This one's flirty and cute. I feel obligated now to forewarn people if I write an angsty chapter because the show deals with some serious themes. I think everyone should be fine with this one, except maybe if you're claustrophobic.

The Break-In

"Crap," Julie muttered under her breath as she flung every item from her backpack onto the floor. Tonight was supposed to be a song-writing night with Luke but she had forgotten her lyric journal with all her ideas at school. She could picture exactly where she had left it in her locker, but she was clinging to the hope that she was wrong and it was at the bottom of her bag.

Just as she threw the last item onto the floor she heard "Woah what's happening here?" from behind her. Startled, she spun around quickly and realized it was Luke, standing in the doorway of her room.

She sighed, frustrated. "I'm sorry, I know we're supposed to work on songs tonight but I'm an idiot and I left my lyric book at school, and it has all the ideas I was going to show you. I guess we'll have to do this another night…"

Luke tilted his head to the side, curious, and said, "Why don't we just go get it?"

"Ummm… it's 9 pm, the school is locked up."

"So? I'm sure there's an open window or something somewhere."

Incredulous, Julie said, "You mean break into the school?"

Luke shrugged. "It's not like you're stealing or doing anything bad, you're just grabbing your own stuff. Come on, I need to get out of the house anyway, I'm here all the time and this sounds like fun."

"Yeah, easy for you to say, nobody can catch you if you break laws," Julie said, rolling her eyes, but she was starting to think harder about the idea. "There is the back door with the lock that doesn't really work. It wouldn't be that hard… And nobody would ever know since we're not doing anything bad."

"Now you're seeing my brilliance!"

She rolled her eyes again, but said, "Fine. But if it looks like we're gonna get caught I'm out of there."

"Yeah of course. I wouldn't suggest anything I thought would be bad for you or get you in trouble."

"Oh yeah, like you didn't suggest sneaking out for the show when my Dad was making me study."

Luke tried to look innocent, which made them both laugh.

"Well, if we're gonna do this, let's get going," Julie said finally.

She tiptoed out the front door, trying not to alert her dad that she was heading out, with Luke close behind her. They walked the short ten minutes to her school, brainstorming song ideas and talking about new ways for the band to branch out with its sound.

When they reached the edge of the parking lot, Julie held a finger up to her lips to indicate they needed to be quiet from then on. She grabbed Luke by the hand to lead him towards the door she thought would be their best option for sneaking inside. She was so focused on not getting caught that she didn't notice Luke blush and squeeze her hand a little tighter.

Luck was with them and the gym door's lock was indeed unlocked. They ran quietly across the gym and opened the door to the hallway. Julie quickly glanced both ways and then slipped out to head towards her locker. Luke was starting to feel more comfortable, so he whispered, "It's kind of spooky here without all the kids. Like a movie set or something."

"Yeah, it feels totally different," Julie whispered back. She edged a little closer to Luke as they walked down the hallway because it was kind of spooky.

They made it to her locker without incident and both of them were getting a little cocky about how easy this had been. She opened her locker and grabbed the journal, which was right where she had left it.

"You know, if this were a movie set it would totally be perfect for a dance number," Luke whispered mischievously. Before Julie had time to respond, Luke grabbed her hand and spun her in the hallway, then pulled her in to start dancing with her in a totally goofy, exaggerated way. She tried to stifle her laugh and not be too loud, but she was grinning at Luke's antics. When he pulled her close, she felt the usual sparks from her enormous crush on him. He seemed to feel the same thing because his dance moves slowed and he started dancing more seriously with her, one hand holding hers and the other around her waist. Julie was thankful that her dance classes made her feel less like an idiot.

"I didn't know you could dance like this," Julie whispered softly while gazing up at him.

Luke was about to answer when they heard a faint whistling and a rattling noise. Luke looked alarmed, and asked "Ghost?"

"Janitor!" Julie whispered back fiercely. She grabbed his hand and pulled him along the hallway to the music room. The instrument closet was open so she pushed Luke in there and quickly followed him in, closing the door behind them.

"There's no reason the janitor should need to come into this closet," she whispered, ear against the door. When she was satisfied the janitor had gone by, she breathed a little easier, but then realized how close she and Luke were. The closet wasn't large at the best of times, but all the new marching band uniforms were shoved in there along with the school's spare instruments, so there was barely room for the two of them to stand together.

Luke looked down at her, grinning and clearly not minding her proximity.

"Well, we're gonna be here for a bit. I think the janitor won't be done with his rounds for another hour if I had to guess, so we'll have to wait it out," she sighed. She sat down on the floor, tucking her knees up to her chest in order to take up as little room as possible. Luke followed suit but the closet was so small their legs were pressed up against each other.

Julie's head was still spinning a little from their dance, and the adrenaline was pumping through her, so she wasn't thinking a hundred percent clearly. She noticed Luke's hair was totally out of place from the mad scramble to get into the closet so, without thinking, she reached over and fixed it for him. That action brought their faces only a couple inches from each other, though, and she heard Luke's sharp intake of breath. Her hand froze and she looked at him, her hand still in his hair. His eyes flickered down to her lips and then back up to her eyes.

But after a moment, Julie unfroze and sat back. She realized she still had her journal in her hand, so she tried to break the tension by talking about some of her lyric ideas. This seemed to make Luke snap out of his trance, and they spent the next hour whispering about her lyric ideas.

Finally, she checked her phone and realized it should be late enough that the janitor would be gone. She cracked open the instrument closet door and checked to make sure the coast was clear. Then she took Luke's hand again, and led him back through the maze of hallways, staying silent the whole time.

When they slipped out the gym door again and felt the fresh night air on their faces, they breathed a sigh of relief. Julie wasn't ready to rest easy yet, so she pulled Luke into a run and they made it all the way home before she slowed down.

Standing on the sidewalk of the street behind her house, she suddenly felt giddy. "We did it!" she whispered excitedly and then threw her arms around Luke in a huge hug, laughing a little wildly. He immediately picked her up and spun her around with a huge smile on his face. They were both laughing and breathing hard when he put her down, but his hands didn't leave her waist and hers didn't leave his neck.

Because of the adrenaline coursing through his system and all of the sexual tension that had built up between them over the night, Luke impulsively leaned down and kissed her, hard. She was only momentarily surprised before she pulled him in closer and deepened the kiss. The sparks flying between them made the kiss exciting and filled with joy, just the way Julie had always imagined Luke would kiss her. They stumbled backwards until he was leaning against her back fence and she was standing between his legs. Together they lost track of time, just enjoying the rush of their adventure and being so close.

Finally, she pulled away, afraid that if she stayed any longer her dad would notice her gone and punish her. They whispered goodnight to each other, but Julie pulled Luke down for one last quick kiss before she hurried inside. She clutched her journal to her chest, now even more attached to it because of all the new excitement it had brought her.
