Chapter 13: Unlocking The Map
"So, did you lead them to it?" The collector stepped over to the child, his steely eyes staring the young boy down.
"Yep!" He pulled his arms close in excitement. "Can I get money now?"
The old man reach into his pocket and handed over a dollar. "Of course," He stepped over to the edge of the roof, glancing down at the temple. "Without that key, the seals that hide this one are stuck, but thanks to your assistance that will no longer be an issue."
The young boy looked down at the pay. It wasn't much, but something, right?
"So tell me, child, would you like more of this green paper?" He glanced back.
"Course!" He answered with a slightly downcast voice. "What do you want me to do?"
"Just act as their guide," He answered. "That pillar of light signified that they unlocked one of the temple seals, however, according to the book, there are two more around here, from there the true seal will be revealed, and we will be able to get what we're looking for."
The young boy smiled, before giving a small salute. "You got it!" Before he turned and promptly jumped off the side of the building wasting no time grabbing onto some of the clothes lines and making his way down.
"Orders sir?" Alex clutched his rifle.
"Set up an ambush at the true seal," He answered. "If should be hidden beneath a church in the center of town, you won't be able to miss it."
With that, he turned and made his way down through the stairs, leaving the Collector to his business.
"Well my young treasure hunting rivals, let's see what you come up with."
Meanwhile…
Lincoln turned around, his eyes falling upon Jordan. "Did it work?"
Yet, Jordan shook her head. "No…"
"What do you mean?" He turned back, small sparks of energy emanating from the key. "But there was a pillar of light, we unlocked something, right?"
"Maybe…" the young woman shook her head. "But… the orb didn't budge. Last time, it flew into the light and marked that we were here or something!"
The young man stepped over and took it in his hand, spinning it for a moment, trying to get something from it… yet, nothing happened. It was as stone-cold as the day they pulled it from its resting place.
He shook his head. "I just don't get it…"
"Maybe there's something else?" Jordan stepped over and began to scan the altar. "I mean, the first seal had us do some crazy puzzle or die, remember?" She motioned with her hands. "Maybe then we're supposed to do something similar here."
"I guess," Lincoln leaned back and pulled the key from the socket. "But if so, what's the next clue? Where're we supposed to go?"
Lily stepped over the altar and grabbed on, calmly pulling herself up, before tilting her head in curiosity. "Hmm… this looks pretty!" Before she pulled out a crayon. Now, Lily never claimed to be the artist type, but when she saw something that looked like it needed coloring, she wanted to make sure that it was colored in every shade of the rainbow!
"I really should've brought more of my coloring stuff, this would be perfect for it!" With a bright smile, she began to scribble along, painting her newfound canvas. Of course, she wasn't supposed to do this- it was an ancient relic after all!
But Jordan and Lincoln were too busy talking about their dud of a map to figure it out!
"Hmm… let's see here!" Her hand moved swiftly along the groves, her crayon seemingly able to fit perfectly into the groves of the table. "Haha!"
Lincoln turned in confusion. "What's-" His eyes went wide. "Lily! What're you doing?!"
"I'm just having some fun!" She looked up with a smile. "Like! This looks great, don't ya think?" She tilted her head, before motioning towards the table, its ancient stonework defaced by pretty red crayon.
He instantly ran over and scooped up his baby sister. "No! Bad Lily! This is an ancient artifact! You're not allowed to draw on it!"
She pouted. "But why not?!"
"Because you're supposed to leave it untouched for other people to enjoy!" Jordan answered, calmly stepping over and placing a hand on her shoulder. "We're not mad, but Lily, you have to remember that other people wanna come here too! How can they enjoy it like we did if you ruin it for them?"
Lily pouted and nodded in understanding. "Ok…"
Lincoln turned. "Good, now let's-" His eyes widened once more when they fell upon the table. In the dim light of the tunnel, the red marks seemed to outline a map of sorts, with points centered around a central mark. "Lily…"
"Yeah?" Her voice was meek, as if expecting more of a berating from her brother.
"How much drawing did you do to the table?" He asked, the gears beginning to turn.
"Not much… I just followed what I could feel with my crayon…" She rubbed the back of her head..
Lily replied by giving her a hug and placing a kiss on her cheek. "Lily! You're brilliant!"
"I am?" She looked on in confusion.
"What do you see?" Jordan came to his side.
In reply, Lincoln followed the marks. "Look, it's a map of the terrain! The mountain is here, which means that these pillars…" he pointed at the small obelisks scattered around the map. "Are points we need to visit."
"But there are so many! How do we need to know which ones we'll actually have to go to?" She looked on.
Lily replied by pulling out the crayon again. "Wait! I felt a few lines leading to other ones!" before she perched herself on the table and began to feel for the grooves. It took her a moment to work, but when she finished, three were marked out, including the one they found themselves in. "Done!"
Lincoln quickly snapped a picture of it, before nodding. "Ok… So according to this map there are three outlined…" He turned. "We don't have a connection down here, so we'll have to head up," With that, he turned and bolted. "Come on you two!"
Lily and Jordan looked each other, before giving chase.
In the next moment, the trio made their way up the stairs, wasting no time running out of the temple to begin their work. Lincoln quickly began typing away on his phone, overlaying a map of the city with the one they had found in the catacombs. "All right, from what I can tell, we're here… the two remaining points are here and here…"
Jordan came on his side. "But Lincoln, we don't know this city. How are we gonna find some weird looking temple things here?"
"I can help with that!" The young boy jumped down from the rafters. "Nice seeing you again!"
"Miguel!" Lily cheerfully jumped over and gave him a tag. "Haha! Found you!"
The young boy chuckled. "Haha! You got me!" He laughed, before pulling back. "It looks like you found the temple I was tellin' you all about!"
"Yeah," Lincoln nodded. "We were wondering if you could help us find a few others too."
He rubbed his chin. "Not sure…"
Jordan spoke up. "We'll buy you McDonalds!"
The young boy's eyes went wide, before he nodded furiously. "Yeah! I'll show you to the other temples!" He paused. "Food first though."
Lily chuckled. "Haha! Just like me! I'm hungry too!"
Lincoln looked to Jordan and sighed. "All right, lunch it is!"
"So, what's it like living here?" Lily tilted her head while Miguel held his arms behind his head. "Oh, it's not much, but hey, it's a fun life! I'm around here all the time, you get to see so much!"
"But what about your family?" Jordan looked down at the kid.
"They're around too, but they're working in a shop. We don't have much, but it's enough to live off of," his voice fell slightly downcast, before he perked up again. "Anyways, where's the restaurant?"
Lincoln pulled out his phone. "From the looks of it, to the right."
The quartet turned, allowing the peculiar sight to come into view. Despite the rather rustic appearance of the rest of the block, this one building stuck out like a sore thumb, breaking the immersion of the area.
Thankfully though, it was a godsend for the three Americans on a hunt through foreign lands.
Lily skipped joyfully over to the doorway. "Come on!"
The inside was just as modern as the exterior, with all the amenities familiar to the foreigners.
If took them a few minutes to wait in line and order up, before getting their food and sitting down for a meal.
"So, you've never had a burger before?" Lily tilted her head in curiosity.
The young boy shook his head. "Nope. We could never afford to go out to eat so this is my first time…"
Jordan chuckled. "Well then, dig in and enjoy."
Slowly, Miguel leaned in a took a bike.
In the next moment, his eyes went wide, the burger's succulent taste hitting his tastebuds, before he devoured the burger, seemingly in a single bite, before making his way to the fries. He clawed through them all, leaving nothing but uneaten crumbs on his tray.
"Wow…" Lily's eyes went wide. "And I thought I was a big eater!"
Jordan chuckled. "That's adorable!" Before she put on a fond smile. "I wonder if our child will do that too…"
For a moment, Lincoln smiled as well, before hesitating. "Are you still hungry?"
He paused, opening his mouth, before shaking his head. "No!"
Lincoln pushed back and stood up. "Ok then." Before he stepped over to the counter and bought another meal, including desert for him.
"Y-you didn't have to do this…" He went.
Lincoln shook his head. "You're helping us out. The least we can do is feed ya till you're full."
He looked down, his eyes taking in the sight. He had eaten the first meal so quickly that he didn't even taste it much! And now… he was allowed to eat more?! This just couldn't be! He looked up at the trio of foreigners, all of them prodding him to continue eating. And so, he complied.
Slowly taking soft bites from his second burger, allowing the soft flavors to fill his mouth, before he nodded. "Thank you so much."
"It's not problem," Jordan gave him a nod.
"I promise, I'll make sure you get to the temples safely. I know some shortcuts! We can avoid the crowds and even get some great views on the way!" He went, his voice filling with determination.
Lily smiled, and pulled out her crayon. "Yay! Do you think there'll be a lot of good stuff to draw?"
He shrugged. "I dunno, maybe?"
With that, they continued to eat their meal, before heading out to find the last two marked temples.
