There's this kid in my gym class: Frank Zhang. He's 6'3, Asian, military-style cut black hair, brown eyes. He really bulky, and a little pudgy. He looks really tough, but if and when you get to know him, he wouldn't hurt a fly. Unless that fly insulted one of his friends.
My name is Ryan. Ryan Welles and I'm a nerd. Yeah, I know it. I'm 5'3, brown hair, green eyes. I skinny, not on purpose, and I have NO athletic ability, but I don't care. I'm a nerd and proud.
But a few weeks ago, there was a guy in my gym class that thought he could beat FRANK at wrestling.
Let me tell you about it.
LINE BREAK
"Alright, people!" Coach was yelling at us.
"Today I'm going to demonstrate some basic wrestling techniques. Now if some of you don't want to do this, you can run laps around the gym," When he said the last part he looked at me. I could feel my ears turning pink.
"Alright, let's start!"
I started running and dully heard Coach explaining something about grabbing the opponent, but I couldn't hear over my own heavy breathing. I have no idea how wrestling actually works. Then I heard,
"Does anyone want to try?"
2 hands went up.
Frank's and some kid named Chad's. Chad is in for a rude awakening.
You see, Chad is a stereotypical jock/bully: blonde hair, blue eyes, muscles, and a dazzling smile. He thinks he's the greatest thing since BEFORE sliced bread.
So, I was actually delighted to see Frank pummel him.
"Ok, brave ones. Come here." He gestured to the mat.
"You're goin' down, baby face." Chad taunted.
Frank didn't say anything in response, but fire was in his eyes.
"GO!" Coach blew his whistle.
I couldn't see very well because of the crowd, but I finally found an opening.
Chad was pinned under Frank, breathless.
"ONE! TWO! THREE!" Coach blew his whistle.
Frank got off of Chad just lay there, panting and groaning.
"Chad!" Coach yelled, "Walk it off!"
I could tell Coach had had some bad experiences with Chad himself.
"Zhang! Good job!" That was pretty high praise from Coach. "Does anyone else want to try and defeat Zhang?"
For a second, no one raised their hands, most of them stared at a heaving Chad.
"Uh... I will," Everyone jerked their heads to see who was being suicidal.
I saw a boy about 6'0, black hair, sea-green eyes, muscular, and there was a mischievous smirk on his face.
I don't know this kid, so I actually kind of felt bad for him.
"Alright,... Percy?" Coach was reading off of his clipboard.
I looked to see Frank's facial expression. I thought he might be a little worried, instead, he had that same mischievous smirk on his face. For a nerd, I am EXTREMELY confused.
Frank and 'Percy' got onto the mat and when Coach blew his whistle, they started.
I noticed something.
Neither of them seemed like they were trying, they were holding back.
Eventually, Frank pinned Percy, but neither boy seemed to be breathing hard, heck, Percy didn't even seem like he was in pain.
"ONE! TWO! THREE!" Coach blew the whistle, so Frank rolled off of Percy.
Percy didn't seem mad, or annoyed, he just smiled and bro-hugged Frank.
After gym class, I caught up with Frank and asked, "Who was that guy you wrestled?"
"Chad?"
"No, that 'Percy' guy," I put air quotes around Percy.
"Oh, he's my friend," Frank said.
"Is that why you guys didn't go very hard at each other?"
Frank shrugged. "I guess."
How did Frank act like it was no big deal?
"Hey, Frank!" Percy ran up to us- no- ran up to Frank.
"Yeah, wassup?" Frank asked.
"Just wanted to tell you that I'm gonna get you back for this," Somehow, Percy managed to sound joking and serious at the same time. Like, his tone was joking, but you could see his eyes were actually wondering, 'Who's better?'
"Alright! In front of the girls?"
"Hell yeah! Annabeth has to see me beat your ass!" Now they were both being sarcastic/serious.
I didn't know Frank had friends outside of school. I mean, close friends. It was obvious Percy and Frank were pretty tight.
And that's how I learned that Frank can take down anyone, even his friends.
That was a pretty crappy ending, I know.
