A Hunger Games Story Chapter 10
Emily woke up a few times in the middle of the night in her hole. She woke up once, flinching awake. She looked up, peeking through the branches. In between the leaves and twigs, Emily could tell it was still dark out. She relaxed and closed her eyes. She had the urge to use the bathroom but ignored it, falling back asleep.
The second day in the game, Emily woke up, feeling the need to relieve herself. Her eyes widened as she woke up. She stood up and moved the branches out of the way quickly. She got up out of the hole, planning on go in the bushes, when she saw something. Someone.
It was a boy, but she couldn't recall his name. He looked at her with a malicious smile on his face.
Emily slowly grabbed her stick from inside the hole, while staring at this boy.
After a few seconds, he started running towards her. He held a small knife in his hand.
Emily held the stick in her hand, ready to make her move. She hid the stick from view, appearing defenseless.
When he was about a yard away from her, he held his knife up high, over his head.
Emily quickly pulled the stick up from behind her. She held it with both her hands and shoved it forward, into the tribute's abdomen. With his speed, the stick went right through him.
Emily froze, staring at where the stick had impaled him. It went so far into his body. She did that.
She slowly looked up at her victim's face. His jaw was dropped and a line of blood was coming out of his mouth. He was not much older than her. Maybe a year older.
His muscles soon relaxed, falling towards her. The canon went off. He was no longer alive. She used the stick and push him to the side.
Emily quickly stood up, backing up against the tree. She took a few breaths before she thought of something useful. This seemed familiar to her.
Violet's advise! Ooh what did she say? Emily moves towards the boy's body and saw the knife on the ground nearby. She knelt down to grabbed the knife and noticed his backpack. She grabbed the bag and peeked inside.
Before she could look around, she heard some rustling in the bushes. She looked up and saw more tributes. Not just any tributes. Careers!
"There she is!" Clove said.
"That's not Katniss." Glimmer said.
"She's still a tribute. Let's get her." Cato said.
There was a lot of them in one group. One big alley of elite killers. The four careers, and a couple others, including Peeta.
Emily held the backpack in one hand and the knife in the other. She got up and ran as fast as she could.
The careers chased after her. They sprinted across the forest, with Cato in the lead and Peeta falling back.
Emily placed the backpack around her back and held the knife carefully in her hand as she ran. She dashed along some bushes and tried to find a way out of sight. This arena was a lot bigger than she had predicted. She heard several steps following her and laughing.
"We're going to get you." Cato teased.
"Don't forget, she's mine." Clove said. She was running a few paces behind him.
Emily ran along the edge until she slipped. She fell down the steep hill about forty feet down. She rolled roughly down for about thirty feet.
"Oh!" Glimmer said. "She went over."
The careers stood near the edge and looked down.
Glimmer pulled out her bow and arrows and aimed for Emily, who was still on the ground.
Emily couldn't get up after that fall right away. She rolled over and looked at the careers around her. This is it. My death. "Liam." She whispered. "I'm sorry."
Glimmer shot an arrow down, just barely missing Emily's arm. She grabbed another arrow and aimed for her again. She released the arrow and missed again.
There was a rustling in the trees nearby.
"Did you hear that?" Peeta asked.
"Another tribute." Cato said.
"But we have this one right here." Glimmer said.
"She's injured. We can get her later." Peeta said.
Cato eyed Peeta, considering it.
"She can't get far." Peeta said.
"Besides we'll need those arrows." Clove said, teasing her.
"Let's not forget who we're really after." Marvel said.
The career group and Peeta left, in pursuit of another tribute. Emily lied on the ground for a few more minutes, until she could bare getting up. She still had the backpack behind her. Emily searched the grass for the knife and quickly found it.
In District 10, Liam was watching from the mansion. After that scene, he stood up and paced the room.
"Maybe you should turn that off." Jerome said. "There will be a highlights show this evening."
"I can't do that. I-I need to know-" Liam said.
"You haven't eaten since yesterday's breakfast." Jerome said.
"I can't eat. I'm too busy worrying about her." Liam said. " I can't miss any of this. This could be the last days of her life. This could be her last day..."
"I can make you something." Jerome offered. "I'll serve it to you out here. But you need to eat. The last thing you want to pass out and miss anything."
Liam kept his eyes glue to the screen. "Yeah," he replied.
Emily found some safe food near where she fell. The bushes had red berries and there was an orange tree, full of fresh fruit. She used some small rocks nearby to get the orange down. Emily tossed them up into the tree. After a few attempts, one orange fell. She repeated this, collecting a few. She ate the first one, making that her breakfast.
Emily finally opened up the backpack. Inside was a metal water bottle, with just a few drops of water. There was some wire and gauze rolled up inside. She placed the oranges inside to backpack.
Emily put the backpack around her shoulders and held the knife in her hand. She walked down the unmarked path, hoping she was making a smart choice. The careers last saw me here so I have to move. Or is that just more risky. Will the careers even know how to get back to were I was? What if come across those tributes. What if I have to...
Then she heard something that stopped all her negative thoughts. She heard the beautiful sound of water moving.
Emily smiled as she reached a clearing and saw it for herself. "Water." She smiled.
She peeked around the area before approaching. It was pretty quiet here. The only sounds she heard were of birds chirping. Emily went over to the water and cupped her hands. She sipped the water and then washed her face. She took out the water bottle and filled it up with the fresh water.
The small pond of water had a small cave. It curled around just a bit. Emily gazed at it, getting an idea. She submerged herself in the water, smiling. It was so refreshing. It wasn't too cold. The perfect temperature.
She went into the small cave and in the corner. She was blocked off from view. A blind spot. Emily smiled and ducked in the water.
An hour later, Katniss, from District 12, came running by the pond, startling Emily. Katniss heard her and looked over quickly. She craned her head just enough to see her.
Emily covered her mouth and hid back in the corner. She ducked underwater, out of sight.
The careers ran by a few moments later, in the same direction as Katniss. Emily came up for air quietly. She covered her mouth and breathed quietly, out of sight. The careers passed by, with Emily undetected.
Realizing she couldn't sleep in the pond, Emily slowly got out of the pond at nightfall. She got out quietly, still holding that knife in hand.
Nearby the pond were some large bushes. Emily got inside the bushes slowly, to limit her noise. She took out an orange, eating that to sooth her growling stomach before going to sleep.
