt a child like my mom hurt me. I told myself that I would do everything right now that I knew what could go wrong. I would be everything for my kids that my mom wasn't for me."

Cana smiled and looked up at Laxus. He seemed to have an epiphany, or at least that's what his blank face looked like.

"Did I just blow your mind?"

He snapped out of it and shook his head a little.

"I had just never thought about it like that," he mumbled. Cana kissed his bicep that she was laying on and then returned to her position.

"How many are you thinking? Six, seven? Please say seven."

"I think I'll start with one."

"Ugh lame! Just wait until you start coming up with names. Then you'll really want a whole bunch!"

"Oh really," Laxus asked playfully. "Are you sure about that?"

"Positive! That's how I got my number."

"Okay then! What are your names?"

"Charlotte, Beth, Simon, Fin, Stanley, Violet, and Redmond."

"Only one of those was good."

"No, they're all good," Cana whined. "Which one did you like?"

"Simon. Maybe Beth."

"Beth was my favorite!"

"Stanley is such a dumb name!"

"No~"

Laxus laughed at her pouting. It was clear she was getting sleepy because she was starting to act like a kid.

"It's funny that you said Redmond," Laxus told her.

"Why? Is that your real name?! Please tell me that's your real name!"

She looked way too excited.

"No, you weirdo. Despite my better judgement, I always liked the idea of having a daughter with the name Redelle."

That startled Cana. They were freakishly similar. Coincidence? Definitely. She tried the name out.

"Redelle...Re-delle. Shit."

"What? I thought it was pretty good."

"That's my number eight. Not in three years has a new name been added to my list. Number eight. It must be destiny. We have to have a kid named Redelle now."
