"What are you doing here?" Adam was surprised to see Jay in the office when he arrived. It was early and he would've had to leave before the crack of dawn to be here. He already had a coffee made so it wasn't like he just rocked in.
"Good morning to you too." He didn't even look up from his computer. "I heard you had a fun weekend?"
"Good news travels fast."
"How's Kim?"
Adam dropped down in to one chair and threw his laptop bag into the other. "Sore. Nothing broken though thankfully."
"And?" Jay finally looked up and cocked his eye slightly. "Angela told me about the lunch date and then you two took off to the cabin."
"Wow, can't get anything past you. Angela told you?" Adam thought that was curious, that he'd been talking to Angela already. There was something going on there he was sure of it. Not that he was good at picking up on things usually but they had both noticed something. Kim had chewed his ear off about how much 'Sally' had gushed about 'Joe' at the lunch in the car on the way to the cabin. She'd been a little giddy about it but he knew it was just her trying to stall a conversation about the real reason they were bolting.
"How'd Kim do after the lunch?" Jay repeated. He wasn't taking Adam's bait.
"She's fine Jay. She just needed to catch her breath. It's one of those things. You never quite know when it's going to sneak up and grab you by the balls, or throat or whatever…" he waved his hand. "..it just gets you some days for no particular reason. I can't explain it but we are working out how to manage it. Kim's fine."
"And?"
"I'm fine, I'm okay." Adam pushed himself up out of the chair. He needed a coffee. "You need another coffee. You must've been up early to be here already?"
"Yeah. Early bird catches the worm."
"Sure, I tell Kim that all the time." He grabbed Jay's mug and stopped by his office to grab his before heading to the kitchen to make them both a coffee. He was under strict instructions to get gossip, it was the only way he could convince her to stay at home all day. She didn't like missing out and had so little faith in him bringing home any useful information.
Depositing the coffee back on Jay's desk he casually asked. "What time will Angela be in?"
"Soon. Is Kim coming in?"
"Not today. She can't walk and she has a gut feel that Lizzie will be over to see her." They were banking on the baby drama to start ramping up. "Drew got home late last night. Kim's going to upload the security camera feed this morning."
"We've got the flight manifests and the local LEO's are sending through a report…" he looked at his watch. "..hopefully in the next hour or so. They seem to be a little less in a rush than us."
Adam disappeared into his office. He had a weekend report to write up. They were diligent in their record keeping. Everything was documented and he always wanted to get it done early. The paperwork side of being a cop wasn't what he was good at but it was a necessary evil, he'd learned that very quickly.
He then turned his attention to Harry and Kate Richmond. They had started trying to dig into them a little. Kim had reported that Lizzie seemed totally unimpressed with her when she was bought up on Saturday and the subject was changed quickly.
Flagging a couple of anomalies he made some notes. He was just about to call Kim when he saw Angela arrive. Smiling to himself he was surprised she went straight to Halstead's office, bypassing his without even looking and closing the door quickly. He picked up his phone and called Kim.
"How's the ankle?"
"I think it's getting fatter." She moaned.
"Then get off it." Adam ordered. He knew damn well that she would have be up as soon as he left the house and neglecting to make sure she elevated it. "Elevate it please."
"Yeah. Do you want the video's or not?"
"I do." Adam opened an email that just arrived and Kim could hear him tapping away and not listening to her so she waited. This wasn't unusual from him. He couldn't do two things at once. Every now and then she would just hang up on him which annoyed him no end. Kim didn't care if he was annoyed, she was willing to let him get shitty if it meant she didn't. "Hey…" he realised it wasn't anything that important. "..guess who was already here when I got here?"
"Jay?"
"Yep, and very cagey."
"That was an early start for him, to get here so early?"
"Or was it. He'd already spoken to Angela so knew about your ankle and she's just arrived and walked straight past my office and into Jay's."
"You jealous?"
Adam scoffed. "I thought you wanted details. I am giving you details."
"I do, but Babe, these aren't helpful. Why aren't you in there? You can hardly get information from your office can you?"
"I honestly don't know why I bother." Adam muttered as another email popped up. "Hey, I've gotta go. You'll send that video through soon?" Kim assured him that it was just compressing now and should be in the cloud momentarily. He signed off with his usual 'Love Ya Babe.'
Deciding that he'd given the other two long enough Adam knocked on the door and opened it without waiting and Angela jumped slightly. She had been sitting on the edge of his desk. "Sorry. Am I interrupting?" Adam grinned. "Reports in, Video's just loading now."
Angela looked a little flustered. "How's Kim today?"
"Bitching about her ankle." Adam made himself comfortable in one of the two vacant chairs. Jay hadn't got up from his desk and Angela was now leaning against the filing cabinet. "Cannot follow directions. So? Kim said that Lizzie wasn't overly enthusiastic about Kate?"
"To say the least. No love lost but she didn't give much away. Did Lizzie say much to Kim on the way home?"
"Yeah, she told Erin she knew about the baby and she was sorry. Erin didn't want to talk about it and they left it at that. Kim thinks she'll be over today sometime, that's why she didn't want to come in. Well that and the ankle makes it hard to get around, she can't drive."
"Okay." Angela nodded and then ran through the next few days. Obviously Kim's situation had to be taken into account. Even if everything else was fake, her injury wasn't. She offered to have them both over for dinner tonight, she knew Kim wouldn't like being out of the loop and it would be a good chance to get her up to speed. She also wanted to lay eyes on her, the unexpected escape to the cabin worried her a little even if Adam assured her that Kim was fine.
Adam declined and suggested tomorrow night might be better. Kim wasn't very mobile and he knew if Lizzie talked to her today she'd be a little fragile. If she was he didn't want Angela to see that, Kim was already worried that people doubted her and she would do anything to hide her rough patches. He was always going to be protective of Kim first and foremost and now he felt that more keenly than ever.
Angela was sceptical regarding his reasons, that Kim needed to keep her foot up and stay off it but he knew she would've been on it all day and he wanted to make sure she rested it tonight. Tomorrow was a better option and it would be nice to relax and catch up and be themselves for a while. Touching base with their real life would be good.
Watching the video gave them nothing more than confirmation of time. Drew had driven to the airport himself and picked up Harry, he dropped him off a little after 10pm and pulled into his own driveway a few minutes later. There were no lights on at home, Lizzie had obviously gone to bed, not bothering to wait up for her husband and he left on time the following morning, 730 like clockwork.
Adam left them to it. He had a few phone calls to make. He did note that it was a good two hours before Angela emerged from Jay's office. Kim would surely be proud of him for knowing that much at least.
