Thanks for the reviews guys! This really helps me write with more fun and enthusiasm. Now I want to address a couple of things, some of you have been commenting on or wondering about.
Harry's state of injury
It's been about 3 months now in the story, he's healing really well guys. Trust me, I've had my fair share of knee related problems. However, Harry's injury is healing but it's no muggle injury, the operation and rehab are helping but the lingering curse damage is what's still causing problems and will keep causing a few problems for a little while longer. I hope that clears some of your confusion up. I personally feel like magic can't heal everything and our protagonist has been through and is still going through enough and that's where my story focusses on.
Thanks to those who've commented on my writing and that I'm portraying characters right. It's really lovely to hear, especially when I feel like I struggle writing some of them.
Hope to keep you all interested and enjoying this story!
A couple of days later Harry had spotted Ermyr as soon as he entered the great hall, just as with Hedwig, Harry had a great connection with Ermyr as well. The owl was always there when Harry needed him and Harry always knew when he was nearby. Harry tried to avoid looking up, to surprise his friends but Ginny's keen eye- and to be fair, Ermyr had extraordinary colours and with the large package he was hard to miss.
"Luv, look up." Ginny stated with a nod towards Ermyr. Harry smirked and winked at Ginny as he easily followed his owl when it landed smoothly on the table in front of him with the package. Harry immediately thanked the owl and gave him a couple strips of bacon in appreciation, Ermyr nibbled on his left ear in return and flew away. Harry glanced at his delivery. The package itself was admirable on its own. It was a dark travel case, embossed with black shimmery HJP at the top. Ginny, Ron and even Hermoine starred at it in awe. "Open it!" Ron exclaimed, not able to keep his excitement. Harry smirked and unclasped the box and opened it, inside- fitted perfectly in a black foam was Harry's new broom, the Firebolt II. It's hilt was a dark walnut, near black with a matt finish and a glossy tip, the bristles were neatly trimmed (and brand new of course) and it's tips shimmered golden in the light. On the glossy tip Harry's initials were once more engraved.
"Wow." Ron stated as he glanced over the broom. Ginny as well was speechless, Hermoine was even interested, "I've never seen that before." She stated.
Harry grinned, "That's highly possible, seeing as its not out yet." Ginny and Ron immediately glanced up at Harry, "How'd you mean?" Ginny asked curious.
"I might've asked the Firebolt company for this personally. Seeing as I do have an impairment that will probably be with me my whole life, I asked them for advice. They replied that they had been working on a new model for a couple of years now, but that they would gladly help me in getting my so-called 'wings' back. I guess they work fast." Harry explained as he took in his broom before looking back up at his friends.
"Harry, that is amazing!" Ginny replied with a genuine smile.
"It's a tall one too, even longer than mine." Ron stated and that was true, it was a very long broom but that was something Harry had asked for. He'd been practicing flying for a couple of days now in private, to send everything he needed towards the Firebolt company. Like Ron had mentioned on the first day, he really had outgrown his old firebolt and with his – although slightly – limited range of motion, Harry noticed he was a lot more comfortable flying with his legs nearly straight, so that he was nearly lying flat along the hilt; so that's what he asked for. He'd send the company his measurements and told them about his feelings and experience flying now and here before him lay the result.
"It's an interesting one." Ginny replied as she studied it, she took in the curvature of the hilt and the way the footrests were built. It was immediately obvious that Harry had something to do with the design, she'd seen him tweak his broom in the past couple of days- years really- to try and find a position perfect for flying not even mentioning that he now had to take into consideration that his injured leg needed to be comfortable. It seemed he figured it out. "I want to see it fly." Ginny replied with a manic grin that was all Ginny Weasley. Harry nodded in enthusiasm and grabbed the broom out of the box and waved his hand at the box, making it disappear.
They walked outside into the courtyard and watched Harry and his new broom. The Firebolt II floated up to a perfect mounting height, a feature unique to the Firebolt brooms. Harry easily slid on top and placed his feet in the rest, the new position fit like a glove to Harry's new physical frame and impairment. Harry softly pushed off, but the acceleration of the broom was unsurpassed by any known broom on the market. After his initial zoom, Harry quickly got the speed under control and practiced a couple of turns and manoeuvres typical to a quidditch seeker before starting his decline. From the ground Ginny and Ron starred up in shock, whilst Hermoine had looked on in horror at how fast Harry had flown on the Firebolt II. That initial acceleration was beyond what was needed for a simple game of quidditch at Hogwarts. When Harry returned to the ground and dismounted his broom he was all smiles from ear to ear, at that moment no one would know that Harry even had a lifelong injury.
Ginny approached Harry and kissed him soft and quickly. "That was bloody amazing." She sighed into the kiss. "Brilliant is more like it." Ron replied as he grinned along his sister and best friend, "How does it go so fast?" Ron asked in amazement.
"It's part design, part spell work, part me. It's supposed to be the fastest broom ever made." Harry replied confidently. "Do you want have a go?" Harry asked, knowing how much Ron wanted to try it out. He eagerly nodded and went his way, same like Harry, he flew a couple of minutes before returning to the ground. He hadn't been nearly as fast as Harry. "That's an odd experience, mate. It's definitely a broom fit for you. I'm not too sure about it's built for a keeper."
Harry nodded, "It's definitely built with a seeker in mind, Gin- you want to have a go?" he asked his girlfriend who smiled broadly.
"Absolutely." Ginny replied and same like her brother before her, but more like Harry she flew the hell out of that broom. It was however immediately cut short, when she went through a couple of manoeuvres and immediately noticed that the length would never work for her small stature. "That's a wicked broom, Harry. But it's much too large for me." Ginny stated as she handed the broom back to Harry.
Harry smiled and kissed Ginny on forehead with a chuckle. "Good thing, as it's my broom." He teased, but immediately softened his grin. "I figured, you could have my old Firebolt- seeing as I've got no use for it anymore." He said softly, but loud enough that Ron and Hermoine had overheard it. Hermoine shared a knowing glance with Ron, before turning back towards the conversation that was unfolding before them.
"Harry, Sirius gave you that broom. It's very special to you, I don't want to ride it with risk of damaging it." Ginny replied concerned.
Harry smiled softly at her, "I don't care if that broom gets wrecked. It supposed to fly, Sirius bought that for me knowing I'd fly if for years to come. He couldn't have predicted a leg injury, much less a grow spurt." Harry teased, making all of them chuckle. "I want it to fly and I know that it's in good hands with you, Sirius would probably agree."
Ginny's eyes held tears in them, but she didn't let one drop. "Ok. Thank you so much, it's really thoughtful of you- my old Cleansweep was in need of retirement." Harry smiled at her before turning his gaze towards Ron. "Ron, I-…"
"Save it, Harry. I'm not jealous. Believe it or not, I have grown up and learned from my mistakes." Ron replied in advance, shocking everyone.
"That's great, Ron. But you've got a new Nimbus 3000 on arrival. Since I bought mine also with future use as auror in mind, I figured you could use a step up from your old broom as well." Harry replied with a smirk.
Ron stared at Harry in shock, "What, really? How, When, Why?" He stammered out.
Harry grinned and hugged his best friend. "Because your my best friend Ron, and you've given me everything I could ever dream off. You've given me a best friend, a family and future wife, a future sister-in-law." Harry replied with a chuckle towards Hermoine as he let go of Ron. "A broom is nothing in comparison to that… you deserve a good broom and I'll know you'll take good care of it." He finished.
"Thank you, Harry. That's really kind of you and you know- you've given me a best friend too." Ron replied.
"Alright, enough sentimentalities. I want to do a little pick-me-up quidditch, who's in?" Ginny asked with a smirk.
"Not to rain on your parade, but you, Harry and I have got Herbology in a few minutes and I'm pretty sure Ron has Ancient Runes tutoring." Hermoine stated, obviously knowing all of their schedules by heart.
Groaning, they all walked back towards the castle and on their way towards their classes. "You better have time for a pick-me-up game later, Potter." Ginny teased as they walked back.
Harry chuckled, "You are on, Weasley."
"Alright, thank you all for coming to try-outs. First, I'd like to inform you of the changes that have been implied by Headmistress McGonagall. We are to have a substitute team, the Gryffindor team has had this unofficially for the past two years however now all teams are forced to have three to five substitute players. This team will also be called the junior team, as you can see around you many first and second years are present today as well; with the implementation of the substitute team the governors of Hogwarts have agreed that this would be the opportune moment to give the youngsters a chance to engage in quidditch try-outs and gain proper experience. Now the fun part about the junior team will be its use, you won't just be there for back-up during the match game, a captain can decide however and whenever to use her substitutes… meaning if you have the potential of the main team, but we're short on positions- you can still be playing during matches. All positions are open, give me all you've got and you might take a spot." Ginny said as captain of the quidditch team as she watched the number of students in front of her. There were a lot, so try-outs were going to be long. First she divided the 1st and 2nd years from the rest, if they were to get on the team, it was to be as substitutes so she wanted to let them play along and or against the rest of the chosen team after they were picked. The chaser positions were quickly filled, seeing as Ginny herself as captain played in that position, together with Katie Bell and Jackson Sheppard. Keeper was easy, Ron was still very good if not better than before. Beaters were a bit more difficult as a couple younger years that were better than the now 8th years, but Ginny wasn't captain for nothing; she wanted a strong team. She chose Kelly Harborne, a 6th year and Asher Rookwood a 4th year for Beaters. Last, but definitely not least were the seekers. There were 4 students fighting for this position which was a miracle in itself, seeing as previous years knew that when Harry was on the team you wouldn't stand a chance. But, with him being gone for a year and now returning, injured- which most of them knew; even if they didn't know the extent of it. Harry was the only 8th year though, there were two 5th years boys and one 1st year girl.
"Alright Seekers. You are up, 1st year you can immediately join in so I can see your potential for the junior team." Ginny yelled as all seekers got in position around the field and box which held all the quidditch balls. It was noticeable that all players were nervous but just one of them for different reasons. The three younger years were nervous, because somehow they only now realized that they were up against THE Harry Potter- Gryffindor's star Seeker; which wasn't odd; Harry on his new broom, lying flat along the hilt- really was something to behold. Whilst Harry was nervous for his position, there was no guarantee that he would be on his best game today, he'd been training hard for the past week but that week didn't feel like nearly enough time. "The rules are simple, show me your skills and catch the snitch. On my whistle." Ginny said as she released the snitch and let it fly well out of sight before blowing her whistle. Immediately all four players were off. Ginny forced herself not to watch Harry too much, she didn't want others to think she was playing favourites with her boyfriend. So she focused on the 5th year boys first. They seemed decent flyers, but after an hour both were starting to tire and float around- not actively searching for the snitch… it was at this time that she though it to be safe to divide her attention towards Harry and the 1st year. The 1st year was actively searching for the snitch still, she didn't seem tired and she was showing off remarkable flying techniques. Ginny then sought out Harry, but she couldn't spot him- confused she herself flew a couple of circles wondering where Harry was when she heard an applause from the audience and team members below. She quickly turned around, when she saw that Harry suddenly zoomed in, his left hand wrapped around the tiny golden ball. Ginny chuckled in unbelieve and blew her whistle ending the seeker try-out.
"Well done, Seekers. You all did a good job out there, however I think that the best possible choice is for Mr. Potter to take the team Seeker position once again- seeing as he has caught the snitch without me even noticing him flying around the field at all. Well done, Mr. Potter and the rest of you. Thanks to everyone that showed up here today. I've also already decided who will be our substitute team: Demelza Robins, Chaser; Vicky Frobisher, Keeper; Louise Fontwell and Tamsin Twycross, Beaters and lastly Theodora Griffins, Seeker. Congratulations. All five of you are to show up for each training and be suited up for each game. Let's make our house proud!" Ginny said as they all congratulated each other, luckily there were no hard feelings from those that didn't make the team. All students started to go for the changing lockers, whilst Harry, Ginny and Ron hung back.
"I can't believe how fast you caught that snitch when you finally spotted it. Bloody hell, you were quick." Ron replied in awe at his best friends performance. Harry smiled at him, grateful that he'd done well during the tryouts and was on the quidditch team once more. However, he did notice that his body felt the effects of the exercise. Ginny grabbed his right hand and squeezed it, "I'm glad you did, you deserve to be my seeker." She said sultry, making Harry blush a bit.
"You didn't even watch him fly." Ron replied with a chuckle.
"What?" Harry asked shocked and glanced from Ron to his girlfriend. "Really?"
"I was trying to show everyone that I didn't favor my boyfriend." Ginny replied annoyed by her brother, but glared at Harry when he chuckled, "I had it all planned out. I would give the 5th year boys my attention first, to see if they had potential, before turning towards you and Thea… but just when I switched whom to watch you had already caught the snitch- I didn't even see you fly."
Harry shrugged, "It's a good thing that you didn't. That wasn't my best flying work."
Ron groaned, "Give it up, Harry. It certainly wasn't your worst either. You're getting better, you haven't flied on a broom in what… 12 months? Apart from flying 10 feet through the Room of Requirement."
"Ron is right Harry. Don't beat yourself up over this, you're recovering from a serious injury- and you outflew all seekers today even a healthy and tiny 1st year that was really on top of her game. You were still better, your experience and natural flying skill are still good for a friendly game of school Quidditch and that's enough for now." Ginny said as she assured Harry and dragged him into the locker room.
Inside Madam Pomfrey and Professor Weasley were waiting for them. "At last. Some of us have work to do you know." Charlie stated with a grin.
"Mandatory health check Mr. Potter, come along." Poppy said as she gestured towards the healer's room near the left. Harry hung his head a bit and followed Poppy, followed by Charlie. Once they were in the healer's room Poppy gestured towards the cot, "Lay down, Mr. Potter."
Harry heaved himself on top of the cot and laid down with a bit of a grunt. His body was sore, he would admit that.
"How are you feeling Harry?" Charlie asked concerned as he watched the school healer spell diagnostic charms.
"Sore, but I had been training all morning too." Harry said as he looked from Charlie to Poppy.
"How is the flying going? Any additional pain in your leg?" Charlie asked.
"Flying is going pretty good, actually. Better than I'd hoped. Part of it is due to the new broom, it's a lot more comfortable flying the Firebolt II than any other broom. I do still have moments where my leg just doesn't respond to my commands." Harry replied honestly as Poppy finished her spell work.
"I don't see any new damage in or near your knee. However, I also don't see any progress. Your leg is a bit swollen now, but we've noticed this happening with all exercises. So I'm not worried about flying in particular." Poppy said as she grabbed an icepack and lowered it on Harry's knee. Harry groaned a bit as his knee was aggravated by the cold when first connected, but soon it was soothing some of the pain. "As you know you have lasting curse damage in that leg, the only question is how much it will heal over time. Now when you say your leg doesn't work… does it go completely numb?" Poppy asked concerned.
"Sometimes, it's either that or it locks up." Harry replied as Poppy hummed. "But the broom helps with both. I've designed the footrests to keep my leg from falling off the broom, that in addition to locking the brace in position has so far deemed like a good way to fly longer periods of time."
Poppy shared a look with Charlie before nodding towards Harry, "Alright. Thank you for being honest Mr. Potter. I want to keep doing this for the first couple of trainings and the first match, so we can keep track of your health. I don't want to see a setback."
Harry nodded, "Neither do I."
"Good. Keep the ice on for a couple more minutes and use that icing balm tonight. Should the swelling not recede, come see me at once. Otherwise, you are good to go." Poppy said as she packed up her stuff and left. Harry stared at Charlie for a few minutes who grinned at him, "You were bloody brilliant out there, you know. That broom of yours is something else."
Harry chuckled, "You want to fly it sometime?"
Charlie stared at Harry with his mouth open, "You mean that?"
"Yeah, I heard you were a terrific flyer back in the day. I'd love to see you fly sometime." Harry replied. Charlie grinned, "Terrific… you mean bloody epic. I'd love a seekers duel, when you're up for it."
Harry chuckled, "I'd have to talk to my captain, but I'm sure we can work something out."
Charlie ruffled Harry's hair and laughed, "You do that, lover boy." He then exited the room.
A bit of a short chapter, but I wanted to give you an update. Do you guys like short chapters, or should I wait till I have more to upload? Let me know.
