Thanks to everyone who has reviewed!
So I have decided that this story will have 4-5 more chapters after this before moving to the next book.
. . .
Sunshadow blinked his eyes open back open, seeing the now-familiar TwilightClan camp. He was tempted to stay here, but he knew that his family would be worried. He squeezed his eyes shut. What about Moonsong? What was he supposed to do about her now? She would be suspecting that Sunshadow was trying to interfere with her relationship.
He started as Leafbreeze padded through the entrance.
"Your leader is here," he said. Sunshadow felt a twinge of worry, as he did not want to confront the leader just yet. He sighed. He had no choice. If he stayed here, Hawkstar might not welcome him back, if he would at all. He grudgingly walked out of the medicine den, instantly met by the BlazeClan leader's furious gaze. The large tom lashed his tail, motioning for Sunshadow to stand at his side. Head down, he complied, standing beside Hawkstar with his eyes to the ground. Nightstar stood on top of a rock in the clearing, staring at them menacingly.
"I hope your warrior knows now not to stray over the borders. I expect he will follow through?" Sunshadow looked up to see Hawkstar nodding. Follow through with what? he thought.
"Of course, Nightstar. He had no permission to cross your borders. I can assure you that this will not happen again." Hawkstar flicked his tail, motioning for Sunshadow to follow.
They padded on in silence. Once they reached their own border, Hawkstar blocked Sunshadow's path with his tail.
"Sunshadow?" he growled. Sunshadow blinked, swallowing nervously.
"Yes, Hawkstar?"
"I am extremely disappointed in you. You are a good, loyal, strong warrior that I value. And what do you do? You cross the border like that. That's not the only reason that I'm annoyed. You were looking for someone, weren't you?" Sunshadow felt his blood run cold.
"I-I," he stuttered. Hawkstar hissed.
"I want an answer, Sunshadow."
The young gold tom sighed. "W-well, I wanted to see Falconstrike, one of the newer TwilightClan warriors. I-I had met him at a, uh, Gathering a couple of moons ago and I wanted to see how he was doing. I ran into Burrowwink instead, who brought me back to their camp."
Hawkstar nodded curtly. "I am glad that at least you were honest. This does not take away your punishment, though," he warned.
Sunshadow nodded. "I know, Hawkstar."
"Good," he said gruffly. "Now, for the next quarter moon, you will make up for the prey you lost. I have spoken to Nightstar about this, and he agrees that this is a good way to make you understand what it costed for them to host you." He flicked his tail. "I also hope you realize that this is a loss for BlazeClan. We have to give our prey to TwilightClan as they did for you. You are to hunt two pieces of prey for them every day, and everything else goes to the fresh-kill pile. You will eat after everyone else has finished. Begin now. A TwilightClan patrol will be waiting every day at sundown."
Sunshadow nodded regretfully, beginning his hunt.
. . .
Moonsong waited anxiously in camp, hoping to see that Sunshadow was safe. She didn't know why she cared so much, after the way he had interfered with her personal life and had tried to expose her.
Her heart lifted with hope as Hawkstar entered the camp, his head high. He leaped onto the Burnt Tree, letting out a commanding call.
"Let all cats old enough to catch their own prey join here beneath the Burnt Tree for a Clan meeting!"
Most cats had already gathered in front of the tree, and they lifted their heads to hear what the leader had to say.
"Sunshadow has been found. He was with TwilightClan, apparently because he strayed over their border. He has been taken care of and is fine. Their medicine cat had already treated him, and he had been resting there for three days. He has been assigned to hunting duty for a moon to make for the prey he took from our neighbors." A few cats nodded in approval. Moonsong felt satisfied. Maybe this would get her brother off her tail.
Quiverhawk murmured inside her head, "You'll have to be more careful around the TwilightClan border from now on. A patrol heading over to pick up prey from your brother may run into you."
As the Clan dispersed, Moonsong headed for the warriors' den. Turtlefoot was on patrol, and Lavenderfern was on guard duty, so she had nothing else to do, and she certainly didn't want to head out where Sunshadow was. She curled up in her nest, sighing. She felt herself spiraling somewhere darker, safer...
. . .
"Welcome, Moonsong. I want you to meet someone." Moonsong nodded, eager to see who the newcomer was.
"Junipervine, meet my great-granddaughter, Moonsong."
Moonsong nodded to her. "Nice to meet you," she said politely. Junipervine gave her a curt nod.
"Quiverhawk has told me a lot of good things about you, young one," she greeted. Moonsong felt her ears burn a bit. Did Quiverhawk just go around telling everyone about her? Quiverhawk smiled at her. "Are you ready to show Junipervine what you can do?" Moonsong nodded. "Of course. What should I show her?"
Quiverhawk flicked his tail. "Anything you want. Think of this as an assessment." The silver she-cat took a deep breath, deciding to show Junipervine her most recently mastered hunting move. She crouched down, relaxing her tail, yet still keeping it in the air. She slid her front paws forward, powering her body with her hind legs. She stopped, shifting her weight to her back legs before pouncing. She soared through the air, landing about four tail-lengths away. She turned, feeling a bit self-conscious about herself, but Junipervine only nodded in approval.
"You've got strength. You were a bit unsteady during a bit of that, but overall you were fine. Quiverhawk has taught you well." Moonsong beamed, causing Junipervine to frown.
"You aren't a kit. Don't expect this praise, and certainly don't let it please you so much. If I say something good about your moves, then build on that." She swallowed back a sigh, nodding in consent as she wiped the happiness off her face. Junipervine blinked in approval.
"Rule one, never show your emotions in front of enemy cats. We aren't your enemies, but it's good to practice." She glanced at Quiverhawk, who nodded.
"I think that's enough for tonight. Get some sleep for tomorrow; we will be starting something new." He beckoned with his tail, dismissing her.
She walked off to an abandoned part of the forest, thinking to herself as she tried to sleep. Junipervine didn't seem so bad; in fact, she seemed to understand her more than Quiverhawk did.
She fell asleep, letting her spirit return to her real body.
