Chapter 10: Coventions

"Stop! You're killing me!" Luz screams.

"Then me and joey lit the firecracker, placed it in the toilet, and rushed out." The group were rolling in laughter, "And who walks in right after we leave? The principal!"

Eda was holding her side, tears in her eyes, "Then what happened?"

"Well we we're called to the principal's office. When me and my friend got there, the principal was wearing a whole new suit and reeked of toilet water. We may have got detention for a month but it was worth it."

The group's mirthful joy echoed on the empty streets of the Bones-borough Bazaar.

"Thanks for the story kid," Eda said before looking around for potential customers "I swear did everyone catch a plague or something? Where is everybody?"

"Maybe today is some kinda magical confluence or something," Luz added.

"No, today is coven day. So everyone's probably at the coven convention." Mason had picked up Luz's copy of book five of the Good Witch Azura book. He had thumbed half way through it but wanted to finish as soon as possible, because Luz was dying to talk spoilers.

"Coven convention? I want to go to the coven convention!" Luz exclaimed, shaking from excitement wearing a huge grin.

"Absolutely not!" Eda shouted slamming her fist on the table.

Luz shoulder sagged in disappointment "But, why?"

"Because you're my student and I don't need you being tainted by coven life. It's bad enough that Mason has an Emperor's Coven teacher."

"Hey, my 'teacher' regrets having me as a pupil enough for the both of us." Mason jabbed.

Eda howled, "You've become a lot more fun since the incident. What happened?"

I decided you can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar "You've really grown on me, Eda."

"Like a lovable aunt," Eda said, puffing her chest in pride.

More like a tumor Mason thought. He was glad he trained himself to stomach the Owl Lady. After saving Luz from the Eda's beast form, Mason had earned a place in her good books. I'd have to be an idiot to not seize this opportunity.

"C'mon Eda, just one day at the coven convention. Pretty please." Luz grabbed Eda's hand and looked her in the eyes.

"Luz, my decision is final." Eda swatted her hand away.

"Ow, ow, my hand! I think it still hurts from when your claws dug into it. Oh the pain." Luz said in an exaggerated tone.

"Okay, okay, fine. I'll let you go. But I'm not gonna be happy about it." Eda crossed her arms and turned from her student.

Mason tapped the Owl Lady's shoulder and leaned her down so he could whisper in her ear, "Psst, Eda? Why are you so mad. You're not Seeing the opportunity in front of you."

Eda's ears perked up when Mason said this "Do tell?"

"We could prank all those Coven jerks," Mason replied, already forming ideas on how to get back at Lilith by ruining her key note speech at the convention.

"Mason my boy, you are the most dastardly coven twerp I have ever had the pleasure to meet. I like the way you think."

"High praise from a coven scab like you."

"I would say that I've become a bad influence on you, but that would imply that you weren't this wicked before I met you." Eda wore a mischievous grin.

"if anything you've made me soft, old lady. I use to get into a lot more trouble before I had to worry about you being a crutch."

"A crutch? Is that a jab at my curse?"

"It might've been."

"C'mere you little rascal." Eda grappled Mason into a headlock and began twisting her knuckle on the top of his bowed head. "Say auntie, say it!"

"You mean uncle, and no!" Mason said, struggling against Eda's grasp.

As the duo laughed at their game. Luz watched them play with a smile. "I am thankful that you two are getting along, but can we go now?"

Eda released Mason with a chuckle. "Yeah we can go."

"When we're done with this dumb convention, I want a rematch old woman."

"Anytime babyface," Eda replied, sticking her tongue out.

The trio made their way to the convention center saw a horde of coven hopefuls lined up.

"This line's gonna take forever," Eda groaned, slumping over. Instantly perking up Eda leaned down to whisper in Mason's ear "Wanna learn a real life lesson?"

"What would that be?"

"How to pick pocket." Eda said, looking around to make sure no one was listening.

"Sure I'd love t–" Mason felt a sharp pain take over his head as a bell rang. "Excuse me for a second I need to–ah– go to the bathroom." Mason walked away from a confused Eda and when he was out of sight he focused on the ringing. "What!?" he called in his head knowing this was a message spell and one that was supposed to be intentionally painful.

"Meet me behind the convention center, immediately." Lilith's voice replied to the boys question. She sounded irritated.

When isn't she irritated. He thought after hanging up the call. Mason walked toward the back of the convention center. Agitated that his day with Luz and the Owl Lady was interrupted. When he went to back he saw Lilith she was wearing her usual black dress but this time she also had Emperor's Coven White cloak and bird mask.

"I'm guessing you had trouble following my instruction. Why am I not surprise?" She said, eyeing Mason up and down.

"Why am I here?" Mason asked.

"So direct. No hello for your first teacher. I guess you think you're a big shot after being given a mission."

"It's not my fault that you couldn't get the job done."

Lilith shot towards Mason grabbing him by the shoulder and slamming him against the wall "Don't you dare talk down to me. You insolent worm!" She held him by his throat.

"You gonna kill me or not? If so, do it, or are you gonna tell me why you wanted to speak to me after a month of silence?"

"I want your help in talking my sister into joining the Emperor's coven."

"Why me? She's your sister."

"Because I see how close you are to her. She trusts you and you will help me."

"If I refuse?"

"Then the Emperor will never find your body after I'm done with you."

"Yes, threats. That's exactly how you get what you want," Mason replied.

"Don't get flippant with m–" A glob of spit landed on Lilith's cheek. The witch snarled and summoned a fireball in her free hand. "You little human whelp. I'm gonna–" the witches hand mirror rang.

"I'd answer that if I were you," Mason snipped, showing a toothy grin.

Lilith released the boy and answered the phone seeing that it was Kikimora, "What is it!?"

"You wouldn't happen to be threatening Mason, would you?" Kikimora asked.

Lilith froze and was silent for but a moment "N-no I was just having a discussion with him is all."

"It is good to know that. The seers that work for the Oracle Coven must have read the omens incorrectly." Kikimora's tone showed that she knew Lilith was lying. "What were you talking about?"

"I was requesting that he help talk my sister into joining the Emperor's Coven."

"Ah yes, the omens did say that you would do that. I regret to inform you that would be impossible."

"What!? Why!?" Lilith exclaimed, fighting to not break the hand mirror.

"The seers advised the Emperor against letting you talk Mason into that course of action because it would not work and the only thing it would accomplish would be blowing Mason's cover. So, your request for Mason's aid is denied. Good-bye," the image of Kikimora cut out and Lilith slammed the device down shattering it. She grunted in the rage stomping the mirror.

"Wow, Lilith calm down. At your age we don't want you to have a heart attack." Mason said, trying to suppress his joy.

Lilith glared at the boy and walked toward him threateningly. "You're still going to help me."

"No!" Mason replied, "And you heard what she told you. Emperor says I don't have to help you, so Nyeh." Mason stuck out his tongue.

"Why you little. how dare you defy me," She said grabbing his head sinking her nails into his face.

"I wouldn't do that Lilith. Kikimora would be suspicious if I ended up scarred or worse... dead."

Lilith released the boy again and stomped off. "I would watch your back, boy! You may be favored by the Emperor but I can still make your life difficult. So stay out of my way!" Lilith disappeared inside the convention center back door.

As Mason picked himself back up "Same to you." he made his way back to Luz and the Owl Lady and saw that they were near the front of the line.

"There a spot for me, Ladies?" He asked tapping Luz on the shoulder.

"Maybe for a song." Eda replied.

"I'm sorry but I don't sing for old birds." He quipped.

"Get in here smart mouth." Eda said, making room for Mason in line.

"You know I had my doubts about you kid. But, I'm glad to be your teacher."

"You? My teacher? You haven't taught me a thing! You must be losing your marbles."

"I didn't have many to begin with, Ha."

"Hey!" a voice called from under the trios feet.

Mason looked down and was a familiar demon dog glaring up at him. "Oh King, did we forget you?"

"Yes, I was napping with my crown and when I woke up you were gone." the dog whimpered.

Luz wrapped the demon in a hug and lifted him up to her face "We're so sorry. We'll never do it again." she proceeded to kiss him on the cheek multiple times.

"Okay all is forgiven. Just don't do it again." King grumbled but didn't seem to mind Luz carrying him. He then reached inside his bag and placed his crown on his head. "Don't I look stylish?"

"You're welcome for that by the way." Mason added.

"Thanks? For a servant? Ha, surely you jest?"

"Screw you King." Mason said, blunt.

The demon dog snickered and covered his mouth.

"So Mason? How's about you show me around?" Luz asked nudging Mason with her elbow.

"Sure Luz. I'd love to." the two humans were at the front of the line before too long. and the doors to the convention center opened. Luz and Mason immediately ran into the convention center and were assailed with the sights and sounds of the coven world.

"Wow, have I even been alive since before now?"

"I was gonna ask the same thing." Even Mason was impressed. He was stuck in the castle and had only experience coven exposure during meetings that were set up by the Emperor.

The duo made their way to the Construction Coven and saw a bunch of muscular men with stickers on their hand.

"Who are they?" Luz asked, eyes growing wide.

"Their the Construction Coven," Mason replied "You see those stickers on their arms?" he said pointing to one of the men.

"Yeah are they accessories or something."

"Yeah accessories that amplify the magical abilities of those who wear them. They are power runes and only the builders are allowed to use them. Well, them and the Emperor's Coven."

"Yowza-wowza." Luz said amazed.

"Yowza-wowza" a blue version of Luz repeated behind her.

"I see the illusionist coven is here." Mason said.

Eda walked through the coven masses and came upon her students. "There you are. You left me at the gate! You little brats, this is the thanks I get for letting you come."

"We're sorry mama." Mason gave Eda a hug and cuddled his face into her stomach. "pwease don't be mad at us," he cooed.

"Smart ass. Just for that, you're off the hook," she chuckled.

"Hey Eda, why did you never join a coven?"

` The Owl Lady sighed and slapped her palm to her forehead. "Look over there." where Eda pointed there was a kid joining the illusionist coven and was just getting his brand. "Now that kid can only do illusion magic and that's it!" Eda used both her hands to summon fire and ice "Me on the other hand. I have access to every form of magic. Stick with me kids and you will be able too as well."

"Luz Look!" King Called running towards the human girl. He was holding a small tote bag full of stuff. "The people of this convention really know how to give offerings to their King of Demons."

"Aww, he is so cute when he's happy," Luz cooed, going to give King a hug.

Mason chuckled to think a month ago I thought I'd never be happy again. Luz is a miracle worker. I would literally do anything for her.

"Aaah! My offerings!" King shouted.

This drew Mason attention and he saw a pink-skinned girl with three-eyes holding the demon dog's tote bag over his head out of reach.

"Hey give it back." Luz called reaching for the tote bag but getting pushed down in the process.

"Hey! Tri-clops! Why don't you try that on m–" Mason barreled toward the Bully but was cut off by a familiar green haired witch. "Oh hey Amity. What do you want?"

"Don't hey Amity me. I told you to stop hanging out with these losers. This is what you get for not listening." Amity said, jabbing her finger menacingly into Mason's chest.

"No m-my crown!" The tri-clops had the crown in her hands taunting King.

"Get out of my way." Mason tried to push Amity but she placed her hand on his chest.

"I wouldn't do that if I were you."

"Why is that?"

Amity pointed to where Luz was being held up by two of Amity's goons they had her arms in a tight bind. The human girl squirmed, but looked to be In pain.

"Let her go! Now!" Mason snarled, grinding his teeth at Amity.

"We will… on the condition you stop hanging out with her and start associating with the right kind of witches, like us for example." Amity wore a sickening smirk as she said this.
"Okay, just let Luz go and I'll do as you say." Mason said, defeated.

"I knew you'd see it our way. Skara. Amelia. release the human. Boscha, give the freak his stuff back." Amity commanded, snapping her fingers. "Come along Mason."

Amity's trio released Mason's friends and did as she said.

Immediately the pink skinned girl cuddled up to Mason and whipped out her scroll phone. "Smile cutie, this is going on my Penstagram."

Mason did no such thing and winced when Boscha snapped their picture.

"Aw, you didn't smile. I guess I'm gonna have to use a nicer filter." she began typing things on the scroll talking to herself. "At the coven convention with the Emperor's Coven ward and he is so cute! Hashtag cutie pie, hashtag my new man, hashtag grumpy face." she let out shrill cry of joy.

"Geez Boscha, you work fast," Amity Jabbed.

"Yeah, what can I say I know quality when I see it and you know how much I love quality."

"I'm not your boyfriend." Mason grumbled.

"Don't be a grump Macey. I mean you could do worse for a girlfriend. I'm head of the Grudgby team you know and I can be very loyal. Oooh, i can't wait to give you a make over."

"What's wrong with how I look?"

"Besides the whole sad human thing you got going...everything," Boscha began and examining Mason, "We need to get you a nice suit. You know something that really shows off how powerful you are. It's also got to be tight so that it shows off that muscular body of yours, and oh, how would you feel about wearing face paint with my initials during games. You could be my cheer captain during Grudgby season." Boscha began a tirade about all the fun things they could do.

"Hey! Amity!" Luz called.

"Oh, look Mason. It's your pet coming to get another kick for being rude."

"You can pick on me but no one threatens my friends."

"Yeah and you can't just take Mason," King added, glaring at the witches.

"Wow, thanks King. I guess you really do care."

"Of course I care, you are one of my favorite servants and no one steals a servant from the King of Demons."

"Thanks King. Good to know how much I matter to you," Mason replied, sarcastically.

"Yeah, and what are you gonna do about it?" Boscha asked, hugging Mason's arm.

"I challenge you to a witches duel!" Luz cried toward Amity.

"Luz, No!" Mason tried to pull away from Boscha but she had a tight grip.

"You challenge me to a witches duel?" Amity laughter was followed by her friends.

"Amity please, she didn't mean it. I'll leave her alone and never hang out with her again, just please don't accept." Mason knew what witches like Amity were capable of and more importantly what Luz wasn't.

"And let her call me a coward. I'm a Blight and Blights don't let anyone challenge their pride." Amity turned to Mason and smiled "I accept and when I win you'll admit that you will never be a witch and you stop practicing magic." She stuck out her hand.

"When I win you and you're friends leave Mason alone." Luz Shook Amity's hand and she used a spell circle to seal the agreement.

"See you in an hour at the center arena. Human." Amity walked away from Luz and put her hand on Mason's shoulder "I'll give you a chance to say goodbye, you can hang out with her until I win the duel."

Boscha looked worried at Mason and then back at Amity, "What! Amity I was going to take him to the Bakers Coven so we could feed cupcakes to each other."

"Boscha get a hold of yourself. When I win the duel you'll have plenty of time for your dates."

Boscha crossed her arms and pouted "Fine." she huffed. She began to walk away but not before kissing Mason on the cheek. "See you soon handsome."

Mason clenched his fists in anger when he watched the snooty group make their exit. He glared at Luz flashing his teeth "Why would you agree to that!? I was handling it!"

"Mason you shouldn't have to hang out with someone because they bully you." Luz said smiling at her friend.

How can she smile after all that. He thought it's my fault they were picking on her. "Luz, stay here. I'm gonna try and talk Amity into calling off the duel."

"But, Mason? Don't you believe in me?"

Mason's eyes softened "I think the world of you Luz. But, Amity she is from the Blight family. They are the best of the best in the magic world second only to the Emperor and his Coven. If you get in the ring with Amity… she will kill you and I won't have that." Mason began to tear up choking on his words as he said, "Please Luz, I can't handle being responsible for another loved one's death."

Luz cupped Mason's face and kissed his cheek "You're not gonna lose me. You know why? Because I've got the best teacher in the Boiling Isles to help me prepare me for this witches duel."

"You're right we should get Eda."

"No Mason I meant you."

"Oh ooh, I'm flattered Luz. Now let me think." Mason tapped his head with his forefinger and an idea began forming. "I have it! Warging."

"What's that? It sounds painful" Luz back stepped a bit.

"No no. It's where I connect our bodies and share abilities. It's dangerous but worth a try."

"I don't know isn't it kinda cheating?"

"Look Luz. Amity started this by not playing fair. We're just leveling the playing field." Mason held out his hand "You with me partner?"

Luz took her friends and drew him in for a hug. "Always."

"Human squad?" Mason asked.

"Human squad!" Luz exclaimed.

The duo fist bumped and made their way to a backroom of the convention center and Mason laid Luz on the table.

"Now Luz, just relax." Mason began doing the circles to connect his and Luz's bodies. He did precise motions and had to make sure it was just the bodies abilities that were shared and not anything else. Can't risk her finding out too many of my secrets.

The power coursed through Luz's body and she felt all the magical abilities come to her. "Wow, this is power. But how do I use it."

"I implanted some of my instincts into yours so you should be fine. Just do what feels right."

"Cool. When do I get to do that spell slicer thingie?"

"Spell Razor." he enunciated his words in annoyance. "You can do it now but I would wait it takes a lot of concentration and finesse to do properly. I would save it as a last resource considering I haven't quite figured out how to make a non lethal option."

"Oh, Okay. I'll keep that in mind." Luz said doing a bit of stretching.

"Alright let's do a little bit of practice in order to get you ready for the fight of your life." Mason said preparing to use whats left of the hour to make Luz Combat ready.

––––––––––––––––

Mason made his way to the booths overlooking the witches duel. Word spread quick of the feud between Luz and Amity. Mason was groggy. One of the drawbacks of warging with someone is their thoughts are your thoughts and their pain is your pain.

Mason could feel Luz's anxiety, he knew she was scared. Mason exercised a little control over Luz to calm her.

Luz looked up at her friend in the stands and waved merrily.

At least she is happy. Mason thought before he heard his name being called. He looked up to see Amity's cronies cheering her on and Boscha calling him to sit next to her. Mason shook his head which caused Boscha to blow him a kiss and do the 'call me' sign.

The flare shot up indicating the duel has started and Mason watched with baited breath, "C'mon Luz remember what I taught you and you'll be fine."

The duel started strong with Amity summoning a huge abomination she seemed surprised with the amount of power output she placed in the spell but that didn't stop her from ordering it to attack.

Luz looked up scared but felt a rush of adrenaline and dodged the hands of the giant monster, shocking everyone. She did this three more times dancing around the Abomination wearing her signature grin.

"Amity, you can do this!" her cheer squad shouted, "So what if she's fast? She has to tire eventually."

"Luz! Use the razor on the creature half-power." Mason called and he knew he was heard when Luz looked up and nodded her head.

This split second decision gave the abomination enough time to slap Luz into the wall. It towered over her and raised it's fist.

"Luz!" Mason was about to charge down and throw in the towel but was stopped by a calm effect. Luz is calming me. She is… confident. He thought amazed at her ability go get her kid. Mason sent his stubborn will to fight to aid Luz.

The fist came down and smashed into the wall making a crack all the way up the pillar shocking Amity's Friends.

"Watch it, Blight! You almost hit us!"

But when the abomination removed it's fist. Instead of the squishy mess that everyone expected there was Luz surrounded by a witches barrier.

"What!? You know how to make a witches barrier!? I don't even know how to do a witches barrier!" Amity exclaimed before looking at her abomination, "Break her!"

At her command the giant golem slammed it's fist down and Luz dodged again doing a handstand while tracing a spell circle. When she landed she launched a razor sharp disc from the circle and sliced the abomination into ruins.

The gathered masses fell in a hush and began talking amongst themselves.

"Ladies and gentlemen! Allow me to thank my teacher Mason Fairweathers for teaching me the spell razor and securing me the victory in this witches duel."

she's getting too confident, he thought before looking over at Amity "Luz, Look out!"

Too Late Amity Summoned an abomination twice as big as the last one this one with spiked fists.

"Luz!" Mason called.

The creature slammed it's fist into Luz but she dodged out of the way, landing on a mound of dirt which then exploded, Destroying what was left of Luz's witch barrier.

"What the–" Mason felt a hand on his shoulder. When he looked up he saw Eda.

"Yeah, I guess I took the cheating a little too far." She said.

"You did this!?"

"Yeah, my bad when I heard Luz and that Snooty Brat were doing a witches duel. I knew I had to level the playing field." she looked lovingly at Mason before digging into his arm with her fist. "I guess great minds think alike."

"Luz could die!"

"Yes, but you're warging her. So you can take complete control at anytime. So take control now and win this duel for her."

Mason, don't you believe in me? Her words echoed in his head. "I think the world of you Luz." he said under his breath. Mason wasn't going to try and protect Luz by coddling her. He would let her do this on her own.

Amity was about to step on a mound but was stopped by Luz shouting at her, "What!? Why don't you want me to step here." Amity continued to step on it.

Luz used Magic to propel herself at Amity grabbing her just as the green haired witches foot touched the explosion mound.

A blast of fire shot out like a geyser and Mason knew by the searing pain on his arm that Luz was hit. It did not take long for Mason to rush to his friend. He landed on the cold floor and ran toward Luz. He saw she had a little burn on her arm. "No, no, here let me help you." Mason used a spell circle and the wound on Luz's arm was all better. Thank god that I started practicing more on my healing magic.

Amity groaned and picked herself back up. She looked at Luz and then the explosion mound, "You cheated! Outside spells are illegal." She shouted before realizing, "That means I won! Yes! Yes I knew I was better." She jumped for joy before looking at Mason. "Say your goodbyes Mason we're going for victory sundaes."

"Wait a minute." Mason stormed toward Amity, turned her around, and found what he was looking for. "ah-ha a Construction Coven power rune." He snatched the sticker from her neck.

Amity looked shocked and was red faced. "I-i. how did that get on my? You planted it there!"

"No i didn't." Mason looked up into the rafters and say Lilith looking down smirking before she faded into the shadows. "But I have an idea who did."

Amity ran away and Luz chased after her.

Mason stomped the ground and shouted to the sky "Lilith! I'm going to rip you limb from limb for what you did today!" he ran out of the arena and saw Luz showing Amity her light ball.

When Mason walked up to them Amity was already getting ready to leave.

When Amity saw the young mage. She looked down disheartened, "I'm sorry for forcing you to Hang out with me."

Before Mason could say anything she left him shocked. "I forgive you." he said under his breath.

Mason walked up to Luz. "What'd you say to the wicked witch of the west to get her to apologize."

"I just gave her a heart to heart and I think she took it well." Luz said with smile "She even nullified the contract and said that she hopes I do well with my studies."

"That's great!" Mason exclaimed before looking at Luz with a sly smile. "How'd it feel to be casting real spells?"

"It was awesome but I think I need to lie down it's been exhausting."

"Hey Luz?"

The human girl looked at Mason and smiled "Yeah?"

"Someday, you're gonna be able to cast spells like you did today. I promise I will make it happen."

Luz wrapped Mason in a hug and kissed his cheek "I know you will. That's what makes you the best brother in the boiling isles."

"Yeah, I'm the best." Mason looked back at the entrance of the Arena and thought of all the things that happened today That's why you're always in danger whenever I get involved. I love you Luz and I won't let anything happen to you.
