Chapter 9:

The Next Day

Jess sat on her couch. She had barely slept the entire night. She was sick to her stomach. Not just because of the alcohol which was more likely the culprit of the vomiting for the past hour but also because of what happened with Don.

Jess felt her stomach jump again and made a mad dash for the bathroom.

She appeared 20 minutes later. "I haven't see you like this since we were young and stupid" Abby said coming out of her bedroom.

"Tequila" Jess replied crashing on the couch

"How are you planning on making it through your 12 hour shift that starts in two hours?" Abby asked

"No idea" Jess said feeling her stomach luge again "But I got to"

"Good luck with that" Abby laughed

Jess sighed and let her head fall back "Did I wake you" she asked

"No, I'm heading in early. Got a parent teacher conference before classes today" Abby said. She taught first grade. "Are you going to be ok? Cause you could call in sick."

Jess couldn't deny the thought hadn't crossed her mind. She was so hungover she didn't know how she would be able to deal with dead bodies but mostly she just wanted to avoid Flack.

"I think I've messed things up," Jess admittied "I may have lost my best friend tonight."

Jess stood at the crime scene convinced that the universe was playing some kind of karmic joke on her. One that she did not find the least bit funny. Not only did she feel like she was dying with the headache, dry mouth, and sick stomach coustry of tequila. She had been assigned to her first big profile case, Pauline Rayburn, the councilman's wife. And to make it worse, the body was an actual freaking mummy.

"What do we have?" Mac asked entering the half demolished building that was their crime scene.

And then there was the fact it was Mac that was working the case with her. Not Lindsay, Danny or Hawkes who would have to be feeling some of the effects of last night but instead she got Mac who was like her boss.

"We believe it's Pauline Rayburn. The clothing fits the description of the last thing she was wearing before she went missing over three weeks ago" Jess said trying not to breathe in too deeply. Her stomach made another jump and it took everything she had, not to throw up all over the crime scene.

"You okay?" Mac asked

"It's my first mummy. Dehydrated flesh takes some getting used to." Jess said she left out the hangover part. Mac nodded at her in understanding. He knew that his team and many detectives had a hard night last night. He smirked to himself, his respect growing for Jess that she was there and being a professional. She could have easily taken a sick day. "There's no evidence that tells us how she got here, or how long her body's been in the building." Jess continued.

Mac lifted something from the rubble. Jess leaned in to get a better look even though she was dying inside this case intriguing and now she was on it she was all in. "Her husband wears a matching claddagh wedding band. Jess commented once she recognized what Mac had picked up.

"Let's not share this information with the press just yet. I don't want this crime scene turning into a backdrop for the evening news. Till we officially ID the vic, everything is unofficial" Mac said

"Should I notify councilman Rayburn? He's still our primary suspect in connection with his wife's disappearance." Jess asked

"Just follow proper procedure" Mac told her

She knew that well enough after spending almost a year with Benton.

"Who found her?" Mac continued.

"A wrecking ball operator saw what he thought was a body flying across the room." Jess answered

"No one checked the building before they started demolition?" Mac asked

"The construction foreman said that the structure was cleared and ready to be torn down. Rest of the building's been empty and has been for the last few weeks." Jess said

"Do you know what was on that wall?" Mac asked standing up and walking over towards the giant hole in the wall.

"What do you mean?" Jess asked following him.

"Any item, color, distinctive markings that would make it easy to find. Because somewhere down there in all that mess is part of our crime scene." Mac said as they both looked out onto the city.

"I'll see what I can find" Jess said

Jess walked into the lab looking for Mac. They were getting ready to pick up the known crook, Sal Bovado. She had the bench warrant in hand.

Jess spotted Lindsay in reconstructed, she didn't look much better than Jess. Jess poked her head in "Hey Lindsay"

"Oh you look better than me" Lindsay commented. Her day hadn't been the easiest after the late night she had.

"That's because I've been dying since four this morning. There is nothing left inside of me" Jess said. Only admitting how sick she was to Lindsay because she was in the exact boat. "And I've been at my crime scene since 10 with an actual freaking mummy and Mac."

"I had to crawl down a tiny tunnel with my stomach jumping every move I made. I never considered myself claustrophobic until now" Lindsay said

"This is your fault you know. The last two shots were all you" Jess said

"Ha-ha" Lindsay replied "The last shot was me, the one before that was your idea."

"Never again" Jess said

"Never ever again" Lindsay agreed

"So Linds" Jess said, getting to the real reason she had dropped in on her friend. "Flack is working the Holly case with you"

"Yes" Lindsay smiled. Something had happened between Angell and Flack last night she didn't know what but he had been in the car with her earlier and confided in her that he had done something stupid and mess things up with Jess but he wouldn't say anthing more than that "is there something you wanted to ask"

Jess hesitated for a moment. She had been so busy today she had barely spent a moment at the station and had only seen Flack in passing. Her plan had been to avoid him anyways that was the one good thing about this case...it made that possible. She wanted to ask Linds, did he say anything about me, but that sounded to high school so she decided "Is he as sick as us?"

"Maybe worse" Lindsay said not physically but definitely emotionally, Lindsay thought.

"Angell" Mac called "got the warrant?'

Jess held it up "let's go check out Bovado." Mac said

Jess waved to Lindsay and followed Mac out of the lab and down to the avalanche so they could check out their prime suspect.

Jess sat on the bench in the locker room. The day was finally over. She had survived just barely. If Mac hadn't grabbed her when he did in Bovado's apartment...she shuddered at the thought. Her ribs still ached from how tight Mac had grabbed her but she was thankful he did. She also felt stupid for missing the trip wired. In the end, they were able to arrest Matthew Rayburn and charge him with his wife's death that made all the suffering she had done during the day worth it.

"Hey," Flack said, coming into the locker room to see Jess sitting on the bench. She looked lost in thought.

"Hey" Jess replied back. "How's Linds?" Maka had told her about Lindsay going undercover in order to save the hostage and stop a very dangerous man, Mosi Ghed.

"Danny took her home" Flack said "she's fine"

Jess nodded thankful her friend was okay. "How about you?' Don asked. He had heard from Mac that she had been inches from being shot...if he hadn't grabbed her…. Don couldn't even think about the what ifs. He couldn't imagine his life without Jess and that thought scared him too.

"Stiff but fine" Jess replied

They sat for a few moments in awkward silence, something new for their relationship. "Jess, I think we should talk." Don said, finally breaking the silence.

"I think we have too" Jess replied, "But not today. I just need to sleep. It's been a rough day. Tomorrow at the bench in the park before shift. K?"

Don nodded "K." He got up and headed towards the door "Hey Angell" he called

She turned her head to face him "I'm really glad you are ok."
