The headquarters of the Black Bulls was a little quieter than usual, even with Asta going around greeting everybody. Not surprising, considering what had happened just the night before. Asta seemed fine, but that didn't really say anything about the actual situation. Asta always seems fine, even if everything is most definitely not fine. While being like that is great for when things get tough, everybody in the squad knew that it definitely wasn't great for Asta himself. For all he says about unbreakable determination, friendship, and the fact that "even if you're poor, even if you're a peasant, you can make it in this world", Asta himself wasn't exactly unbreakable. He was just as fragile as everybody else. Everybody knew that well, especially after that arm incident. But in the squad, however, there was one person who seemed to not really give a shit about any of this, and unsurprisingly, it was the captain.
"Uh, guys?", Yami said.
The room went completely silent, all eyes now on the captain.
"Oh, uh…", Yami seemed a bit shocked, "It's usually just… that I'd usually have to yell several times and break something for you guys to actually respond to me… I'm… surprised."
Vanessa chuckled as Yami cleared his throat and continued.
"Well, as you know, just for today, select members of The Golden Dawn are going to be joining us for training with the Spirit Guardians..."
"Wait... what?", said everybody almost in unison.
Yami scratched his chin in confusion.
"Uh… did I not tell you guys this yesterday…?"
Everybody stared at Yami with a blank expression. Even Charmy stopped eating for a bit.
"Oh yeah…", Yami snorted awkwardly, "...that thing happened last night so I couldn't tell you guys. Well, who cares, even if it's a surprise, it's good news, isn't it?"
"Is it though?", said Finral to himself, quietly. Nevertheless, Yami could hear it.
"Anything you want to say, Finral?", said Yami, standing up from his stool.
"Uh… no, not really, I agree, it's good news, good news."
"Good."
Yami sat back down, to Finral's relief.
After everything settled back to normal, Yami took a cigarette, put it in his mouth, and lit the end with a lit candle. Hot wax dripped all over the wooden bar table as he did so, garnering some very confused expressions from his subordinates.
He breathed in deeply and breathed out a plume of smoke.
"Hah… not only does the queen of this place let our entire squad come here to train, she even lets us station our base here? And now she's even letting in another squad… and that thing with 'Asta's father'..."
Yami sucked on his cigarette some more, then breathed out some more smoke.
"Everything smells fishy… what a weird feeling..."
Yami sighed, resting his forehead on his forearm.
"Hey, Captain Yami, everything alright?"
It was Vanessa. Yami thought that it was sweet that she was worried about him, but this situation was out of her hands. Hell, it was even out of his hands. The only person that could've done anything about this was the Wizard King, and he was pretty much out of commission.
"Yeah, everything's fine," Yami smiled softly, taking Vanessa by surprise, "Real sweet of you to worry like that. I think you just made my day."
Vanessa blushed.
"...Thanks."
Well, I've been gone for a little while. But I'm back.
